  1. Or, they use this temporal pileup to reboot the entire franchise in a future free from copyright infringement? I know that's not what they will do, because it would fail hilariously, but I'd still love to see them try. I didn't realize how close this actually is to the one TNG episode where all of the alternate timelines merge, but because of how many sources Robotech has farmed its content from, it's more like that episode, but the sector full of Enterprises is joined by the Prime Universe version, plus the Kelvin version, plus a few star destroyers, a small fleet of whitestars, battlestars, and basestars, plus the odd squadron of space-faring Spitfires.
  2. I know it's not keeping the item in perfect condition, but if you aren't worried about that, you could just plug the hole with clay, and then even cap it with a piece of sheet plastic, and then paint it to match. Still irritating to have that kind of sloppy assembly though. Maybe it would be worth trying to set up a part exchange for people with too many of one part, and not enough of another? It seemed to solve a few folks' problems with mismatched HMR super packs.
  3. I'm going to wait for any kind of official anything before getting hopes/disappointments up over that, I think. That's just so vague and lacking in context or details, that I have no idea whether it means folks in China were celebrating Robotech, or celebrating for Macross.
  4. Oh, now that sounds interesting indeed. I'm curious what effect that might have, if any. HG may or may not be losing a fairly big market in China, but I'd be interested to see how that affects their overseas production of toys/collectibles/junk. Will Kitz Concept be able to continue manufacturing Macross goods under the Robotech label, or will they be having their products overseen/seized by Big West? Edit: I can't make heads or tails of that document, though. Seems to call out trademarks for symbols or logos used on sleep masks?
  5. So.. I don't want to be the downer here, but keep in mind, regardless of whether they can legally sell here or not, the production numbers are still determined by Bandai, and they are under no obligation to sell their wares in other markets, regardless of how profitable it might be. Bandai has a long and extremely irritating history of leaving money on the table by just flat out not producing enough to meet demand. They have fine tuned their production numbers to efficiently use what production capacity they have, and a suddenly larger market does not mean they will be able to turn around and produce for it overnight. You notice I didn't mention Arcadia here.. because they seem to have absolutely zero problem producing to meet demand, and buying any of their Macross merchandise is really no more difficult than buying something from Amazon at your leisure. I don't expect that to change regardless of the situation with HG.
  6. I actually don't think a piece that simple is worth the effort of a recast, whether it's a kit or toy. I believe the missing piece is just a flat plate with some vent vanes on it, correct? I would just make one out of sheet styrene, by cutting a base panel to cover the opening, and then either scribing vent lines into it, or gluing smaller strips of sheet styrene to it. If you want to get creative with it, you could also make vanes by gluing together a stack of alternating-width strips of plastic, and then cut the stack to fit into the space on the backpack, but the space there really isn't deep enough to fit much more than a textured panel. In other news, I dug out some of the other Polar Lights Trek kits, and snapped them together as a test. TOS Enterprise is probably the most sturdy of any of them. The refit went together decently as well, but sadly the Reliant kit has some serious structural issues. The parts break-down for the nacelles and roll-bar pretty much guarantee it's going to need a lot of glue, sanding, and putty, because despite being a "snap" kit, there is pretty much nothing at all holding the nacelle pylons in place, and they're even pretty warped (I'm painfully aware of the ironic pun).
  7. So, just to clarify the current situation though, didn't Big West snap up the Macross trademark in Europe, or some portion of it?
  8. Interesting note from Earthquake-ville. The DX is one fairly hefty and sturdy valk. I had one of my Hikaru 1Js perched in gerwalk mode on a top shelf earlier this week. Came home to find he'd taken a 5-foot swan dive during the shaking... but none the worse for wear. Gunpod hand had popped free, and one wingflap was popped out of a socket, but valk still looks in really good shape. Had an HMR VF-4 and VF-1D take a fall off my computer desk as well, but those survived in similar condition, with parts popping off, rather than breaking. All in all, I'm more relieved than I can really explain in words that I found my place in as good a shape as it is. I'm reconsidering my display options for the future though.
  9. Oooh, nice! How long is that one? I know it's a pretty small ship deck-wise, but how does it compare with the TV/Refit Enterprise?
  10. Just got a new 3D printer delivered, been putting it through some tests. I opted for a larger enclosed type, and one that only translates the bed up and down, rather than forward to back, after the alignment issues I had with my smaller first one, where the bed travel caused taller prints to wobble. I did one calibration print, and then turned to my old WCIII Excalibur model to test the accuracy limits. I sent this same model to Shapeways sans panel lines some time ago, so I should probably update the version there. So far, results are promising, though I think I need to switch to ABS from PLA for better sanding/polishing properties, and I need to experiment with raft/support density, since the back end of this model got a little mangled where the supports connected. All printed in one really long print of about 31 hours for a 7-inch display model. The panel lines turned out really well, so I may just spray it with primer to see how the material looks dulled down. Once I get a spool of gray ABS, I'm going to print each of the individual body sections separately so I can clean them up into a proper kit.
  11. I thought the newer 1/1000 kits were Polar Lights molds, rather than AMT/Round 2? I've got the TV, Refit, Reliant, and Klingon D7 from them, and while the TV designs are light on detail, they go together well. Which reminds me, I need to see if they put out a Motion Picture D7 version.
  12. Seriously. About time we had a good Pacific theater flick, and despite any reality of the situation, naval battles always wind up seeing larger scale and more spectacular than anything on land.
  13. Wow, do you mind posting a picture of the damage when you get a chance? I'm really curious to see where the stress mark occurred, and I think it would help others here avoid the same type of damage, possibly by supporting the wing differently when snapping the missiles on or off.
  14. I'm hoping I did, I just gave up and bought one at NY's first markup. We'll see if they come through in any reasonable amount of time.
  15. The lack of the 1701-A is actually kind of a bizarre choice there, considering the older kits used that one. It wouldn't be too hard to replace the registry with another set of decals, but since the entire saucer is one giant decal, you'd have to clip it out and touch up the paint by hand.
  16. Provided I can get ahold of them both, Roy's going to go in fully-loaded strike fighter mode, while Hikaru's 1S is going to be permanently displayed in the "Bodolza Barrage" pose, with a printout of Minmay's dance on the viewscreen pasted behind him.
  17. Having watched that review, it looks like they performed minor retools of the older three pack to make it snap-fit. Otherwise, the kits look identical in part breakdown. And in hindsight, with the trouble certain decals gave him, you might be better off masking and painting some of those kits. For all the trouble the C and E seemed to give him, the decals look like mostly solid colors, with the major details being molded in. The E especially looks like the decals were really underwhelmingly plain. Funny enough, the older three ships seemed to come out better overall, with the lack of molded features being a better surface for the decals. I'd probably just get the D kit by itself. Anyhow, course correcting back on-topic, are there any more details about the XL Akira? Depending on the paintjob, that's one ship I'd seriously consider getting, just due to the lack of any other kit or toy of it being available.
  18. So I had to go look up a review of the 7-pack you mentioned, because I wasn't aware it existed, but it (sadly) turns out just what I expected: a re-boxing that combines some very old AMT molds with some slightly-less-old AMT molds, along with what might be a relatively new mold of the NX-01. I'll spoiler the details so as not to derail too much. Anyhow, I'm actually intrigued by this set now, and if I see it for a good price, I might pick it up. I did find a pretty lengthy review of them, so might be worth a watch. The preview of them looks pretty fantastic, which I have to attribute to the decal wraps, because none of those kits has remotely that much molded detail. I think the bottom line will really come down to how much you like applying decals.
  19. Yeah, the weathering was overdone on that first one, it looks like the same pattern painted on the original FX version. I just wish all the subsequent molds hadn't blunted the nosecone so much. The Trench Run set seems to be going for around $300-$400 right now, which is way too rich for me. We've seen several re-releases of certain vehicles in the past few years though, and I'm still lacking a Vader Tie, so maybe I'll cross my fingers that we get a re-release in the future.
  20. I actually wish I'd kept track of this mold after I got the original FX version. I picked up one of that one on clearance for $25, and the while I could take or leave the gimmicks, I thought that original release was the only one with a properly shaped nose cone. I think I actually grabbed a pair of the Red Leader models to customize, and one incomplete FX version just for the cone, but I never was able to get the Dagobah one. Did that have the original nose as well? I'm seeing what looks like two versions of the Dagobah variant. There's the one with the plants (and a swamp creature, I think), and then there's one that had all of his camping supplies and R2, but no figure. I'm still hoping to modify/upgrade one of these into a more detailed display piece, but it's going to take replacing quite a few parts, and the Bandai 1/48 kit kind of scratched my itch for a larger scale X-Wing replica. I hadn't heard about a Deagostini X-Wing, but yeah, the wing mechanism would absolutely need a rework. Looking up some photos of it though, I'm thinking it really isn't as nicely proportioned or shaped as the Bandai kits. Maybe Bandai can be convinced to so a PG release in 1/24 some day...
  21. Mostly that's because the entire kit is actually in roughly 1/48 scale. Bandai took all of the old EU stats verbatim, and just decided to make the ship 9.6 meters long, while every indication in the movies is that the ship is much smaller than that. Great work on the kit though, and the size of that seat helps eat up some of the space in the cockpit so the pilot doesn't look undersized.
  22. Doesn't need any shaving, just unscrew the backplate, and you can loosen the shoulder screws enough to make them move very easily over those nubs. Just need to undo three screws (one in each wing, and one under the base of the hip swingbar), and the backplate will pop off and give you access to the shoulder mounts. Loosen those until the arms swing over the nubs freely, and you're golden. Edit: I just realized you might be talking about shaving down the hinge in the actual shoulder pivot, rather than the bumps on the backplate. I've never seen a reason to modify those, unless the shoulder joint was already broken.
  23. Out of curiosity, what scale pilot and seat? That looks more like a 1/72 than Bandai's attempt.
  24. What's a funnier discussion to have is how many Star Trek model kits get used in Star Trek shows. I'm pretty sure the USS Constellation in "The Doomsday Machine" was made from the original AMT kit released at the time. The same thing happened in Return of the Jedi, if I recall.. a lot of the ships used in the Endor sequence were the MPC kits. These even got re-used in Star Tours, and if you look really closely on the ride, you can actually see the mounting pins those old kits used to hold the wings together.
