It looks like the sort of thing that would fit more into some sort of cheap Hanna-Barbara/Filmation show from the late 70's/early 80's. They look like aliens from ewwwwwwww. In Japan Robotech is only publicly known as an event where students build robots that have to go through some kind of obstacle course. I think they have the Japanese copyright on the name. I know we've been over this in this thread a few times, but I guess once more wouldn't hurt... I've talked to Palladium and gotten a fairly reasonable explanation for exactly why there's so much completely ridiculous and wildly inaccurate stuff in the licensed Robotech and Macross II Palladium RPGs. It's not that they didn't TRY, it's mainly a lack of support from the owner of the licensed property in the case of RT, and a case of inadequate source availability in the case of the Macross II game. HG basically fobbed them off with a highly inadequate packet of information and left them to pay out-of-pocket to have official Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada artbooks translated, and go frame by frame through the footage looking for clues. In the case of Macross II, they had almost no artbooks to work from, so they had to go almost exclusively on the animation. I'd guess since there was no animation for the Sentinels series beyond the "movie" made from what little footage they had, it was likely entirely down to whatever they could scrounge from Harmony Gold's notes. Who is/was Long, cause his stuff is pretty crap. It looks like the sort of thing that would fit more into some sort of cheap Hanna-Barbara/Filmation show from the late 70's/early 80's. I liked it because not only because it is transformable but also not a brick. You can move its legs and arms. Which shows how innovative Shoji Kawamori is in designing. Plus it was an analog for the F-14 Tomcat. I like the Tomcat. Then came the early 90's with Robotech was syndicated in a local station. I was like... Why are they calling Macross Robotech? It was obvious to me when I saw the two other parts of it that it was a patch up work much like Voltron. The patch up work was terrible. Well HG has the international distribution rights to distribute Macross outside of Japanese territories and China has not been a territority of Japan since WWII... Generational but that depends on how net savvy and a geek you are. If you are a real geek you'll recognize Macross more. Here's an anecdote. I was at my college's common lounge. It is not uncommon to see someone play anime or toku on their laptop. I was doing my own thing chilling. Someone was playing Macross Frontier episode sub on his laptop. Let's not split hairs here hulagu, for all practical purposes the "original" Robotech series is little more than a legitimized bootleg with a really bad Hong Kong translation, and every sequel attempt with the possible exception of the Robotech 3000 series has had all the artistic integrity of Space Gundam V, relying almost exclusively on stuff from shows they don't own (esp. Macross), altered JUST enough to avoid a copyright infringement lawsuit. I was like I wanted to be a straight man in a manzai comedy. The thing going through my head was... "Chigau! Zen Zen Chigau! Robotech ja nai!" Oddly, I had that exact same situation in reverse when a Japanese friend of mine in grad school saw someone with a bad Shadow Chronicles desktop background and thought it was Mospeada. I remember my cousin talk about watching Voltes V on TV there when I was younger. But it's a mish mash; when I first visited the Philippines in the 80s, I got to see Voltron being shown in English. When I went there again in 2002, they had a block of anime on one network being showed subbed, but they weren't new shows. They were promoting Samurai X (Rurouni Kenshin), Cooking Master Boy, and Eden's Bowy. Meanwhile, I was able to buy dubbed anime on VCD from a legitimate video store. At least I hope it was legitimate, because it looked like a Walden Books from the inside, but the quality of the VCDs were mediocre and they only had two episodes each. Unfortunately most of the toy stores today cater more on the Gundam gunpla fans. You can get Macross toys at special hobby shops in an architectural maze known as Greenhills. Does the poorly done Robotech hackjob lack any artistic merit beyond that of nolstagia for those watched it in the original run? Yes. Did HG actually have the legal right to do this poo? Unfortunately, yes. In light of this, and the RL shennigans that have gone down since, does BW have a right to never again let HG 100 feet 0f its IP? Hell yes. Mostly, I'm sore about the FASA (and now Catalyst)/HG issues about throwing accusations of "bootleg" around. Oddly, I had that exact same situation in reverse when a Japanese friend of mine in grad school saw someone with a bad Shadow Chronicles desktop background and thought it was Mospeada. I think HG would have been better off making a straight Mospeada II spinoff or Mospeada the Movie rather than try to tie it into the ridiculous continuity of the Sentinels timeline.
