  1. Pretty much, exactly. A terrible movie adaptation of a good book might sour the reputation of the book in the eyes of the wider audience, but it doesn't retroactively make the story itself bad. I've always felt like the novelizations of the prequels were better than the movies, because I could detach the stories from the bad acting, and imagine them being much better than what I saw on the screen. To be fair to TFA and TLJ, I haven't tried reading novelizations of them, so the same might prove true there. I did hear the TFA novelization explained Starkiller in a slightly more believable manner, and added some useful bits of exposition that were left out of the movie. It might be worth a shot to read those, and see if they help the movies work better in my imagination, if not on the screen itself.
  2. I think I tend to fall along those lines as well, just from a "what this movie brought to the franchise" standpoint. In terms of the prequels... I think time and nostalgia both play a part, because while I remember the acting and dialogue being bad, the story and universe still felt mostly consistent, and it's easy for me to do some mental post-production by imagining this or that line being said differently. You know how it's sometimes hard to remember what someone said if you aren't paying attention, or don't like them? That applies to bad movie dialogue, at least for me. I don't have a hard time filling in visuals and story with imaginary dialogue that feels more natural. (Also, reading the novelizations of the prequels might have a similar effect.) The sequels though have the opposite problem. The acting is between good and great, but the story is so off-the-rails, I want to strangle half the characters for their terrible decisions. There are absolutely ways I can imagine the story starting and ending the same way, with most of the middle gutted, but that's a lot more work than hearing lines differently in my head, and it doesn't make up for the bad taste left in my mouth by the characters' actions. Like.. in the context of a story, I can like, or even identify with a character whose part is acted badly. It's much harder to accept well-acted characters who are written doing things that make me actively dislike them.

I can kind of understand TFA's approach, in the sense that it tried to win over fans by giving them pretty much exactly what they liked in the past, but it also was so blatantly obvious at how zeroxed the entire thing was, they even hung a giant flashing lampshade on it in-movie through bits of dialogue. It crossed the line from being a callback to being self-plagiarism. I think the core of a good movie was still there, but the only thing really carrying it was the nostalgia. TLJ just went and shot that all to hell by ditching the nostalgia, and replacing it with bad writing. Half of the characters suffered from terminal stupidity, and it ended with 99% of the Resistance dying in the worst main character screw-up in the franchise's history. ESB was a dark plot that had a lot of the good guys get hurt in some way, and still ended on a hopeful note. TLJ spun that on its head by leaving me thinking the whole movie would have been better off if several main characters had died in the first five minutes, and feeling completely dissatisfied that they saw absolutely no personal consequences for their mistakes. Agreed though... Rogue One was good in all the sorts of ways it needed to be. The battle at the end was some of the best action in any of the movies, and I still wish we could see ANH re-remastered using the CGI assets developed for it, because they're such a huge leap over the effects they made for the Special Editions.
  4. That's actually been one of my biggest issues with the "new" canon. If you're going to relegate the EU to some alternate universe, stop dipping into it for ideas. Come up with an original concept, for crying out loud.
  5. Right now, I'm mostly wondering which death star that's the wreckage of. It makes literally no sense for any of the first one to have hit the moon, because they were orbiting a gas giant that I'm pretty sure would have laid claim to any debris fairly quickly. The alternative means they're going back to Endor though. How many more stops are we making on this nostalgia trip again?
  6. My favorite post-TLJ image is literally Luke going pure Ghost Nappa on Kylo. I would pay for someone to digitally insert a ghost Luke on Kylo's shoulder giving snarky commentary.
  7. Suppose there's no reason they can't be dredging up the idea of dark side force ghosts. Maybe Kylo goes on a soul searching trip for a new master, and Palps starts haunting him.
  8. I'm... so utterly confused. Baffled at the title, and all the implications associated. Also.. that last shot. Is that wreckage from one of the Death Stars? I'd assume that means either Yavin IV or Endor. I'm going to guess Yavin, just from the bit with the medal (either Han's or Luke's from ANH). Like.. I don't want to get excited for all the callbacks. The entire premise sounds bonkers. Can we at least have our 20th Century Fox intro back this time though? I admit, I'd pony up for a ticket just to see the full title sequence again.
  9. I'm so painfully torn on this. Torn between the throes of overwhelming nostalgia, and the "... that's not right" feeling of hearing different voices. I'm certain the remastered/reorchestrated music will be amazing, but I just want to be done with the reboot/remaster/reshoot/refilm/regurgitate trend overwhelming everything. I'm tired of it, and I hate that it reinforces the feeling that creativity is dead by banking on all the stuff that used to be good, without any attempt to extract what made it good in the first place, and apply it to something new. I know this'll be fun to watch, but at the same time, I feel dirty for the idea of enjoying it just for the nostalgia, without it really having any merits beyond that.
  10. Yeah, it is the most likely option really. I can't be the only person who bought two just so I'd never have to transform them. Though, if I remember correctly, my last attempt transforming my "damaged" copy (the one missing a chunk of gold paint on the underside) went pretty smoothly. I think half the difficulty with the transformation is lining up the back panels so they lock in place for battroid. The other half is probably correctly extending and unfolding the shield arm. Ignoring gerwalk altogether seems to be a great way to avoid frustration.
  11. I'm actually still surprised they bothered to do the 1.5 version of the VF-27. It made sense, considering all the improvements since the original VF-25 design, and the new booster packs from the Frontier movies, but I'm surprised the original sold well enough to garner a redo. As far as the 262 goes though, I'm fairly amazed we haven't seen mass reports of broken parts, especially all those rotating bits in the wing mounts. The thing is insanely over-engineered, and probably has twice as many moving pieces as it actually needs, but I don't think I've heard of any pieces actually breaking. It makes me wonder though. Was Bandai's QC just extremely good? Is the design actually sturdier than it looks? Or does the lack of reported breakage stem from low sales, and a customer base that mostly consists of collectors who are extra careful? I still want the pope hat version though. The delta wing always looked so much better than Keith's souped-up custom. Given how fragile the head mechanism on the Ba model kit is though, it makes me wonder if Bandai gave up entirely on making a DX version of it.

  13. The big question there is whether hunting down the old Yamato releases would actually be cheaper than the current prices for the DX.

  15. I got an "acknowledgement", and I was able to go back and fix the address on the order from my account, so I'm assuming it's at least thinking I have one for the moment.
  16. Now if only NY were up at NY. I actually refreshed it on a whim before I shut down my computer, and saw the same thing.. if that one goes through I'll be amazed, but having one potential pre-order was more than I was really hoping for.

  19. NY's "take a number" system is absolute bull. I finally loaded the page.. then clicked search... and got dumped back into a queue of 500.
  20. To be entirely fair to Eaglemoss, the Diamond Select stuff is equally hit and miss, and a lot harder to overlook at the larger size. Also, am I seeing things, or did Bandai release a light up Voyager kit?

    I don't think you're alone, though I'm not sure why anyone would say it's better or worse than the Yamato/Arcadia version, because it's like they literally shrunk it down. The 1/60's wings and tails didn't really have any detents to stay in place either, and I always thought the Yamato's nose was too long as well, and had a similar issue with a gap (though it was less noticeable in the larger scale). The markings... eh. I chalk that up to Bandai being Bandai. The lack of wing droop bugs me, but I'm just glad to have a real FB2012 VF-4 finally, and the smaller scale is more desk-friendly.
  22. Yeah, much smaller than 1/100. Those monsters were flying cities that were probably in the same size category as the SDF-1.
