  1. I actually wonder about that. I really hope they've made significant changes since we last saw it, but next year would pretty much be the ideal time to do it, since it's the 30th anniversary of Macross Plus premiering. They may stretch it out though, since it didn't end until a year later, with the movie version coming out in August of 1995.
  2. I could see how a lot of these issues could get thrown in the QC category from being sub-par parts that got pushed through, but the overwhelming amount of flaws makes me think the majority of the production run was below spec, and they decided to shove through anything that was minimally viable. Some of the stuff I've seen makes me think the manufacturing of the parts themselves has got some nasty slop in it. I don't know how the whole assembly and molding process works, but how on earth do you get parts with cockeyed pinholes drilled into them? I can't imagine that kind of thing is done by hand, and if it's automated, the tooling to drill the hole must have gotten sloppy somehow.

Honestly, I always thought integrating the neck cover into the arm shield felt kinda dumb, since it only works for fighter and battroid, and you still need the spare neck cover for gerwalk anyhow, so you're not really changing anything. However.. It does work if you just ignore gerwalk, and only go between fighter and battroid. Given how gerwalk is generally looked over on the YF-19 anyhow, it does make some sense. In my case, I decided to do the opposite, and removed the sliding neck cover from the shield, so I only ever use the separate neck cover in gerwalk and fighter mode, for one specific reason: by disconnecting them, the shield isn't pulled against the head so tightly, and I can angle the arms further downward in fighter mode, and actually get the gunpod to point straight forward.
  4. I'm curious about the leg hardpoint missiles, since I don't think those were ever packaged separately in the first place. I'm pretty sure they were displayed alongside all of the other missiles to mimic the weapons display artwork, but it would really surprise me if they actually removed them from this release.
  5. So this isn't quite related directly to the topic, but I just saw that HLJ has shows there FINALLY being a reissue of the 1/72 White Glint kit, sometime early next year. I don't think it's so much that the WWM releases are making people rest easy in this case, I think it's more that the majority of people here who wanted this YF-19 already got either the VF-19 Advance, or the original release of the full set. I'm glad it exists for people who missed out, but this is a far less desirable release. The only thing really helping it is the exchange rate, which in spite of the lack of included accessories, actually does drop this one's price quite a bit lower compared to what the other two went for at the time. As for HLJ.. yeah, their search system is garbage, and their front page is less than useless. However their new release listings get leaked has destroyed their utility on pre-order night.

  8. This is the part that doesn't make any sense though, and I would love to understand. How do they manage to screw them all up in exactly the same way, when Yamato pretty much nailed it as far back as the 1/48 release? The leg/arm/backpack interaction is something that they seem to flub every single time, in the exact same ways.
  9. Oh, I know very well it's not that easy. What I mean is that Bandai is also very aware of that, and they demonstrate it frequently on most of the figures and products they manufacture. The thing is, it feels bizarre that they can't manage to make any VF-1 line up consistently as well as Yamato did over a decade ago, and the mistakes they keep making are consistent across all versions that I'm aware of, including the 1/72 model kit. They cannot seem to get the legs and arms to line up with the backpack in a position that's not stressing some connection, and they cannot seem to comprehend that press-fit pegs are completely insufficient to hold legs and arms in place correctly. It's like they have fixated on an incompetent solution, and refuse to improve on it. The VF-25 is just another case where they made really questionable design choices that seem to completely wreck the stability and presentation of the toy.
  10. Try as they might (and it might be assuming too much to say they actually are trying ) Bandai really cannot seem to work out how those packs are supposed to attach, and keep everything in line. It's actually sort of bizarre to think about.. if the things are made in CAD, isn't that all supposed to be worked out ahead of time? And yet, they can't figure out how to make the VF-25 line up, they can't nail the tolerances on the VF-31s, and they seem somehow incapable of making a VF-1 that lines up and locks together as well as a Yamato design from 15 years ago (and this applies to both the HMR and DX). It feels like they're just missing some material tolerancing fundamental here, and designing things to be the wrong size. They just don't fit. I realize I'm being pretty darn picky here, but it bugs me to death how sloppy their "locking" mechanisms tend to be.
  11. You know what throws me a little about this show? I feel like the guy they got to play Kirk actually looks more like the original Pike, Jeffrey Hunter.
  12. The VF-31s will look better than the VF-25 series I think just because the overall proportions feel better to me, but the VF-25s aren't bad at all, especially with the super packs. The Klan version is probably the most solid super VF-25 kit that exists.

I'm not necessarily criticizing making up markings to splatter everywhere to make it look like they know what they're doing, but I absolutely am going to call out printing numbers backwards, then claiming it was on purpose, and then doubling down on the idea that people might want backwards numbers (note: not mirrored, but with the digits in reverse order) and including a set of alternate decals to fix their screwup.. instead of just admitting it was wrong. Heaven forbid they admit that something obviously wrong was actually wrong.
  14. You know, I keep waiting for someone to remember that there was a sliding cover over the back seat once Yang ejected. Would be a really easy part to make, too. I might have to look into that. Interesting thing though.. the helmet-less Isamu there looks far more detailed than the original, and his hands actually reach the controls. Or maybe they just shoved that one into the seat properly?

  16. Seriously, I'm sold for maybe two of those, it looks like a really solid VB-6 kit. I do want to see how the classic destroid mode works without the figure riding it though.
  17. I know, I'm just dreaming that they'll sell all the extra bits separately, so I can grab a few more piles of missiles. They're not even including the fast packs this time, which is actually kind of insulting, considering how minor they are. It was stupid when Yamato didn't include them, and it feels even stupider for Bandai to backtrack on doing it right the first time. Maybe I'll try and pick up a 4th copy to repaint this time around...
  18. Hehe, I might add more details later, but I'm building this primarily for a VR-focused sim pit, so I couldn't see them anyhow. I'm leaving room on the back of the panels for extra stuff to be added if I want it later. The TACAN dial is kind of a "best cheap option" though. The numbers won't work, because I would need to either build a fancy gearbox to convert the motion into the right increments, or find myself a dual-axis multi-position switch dial with 14 notches. The two dial segments do work independently, but they're just driving a dual-axis rotary switch that'll increase or decrease with each click. It'll work for giving me something to interact with that isn't a cross-cockpit mouse click though, so that's all I really need.
  19. Heh.. and here I was hoping they'd make the heels not fugly. Probably asking too much, they really really do not seem to understand how the feet need to be shaped to work in all modes. Looking forward to the accessory pack though, I'll be happy to buy a few extras to outfit all the completely bare Bandai valks I have laying around.
  20. Somewhere in the workbench/modeling/3D printing section of the site, if I recall. I tried using the search, but it either came up with too much unrelated junk to bother digging through, or nothing.
  21. I had the same thought, but wondered if the colors in the photo might just be making it too saturated. That probably is the color it was painted, but it didn't come out that bright on screen. It should probably match the lighter blue seen on the panels around the deflector dish, the one directly under the starfleet emblem. I guess this sort of thing theoretically counts as being on my workbench, since it's my current project, but I'm getting deep into the DCS cockpit build process. While I know a lot of people make tutorials with laser-cut acrylic panels and backlighting, I decided to try what I had on-hand, which is just my 3D printer. I'm not worried about backlighting or gauges/displays for VR, so as long as the buttons are in the right place, they should serve me perfectly well (and I've left room in the radio panel for a frequency panel just in case). Bonus points if you can ID the component reference names, and what plane they're from.

I still don't want to give up hope on Arcadia someday putting out a PF version of that one, but I'd also settle for a DX version It's always baffled me a little about how much of a shelfwarmer the VT-1 tends to be, considering how much screentime it gets in DYRL, and how many iconic scenes it was the centerpiece for.
  23. I wish they'd run their "line-art accurate" filter through a common sense one too. I can understand wanting something to be screen accurate, but you have to draw the line somewhere, and I'd prefer it to fall on the side of things that make physical sense.
  24. I'm pretty sure the issue MANY people are having is related to the borked up elbow/wrist slide extension. Finding a place to actually apply pressure to make the arm slide into the proper orientation for fighter mode is not trivial to begin with, and they seem to have slopped glue throughout the mechanism.
  25. I don't know if anyone posted completed pics, but it's pretty easy to find a photo comparison. For reference, here's Jenius's review of the missile set, which includes photos comparing the Bandai and Yamato missiles in all scales: https://anymoon.com/blog/?p=13242 Otherwise, there are lots of pictures of the Hasegawa weapons set, both CAD and photos applied to the Hasegawa 1/48 VF-1 kits, so it's a pretty easy visual comparison. The most obvious difference is that Hasegawa goes all-in on the realistic details, and the pylons are a huge step up from what Bandai shoved out. Lots of good product pictures here. https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10289601 The biggest headscratcher about Bandai's version is that they went to the trouble of making the working flaps on the DX VF-1.. and then restricted them from moving with the missiles mounted. I did the comparison back when they released, and the pylons of the HMR missiles are literally longer than the DX version. Anyhow, as far as what would be involved in modding the pylons to fit the DX, the most reliable way would be to hack up the missile set and transplant the hardpoints from one set to the other, but what I remember seeing was someone making a 3D-printed part that could be glued into the Hasegawa pylons to allow them to mount on the Bandai hardpoints.
