Question about the Project Super Nova competition.
1/1 LowViz Lurker replied to Loner's topic in Movies and TV Series
I'm thinking they were about even, but the mental problems caused his plane to screw up because his hate made him lose focus when you are supposed to be calm, cool, and collected. Also aware of what the hell you are doing. When Guld is constantly worried about the girl, from the 7 years ago rape scene, he turns reckless like isamu. Remember it was isamu who the audience is led to believe is the dangerous one at first. And Guld is the in-control one. (because he is all cocky until something goes wrong in the first ova episode and he is forced to accept help from his enemy. This must have been really humiliating, whether you are a confident or not) Personally I think the yf21 just oozes more sophistication than the 19, but like others mentioned because of practical reasons, the 19 won out. Things like it being cheaper, more practical for the average joe to jump into, less risky. The brain system seemed a little dangerous to me thanks to those times when guld accidentally crashed the vf11 by merely thinking it. When questioned by that black guy about the control system, it seemed as if the reliability of the system was based half on the pilot's brain and half on the machine. Whose fault would it be if it released a bunch of missiles and killed friendly forces? Sounds a little dangerous to me..Especially if you've got zentradi who have the uncontrollable fighting urge and would probably get into fights amoungst themselves as much as the enemy, working for you. (Although I suppose like the clone soldier in star wars, they could prgram in obedience?) Now imagine if you acidentally killed your own guys because you got in a bad mood one day? I do think it would be a better design (having information go straight into your mind eliminating any delays and speed up your reaction speeds) and an average pilot in a yf21 would probably have a slight edge over an average pilot in 19, but people tend to go with what they know and the risks might factor into it. (ie the black guy's concerns about the control system glitch. Unless this was fixed, who knows how safe it would be in times where you are relying on the machine to save your life?) So they went with the "safe" choice. Remember that guld was doing pretty good in the OVA after he realised he had secured the girl's trust after the fire scene. So when his mind is relaxed I bet he can pilot better. I think Sharon Apple felt sorry for Guld and did that on purpose to balance the competition a bit. When guld is motivated by the girl to fight to protect her like a knight, I think he is more determined and calm as he mentiond this gives him a purpose. Kinda cheesy, but romantic don't you think? They also had a similar idea in Gundam Wing where the unmanned "Mobile Dolls" were faster not just in reaction speed, but because they had no pilot inside them, they could do all kinds of manuevers that would normally kill a pilot if there was no limit. Early one of the aces which just dodges fire, says the others survived because they were mobile dolls and this helped them survive. Which is why all the interest in making pilotless mobile suits and why that dude with the fencing skills is so against them because he is old school and hates the fact there is no skill left in the fighting anymore for true soldiers who pride themselves on thier achievment in combat and honour a skilled adversary to fight against. There would only be hollow, meaningless, victory for pure fighters, if all a victory ever came down to was just wealth and whichever side could afford more robots to win a battle. ie no war heroes to inspire little children, nothing to brag about to friends, no respect or apreciation for skilled pilots ready to die for others etc Basically the victorious side would be shamed as cowardly with no fighting determined by human skill anymore.) -
I think I read somewhere on ign that metroid was originally inspired by alien. Maybe just the look of it and the theme of the alien. No different to how something like the metal gear character was inspired by the character in escape from new york. (snake plisskin) Or how in a game like contra: if you look closely at the look of the two main soldiers they are Arnold Schwarzeneggar and Stallone look-a-likes. Little things like that.

As I pointed out the invid were using the humans as spies. There would be no reason to keep them alive with the threat of a future resistance later on down. Eventually the humans would multiply and compete with the invid for land if left allowed to be too free. I doubt if humans were alllowed to live as they would and someday create a military and develop weapons in secret (like in Gundam) the invid would leave them alone. So basically the aliens were probably keeping the gangs in control and used the gangs as informants. Possibly the aliens were appealing to the humans greed and corrupting them to help destroy the resistance rather than wasting them there and then. It was beneficial to keep some alive as opposed to wiping out the ones they know about and having some go under the radar. I doubt it was out of kindness that they were allowed to live. Either way you look at it: it doesn't matter the WHY the bad guys were doing what they did, what matters is that in real life if you are the one to die, and you are trying to complete the mission, you got to make the decision to pull that trigger because it is either you or them. There is a greater things at stake since your mission is to take back the earth and are the last hope for future generations. If it was a choice between my family and someone else family I would be biased to my own. Of course for a show they want to keep it optimistic so they put in the sob story to make the story interesting and more complicated (this formula was repeated a bit too much though imo) but it could still be as good if we didn't have to sympathises with them and the hero was just selfish. Not all soldier are going to be perfect especially if the government left you for dead and the only reward to you is that feeling of revenge of taking down the enemy that killed your GF. In fact one of the themes of mad max (not road warrior but the the original one where he was still a cop) was that the hero was just an ordinary guy with skills. He never started out as the anti-hero at all, but then he realised the system didn't work and even the gangs had protection that made his job of catching them a joke. (becuase they would just be let out again to come back and get revenge, killing the cop responsible and continuing to rape and kill and steal) IT was only AFTER the gangs had destroyed his life (killing his wife, kids and brutally torching his friend in some kind of sick ritual) that he turned "Selfish" antihero. So even the selfish guy is worth sympathising with. Many people who didn't see the original mad max probably would have missed this part of his character and skipped to the bit where he is just a crazy guy in The Road Warrior. (maybe because the original mad max had a limited release?) But it was the loss of his family and the crumbling justice system that drove him to become crazy. (in the end where he cuffs that gang member to the car and tell hims he can either cut his foot off to escape the explosion or cut off the cuff but not make it in time and die, is a sweet ending.) Before that he was the guy with the driving skill doing his job like stick was just a soldier trying to complete the mission. -

You know, if they ever made a mospeada movie reimagining the series or something I wouldn't mind seeing that morbid stuff. They have themes of chaos in a post apocalypic world in movies like mad max where the only good guy has actually gone a bit mad, and everyone else has turned savage and pretty much lawless and immoral. (note in the second movie where the girl gets raped by the bikers. I can totally imagine something like that happening in the mospeada world with those bikers. This is the kind of behaviour that happens in people when there are no laws and no fear of getting caught by anyone tough enough to stand up and do something about it) In the towns, the people were obviously being used as spies for the invid/inbit to help them catch any resistance and report it to them, so I can totally see the main guy not caring about others of his own race when they are just as likely to screw up the mission as any alien would. The people who helped the inbit would probably be given all sorts of rewards and corruption would be rampant. There would be people starving in the streets, backstabbing, soldiers who defected due to loss of hope in winning against them etc.. For example I can definately see cannibals as being normal behaviour for the poor, and maybe diseased people lying there left to die with no help. The aliens wouldn't care. -
Hahah somedumbguy that brings back memories. You know, I really cringed in final fantasy 7 when they force you to dress up as a chic and you almost get raped by a bunch of fags in the game. Damn you squaresoft. That wasn't funny, WTF is wrong with you!!? You raped my childhood. Well ok I was an innocent little 3 yr old, but you get the point - stop making sissy skinny pretty boys take the role of the tough warrior and then make them dress up in drag to attract the female audience. His normal leather BDSM outfit is bad enough. But throughout the whole game who didn't feel like they were actually controlling a gay character who has no interest in the girls in the game and doesn't once act like he gives a crap about them? And then when Aeris died....nothing. I didn't shed a tear. Wasn't dramatic at all. No emotional depth to the characters in the game at all. Just emotionless, expressionless, robot puppets. At least in macross the love triangle was complex. You actually gave a crap about the characters and felt sympathetic.

I've only seen the rowboat-ECK! version and it made me depressed when toys weren't available. The first itme I saw that bike I thought "OMG! I want one!" Also like someone mentioned its weakness was that each character could not die. But all too often, towards the end of each episode a newly introduced character would always die as some kind of selfless sacrifice, and this idea got old after a while. (in a predictable way where you just know this guy is going to die because so much of the episoide focuses on him only, instead of having an episode continue developing on multiple characters at once.) I prefer the "multiple characters at once" rather than the "lets focus on 1 character and then kill this guy towards the end" style of storytelling, which is why I still like macross a little bit more. This way, you get to see smal bits and pieces of each character over long time, like a soap opera and your feelings and impression of that character gradually change over time and evolve as the story progresses like you are there with them. When kakizaki and roy do die, it has that much more of an impact because you have been "with them" from the start. And when Hikaru almost dies and comes close to death in some episodes you know that it is that much serious and in a sense, realistic that the enemy is a big threat. This feeling keeps you glued to your seat and is much more gripping when a major event happens in the story that is life-altering to one of the characters. I didn't get that same feeling as much with Mospeada/NG. -
If the gunpod runs out of ammo, just grab a dead zentradi soldier's weapon and use that with the manipulator. Just like in Halo. In fact this is what the zentradi did in later eps: they had giants holding the gunpod like a machine gun and using it against humans. Remember in the first ep when hikaru ran out of ammo after wasting it all on the regult? Then the giant came out, and Roy finished it off with a few shots in the back? I think maybe the gunpod has a burst mode or single shot mode to save ammo. But when fighting against fast moving mecha you can the set it to fire rapid shots and because the enemies are bigger than the battroid you have a pretty good chance of taking them down with minium fuss. (ie max fighting milia inside sdf1 while the Qrau was having trouble moving through all the buildings. Even a fast moving mecha would be useless if its body can barely fit into the environment and/or there is lack of space to strafe and dodge - perhaps the zentradi were too used to fighting in space and this gave human an edge on ground? In early eps we see battroids using the buildings as cover) I think in later episodes I remember seeing the gunpod fire beams. Was this a mistake or were the humans finally catching up to the aliens by studying and reverse engineering thier technology from downed enemy mecha? MAybe the reverse also happened but we didn't get to see it on tv: the zentradi had micronised spies who would steal information on the gunpod and then try to develop new armor of some sort to enhance thier mecha and soldier's armor resistance to the gunpod? I think in DYRL the use of shields must be pretty silly if the thing doesn't offer some kind of protection from fire. But you see them carrying these huge tower shields to cover thier bodies in the scene when they get scared of the minmay doll.

New game law in California........
1/1 LowViz Lurker replied to MGREXX's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Games shouldn't be treated any differently to books, movies, music or other literature. No need for new laws and restrictions. The creators should have the right to freedom of expression. Responsibility should rest on the parents of the child. Even if the parent is not at fault for what thier child does, they are still responsible for that child. The government will not raise them for you. The parents should be aware of what it was like when they were a rebellious teenager going behind thier parents backs to sneak around with thier friends when they thought they werent watching. The criminals who murder and kill look for a scapegoat once they get caught and then try to trick the public into believing the game made them do whatever crime they commited. When it works they are laughing thier asses off at how easy it is to convince people they are innocent of any wrong-doing. Please don't help criminals like that get off easy by making excuses for them. And parents who sue the companies who had nothing to do with what these individuals do, money is not going to bring your child back. If anything the more the media blows the violence in games out of proportion, (which has no effect on what you do in reality, it is just a game) the more notoriety the criminal gets. They probably read the papers and see that thier acts are getting the attention, and purposely choose to do whatever they can to get in the paper - They are probably thinking, "hey if I blame this videogame I can get off easier and still continue to commit these murders". Getting the attention is probably thier reward. Remember another thing: even if kids can't get the games by purchasing them, they can still access that game through an adult who will buy it for them,... or from an adult who has kids and will have access to his dad's games. These restrictions won't actually achieve anything in stopping children seeing the violent images. All it will do is make it so that the parent who is not at home 24/7 to watch thier kid, have thier kid be more sneaky about playing the restricted game. The fact that it is forbidden from them by thier parents, makes it all the more enticing. This is how children think. "If I can't have it, it must be something good I am missing out on." Maybe not all kids would think this way but you must keep this in mind if you have a child who you know you can't trust 100% based on thier past history. I swear if you disipline them when they are young, they will grow up in adulthood to thank you for giving them whatever guidance and passing whatever values on to them to help them in future. Like what someon else mentioned kids will mimmick your behaviour, so set a good example. When they grow up and forced to face the real world that's when you can relax your rules. Kids will always be ahead of thier adult parents where knowledge of a certain game or technology is involved. If a teen is determined enough to get access to a violent game that his parent doesn't want him to see, they will eventually find a way. It's not a case of whether restrictions and stuff is a good idea (I must admit it sounds good on paper), but whether it will actually work in practice. (this is where I am skeptical. I know as a child my own parents let me watch violent movies, and I have grown up without any criminal history - each child and each parent is unique in how they want to raise thier kids) So, no, I don't think anything will change, just that these restrictions will just make the creators of these violent games, more scared to keep making them due to the belief that they could probably make more if they made a censored version of thier violent game. (as opposed to one which isn't censored and only appeals to the smaller market) So like what happened with Aliens vs Predator movie, you might see some last minute butchering of the original to suit as wide an audience as possible to allow the little 13 year old kids to see the movie. This can destroy my enjoyment of the product imo (I'm against censorship) because like what another guy mentioned there are many good games that also happen to be violent. (but they do not rely on the violence to be enjoyable) They are not trying to be juvenile but in fact just trying to be realistic in how damage to a human body should look, based on the kind of weapons in the game. (example seeing a burning body after using a flame thrower on a person, or having a limb seperate from a grenade explosion which in real life would happen etc) Sure that is not necessary but the detail can immerse you into the game more when you see the effects of the weapon. -
I'm just grateful there are macross toys being made. I hope the quality improves and stays high though. I'm willing to pay roughly a 1/48 price for this. It would seem pretty fair from my point of view just so long as the price is consistant with other toys they've done. I thought the Qrau price was pretty high but got one anyway. I'm hoping that if something doesn't sell because it is out of the price range of many, that prices will slowly be put down to get to the sweet spot where everyone who wants one, manages to be able to get it. But at first they try to set it as high as they can to milk the early adopter of as much money they can. I think if they spread the releases far apart, most people will just be able to scrape up the cash if they really want it. As long as the quality doesn't drop to toynami level I'll be happy. Like what has already been said, when there is no competition they set the prices to whatever people will pay as opposed to whatever people think is a fair price. That's just greed and all businesses would do it if they have a monopoly.

So when it say the graphics are not perfect for macross plus I can assume it is pretty much 100% perfect then? An example of screwed up sound: In macross when the music starts just when you start the first level of the game, whenever I start to fire it cuts the music out. The music then returns. Little glitches like that.

I have some questions: Is the guy who did Ben/Kakizaki's voice in robotech the same guy who did Guld in macross plus? I've heard that guy in lots of anime I've watched. Ghost in the shell SAC, Ninja Scroll, Macross Plus, argh can't escape thinking Guld Bowman is being reincarnated as different people. I even saw this H anime once where the guy who does Yugioh plays the character. It's really funny thinking that yugioh would do something like that in his spare time. haha I think they need to get some totally new people and experiment. It's very distracting. Whoever did kamjin/khyron in robotech I think they should just use him again and maybe get the guy who did Guld in macross plus to do Britai this time. The guy with the british accent (is he even british?) sound great for khyron/kamjin. I can't imagine another person as him. It's hard to erase the memory you have of the character you first heard the voice from when the same voice is used for new characters. Like when I saw macross plus dub, I kept thinking why is Roy trapped inside Yang Neuman's body?

The sounds seems to be ok now. Using mame v.101 But I get the message: "The sound emulation isn't 100% working." So what do I do to get this working 100%. Would mame 32 be better? Does this message come up still with that?
-
I'm using mame v.100 and the sounds are not 100% working. You guys sure sound is 100% perfect? They screw up when you fire weapons and it sure as hell ain't what it is supposed to sound like in the arcades. Maybe I should try the latest mame 32? Edit: looks like v.101 is released. Might try this.

ah, so that's why yamato had made those 3 super Limited Edition black vf1s. Did anyone here manage to win those btw? They were probably destroyed in the rain of death and all the top secret info about them is missing. They went to space for testing and were secretly transported down to earth. Gamlin's grandpa may have worked on these in a secret underground base with the help of captured alien survivors inside ASS1 but the information was hidden in case AntiUN stole the stealth technology. Or they could be a custom valk similar to basara red vf19, or mylenes pink valk with boobs. Or perhaps these were spies sent from UN earth government to check on global and misa to keep them in line. Misa's dad must have watchers on board the sdf1 to check on his daughter from time to time. (like milia with mylene in macross 7) -
Capcom Classics Collection
1/1 LowViz Lurker replied to gerwalk25's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I still have callus 95. I remember running final fight and street fighter at fullspeed on a proper 6 button joystick on a pentium 75. Great emulator. All of the CPS 1 and 2 classics need to be ported to a portable game system imo. (legally and officially of course) They would make perfect portable game entertainment. I want to play AvP, punisher, cadillacs and dinosaurs, dungeouns and dragons tower of doom, King of dragons, Strider 1 and 2(arcade versions), dungeouns and dragon: SOM, warriors of fate, un squadron, ghouls n ghosts, mercs, commando, final fight etc The list goes on and on.. To me that was the golden age of 2d action games. Of course when sega left 2d (that is we stopped seeing shinobi or wonderboy style games) that is when I felt a sense of sadness. The home console 2d games sometimes didn't retain the feel and gameplay balance of thier arcade originals, despite having more features or extras. Because of thier ease of play (learning curve is not steep) but high skill requirements (the old school gamers like me who could beat these arcade titles in 1 credit with no contines on thier hardest settings while showing off in front of a crowd) these would make great portable game system games to play for short periods of time on a bus or train. -
We should have a poll on hands: 1. fixed pose removable 2. poseable (the fingers and wrist have to be stiff enough to grip and support the weight and stress of gunpod) 3. Non-removable old school "donut" hands with a big ass hole in them and no articulation.
-
If they were to actually go ahead with it, mmmmm...Jetfire as his old school vf1 self. This could be customised and depending on price of it and quality of it, could compete with the macross toys for attention.

My 1/48 VF-1A brownie came without a heatshield!
1/1 LowViz Lurker replied to Sephiroth's topic in Toys
That would be a very sad day. Sales would drop, prices on ebay would go down to 1/3 the price new, and people would be forced to send back thiers in exchange for another one that is in the exact same (almost ready to crack) condition as the one they were complaining about. -
It's not finished yet so maybe they will include that feature. All I know is I will be getting one. I wonder if the hand will be super posable hands or fixed posed where you can remove them? I want the wrists ball jointed with articulated fingers.

Ah..if only we could see those transform into giant robots.. Bring on the transformers binaltech jets..

The ASS1 did not hit earth in 1999 but what did happen was: Aug 11 10-59 http://www.hermit.org/Eclipse1999/ (august 11 1999) Kawamori was onto something. The aliens love the number 11.(maybe they are into numerology?) Which is why on 911 in DYRL you had the aliens making peace. The mayan calendar ends on 2012 and in SDF:macross that is where the book closes in the tv series.. More on mayan prophecies.. http://www.knowledge.co.uk/xxx/cat/mayan/ You are all doomed. You should have spent all your tax dollars on making a SDF1 in the event earth gets destroyed by a hostile alien race. At least in yamato the people had underground cities..
