  1. Do colour and stereo sound cause headaches in 15% of the viewing audience? Did either force a viewing surcharge on the audience? Will the loss of colour and stereo sound affect the story as much as the loss of 3D? It's a gimmick to differentiate the theatre experience from the home theatre experience. Pure and simple. And now that TVs 3D TVs are being massed produced, I'm sure they'll replace it with a new gimmick. Perhaps we'll see a revival of Smell-o-vision .
  2. So, from the links I've gleaned that it's the exact same movie (plus new intro), made 3D? <sigh> Can 3D go away, now? It's a gimmick to part more money from gullible movie goers, pure and simple. Anyhow, I guess there is one good thing about this rerelease - the movie is finally getting a theatrical release.
  3. Again, that depends on a number of factors. The biggest mitigating factor would be that the SV-51 is mass produced. Therefore, by the economies of scale, it's both cheaper to manufacture and cheaper to maintain (in the sense that there are more spare parts available, and that the parts of the aircraft are standardized.) Of course, if both craft are mass produced, then things might be different. Nevertheless, the last time I checked, the aircraft of Soviet/Russian lineage are a lot hardier than those of the USA/Western European family (how many of these can land/take-off in a farmer's field without incurring FOD?!?) So, it's highly likely that the SV-51 has a lower maintenance rate as it's components are designed by engineers who were accustomed to creating tougher components.
  4. It all boils down to conditions. If the underlying conditions of the Macross universe aren't changed (ie: we need an anti-giant variable fighter jet, yesterday), then the SV-51 would win. Why? It's designed expressly for combat deployment and was in mass production while the VF-0 was still in trial manufacture of test models. It definitely wasn't rushed into production as a test bed for new technologies, like the VF-0 was. As for the argument that the VF-0 was easier to manufacture, I don't remember coming across any assertions toward that claim in any of the official text that I've read and/or translated. Now, if the underlying conditions were different, and, say, multi-purposefulness becomes the main requirement, then the VF-0 would be the winner. Simply put, the VF-0 has more exposed surfaces capable of mounting things like extra fuel tanks, FAST packs, supplemental dorsal hard-points and so on, than the SV-51.
  5. Alright... there are now two dates being listed. >.< Yahoo: 10.11.26 http://store.shopping.yahoo.co.jp/amiami/bok-3333.html HMV: 10.12.17 http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/product/detail/3925174 The majority of websites that I checked listed the former (or nebulous "November"). HMV is the only one giving a date in December. Argh!
  6. No. I said it takes a lot of energy to force an object through a gas at high speed. The rest is embellishment of the point.
  7. Correction, 2 years ago. Maybe even sooner. From my experiences, the last time I saw someone being ridiculed for liking Macross 7 wasn't very long before the start of the "The MW rewatches M7 together Thread", which started just over a year ago. So, yeah. Laughable & no tears, either.
  8. You, too. Without going into detail, Japan Post was privatized in 2007, and Japan Post Service Co., Ltd. is the private company that inherited the assets of the former government company. It's only one of several private companies that provide postal services in Japan. As a private company, it's up to them if they want to conform to a foreign country's import restrictions or not. If they deem it a money losing process, why shouldn't they opt to discontinue packages sent by air. Again, stress on the air, as surface mail is unaffected. It must be stressed that Japan Post Service Co., Ltd. is not the only option for postal services. See this article for alternatives and their responses: http://www.ranmagazine.com/2010/11/japan-post-to-halt-all-air-parcel-services-to-the-us/ Not sure why everyone's getting bent out of shape, as the majority of members don't appear to be affected; and of those that are, as the alternatives are common knowledge for their contacts in-country, it's not like they're up the creek without a paddle or anything like that. PS: can a mod change the topic title + description. As it's a) implying that it's effecting the whole world, when it's only 1 country; and b) it's not indicating that there are alternatives for those most effected.
  9. Good episode; in the sense that it gave everyone something to do. I also like how they've given the show a memory in the past few episodes. And yes, any episode with a Stargate woosh and a stampede is a good one. Anyhow, the more I hear about the Destiny's mission, the more I'm reminded of "Men in Black". What with the galaxy being in side a marble; unfathomably huge aliens playing with a marble containing our own galaxy, and madness inducing thoughts like that.
  10. It's all in how one uses the output. Take the Bugatti Veyron. It's capable of "1,001" horsepower. However, the engine actually produces 3,000+ horsepower. Where does that extra 2,000 horsepower go? Lost as heat. Enough heat, that one of the test models had a 2 or 3 m jet of flame coming out the rear, caused by the hot exhaust igniting the air :!: So, it has nothing to do with spinning turbines, even though making the turbines spin is a bi-product of producing thrust that is shot out of the rear of the engine. Actuators are also a lot more efficient then heat-expansion as a form of motive power. Without boring you all with the science lesson, if you include super materials (ie: super conductors, frictionless joints, etc.), super efficient actuators and other goodies that OTEC allows, it's no stretch of the imagination that a VF could move about on battery power alone. One should also keep in mind that there is infinitely less air friction (drag) when moving as a battroid at humanoid speeds, then there is when trying to ram through the thick atmosphere. I'm pretty certain that some of the output is also used for cooling of the airframe itself, in those circumstances. Anyhow, I'll try and simplify it further: - battroid mode: low energy costs to move like a humanoid - fighter mode: high energy costs to move like a jet.
  11. Doesn't effect me. Live here. Witnessed the most amazingly fast service here yesterday: wife ordered a new vacuum cleaner from an online vender two days ago between 22:00 and 23:00. Arrived yesterday between 15:00-17:00. That's a 17 hour delivery time :!:
  12. Macross Chronicle #1-50 Great Mechanics.DX (any issue after #4, sans #10) For the Japanese language impaired, see signature linky or dedicated MW thread: http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=33597
  13. Good stuff. Probably the most interesting is that it creates a change in the status quo. The revelation of Destiny's... destiny, is also intriguing. It also paints the theme that the series keeps espousing in new light (belief for a lack of better word.) I'm also looking forward to next episode. Hopefully it won't be a let down like the previous episodes that I was looking forward ended up being.
  14. These days, my all time favourite is "Macross VF-X2". Sure, it's not an anime series per se, but parts of it are animated. Runner up would be "Macross: The First".
  15. No. You said, "As far as minority of 7 haters.......I seriously doubt it's a minority. Most of us just keep quiet nowadays because it's just getting old. " Which, in your re-post despite being a long and arduous way to say that we all fundamentally agree, completely ignores the main thrust of my argument: posters should stop trying to polarize the debate into one of two extremes. In other words: if you can't be bothered to care anymore, then you're not a hater. IMHO, it's stemming from many members being tired of negative, baseless statements. Of course, one of the features of MW is being ripped to shreds for almost any post. So, I guess one should interpret that as people with negative opinions of M7 not being singled out any more or less than any other member. 2nded.
  16. Seconded. I know of at least 4 online Macross PBP RPGers from the area (Lower Mainland/Island). One can't get a more niche Macross fan then that. And if there are 4 of them... If you did, it wasn't very clearly presented (yes, went back and read your post. Many times. Sorry, wasn't there.) Indeed, you did not. My post that you've responded to was a generic shot-gun scatter-shot aimed at all who keep attempting to polarize the debate into lovers and haters (you know who you are). Note: I didn't say neutral. I said "not care". In general, not caring for something has a more negative than neutral connotation, no?
  17. Nothing comes to mind at the moment. I think others have clarified the answer to the original question ("what is the difference between a laser cannon and beam cannon?") better. If memory serves, more than a decade and a half ago, one of the English anime mangazines (Protoculture Addicts? Mecha Press? Something else?) did analyze beam cannons in anime in general. The article is probably not worth looking up, as, if memory serves, beam cannon is a term deliberately used because it is vague.
  18. Same publication as last post. Finished next two pages: http://www.macrossroleplay.org/forums/index.php?topic=2634.msg40762#msg40762
  19. I think you should be careful of pigeon-holing Macross fans into "M7 haters" and "M7 lovers". What's most likely closer to the truth is that the silent majority don't care for M7 one way or the other (though I feel the need for the caveat of fans not caring enough to voice their opinions about the series; again either for or against). In my case, I love the setting presented in M7. I also love the economy-of-line Kawamori-san used in the VF designs. As for the series itself? Didn't hate it nor love it. Looking back, what sticks out the most (and probably what was the most interesting), is the band aspects (lots of practicing, performing, getting higher and higher on the charts); and also the echo of that arc in MF with Ranka (breaking into the music industry and becoming famous) and Sheryl (limited mostly to the arc about her fall from the top of the charts). But that's just me.
  20. I wanted to be a Hallowe'en grinch, but at the school that I work at, it was nigh impossible. So I got the opposite: Hallowe'en overload (up to a month lead time prepping lessons and materials, and then a solid week of Hallowe'en themed classes). Anyhow, costume was a Domo-kun mask whipped up in 20 minutes on a piece of cardboard. Then on the 2nd day, I found (at home) a mask made out of a paper bag that I had whipped up years ago. So the costume evolved into Domo-kun mask covering paperbag ghoul. The funny thing is that it worked, most of the time. Almost every time I dropped the Domo-kun mask, the kids jumped when they saw the ghoul. Hee hee hee.
  21. Re SO2E06 Goody, an episode that got me excited about what's coming up in the series. It was a mix of good (loved the comedy. It's quite welcome. There were also some genuine surprises and interesting revisits to previous events - perhaps viewing them in a new light?) and blaurgh (this episode, too, is episodic (as in the "crisis" of the episode is resolved in the episode) and pretty much reset (reverted?) to the series base as of the start of the 2nd season (ie nothing changed, characters have been restored to their baseline, and the characters know as much as the audience). *SPOILER* Anyhow, IMHO, the most interesting part is the revelation that the ship is reading their minds and implanting "dreams" into their heads. It's made me take a second look at the fate of Tamara's baby. No deus ex machina, but only the ship operating to protect it's human passengers? Though it begs the question: did Destiny itself create the planet that some of the civilians stayed behind on? Anyhow, the series has got me thinking that the ship was designed as a means for the Ancients to ascend. But perhaps not as fully or completely as later Ancients achieved. But that's just me.)
  22. Bluargh. Well, there's always Youtube, and it's ugly cousin, Ms. Torrentino.
  23. ROFLMAO. Short. Sweet. To the point.
  24. Started translation of: Great Mechanics.DX 8: Reinvestigating the History of the Macross World: 0 to F http://www.macrossroleplay.org/forums/index.php?topic=2634.msg40732#msg40732 So far, it's just the first two pages. But, man oh man, what a killer Macross Chronology! (By this I mean lots of small point text >.< )
  25. Might be a Codec problem. Do you also have the lastest version of the recommended software?
