I'll definitely buy Macross toys after the VF-1... but there are some rules I would probably stick to. 1. Is the design one I like? I love the VF-500, VF-4, VF-19, etc... but I'll admit there are a few in Kawamori's Designworks that don't really do much for me. 2. Is it a good toy? I don't care much for removable parts in transformation, but I'll make exceptions if people praise it anyway. I also don't want to buy another VF-11 and have to tiptoe around my house for fear that the hip will explode. Basically, it has to be a good toy, well-made and something that would look great next to my other valks. And yes, I would wait to buy until after I read the reviews. I do that with every new Yamato sculpt and it's saved me alot of money and frustration. There are a few things I'm glad I don't own cough Q-Rau cough. 3. Is it the right size and price? Sure, I love the 1/48's... but not every valk, particularly some of the obscure valks in Designworks, really need to be made into toys that cost $150. I'd be much more likely to buy one at a smaller scale and a lower price. But I don't really see any reason Yamato has to stop making VF-1's at all. There are tons of 1/48's that they haven't made that I would gladly buy. Also, people seemed to really, really like the low-vis. Why couldn't they continue to put out VF-1s forever?

Hmmm... not to derail this goofy thread any further... but the point of saving endangered animals is to protect Earth's species from extinction... not whether or not you like the tiger. Anyways, to make a stab at being on topic... Playmobil's always been a bit off, not so much that we're anti-European, but there is a difference in culture on either side of the pond. It's evident in the difference between American and European television commercials, etc. It's no big deal to have kids playing with a toxic waste disposal unit in Europe, but it just seems weird to make that toy in America. What American kid would rather have the Museum Janitoral Crew set when he could be normal and have Firemen or Police, or something a bit more... "normal", in the American sense. Of course, that's kinda what makes it great. Personally, I think the Playmobil Satan is the first toy I'd buy my kid.

The problem I have is that ADV's subs generally suck Then I very obviously wasn't talking about you. I just think some anime fans can lose sight of some things. One of my best friends has very poor eyesight and cannot read unless she's right in front of the TV, or projecting on a large screen. She loves anime and if it wasn't for dubs, she wouldn't get to enjoy any of her favorite shows. I'm just glad they're making Megazone on DVD, it isn't as though it would have been any cheaper if they hadn't dubbed it - and for that alone I can ignore that godawful narrator script. Besides, maybe he did get laid alllllllll summer long... it was just off-camera.

Legend of the 1/55.....historic events....
Blaine23 replied to Shin Densetsu Kai 7.0's topic in Toys
For me, it was easily a little bit of both... I knew Robotech way before Transformers ever came out and in my part of the country, the only imports we got were Datsuns in the 1980s. Anyway, I was geek enough to have seen a Takatoku ad in a comic/model magazine, some shop in CA was selling them. Of course, when I was 11, one did not order things from ads in magazine from shops all the way in CA... no matter how much you begged your mom... besides it was 50 whole dollars! A few years goes by and Robotech went away. By then Transformers was going strong and you could find them in even rural places like Tennessee, thanks to Children's Palace - anyone else ever beg your parents to take them there? When I first saw Jetfire I knew immediately that it was Roy's VF-1S. No hesitation, no silly paint job was gonna fool me. The design and mechanics just DOMINATED all of the other Transformers I'd seen. I bought one and managed to get ahold of a cousin's Jetfire in a GI Joe trade. Me and a buddy tried to customize it into Skull One, but it looked like a monkey's ass. And that was my last custom, thank heavens. So, in summary, I was already a big Macross (well, Robotech - but that wasn't my fault ) fan before I ever saw Jetfire... but once I had Jetfire in my hands, that's when I fell in love with the 1/55. I still have it, by the way. It was the closest thing most middle americans could get to a Takatoku back then. I'm glad they made Jetfire - without it, I probably wouldn't have stayed such a fan of a cancelled, badly dubbed version of a great anime. -

"Drop the ball" is american sport-based slang... basically it means that you could have scored a goal, but instead didn't do anything with your chance. I think what he means in terms of Macross is that the show and movie had a great following, but the long gap before a sequel (or possibly Macross II's weak reception) caused fans to turn to Gundam, which was churning out sequels like mad. Or the Transformers, which was becoming big at the time. It's a sad point, but probably dead on... Macross has never been that great about timing and momentum, in terms of popularity. Only goobers like us have stuck with it faithfully for so long. -
Looks great... I actually like the Skull 1J look, despite its non-canon-ness... it seems a likely fit for Macross, just something we never actually "saw" in the TV show. Especially good work on the pilot fig... I dig the skin color and face work... I had to look up at my 1/48's to realize how tiny those pilots really are. Great work.

I just buy what I like. I'd like to get SuperO, Elint, and GBP releases for 1/55, which would make my 1/55's complete... but not because of any completist vibe... simply because I like 1/55's. Of the 1/48's I like to get a Max 1A and a Hikaru 1S (which would give me all the 1/48's, minus the Low-Vis, which I don't want at all) - but I don't care enough about them to spend the money. If they were picked up at a good enough price, used or on sale - I'd buy... but not otherwise. Completist collections have never really been my thing. I just like to pick up whatever really appeals to me.

Apparently it works all too well... I had no idea we needed to include the offender's name... I sorta figured that by reporting a particular post, as opposed to a thread, made it clear. Thanks for the clarification, Roy. Now run from Agent ONE's hugs... he can be a bit rough. -
Okay... I'm all for protesting through song... but the Backstreet Boys? That ain't gonna win anybody over to your cause, homey. I love listening to everybody grouse about dubs... it's just so funny when 99% of anime DVDs include the option to turn them off.

Actually, the VF-1A CF Valkyrie (Production) is oddly half equipped for armor. The backpack piece is fully booster capable, but unfortunately the legs and arms are not. I believe it has something to do with the transition for Yamato in making FP capable 1/60's from non-FP capable 1/60's. But to be fair to those grousing... Yamato told us all from the beginning that the 1/60 releases would NOT be FP capable, until the Super 1J was released. I'm just glad my VF-1D is FP capable... he swiped the Hikaru 1J's armor... now the nakked 1J is waiting patiently for his GBP armor.

Dude... that's great... I just emailed that link to about 20 people. Thanks for pointing it out.

Waitjustafreakingminutehere.... You're not the king of bling bling? Crap, now I have to start my search all over again. Damn. Seriously, thanks for the explanations, Jung and Kurt... this has had me wondering for a while myself.

Unfortunately, the RX-78 has never been made as a nice detailed 11-12" DX Gundam toy... which is the only kind I buy. I should probably thank god that line hasn't gone that big or I'd be broke.

Picture Request.. The hottest babe of Macross
Blaine23 replied to scand's topic in Movies and TV Series
Get to work, my little friend... It's been too long since I have appreciated some of that EXO art. Some of my favorite stuff. Unfortunately, I am far less organized than MaXXxxx - your art is dumped into a very unorganized folder called Macross Fanart. One day I'll get more organized... one day. -
What if it's an anime that questions faith? I know EVA has tons of religious symbology in it... are we supposed to pretend that it doesn't? Or ban talking about it? I know where you're coming from GM, but without seeing any specific examples... is calling for more moderation really neccessary?

Blaine23 replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Sweet... I can't wait to see this one... Sam Raimi is the bomb and I'll bet this one makes ginormous money. -
ROFLMAO!!!! Oh wait. You were making a joke, right? Yeah... lots of realism from a gaming system based on ripping off different anime designs. Whaddya expect from a guy who hates diecast. I guess everybody has their reasons for what they like or don't like. No one design or toy is gonna please everybody.

Wristwatch that transformed into Robots...

I had a gold one with no strap. He was so damn lame he actually was relegated to being Bumblebee's bitch in my TF army. And that's low, man. -
Bah... that CF pilot's a wuss. He's still got all his limbs! J/K... nice PS work, calvin.

Awesome.... but you left out the obligatory "why can't I buy Macross toys in the US?" "Cause HG is evil" "Nuh-uh - without HG Americans would never have seen Macross!" "Yeah-huh, I would too have" "No!" "Die! Die! Die!" <mod shows up> MOD: "Are you guys arguing this crap again? I'll ban you all to lesser boards!" EVERYBODY: "uh, nope, nothing to see here... Just discussing scale." <mod leaves> "Your mamma works for HG!" "Your mamma is Carl Macek - diss, burn!"
-
Damn, I must admit they do look awesome. I'd buy them obsessively if they were around 12" tall. Can somebody Macronize this crap for me?
-
Good lord... do we really need to have a "why do I buy toys" thread weekly? Either buy 'em or don't. Must we "share" our feelings about it? Is one of you guys secretly Oprah?
-
That's creepy. Were you also the guy sitting in your car outside my house last night?

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Metal toys and transformation make perfect sense. And Paint chipping is realistic! If a valk was real... don't you suppose there'd be paint chipping on it after a few thousand transformations? Folks on this board go goo-goo and ga-ga whenever some modeler-type airbrushes "realistic" shading, panel lines, and battle smudge, but everyone gets all prissy about paint chipping... I'd say the paint chipping is far more real than any of that foo-foo paint effects. Let a toy be a toy. At least metal doesn't have to worry about yellowing.
