New Macross TV Series in 20xx (sometime this decade)
Chronocidal replied to Tochiro's topic in Movies and TV Series
Actually, I don't think even the YF-21's belly packs covered the gunpods. At least on the Yamato version, they still just clipped underneath. The VF-22 holding them internally was sadly anime magic though, since the toys had nothing resembling adequate space to fit the gunpods under those belly plate additions. -
That thing is beautiful. Man, I wish Bandai would get to work on the rest of the canon ships, and then start making those game-based designs for real. Always preferred that style to the elongated rear section used in the old games. Now I seriously want a Bandai Missile Boat kit... original game, not the blocky X-Wing vs Tie Fighter variant.

Oh, nice! Yeah, the wings on both of mine can't do that, it's something about the little gray mounting points being too thick maybe? Pushing the wing hinges fully forward pinches the pivots under the upper fuselage, and just raises the wing tips a bunch. On one of my pair, the gray wing mounts were really sloppy as well, so while the wings themselves would stay in place, the gray pieces would just fall back and forth as I tilted the valk. The other one has nice sturdy pivots, so I put the packs on the wimpy one, along with the molded single-piece wing replacement, and figure I'll just leave them mounted permanently to not have to deal with all the itty bitty removable panels.

I'm not familiar with the design enough that I thought that about the legs, but I can agree it would make the design slicker. I think it still looks great in fighter mode, reminds me a bit of the designs from Yukikaze. The VF-2SS is absolutely a mess of an aircraft/ship design though. If overtechnology was an actual thing, sure, any mechanical hip joint strong enough to make a robot stand, run and jump would probably be strong enough to lock the legs in place in fighter mode too. In reality, and in a toy of this size? Not so much. It's kind of a struggle finding a place to hold this thing without knocking one or another major section out of alignment. I did notice you didn't push the wing mounts forward all the way either. All that tends to accomplish on mine is putting just enough pressure on the wing joints to make them flap up about 5-10 degrees.

I mean, the bigger question here is how many of those franchises cease to exist because Disney won't touch them with a 50 foot pole.

Macross Δ (Delta) Movie Gekijō no Walkūre (Passionate Walkure)
Chronocidal replied to no3Ljm's topic in Movies and TV Series
Fair point, maybe it's not exactly on purpose, but rather a side effect of the genetic manipulation processes the Protoculture used. Guess my knowledge of Var syndrome isn't up to snuff though. Is it actually a naturally occurring phenomenon among all species that Windermere just exploited, or is it actually something that could only be caused by their interference? I know Messer seemed to have dealt with it in the past, but I don't recall if Windermere was involved in that case. Thanks though, that does make sense for Earth to be one of their earlier experiments. Putting in the bird human as a self destruct mechanism does make more sense if they were in a rush to vacate the area, and not able to build a more substantial failsafe system.- 810 replies

I think trying to process exactly what Disney will be taking over is both too mind boggling and too ridiculous to comprehend for anyone to even attempt that yet. What I can see happening though is that a bunch of Fox-owned properties that don't fit the Disney image will probably get sold off to other parties. I mean, come on. Do you seriously think anything on FX is going to get a Disney logo slapped on it? Or that we're suddenly going to get a Springfield section in a Disney park? There's going to be some things that Disney gobbles up, and incorporates, sure. But there is just sooooo much of Fox that Disney is going to want nothing to do with, and I only hope they just sell all those properties off piecemeal, rather than outright killing them.

He wasn't ever that funny, no, but his characterization in the original trilogy wasn't spectacular, and he wound up having to play the straight man to the rest of the cast sometimes. I don't think I have an issue with him getting funnier in his old age though. The character always needed some development, and Hamill's picked up a lot of perspective over the years that would definitely change how the character works. I'm not sure when I'll get to see this one, but I can't say I'm in any particular rush. I might wait until next weekend, and see it with family, just to have my younger brother to bounce thoughts off of. I admit though, I'm tempted to spoil myself on everything just to see if it makes enough sense for me to care what happens. Given TFA, my biggest worry is that after all the build up to whatever gets revealed in this movie, it'll turn out to be far less interesting than any of the fan theories have been.

The Arcadia's shoulder pads also slide upwards though. I've never had any trouble with the range of motion on the existing shoulders, they were just fragile at first.

Ok, this is just awesome. Makes me really tempted to repaint one somewhere down the road. Might have to order a pair of Nexx ones when they come out to make a couple custom schemes.

Macross Δ (Delta) Movie Gekijō no Walkūre (Passionate Walkure)
Chronocidal replied to no3Ljm's topic in Movies and TV Series
Honestly, the whole "failsafe" theory of Var syndrome sounds like an obvious thing to me. Protoculture get smart about manufacturing their minions, and decide, "Hey, we need an easy way to control these masses in case they get uppity." So they leave the Protoculture ruins throughout that little cluster of space to manage the races in that particular area. The question that begs though is what changed between the development of the cluster in Delta, and Earth? And which one actually happened first? Earth obviously got the bird-human, and there's no way the resemblance to the Protoculture ship Windermere used wasn't on purpose. But Earth didn't get the ruins used to seize control of the Globular cluster (that we know of), and the bird-human seemed like more of an emergency self destruct mechanism than a control override. Var syndrome clearly took hold of the human race and Zentraedi right along with everyone originally from the Globular cluster, so it's not like the Protoculture's methods changed that much from one race to another.- 810 replies

This kind of thing is why I still purchase seasons of certain tv shows on physical disc. Looks like it's time to cram through all of Agents of SHIELD before the merger nixes that option, though.

Not sure about the chest area, but the backpack thrusters do actually have a little bit of a lock that clicks into place when they slide, at least to the rear. They still wobble around and look horribly fragile on their little struts though.
-
I can definitely agree that it feels cobbled together, but at the same time I don't think I can fault the HMR for that. The ship design itself is pretty much just a bunch of robot parts that kind of float around with no solid attachment to anything. The only thing holding any of it together is the stiffness of its own transformation joints, and while it doesn't make for a great toy design, I can't say it isn't actually accurate. There are a few areas they could definitely improve though. Some sort of notch or clicking joint to tell you when the hips are in the right spot for fighter could be nice. Also, the little nubby hands they included to fold into the arms are less than worthless, and actually make it more difficult to fold the wrists into the arms, because they pop off at the slightest pressure. The little ball pegs seem too undersized to hold anything, and I think I would have preferred a single piece solid fist to rotate in and out, for all the good those do.

Lol didn't mean to derail things too much. But it seems like the side fleets seem to be all developing their own production lines and designs at this point.

I'd be thrilled if we can bring that back, but the thought of literally everything else going along with it is making my head spin. That, and some conversation I was having with friends over the potential implications, and someone doodling a xenomorph in a tiara and ball gown.

They tried to deliver mine today from NY, so I'll pick it up after work tomorrow. Have to load it up with the super parts.

Wow, I thought the deal didn't include any of the television properties. That's... really bizarre to consider the implications of. I'm pretty okay with Disney consolidating Marvel and Star Wars, but bringing in everything else Fox is known for is a bit bonkers.
-
So the tails knocking the left pack offline is nothing new, and I modified most of my Yamato super packs to correct for it. Given these are knockoffs, I'd be a lot less worried about screwing them up by doing this. Thanks for the review and comparison, it's nice to know they're available. The quality seems decent enough that I might actually pick up a set for customizing into an orange and tan set for a VF-1D.

It's really looking like this is going to be a mid-point between a lot of other designs that came before it. Whether it winds up being the "Goldilocks" point of "just right," or an uneven mash-up that does nothing significantly better than any other version remains to be seen. I'll be happy to give at least one a shot, but the idea of another line of VF-1s to collect doesn't sound like a good idea at all. If they do it in 1/48 or even 1/35 (I'd personally prefer 1/32), it'll make a nice centerpiece, but I'm not replacing my current 1/60 collection any time soon. If Bandai actually does make a few of these, I'll be sorely tempted though. Given the option, I'd be up for the Hikaru 1J, a Roy 1S, VT-1, and VF-1D in 1/48 or 1/35.. provided I can make the space.

Macross pretty much runs on the aerospace development model that dominated the industry in the 50s-70s, where every manufacturer, contractor, and subsidiary was shoveling out new designs as fast as the wind tunnels could be built, and the military was buying all of them, to the point where you had standing fleets of thousands of aircraft of a dozen different varieties, all doing the same jobs. Engine and airframe technology were developing so fast, it made sense to keep pushing out new designs before the old aircraft were even worn out. You also got a wide range of quality out of those designs. You got some wonderful aircraft out of that era, but you also got some horribly short-sighted design decisions that cost a lot of people their lives over time. That being said, I kind of miss the Cold War. Airframe technology has stagnated, and computer technology has grown to the point that we're flying everything well past its intended life cycle, because we can keep upgrading the internals without significantly changing anything about the aircraft carrying around the boxes and weapons. Thankfully for us, Macross is a merchandise-based aircraft industry, so they'll find ways to keep new designs coming, regardless of whether anyone in-universe actually needs them.

Thanks, though I think the comments further down the page were a better read than the parade of twitter fangasms. Looking like a lot of people enjoyed it at least, but I'm still going in with no real expectations.

I admit, I'm almost not worried about spoilers, because they might convince me if it's worth seeing? But I'll see it anyway, so I'm going to try and wait. Overall impressions compared with the other movies would be welcome though, if anyone here has gotten a sneak peak.

So, that one in particular I've seen a few places, but never quite the same twice (quite like actual aircraft in reality ) Is that from one of the old VFX games? Historically speaking, that's like a mashup of a couple old F-14 squadrons, sort of a mix of VF-84 and VF-142 Ghostriders, with hints of VF-41 Black Aces. Truthfully speaking, I would easily buy multiples of any valk in schemes based on real life 1970s F-14 markings, especially if they do the scalloped white underside.
