  1. I still have a few holes in my collection of the volumes that were released in English, and the volumes I'm missing are either hard to find or really expensive when I do manage to find one. Whoever thought up their release scheme was an idiot. Multiple books with the same cover being released at once made it really hard for comic shops to keep things straight. They should've just stuck with the Japanese format for the things. I wouldn't mind a reboot, really, if it condenses the story and actually, some of the early art isn't that great.
  2. Look for specific fansub groups that specialize in older shows, like Anime Classic, Live Evil, Sailor Spork or Doremi.
  3. Kind of amusing appearance in an recent Cracked article: http://www.cracked.com/photoplasty_159_18-classic-movies-if-theyd-been-made-in-japan/
  4. I haven't watched Overture in a few years and I have a good quality file of it that Central put out a while back, so I'm really looking forward to this. Think I'll do that as soon as I get off work.
  5. New season is starting up. Of the four shows I've seen so far, looks like Puella Madoka Magica will be the one I'll be watching for sure (that first episode just oozed atmosphere). Yumekui Merry is a maybe, depending on how the next couple of episodes go. Infinite Stratos wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be, but still not my thing (fight scene before the opening was pretty cool, the fanservice level was tolerable, but I'm not a fan of harem antics and the characters were walking cliches). Rio: Rainbow Gate! was just plain awful on just about every level.
  6. I've been watching more movies. King of Thorn was pretty good. Some nice animation and a decent mind-screwy plot. I imagine it's a shoe-in for getting licensed, if it hasn't already. Mai Mai Miracle was another one that I enjoyed. It's obviously going to be compared to Ghibli films, but I think there's enough to it to set it apart from those. I'd say that the depth or characterization was more than what is found in most Ghibli films (and I don't see Miyazaki having a scene with a bunch of school kids accidently getting drunk any time soon). I also appreciated the historical aspects of the show; both the main setting of a small town in post-occupation Japan and the flashbacks to the Heian era. The Munto movie, on the other hand, was very disapointing. It was mostly a rehash of the last few episodes of the TV series with just the last part that was new.
  7. Right, but saying that that's the fourth battle they've fought in that place (with pretty much the same results every time) makes it sound pretty insignificant.
  8. I agree 100% on the use of Bolero durring the battle is very cool. I think 10 is the movie most people associate with the piece, but in my mind I just see space ships blowing up whenever I hear it. The battle in the atmosphere of the gas giant is also cool. I can't think of anything like it in other media SF. I think the biggest thing the film does is get one used to the scale of the setting. The casualty report at the end, with what sound like staggering numbers, and then finding out that the battle wasn't even important enough to get its own name does the job very well. The one thing that always felt odd is the bar fight scene when Kircheis shows up. He doesn't feel like a real human being; like he's too perfect. This made sense later on, but was a bit jarring the first time.
  9. I liked the second movie and wasn't disapointed with it at all. I definitely recommend watching it as it ties up the series quite nicely and I thought it did a good job of pulling the political commentary together as well.
  10. I'd just never heard of it before and I wasn't seeing much in the way of information on it outside that website. The prop version of the plane itself reminds me of the ones in Wings of Honneamise.
  11. Finished the Loups Garous movie and was disapointed. Aside from my complaints about the adaptation (though they probably did the best they could condensing what is a fairly dense novel), I found the pacing to be way off and their attempts at generating emotional impact fell flat. On the up side, I at least didn't find every adult in the anime version to be completely contemptable like I did in the novel. Trying to decide what to watch next. I was going to get around to finally watching Konpeki no Kantai, but discovered that it was one of the things I lost in a hard drive crash earlier this year and I'm not being able to locate a torrent for it again.
  12. Is this thing real or just an elaborate fansite? http://www.stavatti.com/MACHETE_HOME.html
  13. Just finished Production IG's biographical documentary of Miyamoto Musashi and enjoyed it thoroughly. It was nice to see some actual analysis and not just regurgitation of facts (or more likely the myths built up about the guy). My only complaint is that they laid the blame for mythologizing of Miyamoto solely at the feet of military necessity stemming from the Russo-Japanese war, and avoided mentioning the building fascist system of the early Showa era, which to me seems the bigger culprit. Still, the fact that they state that bushido is a fairly modern notion is itself more than I was expecting. Tonight, I'll be watching the Loups Garous anime. Having read the novel, I'm curious on how it got adapted.
  14. I say start witht he first film (My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars) and then watch the main series. I say leave the side stories until later. Either way, release order or chronological order, save the second movie (Overture to a New War; incedently, both this one and the one above are actual theatrical films, not OVAs) until you're about a dozen episodes in, as it it's just a re-telling of the first story arc with a slightly different focus.
  15. Berserk, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, Silent Möbius, and Vinland Saga are my favorite titles.
  16. Cagliostro isn't really like other Lupin movies/specials. Miyazaki kind of fudged with Lupin's personality in that one, which is why Monkey Punch and a lot of the hard core Lupin fans didn't like it. Vs. The Clone is probably my favorite of the movies/specials. Green Vs. Red was fun in a trippy meta- sort of way. Probably not recommended for someone who isn't familiar with Lupin though. The others are rather hit or miss. I do recommend watching the original '71 TV series if you get a chance.
  17. Part II is also one of my favorites, being the show that turned me into an anime fan. Just finished Katanagatari last night. What an amazing last episode. It turned an OK, if otherwise fun but forgettable series into something great. I'm still going over it in my brain and may end up re-watching it real soon.
  18. Here's a great bit of an interview with Itano and how he came up with his missile launch technique: http://schoolgirlmilkycrisis.com/blog/?p=1946
  19. Co-worker of mine just sent me this, and I thought it was really cool (sorry if it's something everyone's seen before): http://www.flickr.com/photos/lockheedmartin/4256659363/
  20. Not anime, but for manga there's Vinland Saga. It's a historical fiction set mostly during the early 11th century viking invasion of England. It's by the same guy who did Planetes actually.
  21. I'm a huge Honneamise fan, so glad to see people watching it. Of the new Spring shows, I think I'll be sticking with Arakawa, Giant Killing, Angel Beats and K-On2. I'm still up in the air about Night Raid and Five Leaves.
  22. Although not a fan of his work, every thing I've heard about the man himself makes me think he was a pretty good guy. Certainly anime fandom and the industry in the US would not be what it is today without him. 58 is way too young and my condolences go to his family.
  23. I'd agree that it was very true tot he novel. Heck, in it's two hour, forty minute running time, I could've read the novel itself.
  24. The one where Oshii spoofs his own student protest days and the one with the two captains stuck in a love motel because of a typhoon are brilliant. I'm currently watching Durarara!! and Startship Girl Yamamoto Youko while waiting for the new season to get going.
