The Disgruntled Anime Fan: The Robotech Macross Mystery
VFTF1 replied to Einherjar's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Oh my GOD!!!!!!!!! WOW!!! I feel so cheated! I mean! I have wet dreams about Lisa Hays and Rick is my all time hero and I cried when Ben died! I have a copy of Robotech Art 3 at my bedside and just finished reading how Lyn Kaifun was killed while trying to heroicly rescue Minmay from General Edwards! And now I find out it was ALL A LIE?!?! This Marcos series sounds really different! But it also sounds so neato! Can you fellers tell me please - why, if Marcos is so cool, did they change so much of it when they made Robotech? And why, if Marcos spawned all of these other cerials like Marcos Zero, Marcos DLRY, Marcos 8 AND Marcos: The Final Frontier, did NONE of this come over to the USA!? I mean - this stuff is great! Hey - wouldn't it be neato if it turned out that the Vaganas from Marcos: The Final Frontier were like the cousins of the Invid?! Oh - and final question, while we're discussing Anime - can someone please tell me: what does he transform into? I heard that this turns into some kind of angel or something - anyways it looks really neat! Oh - and ok - I admit that while it is shocking to learn that Marcos in Japan is so different and awesome and interesting, then you really have to admit that at least we got the best Marcos toys over here in America. I mean - nothing beats the Masterpiece Veritech series! Wooo! My Masterpiece Veritechs are so awesome! They got magnets and even the fingers can be posed! So - maybe the Japense have made a better Marcos series than us, but we gots the bestest of the toyz biiizach! Pete -
Is this true? Pete

Those anime background pictrues definitely favor fighter and gerwalk mode. But the limitations on Battroid mode are not so much a result of chunkiness as they are of the design of the VF-25 Messiah - it just doesn't have as "humanoid" a frame as some of the earlier fighters - it's a mix of looks; and in a sense has to be in order to be the "25th anniversary Valkyrie" that it was meant to be - an homage to all previous fighters... Will be happy when these come out. Pete -
Sweet. Nothing better than returning to Macross world and seeing this Pete

As usual This is an interesting conjecture- theoretically, you are right that every subsequent VF-1 should theoretically incur diminishing marginal returns; but I would question that - after all, it would be like saying that if you were in bed with Misa, and then Minmay came in and said "can I join the both of you?" - then letting her in would dimminish your marginal returns? And then, if Ranka and Sheryl burst in and said "he! Us too!" would marginal returns diminish further? Of course, you could argue that perhaps macronized Klan Klan joining the fun WOULD diminish marginal returns, but not because you added another unit, but rather due to geometrical problems that result in, as Borat might say, CRUSHING! But yeah - you make a good point. The YF-19 is indeed auwesome and it's so very different... Dag... I guess in this case I'm going to have to recommend what I usually tell people: JUST - GET - THEM - ALL Pete

I highly recommend the Unicorn. The sliding panels work great and the transformation is awesome. The only problem with it is that unlike other Gundams, it is almost impossible to move the arms and legs without having them fall off, since they are made to come off easily in order to transform each particular piece and then be reattached. But once you decide on a pose - he holds the pose solid. Really an excellent peace...Will post some special pictures later to convince you. Plus - it's all white:) Just like the intention for the very first Gundam before Bandai told Kill Em All and his people to add color Pete

I got Millia (Quid Rau) and never got a Max No way I'm sharing her with anybody! Pete

Continuing on the Real Life vs Macross theme - but with a twist: Real Life: The girl you love turns out to be in a sexual relationship with her cousin. SDF Macross: ....oh sh#t! Real Life: The sweet and harmless girl you love actually turns out to be a Queen Bitch. Macross Frontier: ....oh sh#t!!! Real Life: The Enemy you hated with all your guts turns out to be just as human and victimized as you. SDF Macross: ...oh sh#t!!!!! Real Life: Your sister has a quarrel with her boyfriend and then kills him during a sniping engagement Wait. I guess it can only go so far Pete

Too bad I want to know if it comes with a nice box and maybe a booklet with nice Minmey pictures and stuff like that. Mine will probably arrive sometime in January Pete
-
Minmey is out! Anybody gotten her yet?? Pete

Uff...what a relief I was shocked when I read your post - even though I am the master of sarcasm, I took your totally serious and was like "oh no Kyp! Where is your love??" But it's good to hear that everything is fine now. Uf. What a crisis! Pete

Dag - poor VF-1D. Whenever I see pictures of yellowed toys, I can't help but think of those toothpaste commercials with the yellowed teeth that suddenly become white a shiny following a good brush... and I have the urge to grab a toothbrush and ...well...brush...the...Valkyrie with toothpaste. Seriously. Would that work? Pete

Very nice Shiyao! That's the new one, isn't it? It looks like a flaming Zaku Cool. Pete

I have no electricity in Poland, so this problem does not affect me. Ok - no seriously; I do have electricity (although sometimes they switch it off for a couple hours), but usually my Valks are all snug in their boxes and in a cool closer (cool in the sense of temperature). Right now, I've been disoplaying all of them on my shelves, and don't really feel like any of them have yellowed. But then again - NONE of my toys have ever yelloed. Transformers or otherwise... Pete

That's Henkei Prime. He's a voyager class figure. Pretty small. Pete

Those magazine scans are nifty, but I can't get around how I totally don't like the Macross II designs bleh yucky. Pete -
Those rules are terrible. Seriously Well - ok - the only one that is good is number 4 - no cheap toys that don't look good and are just cheap. Ignore the other rules and get more VFs - but personally I would recomend that you just get the 1/60 v.2s rather than hunt for Super and Strike parts for the 1/48 Pete
-
Heh - yeah - dolls are more expensive; but then it's always been that way - even at the "lower end" My Little Ponies and Barbies were always WAAAY more expensive that Transforemrs and GI Joe. Thus, I always told my mom she was lucky I was a boy Pete

For me, personally, the proportions on Minmey are all wrong. The long legs, the small breast size, slender arms... but Minmey's proportions are totally NOT like that. The proportions of the CMS figure that's coming out is more accurate to how Minmey looks (at least insofar as I know her - which is mainly from SDF M TV). She's more compact. Her legs are not long; although they are certainly proportional and nice - but they are not loooong. Her breasts are also bigger than on that doll, and - finally - her face is more "charlie brown cheeks" - she has a girlish look. Here - she's just too polished. Finally - the skin - way way waaay to plasticy. They need to give that skin some life. Kaiyodo's Fraulein line achieves all of this far better - although I do understand that they have the luxury of not having to actually dress a doll, but simply mold the clothes/figure as w hole... Maybe it's the effect of DYRL? In any case - I just can't get myself to root for these dolls beyond being superficially pleased that they are trying to make them... And it's not the price - I'm used to Yamato charging kidneys so the price doesn't bother me - I just ... don't like it... It's not that I hate it or anything - but I can't find myself loving it either.

I'll sign it, but don't expect me to read the fine print (or otherwise!) Pete

Oh yeah; that a picture of my custom 1:1 YF-19 on my airfield in Italy; right next to my wharehouse of 1/48s and Italian Marble. Pete

Well, if the question is do we want another exclusive - then I agree with the majority on this point: I don't... and here's why: Exclussives are fine if you're dealing with cheap toylines like Transformers of GI Joe, where every toy is in many ways compromised and not really high class; and then you take one or two of them, paint them pink or gold or black or whatever and say "exclussive!" - fine... But ALL of the Yamato valkyrie are perfect - that is the goal. That is the idea. All of them must be the best possible. So what exactly is an 'exclussive' supposed to look like? The Weathered 1/48 Roy shows us, that it can only look WORSE. Or are they supposed to produce a super duper new mould - say a VF-17 at 1/60 scale, invest all the resources into making that and then announce "we're only producing 1000 of these! Exclussive!" That would be silly for them Exclussives don't work when you're dealing with what is essentially an exclussive upper market range of goods. Pete
