1. Finding good Anime, old and new, as with anything else entertainment related, is like searching for a precious jewel; then as now, most of the stuff that comes out is utter garbage, but even today you can find good to excellent anime that won't disappoint by being overly pedantic, or silly, or dull, or delving into nonsensical existentialism (Evangalion, Gasaraki)...but it all depends on your personal tastes. I'd bet that a large part of the reason you can't get into "new" anime is because you have changed, matured, or out grown anime in general, and the only reason you enjoy the old school stuff is due, as eugimon stated, to healthy dose of nostalgia. You have to look through a pile of cubit zirconiums to find a single diamond.
2. I liked the last episode. It was way better than I expected from what would typically be a filler story (recounting of events, personal musings, etc.); it served as an opportunity for character development for many characters and as a springboard for further conflicts. Overall, I'd give it a solid B. I also enjoyed how the writers captured the self serving, arrogant, near seditious, attitude of the reporter's profession, in their single minded self-appointed mission to tear down those who secure their freedoms...very topical.
3. Ditto on the "self hating fan" bit. I find myself in the category of those who like the hardware (Toys and models) more than the shows themselves. It may be because I'm technically oriented, I'm an engineer, that makes me so fond of the mecha from many anime. However, even I try to hide most of my stash so that visitors don't see my little addiction.
4. Heck, if those three companies could be brought together to create an ultimate version of the beloved Macross Mecha, why not forego a rehash of the 1/48 scale and go straight to a 1/32 version of all the smaller VFs. Imagine the possibilities for "accuracy", gimmicks, poseability, display value, for 1/32 renditions of the VF-1 series (all variants), VF-4, VF-5000, VF-11, and VF-17. They could also collaborate on 1/48 versions of all the larger fighters. They'd be shelf hogs, extremely expensive, have little to no play value due to size, and worth every bit...Dream on
5. You sir, have just won the "most rousing endorsement" prize of this entire thread.
6. So all the Hell elements are missing, or at least there is no hint of it in the trailer, but it does take place on Mars, in a multi-level, claustrophobic environment, and something akin to the BFG is in it...and the chainsaw. Although I have no illusions of this movie being anywhere near good, it does look like it could be an entertaining, brain dead, way to waste 90 min...can't be any worse than AVP...well, it could, but I choose to be a little optimistic.
7. Box all four figures together and sell the set for no more than $140 US and I'm all over it; but at $65-$80 a pop, once you add shipping, for tiny action figures of a mostly obscure Anime, I'll pass, no matter how articulated...it's impossible for me to justify the price on a bang-for-your-bucks basis. Too bad, they do look nice.
8. That turned out so bad that it lasted 18 uninterrupted years on TV in various incarnations and in 10 theatrical movies...no sir, not successful at all. (j/k) Sorry, just couldn't resist. You are right, Star Trek's unrealistically utopian view of the future always rubbed me the wrong way. I much rather watch a show that shows humanity with all of its best and worst aspects, and BSG delivers this in spades...granted, they do go a little overboard sometimes with some of the irrational choices some of the characters make, but overall, the show is so well written that I can forgive it some minor flaws.
9. Get all the 1/48s you want first. They are all expensive to begin with, and they'll keep getting more and more pricey as their supplies dwindle...get the CF and GBP when they come out or you may find yourself spending 3X as much to acquire them later...LV anyone? Once you have all the 1/48s you want/need, then go back to completing the 1/60 line if you so desire. They are unlikely to appreciate in value within the next 5 years anyway, so if you need to track a particular 1/60 down in 3 years, you'll be able to get it at a reasonable price...likely even bellow MSRP.
10. Reminds me of that guy who committed suicide, not too long ago, because his on-line, in-game, relationship with another character went sour. Sad and pathetic just about sums it up.
11. The memories of a show you enjoyed as a kid are always better than the reality of re-watching the same thing as an adult. While you have changed, matured, and become more discriminating, those shows have remained the same putrid garbage they always were; very few programs that we all watched as kids have aged gracefully, specially Saturday morning cartoons and '80s adventure shows. I, for one, cannot sit through "The A-Team", "MacGyver", "Air Wolf", "Miami Vice", etc. nowadays...they bore me to tears. It sucks growing up!
12. "Ancient spirits of evil, transform this decayed form...into Monrah...the ever...living!" I've always loved this invocation. Other than some choppy animation in spots, and incredibly stilted dialogue, the show was pretty good for most of its run...it got progressively lamer towards the last season. Compared to its contemporaries, however, it held its own...GI Joe, Transformers, He-man, etc. were no better, and often much worse depending on what floated your boat as a kid.
13. I sure hope that you don't have any, then. 318455 Wow...that was a cogent rebuke.
14. Excellent episode last Friday. The one thing I didn't see comming was Callie pulling a Jack Ruby on Boomer's Lee Harvey Oswald. It seemed totally out of character, but was a great twist that serves to keep the Colonials in the dark concerning the Cylons, since their one captive toaster is no more. Edit: I just had a thought...could it be that Callie herself is a Cylon, and acted, unwittingly, out of programming to eliminate a perceived threat to the Cylon's plans, rather than out of indignation or hatred for Sharen's hand in getting the Chief in hot water...??? Edit II: shame on me, I got my historical assassins mixed up. JR offed LHO, Sirhan Sirhan killed RFK.
15. One thing is certain, Tigh's drinking problem does not stem from some deep seated insecurity, or character flaw, or discomfort with his rank, or inability to seat in the "big" chair, or confrontations with subordinates, or the burden of command, or humanity's desperate situation, etc...no my friends, it results from being married to that woman...I know that if I were married to that harpy/shrew/floozy I'd drink myself into a stupor too.
16. I'd love to see Yamato produce a 1/48 VF-1D; however, I believe that to be very unlikely. As mentioned before, that model entails far more than a simple recolor, and there is a limited number of recognizable VF-1D versions to make production worthwhile: trainer VF-1D, virgin road VF-1D; other than those I suppose that a low viz and a brownie could also be made as limited editions, but that's about it. But it's fun to dream...
17. My guess is that it will have minimal diecast/metal content, just like the 1/48 VF-1s. The swing bar and landing gears will probably be metal, but not much else, other than the screws of course. To me that's actually a good thing as it will make the toy lighter, more detailed, with higher "gimmick" content, and less prone to floppy joints and paint chipping...just like the 1/48s. I'd love to see the VF-0 get the 1/48 treatment, but at 33 cm it will be plenty big and be a welcome addition to the 1/60 line. Now, if Yamato would only do 1/60 destroids...
18. Is it just me, or was Crashdown's execution at the hands of Baltar extremely satisfying? Face it, Crashdown was a dangerously incompetent leader...a good leader weighs all advice and considers all available information, including new intel, before committing subordinates for what amounts to a suicide mission, but he was completely unwilling to deviate from his initial course of action and ready to shoot a subordinate to enforce his will...the guy was asking for it.
19. I totally agree about the HUMVEE. They could of at least used something a little more generic and not so "LOOK AT ME I'M A HUMVEE!!" Chris 313990 I found myself saying "how quaint, she drives a HUMVEE" when I saw that episode. The episode itself wasn't as good as the season opener, but it had great moments; however, Starbuck's ride just struck me as an unimaginative cop out...even the original series had its own land vehicles (BSG 1980's colonial motorcycles excluded).
20. They look awesome. Is there any word if these items will be available States side? Domestic release would be preferred...shipping from Japan is a killer!
21. I don't know which I'd prefer, a more modern design than the Galactica or the original design as a sort of fan service. Either one of those ideas regarding the design of the Pegasus would be awesome, something different...anything but a Galactica "class" Battlestar clone or, even worse, a stupid "kit bash" like so many Star Trek ships.
22. I would no worry about that. The recasters on these forums will satisfy the need for copies of these hands soon enough after the toy is available.
23. Wow! Love the Aliens Pulse Rifle. I'm afraid to ask, but how much?
24. What a great season opener that was. SG1 was only slightly better than ordinary, even with the addition of Ben Browder that show is beginning to get a little long in the tooth. Atlantis was pretty good, nothing spectacular, but very entertaining; although derivative, it works rather well and is mostly solid. Now BSG just blew me away, from the wrapping up and further confounding of the Helo/Boomer/Starbuck situation on Caprica, the drama surrounding Adama's injuries, Tigh's inner conflicts, the whole "fracked" jump and following resolution (with a few minor quibbles that have already been alluded to), the flashback scenes, to the special effects, specially how the Base Star just disgorges the Raiders from its arms...it looked like a hornet's nest just let loose. There was so much going on that it could have bordered on sensory overload to keep track of it all, but the episode was so well written, acted, shot, and edited that everything just flows together and, instead of leaving you overwhelmed, it just made you hunger for more and say to yourself: "it's over already???" At the risk of going into complete fanboy hyperbole, this IS the best show in this genre on TV today, and perhaps the best ever...only B5 even got close. Hooray to Ron Moore and the Sci-Fi channel for breaking away from the tired old Star Trek template and giving us fans something truly special.
25. WOW! Thanks for that link. As good as the solid grey prototype looked, the painted version gives you a much better idea of how this will look like in production...stunning. @Ocean: It looks like it will have the upper thigh guns by the looks of it in the color pictures; I can only assume that the center gun will be there also. As for landing gears...I haven't the foggiest.
