  1. The VF-4 box art looks nice. Partial gerwalk doesn’t surprise me, since it seems HMR valks always appear as close to battroid as they can get, but designs like the VT-1 and VF-4 are so iconic in fighter that they leaned toward that mode for the art.

And isn't this the first HMR valk that doesn’t have a window in the box where you can see the actual toy inside? Maybe this one will be packed in fighter mode (makes sense to me) instead of battroid for a change.

  2. I really hope the 1S Roy is a TV version to go with the recent Hikaru 1J.

Assuming it’s likely they will issue the valk with no added parts, I think it’d be odd if they make it a DYRL version but not include strike parts. I know Arcadia did it once, but a movie Roy without strike parts just feels wrong.

Have you made any other customs?

    I have the same question.

Even without customs, he has enough pieces to put together some impressive armies.

Roy's TV 1S (which should include both Roy and Hikaru TV pilots, and the TV fast packs)

Now we’re talking. I can imagine this would sell like crazy. I’ve already put together my own (minus Roy pilot) but would love an official version. This and the Tomahawk are my top remaining HMR wishes.

The fact they've been teasing the Tomahawk for like 4 months and there's no pre-order to speak of kind of says it all.

4 months? I think it’s been more like 4 years.

When it comes to the HMR line, I don't even transform mine (maybe once out of the box, just to get it into the mode I want as its final "display piece") – but for some reason, knowing it can transform makes 'em that much better. It's kind of like knowing what's under the hood of a sports car even though you may only take it to its fullest speed a few times.

Thankfully, there are enough variants in the HMR line to where you can leave them static and still have an assortment of modes to look at.

Agreed. I’ll set one up the way I want and leave it on display for long periods of time, along with others in alternate modes. Then you can transform and change up the display after a while.

By pushing the VF-1S down the release order those folks are more likely to finally give in and buy whatever Bandai puts up at the time. Then they'll end up double dipping once that VF-1S comes out. The VF-1S is not a matter of if, but when. The question is will one-and-done crowd be able to wait or will they succumb early.

While I hope you're wrong, this makes complete sense. I think Bandai has been using this strategy for HMR for a while now, like for a certain Tomahawk. The VF-1S is the DX that I really want, though I'm hoping it's a TV version.

This came out of left field: Vixen 357.  While the translated version has been out there for a while now, it's cool to see it or get the royal treatment.

I had never heard of that game until now. Looks to me a little like Front Mission for Super Famicom, but minus the isometric view. I may have to check it out. Of course, the list of games I want to play (or replay) is now way longer than the amount of time I have to actually play them...

Ok. So Bandai have the rights on making Macross Delta Valkyries. And Bandai already made the VF-1J in DX form. What are the chances for these two to get made?

I think we’ll see those in HMR long before we see them in DX, especially since we’ve already seen HMR prototypes.

And I’m with @Lolicon — I want a TV Roy to be the next DX release.

Nice pilots.  Maybe when Bandai releases a DX VF-1S with a Roy pilot figure that it will be a unique sculpt and be larger than the Hikaru pilot figure.

This would be great, and I think pretty likely, given how much the 1J pilot seems to be sculpted like Hikaru, at least to my eyes.

  11. I think SD valks are cool, though I don’t own any at the moment. I used to have a set of the little Takatoku Paro Valkyries (though I believe they were Convertors KOs) which I sold off a few years ago before getting back into Macross. I’ve been tempted to get a Joke Machine but haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

  12. If there’s ever a piece that was meant to be bought and displayed in multiples, it’s the VF-1. I think @spanner‘s arrangement looks great. It makes me wonder (or wish) if there was a stand like the Tamashii Trident that some of us use for HMR that’d be large enough to handle 3 valks of DX size. Would a Yeti stand base work with 3 arms?

More importantly than yet another headline putting the Switch into something unrelated to the Switch...

    http://tinycartridge.com/post/181898402967/retro-bit-publishing-new-metal-storm-nes

New copies of Metal Storm, the best Nintendo gravity-flipping, escher-scrolling, lusciously-animated run&gun that you never played.

Given the insanel y stupid prices that Nintendo cartridges command these days, ESPECIALLY ones with the slightest hint of rarity to them, this is a breath of fresh air. Beats the hell out of two hundred bucks for a naked cart, which seems to be the going price for an original Metal Storm.

(I did NOT pay two hundred for my copy, as I got it before a bunch of trust-fund kids with more money than sense blew up the market. )

Very interesting. I almost went for their Holy Diver rerelease. I may want to grab Metal Storm and then unload my original copy. (They go for right around $100 on EBay.) Then again, depending on what they charge for the new version, I may not come out that much ahead. I don’t think they do a cart-only option, just boxed with extras.

But either way, it was a cool and innovative game.

Since that we're talking about the DX VF-1J recolour variants, how is Bandai going brighten the colours up on the eventual DX M&M versions from the HMR VF-1J releases and not cause any paint to rub off upon transformation.

I don’t think that Bandai is going to worry about Max and Milia colors being bright white. Given their bent towards gray in HMR, I’d expect any eventual DX versions to use the same light gray as the DX Hikaru.

Whoa, CRTs?! They still get used plenty with old-school 2D fighting game tournament because of the need to minimize input latency on screens and the fact old hardware lacks modern ports display ports. There are some very expensive mini-boards that translate analog to digital signals but they are still expensive.

Do you do speed runs and such?

No speed runs for me — I’m not that good. I just like the look of the older games on a CRT. You could say it’s how they were meant to be played. Perhaps a bit of nostalgia as well. And the issue of lag is real. I kept trying to play Mike Tyson’s Punch Out on my Retron 5 and kept failing on the harder opponents. CRT response is much better.

Some of the analog to digital converters aren’t too bad. The RetroTink is what I’d probably get if I wanted to go back to an LCD. Apparently zero lag and only $100. HD Retrovision also has a similar product in the works.

As some of the comments on the article state, I think this device has too many strikes against it by trying to look too much like a Switch (no d-pad, wide screen, etc).

While the portability is nice, consoles like this don’t hold much interest for me any more. I’ve kind of gotten to the point where I just want a truly authentic retro game experience: original hardware, CRT, etc. I hardly ever use my Retron 5 any more.
