  1. Voted Grinch. Need to see Christmas Story. Was thinking of writing in Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.
  2. Is that the adult film ad with credits showing several of the SDF Macross staff as directors or whatever? It's mentioned in the Animeigo liner notes.
  3. What are we supposed to be seeing in the DYRL game opening? Is that the DYRL version of how the Prometheus was destroyed at the beginning of Space War One? If so, that means Hikaru and Max were already pilots at the time.
  4. I wouldn't want to be a Mod, so as I see it that limits my rights to complain about the Mods. Not that I would complain much anyway. But I do hope that the mods would come away from this incident with an appreciation of the effect that "Moderator" title under their name has on how people react to them. Yes, it is intimidating, and it can be infuriating if you find yourself in an argument with a mod which turns into a battle of egos or a flamewar, since you feel like you're treading on thin ice while the mod can do whatever he wants. It doesn't help when the mod has intimidating slogans in his sig or elsewhere. (Not that I view sigs anymore, personally.) I think a simple acknowledgment that the Mods understand this effect (whether they want to do anything about it is another thing) would go a long way to putting this argument to sleep and allowing all sides to retire and reflect.
  5. Miyatake designed the Q-Rau for the TV series; I assume he also did the TV redesign. But you're probably right that whoever has say-so likes the updated versions better. Unfortunately, I don't. But I'll still probably pick up one Q-Rau. Definitely not the Max, but not sure if I'll go for the red Millia or a standard-issue. If the latter is green, that might be close enough to the TV version to tip the scales. And yes, it will be bigger than a 1/48. From the Compendium, height overall = 17.1 m (not sure if that's measured to the top of the antenna or top of the body). At 1/60 scale, that comes to 28.5 cm, or over 11". The 1/48 VF-1 is only 26.5 cm tall in battroid mode. (Compendium toy production page.)
  6. Scientific info: http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/Quakes/...nc40148755.html http://earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqsUS/Qua.../nc40148755.htm News: http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americ...sp?story=475710 I didn't feel it, but I did feel one last week that was centered in Oakland. (I'm in Berkeley.) Regarding the original question, these seem like good ideas: http://www.win.org/county/depts/ema/equake...es/sccgeq04.htm
  7. In that case, Roy is still shooting through the books in between the bookends.
  8. Yeah, but the question is who inherited them?
  9. This guy was reviewed on the old forums. I think it has a little less diecast than the originals--or none at all. At least one person sells them on eBay for $19.99.
  10. Good eye. Thanks for pointing that out.
  11. Definitely not a T-26. Turret is offset in the wrong direction, for starters. Image courtesy of www.onwar.com. This might be a good place to hunt through: http://www.onwar.com/tanks/index.htm

    1/60 CF Pilot

I could go for a TV-style pilot as well, to replace the DYRL-style pilot in my Hikaru 1J.
  13. I believe his VF-1A was destroy in the lift inside the Zentraedi ship. So he needed a new plane anyway. That was long before he hooked up with MIllia. He got a new 1A when he returned to the Macross--it was the one he fought her in.
  14. Whoa! If you stacked them up (like Voltron), you could make a furry 6 year old child. If we had monthly awards for the funniest thing said on MW, I'd nominate that.
  15. Hey, even Kakizaki got his own paint scheme in the series. Slightly back on topic, inspired by the Revell box, I'm once again going to campaign for a Valk in the "jungle camo" scheme often featured on AF jets during the Vietnam War. At least, when I get the space/tools/skills, I hope to do one.
  16. My wife and I will celebrate our third anniversary in May. She likes cartoons and anime--especially anything by Miyazaki, and the Lupin series. I even managed to addict her to SDF Macross.
  17. Here's another picture (from the games section).
  18. I watched the scene in slo-mo and although the battroid pushes off from the enemy mecha and may give a very slight leg kick, you can also see that the thrusters are sometimes lit and sometimes not. Also, the thrust "jets" which come out of the backpack right before it surfaces give it away. I was thinking a solid fuel which has fuel and oxidizer already mixed, but I think you can't turn off a solid fuel booster. Could you use pelletted fuel? Otherwise, some of Vespaeda's suggestions sound good to me. The backpack thrusters are described in the Compendium as "Three Shinnakasu ARR-2 maneuvering rocket motors in GERWALK and Battroid modes." This is different from the VF-1 thrusters, which are "Four Shinnakasu Heavy Industry NBS-1 high-thrust vernier thrusters." Good question. Maybe it's treading water. Like imode said. Not much different from a Tomahawk. A rocket booster pushes it out of the water and into the air, after which the jet engines take over.
  19. Well, we don't know the exact tone of Mays' comment...and it sounds like Ahnold was trying to fake his way through the encounter. But yes, a really nice guy would simply introduce himself. I didn't exactly support Gavin, since I'm not a SF voter and I probably paid even less attention to this SF mayoral election than many of the others. But I know SF needs some fixin' (even though I always like visiting the place) so good luck to whoever's trying to fix it.
  20. Hm. Why is there a Q-Rau in the same section?
  21. Okay, that is a licensing issue. Please visit the the licensing debate thread where I've posted my answer, dated Dec 18 2003, 12:14 PM. Edit: all we see of the VF-4 in the original TV series is Hikaru playing with a model of it. I believe it's in episode 36. There's a shot of him with the model over at RT.com here and here. There's also a picture of a full-scale VF-4 (or the test version) in Macross Perfect Memory, in the story "The Lost Two Years". Oh yeah, I think the lineart for the VF-4 is also in the mecha section of MPM. Correction: as noted by azrael below, the plane shown in the series is the VF-X-4. Although there are many small differences, the giveaway is the lack of canards behind the cockpit on the test fighter. As you can see from the posted image, the plane in the RT comic is closer to the VF-X-4 than the VF-4. Another shot of the same comic book art is here.
  22. Well, his real name is Jarrod Trout. Go up a level from that page for more customs he's done. Here's the link: http://www.geocities.com/duom/gundam/gundam.html
  23. You're right, the nose/cockpit has a different shape, the engine nozzles are different, and the vertical fins are canted out instead of in. Still, the layout is very similar. It definitely comes from the original Mospeada--it's not a HG innovation. See these links: http://homepage.powerup.com.au/~cyclone/ve...cles.htm#combat http://www.artemisgames.com/robotech/Resea...cha/Combat.html
  24. Yes to your comments on the VF-4. No to your comments on Yamato. Some of their VF-1s are the DYRL designs and have "Do you remember love" printed on the boxes. Others simply say "Macross" on the boxes and have a different date on their copyright info. (1982 vs. 1984, I believe, based on the ones I've been able to examine up close). These include the VF-1D and the various Super VF-1J's (but not the FP VF-1S, since it's a Strike). The VF-1D never appears in DYRL (to my knowledge) and the VF-1J only appears in armored form, not Super and not with the Max/Millia colors. Based on the copyright date, it's pretty clear the non-DYRL Valks are based off the same lineart that was used as a basis for the TV animation, since the lineart was completed in 1982 (March to be exact, according to the findings of fact in the various court cases). The Low-Viz is a special case--it doesn't say "Do you remember love", but it's not related to the series. There's no DYRL indication on the packaging, but I don't know the copyright date on it. BTW, Radd, here's the best online essay I've found on merchandising rights--coincidentally, it pertains specifically to Japan. PDF format. Click here to download. Basically, merchandising rights aren't spelled out in the law, but are a creation of private contracts over copyright, trademark, and "design law". ("Design law" is something found in a lot of legal codes but apparently not in the U.S.)
  25. Good enough. I hereby nominate Duke Togo as the official Macross World "Tiny Tim".
