  1. There's enough interest from some in this site on the ongoing Monogatari series for it to have it's own thread and thereby keep it from monopolizing other threads. Let's keep it all here, TV series, films, novels and those fine looking 1/8 Senjougahara PVC figures too.
  2. While this announcement may be equal parts tech news and gaming news, the widely used Steam gaming distribution service by Valve Software is now going to have it's own operating system too. SteamOS was announced today and while it looks like it's aimed at consoles (and the Steam Box itself) it appears any PC can run the SteamOS. This is huge! http://www.giantbomb.com/articles/valve-has-its-own-operating-system-now-in-steamos/1100-4746/ Streaming games from your other devices...wow! My mind is officially blown!
  3. A few weeks ago Steam had a sale from which I purchased this game called Dust: An Elysian Tail for about $7 (regular $15). The game had some of the best reviews of last year. With the exception of Fez it had been over a decade since the last time a 2D platform game with brightly-colored anthropomorphic characters caught my attention in any positive way. Having just finished Dust, I have to say I am sure glad I took a chance to buy this on sale because this game is incredible. I sunk almost 30 hours into the game and can't recommend it enough. I'd purchase this game for $20 and have no regrets. The game play is very metroidvania, using that familiar style of map progression for each location you explore and featuring light RPG elements that enable the player to build the character of Dust and collect treasure and items to enhance Dust's abilities. You have a flying companion named Fidget who has some basic magical abilities which Dust can then interact with using his enchanted sword to create storms of magical attacks. The combat is fun, varied and extremely addictive. The game uses a combo system in which Dust can combine various types of maneuvers into strings of spinning, jumping and whirling destruction. When combined with Fidgets magic attacks, Dust can achieve impressive visual onslaughts that light up the screen. Thanks to a very simple and elegant control scheme, the combo system is very easy to learn and reliably perform from one battle to the next. As you progress, Dust will gain new abilities and while most are familiar staples of platform games (the double jump, the slide, etc) they are all implemented exceptionally well. Developer Humble Hearts knows how important game control is and has built the game in such a way that playing the character of Dust is like a dream; smooth, responsive and reliable. Graphically Dust looks, plays and feels like a 2D Platform Game given the Triple-A developer treatment despite it's indie origins. Dust enjoys similar benefit of modern technology applied to a 2D engine in the vein of Mark of the Ninja. Every screen is dense, filled with animation, detail and a deep illusion of dimension. Dust goes straight for high definition in all the character, level and effects design. This is a game in high resolution with gorgeous animation and effects of a level that we all desperately wanted 15 years ago playing our Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. The player character, the NPCs and enemies all look fluidly animated and the levels and effects are given just as much attention. Locations with snow, rain, wind, fire, lava and other visually striking effects are fully realized in stunning detail, each of which have an effect on game play. Dust is also fully scalable and some sequences in the game have the frame pulled far back to display your tiny player appearing in front of beautiful, immense vistas or enormous statues in the background all displayed in sharp, high-resolution graphics. I give "Dust: An Elysian Tail" 5 out of 5. Immersive, funny, silly, gorgeous, exciting, challenging and non-stop fun: Dust: An Elysian Tail pretty much has it all. If you're interested in taking a break from all the dark, gritty and realistic modern shooters and RPGs to enjoy some lighter, addictive retro-re-imagined fun then Dust is just the game for you. Available on PC via Steam and X-Box 360 via X-Box Live.
  4. So, any Ace Combat fans in here? I'm kinda torn on what I think of Ace Combat Legacy...I mean, I have enough hope to make a fantrailer for it, but, still...Strangereal meats RL? I dunno. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5TWl1nQtYo&feature=youtu.be <- Just in case anyone is interested in the trailer I made for it.
  5. How many people here were fans of Bullfrog's Syndicate or Syndicate Wars? For me, it was one of the first games I ever played on the Amiga 500 that just sucked me into a world of cyberpunk and espionage - loved the atmosphere, music and feel of the game. So - long story short, my friends have put together a Kickstarter (went live yesterday) to fund the spiritual successor to Syndicate and Syndicate Wars - they're all going to be made redundant by August (game dev studio closing down, I worked with them at a previous game dev - when that also closed down several years ago), and they've even got one of the original creators on the team as well as the original sound designer and composer of they reach a certain goal - check out the link below and see what you think - hey even pledge a bit of change if u wanna see it become a reality! Even if they weren't my buddies - I'd still get this game :3 http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/5livesstudios/satellite-reign
  6. http://www.bhvr.com/eternalcrusade/# http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/11/e3-2013-behaviour-announces-warhammer-40k-eternal-crusade/ I'm ready to buy a collectors edition, rush to max, have the community fall apart because of lacking end game, and sell my character in the space of 4 months! Who is with me!!!
  7. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, a standalone game chock full of 80's awesomeness. Starring Michael Biehn as "Sergeant Rex Power Colt" TAKE MY 15 BUCKS NOW! (Comes out April 29th for PS3, May 1st for PC and 360) Reveal Trailer First 15 minutes by IGN (SPOILERS! But totally awesome!)
  8. Anyone else checked out the big press announcement for the Playstation 4? There's actually a lot of good information in the announcement. Here's a breakdown of what was covered in the 2 hour presentation: http://www.giantbomb.com/articles/the-playstation-4-exists/1100-4583/ The big rumor going around now seems to be that "The Last Guardian" (the next game from the creators of "Ico" and "Shadow of the Colossus") is being delayed so it can be released on the PS4 instead of the PS3. Thoughts? Praise? Complaints?
  9. Haven't seen a topic about this one yet, but it looks like Bungie is beginning the advance marketing for its new game titled Destiny. The game is a FPS, but looks like a lot more with a much broader, more interactive game environment and social network considerations. A new look at the game has been released: http://www.giantbomb.com/videos/bungie-talks-about-destiny/2300-7056/ This looks like a great new project. It feels like a lot of the creativity from this studio is once again at the forefront for Destiny. They may just have more to them than Halo, which would be a nice surprise. Anyone else interested?
  10. Does anyone else remembering having their hopes and dreams shattered by the shambling mess of a movie that was GUNHED? Well, There was a limited exhibition for the movie held in Akihabara last weekend. Unlike most exhibits in Japan, photos were allowed at this one, so I went all out. Of course, one of the best pieces of art in the exhibit was by Hidetaka Tenjin Hope these don't bring back too many bad memories
  11. They're being coy, but there is little doubt What's that behind the "title"? Enhancement shows the way...
  12. Is anyone playing Halo 4? I've only played the first two campaign missions and so far I like what I see. The play control is smooth and you can tell 343 wanted this to be a faster paced game. The music also reflects this by urging you to jump in and shoot everything CQB style as opposed to playing the range game and picking off enemies from a far. As with every other installment of the series it's quite a feast for the eyes. All the exterior areas have a grand scale to them always alluding to what's beyond the horizon. Interior areas have vaulted ceilings that make you wonder what else is up there and everything is saturated with Forerunner technology. The new weapons are definitely interesting. I like that you can used either the Battle Rifle or the DMR. You can even customize your loadouts in Spartan Ops to carry two primary weapons if you wanted. The Forerunner weapons great to watch form in your hand once you pick them up and they expand and contract when you reload so that you can insert the new magazine. Spartan Ops I've had some good co-op fun with so far. You can fully customize your Spartan like you could in Reach but the character models are far superior this time. You can unlock and assign equipment packages in a Call of Duty type system. These equipment packages range from unlimited sprint to carrying two primary weapons. I personally won't be actively playing the multiplayer. I love my co-op gameplay to keep things fun while multiplayer tends to just piss me off. All in all, I really like it so far and look forward to some Legendary runs with my friends. Also feel free to send me a friend request if you have a gold account. Always looking forward to playing games with my fellow Macross fans.
  13. I could have sworn there was a topic for this game, but it appears this will be the first thread for X-COM: Enemy Unknown. For me, this video game kinda came out of nowhere; in development for 4 years, I wasn't even aware it existed until 2012. Since the early part of this year I've been following this game and each new video looks better and better. Details are as follows: A reimagining of the original 1994 PC Game UFO- Enemy Unknown (aka, X-COM: UFO Defense in North America) Turn-based squad game Made by Firaxis (makers of Civilization) Release date is October 9, 2012 Available for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 Premiere video game website Giant Bomb just released a "Quick Look" at the new game and it's everything an X-COM fan could hope for. I just finished watching this almost hour-long video and I wanted to share the love. http://www.giantbomb...nknown/17-6601/ Pre-orders are available now from most of the major game distributors, including digital via Steam. Check it out!

    Macross 30

New game project coming in 2013. Macross 30. Name is tentative. No details on game type or platform. Apparently Minmay is in it and the other characters 'meet' her somehow. All dialogue has already been recorded. UPDATE: ANN has the games tentative logo graphic: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2012-09-21/namco-bandai-games-to-release-macross-30-in-2013
  15. The next installment to the franchise. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5IVOs5Pxh8&feature=plcp
  16. Figured I'd relaunch our videogame discussion topic with the news that I've finally platinum'd Gundam Extreme Vs. Is anyone else still playing? There's some epic hilarity to be had playing through ranked online. Also, I'm not sure how much longer it'll be up (may expire at midnight), but Motorstorm RC for the Vita is/was a free full game download today.
  17. FYI, I'm not the mod who decided to do some thread-cleaning an hour before the game is released... Anyways, just finished my ME 2 paragon run and a few last achievements tonight. Never did do an insanity run. (started, but honestly didn't think it was worth it---I still prefer ME1's battle system, and was MUCH better at it---insanity on ME1 was fine--tough, but not truly frustrating) PS---it seems Blood Dragon armor will carry over if you've got it. WITH the new removable-helmet option. So yes, Bioware did listen. It just took a while.
  18. Looks pretty damn cool IMO. Didn't think the colony would still be there though....unless it was farther from the atmosphere processing plant than originally thought. Still gonna pick this up. Trailer looks fantastic. http://ingame.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/09/01/7544289-decades-later-aliens-gets-a-sequel-you-can-play Chris
  19. Out of the ashes of the now-bankrupt Midway Games comes a new hope for all Mortal Kombat fans. Developed by NetherRealm Studios (formerly Midway) under the supervision of the game's co-creator Ed Boon, the new MK returns to its 2D fighting roots, dropping the 3D sidestepping of the past games. Players who love doing combo chains will love two of the game's new features: Tag Team and X-Ray. Tag Team appears to be more or less like the Marvel vs. Capcom series. X-Ray mode enables players to see exactly how much damage they do to their opponents with combos that inflict over 40% damage. Already confirmed to appear in the game as playable characters are Raiden, Johnny Cage, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kung Lao, Mileena, Nightwolf, Reptile, Sektor and Shang Tsung. Shao Kahn appears in the the trailer, but it is unknown if he is a playable character. Boon says he's aiming to have a total of 26 playable characters in the roster. Mortal Kombat is set for release in Spring 2011 for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
  20. It's nice to have an "All things video games" thread, but recently it seems to be about "video game news" than anything else, so I propose starting a discussion on the stuff we all grew up with and get nostalgic pangs for every so often now. I'll start by explaining that I had hardly played any video games for probably over a decade until I bought a PSP when Macross Ace Frontier came out. MAF was fun and everything, but it was the old school emulators that got me hooked again. Back in the day I had a Super NES and Gameboy, and I believed they were the greatest things on the planet. Going to school in the UK I bought CVG (Computer & Video Games) magazine every month (with awesome airbrushed artwork on the cover every issue), and later switched to the new NMS (Nintendo Magazine System -- yeah, what a name). The free gifts were incredible at the time. A "Time Boy" clock/keyring in the shape of a gameboy, the entire Street Fighter 2 arcade soundtrack on CD (with all the speech and everything)... Anyway, needless to say most of my favourite games were on Nintendo machines. Here are some which I enjoy even to this day. Axelay: There was a wholesale store called Makro which always had an excellent selection of hardcore shooters like this. I distinctly remember Cybernator and Super Aleste being on the same shelf, but I went and got this one. It was the European mainland edition because it came with two instruction booklets, one in English and one in Portuguese. Holy crap were these graphics gobsmackingly-insane. It moved like 3D, but it was all cool sprite-scaling and Mode 7 wizardry. And the music was amazing. It was around this time that I realized that the Konami logo was really just a seal of quality, and a guarantee of fun. Starfox/Starwing All the UK mags made a big deal about this one not least for the fact that it was the first real, full speed 3D shooter on a console (unless you count Faceball 2000?) but also for the involvement of British developer Argonaut Software. That meant lots of interviews with the staff. Ironically due to copyright reasons the name had to be changed since there already was some Starfox game on the Spectrum or C64 or some Amstrad thing, who knows. The game itself was incredibly fun, and I remember playing it with my friends on my 12th birthday party. "BOGEY ON MY SIX!" Yoshi's Island: As this one was released really late in the life of the console, I don't really have as "nostalgic" feelings for it as the others, yet have plenty of memories trying to solve all the puzzles and whatnot. The control system was like no other game before it and extremely daunting at first, as the whole structure of the game was based on the concept of getting Yoshi to aim and throw his eggs at enemies, obstacles, power-ups; and the whole thing gets even more complex when you incorporate the calculations you have to make to get the eggs to rebound at the perfect angle to hit the switch that activates the thing to transform Yoshi into a car (with comedy vertically-extending axles) or helicopter and whatnot. Yeah, weird but really fun. And I never managed to unlock all the levels, as there are still some flowers and coins and stuff that I never found. Street Fighter 2: The big one. My cousin and I played the hell out of this game. "SHORYUUKEN!!" Mario Paint: OK, so, not really a game. But it was certainly something I spent a lot of time on, since I loved drawing and making animations. The sound composer was great too, and the fly-squatting game was the most fun I've ever had with a mouse-click type of game. Simple but sweet. Super Game Boy: Again, not a game. BUT.... since I had LOADS of Gameboy games, I thought it was a godsend. To be able to play GB games on TV, in colour?? Also, being able to mess with the screen borders and stuff as player 2 when your mate is trying to concentrate on staying alive is really fun. You can even graffiti over the screen, blocking his view if you're feeling douchey-like. Donkey Kong GB: I bought this at the same time as the Super GB, I think on the day of release. I remember they both came out at the same time. This is not the Gameboy version of Donkey Kong Country, which came out later, this is the "extended" version of the classic DK game. 100 levels of puzzle-solving, barrel-jumping, switch-flicking, deep-sea diving, monkey-tail-climbing, key-finding, trash-can-throwing, back-flipping, power-line-swinging action! Looking back now it seems really easy, but back in the day I remember being stuck on figuring out some of the more complex levels. The perfect portable game. Zelda: Link's Awakening: A great adventure. I don't know what else to say. I also got the other GB Zelda games that Capcom developed, and they were good, too, but they seemed much more systematic than the organic, natural feel of the flow of the original's story. I don't know why I never got the SNES one. Those were some of the ones which I remember the most. I often play retro games now, too, in particular shooting games. It's just a simple form of grammar that I can pick up and enjoy for a few minutes when I have free time, and that's what gaming is to me -- I'm not into hardcore RPGs for that reason. I'll write about those games too at a later date: Gunhed, Soldier Blade, Aleste, Zanac, etc. Oh, and I forgot SCRAMBLED VALKYRIE, hehe.
  21. I'm highly surprised there's no STO thread on here (forgive me if there is, I did a search and didn't find anything). This game rocks! I'm in the open beta and I have to say I'm very pleased. http://www.startrekonline.com/ There's a lot of extremely nerdy fanbois (mostly fans of the flowery "let's make friends with everyone" TNG era) who are saying it's "not real Star Trek" because there's "very little diplomacy" which isn't really true but oh well. The game has a strong TOS/TMP/DS9/VOY feel to it which I enjoy quite a bit. The basics of the plot are that it's 2409, Romulus has been destroyed, the Federation is still picking up the pieces, and the Undine (Species 8472) have been using their shape-shifting powers to create havoc in the Federation, culminating in the dissolution of the peace treaties between the Klingon Empire (now including the Gorn bent on galactic takeover, the Orions and the Nausicaans) and the Federation resulting in a very TMP like state where the two superpowers are "almost at war" and generally very hostile to each other. The Romulans are building their military and trying to reconstruct their Empire so they can join in on the fun, and then you have the Cardassians just waiting for a chance on the other side of the wormhole, and finally the Borg always present to just cause trouble. The Federation and the Klingons are currently playable, with the Romulans definitely being added later and more options being explored. All in all it's pretty good. This is my current ship, the U.S.S. Crozier, NCC-91848, a Constitution II-class Cruiser obviously. I don't have any shots of my Miranda-class Light Cruiser (the starter ship) named the U.S.S. Arkhangelesk unfortunately, but I assume most people know what the Miranda-class looks like. The game has a really cool ship customization system. Vostok 7
  22. OK, c'mon. Everybody has a guilty pleasure. Something that you enjoy but you know that if others knew about this pleasure you could very easily be mocked. It might be a TV show, film, a song, a musical artist, a certain type of toy, Emma Watson, whatever. Time fo 'fess up. MY guilty pleasure at the moment is La Roux (which I have previously admitted to, I know.) Strange music with backing instrumentation that sounds like it is coming out of a C64, but I think its great stuff anyway. So c'mon. What do you like that you shouldn't. ONE rule - No mocking or nastiness here. This is just a place to clear one's conscience. Taksraven
  23. KOJIMA PROJEXT "NEXT" Joystiq.com: Kojima website updates with countdown and mysterious "5" 1up.com: Kojima Productions Teaser Site: Is That A "5"? IGN.com: MGS5 Announcement Coming This Week? The webpage source code reveals only these clues: "Hideo Kojima, MGS,METAL GEAR, NEXT, game, konami, kojima game, KJP, Kojima Production" Thunder and lightning? Is it Raiden? Is it all just a ruse? Might this end up being an entirely different IP? Stay tuned!
  24. Since the 30th anniversary of Alien is this year, new video games are being developed and Dark Horse is coming out with new comics, I thought a thread like this would be appropriate. Did anybody check out the Free Comic Book Day Aliens/Predator preview issue? New Aliens and Predator comics; it's like I'm six all over again.
