  1. See, smaller is only good to a point. This new box looks like it doesn't share any dimensions with the actual VF-31 packages, which actually makes it significantly harder to store for me, because it won't fit within an existing box stack. It's like trying to play Jenga, or Tetris, and someone suddenly throws you two thirds of a block. I'm not that worried, and I'm sure it'll work out, but because I stack my valk boxes in a tall narrow closet, my stacks get very high, and I always try to maintain a solid support structure at each layer, alternating boxes to sit either horizontally or vertically. Until now, all of Bandai's boxes have kept certain proportions that allowed them to stack very evenly.
  2. So, this all begs the question of which version the digital version used in the special editions was based on, and whether this same model is the basis for the ones seen in the new films. And I thought the situation with all the versions of the Enterprise was complicated... One thing I've always wondered was exactly what the control consoles would have looked like. Through all the movies, I think we only ever seemed to see Han and Chewie reaching for assorted generic looking levers on the control panel, without any actual stick or yoke for steering... though I could be entirely wrong, and it's making me want to go rewatch all the cockpit sequences to make sure. The Bandai kits are an interesting blend of "studio model replica" and "what was shown on screen" versions, which I don't mind at all. There are some details of the filming miniatures that I really don't care if they aren't represented faithfully. Like, for years, I wondered why the old MPC/ERTL X-Wing kits had such inaccurate cockpit details and pilot, only to finally discover that the kits were built as direct copies of the film miniatures, including the interiors, which looked nothing like the live action scenes, and were occupied by 1/24 scale stock car drivers. On the other hand, one of the things that amuses me greatly about the new huge LEGO Falcon.. it's actually bigger than the filming miniature it's modeled after.
  3. At this point, I feel like Roid's is at least more likely than the green CF version, since they don't have to do anything fancier than dumping different colored plastic in the mold.
  4. So, the parts I'm hunting would be pretty rare to begin with, and not in common colors anyway, since my goal is really to reconstruct the Ideas Shuttle, just in case it gets rejected. The big pieces I'm missing are basically everything for the tank, and a few elements for the boosters. Getting one of the older Shuttle sets would be a step in the right direction, but apparently the crow's nest buckets used for the nozzles on the Saturn V have never come in white, which is what the SRBs really need. The VF-19 is rough 1/32 upscale of the Yamato 1/60 actually, with as many of the original features as I can cram in. Will probably forego the retractable gear and opening cockpit, but so far I've gotten everything forward of the hip mounts designed and transformable. The wings are also roughly laid out, and I've got a really good planform match by mounting them at an angle and using all sorts of angled plates. I expect the trickiest parts to be getting the legs and arms even remotely functional. The biggest issue I always run into with transforming LEGO is the near complete lack of any sort of sliding mechanisms, on top of the nasty limitations in terms of sturdy joints.
  5. Sounds like a good option then, though from what I understand the change in size between ANH and ESB also meant the majority of the greeblie panels would have to change as well. They're generally separate parts too though, so it's entirely possible they could do it. Either way, I doubt I'm buying a second one. This one's going to take a long time, and probably involve me actually getting a dedicated workshop, or at the very least moving out of my current apartment. That's a whole nother adventure right there.
  6. Does it actually? I hadn't thought to look closely at the underside, to see if there's a place to stick the extra two landing gear bays.
  7. Hehe, actually I don't see any reason for that, since this is a different ship. The Bandai PG one is modeled after the ANH version, while Fine Molds built the ESB modification, with the extra landing gear, and hull sections. The details are very different between the two.
  8. Just picked this massive thing up from the post office!
  9. Personally, I've been picking up a lot of the Creator, City, and 3-in-1 sets for a variety of reasons, particularly a few specific pieces, but I've also recently grabbed the UCS Snowspeeder, B-Wing, and Slave I, and I've got the US Capitol architecture set ready to use in rebuilding my UCS Imperial Shuttle. I might try and track down one of the Shuttle Expedition sets for the parts for the fuel tank, but those things are pricey. I've currently got all the parts necessary to build that Ideas Shuttle Orbiter (with a few tweaks actually), but the parts to build it fully have never been manufactured in the correct colors. My current projects are hopping between my VF-19 build, and a new UCS-styled X-Wing design that combines the usual swing-arm angled construction of the official sets for the nose section, but with layered slopes, plates, and tiles up and down the sides to give the fuselage a better shape than any official sets have attempted.
  10. Why not stick the sabers under the drone launcher covers behind the legs? Should be plenty of room under those doors.
  11. At this point, I feel like all bets are off. The Kairos is already being sold, we've gotten two variants of Hayate's, and 40% of Delta flight hasn't even been teased yet. If we were going purely off of screentime, the assorted 171 repaints would probably be before Arad and Chuck anyway, but then where's Bogue? I'm personally wondering if Bandai will even bother to revisit the 171 though, and even if they do, I'm not betting they'll fix any of the monstrous problems that design has. Anyway, however the merchandising goes, I hope they weren't just being cruel teases with throwing the VF-22 in. Still think the way it was included is flat nonsense, but if they weren't determined to rig an excuse for a toy of it, it would have made an infinitely larger amount of sense to steal something that was ready to fly, and wouldn't have required Berger to essentially god-mod an escape vehicle for them.
  12. Yeah, Bandai's decals for everything Macross-related have been pretty rotten for as long as everyone remembers. Screen-printed, thick, they don't like to fit the complex curved surfaces they're meant for, and they don't behave well with standard decal setting liquids. The printed panel lines are just one more layer on the pile of decal travesties. The only VF-25 kit I ever put markings on was 100% hand-painted, because I refused to deal with them, and I've basically resigned myself to never using any markings. The DXs will cover my interest in having the valks in the show schemes, while I'm fairly certain every Bandai kit I have is going to wind up in a custom scheme.
  13. What if you're actually misusing it? I mean.. no, it's not the market, and it would never actually happen, but I'd love to see Big West step in directly and slap HG upside the head for making trash of this level with one of their franchises.
  14. Nah, nothing of the sort, unless they've expanded Homeworld to let you explore and pilot each ship in a first person view. I want that first person experience. SC looks like you could literally explore the entire ship, walk right up to a VF-1, get in, launch, and then go flyby the bridge and salute another player sitting there. So, Elite Dangerous shot itself in the foot when they refused to let people play it offline. It had a ton of potential, and still has some features I truly enjoy... but it's boring. It's the Korean MMO of space combat, seriously. I know that's partly up to what each player makes of it, and it can be relaxing to soar through space looking for random stuff, but I lost all enjoyment for it when I got jumped by a random patrol of stupidly high-leveled NPCs, blasted into oblivion, and lost everything I'd spent the last week grinding to buy. Open PVP is bad enough, but when you get wiped to lvl1 by random NPCs, with no recovery option? Nope. Also, I'm so utterly sick of every single game nickel and diming its players with this or that DLC pack, especially when everything ED sells is things I could have made myself if they had allowed offline modding. Basically, the only game in the past fifteen years that's actually advertising the key features I'm looking for is Star Citizen. I don't even care if the actual game ever gets out, I just want a new engine to make fun single player content in that isn't ruled over by some money grubbing DLC factory.
  15. Considering they released the cannon fodder 31A before Arad's or Chucks, I think we need to just forget everything anyone expects them to do. There's been no word on either of those, and they've already released two versions of Hayate's 31J now (albeit one is a freakin' convention exclusive). Plus, there's been no word on getting the green Drakens, and the only other valks in the series would be more 171 repaints, which given their history, I expect to sell like a sack of rabies, and would be absolutely astounded if Bandai goes through the effort to release any new versions.
  16. Yeah, they just take their sweet time doing anything generally. Worth keeping an eye on, but it's not uncommon for delays of that length to happen.
  17. I'm going to confess, I actually love the prop-accurate glass-less frames, just from an "I can build this straight out of the box without having to paint anything" perspective, but for keeping dust out of the cockpits, glass is really the only way to go. Best of both worlds would be what they did with the 1/48 X-Wing, and have optional glass you snap into the frame, but they seem to have completely abandoned doing any larger scale kits at this point. A real pity too, I'd be happily fork over the cash for a few 1/48 kits of all the ships. I'd love a non-electronic X-Wing too, but I've already resorted to converting one of those to run the wings off of a turnkey hidden behind the rear bulkhead. It still runs off the same gearing, so I don't think the mod requires removing the electronics entirely, but that big honking battery box stand is hideous, and I'd love to be rid of it.
  18. I'm not paying that much attention, but I'm also not really all that interested in the concept of Star Citizen itself. I just think the gaming community has been in dire need of a new science fiction sim engine to build things in for over a decade. People have pushed the Freespace II engine to incredible levels, but at some point, you can't upgrade that old jalopy any more. The "canon" universe they're building is only vaguely interesting, but I want to see every space franchise rendered in that engine, so we can finally get that first person experience of a tube-launch from Galactica, or doing a flyover inspection of the Enterprise before walking to the bridge, or any other countless things that games in the past just haven't been capable of. The details in some demos make me think it'd be entirely possible to build a completely functional SDF-1, along with every other Macross mech and valkyrie.
  19. First thing I did on my Yamato versions was actually to file down the nubs inside the chest that lock into the shoulder tabs. There are enough other mechanisms holding the valk together that those really aren't necessary, and it really helps save the paint.
  20. Given Bandai's track record, I have absolutely zero expectations that it'll be fixed. They clung to the incorrect chest stripes on every VF-1 for decades before finally fixing them in the most recent HMR, as if it was some sort of trademark.
  21. I thought someone managed to pick up a KO fold booster, and the plastic was so cheap it fell to bits after opening the box? Or something like that.
  22. I know the Interceptor came with a spare gray window frame from sprue duplication, but I don't think there was extra glass. I think those parts are identical across all releases though. Also, dangit, I was hoping the bump meant Bandai was finally getting off their backsides and doing the B-Wing and Tie Bomber. On the plus side, my PG Falcon kit should be shipping in about a week, so I'll have plenty to work on until they get around to them.
  23. So, fun fact, this goes back clear to the Yamato release. I remember the exact same thing about mine, the tail section was insanely tight to fold up.
  24. That covers the ones in the legs, sure. If a part is molded in white, and painted red, I'd rather have it treated the same way to match, rather than have red plastic plugs that clash with the painted white plastic. That doesn't explain anything about why the thighs got red plastic plugs, while the arms got white plastic ones covered in stickers. That's just inexcusably lazy to me. Also, sorry to go off on this a bit, I'm just baffled why they thought it was an acceptable "solution," when I never considered it a problem in the first place. It's not that big a deal in the long run, I just can't force my brain to board that train of thought.
