Well, to each his own, but I'm not sure that I know many (if any) who'd agree with you. A great game, a Game of the Year, sure (albeit not my choice), but not an entire console generation.- 6894 replies

The ships do look fantastic, and the magazine seems quality. But, like David says, they've got crap in there like the Krenim Temporal Warship, the Maquis fighter, the Bajoran Solar Sailer, and the Nausicaan fighter, but they don't have the TV-version pre-refit Enterprise or the Ambassador-class (Nebula is in there, David, issue 23). I also wish they were in scale. Yes, I know that means a tiny Defiant and a huge Romulan Warbird, but dammit, I like my ships in scale! But I guess the biggest reason I'm not subscribing is the price. I have to buy a lot of ships I don't want (non-Federation) to get the ones I do want (Federation), at a rate of $40 a month. I think I'd rather check my local hobby shop or wherever and see if they've got the individual models.

I wouldn't mind the gold Autobot insignia, if they weren't mismatched. Otherwise, the gold is just awful. It's kind of a shame, though. I actually kinda dig the red crotch lights, blue energon axe, and blue abdomen. It'd almost make a good Pepsi Convoy...- 17161 replies

You're kidding, right? I mean, I get that it's a contender for Game of the Year (although I still think that's Bioshock Infinite), but of the whole generation? An admittedly compelling story stuck in a mediocre zombie game defined an entire console generation better than Mass Effect's sweeping space opera, or Rock Band's redefining party game, or meme-generator Portal's take on puzzle games? One of my zombie-loving friends bought a PS3 just for TLoU, and even he wouldn't call it game of this generation.- 6894 replies

I did the best for Black Friday! I had a nice dinner with family, then I slept in until 9:00! Plus, if the Steam Autumn Sale is anything like the Summer Sale, I'll buy more games than I'll actually play for under $50. So far, though, I've spent $7 and got Evoland and Papers, Please.- 6894 replies

Uh... the PS4 has a power and eject button. Out of curiosity, the PS4 still uses Bluetooth, right? Doesn't the PS3 Blu-ray remote work on the PS4?

This part can't be emphasized enough. People seem to be upset that multiplayer (which I'm not a fan of) costs money on the PS4, while it doesn't on the PS3 or Vita. What people aren't really focusing on is that PS+ has been available on the PS3 and Vita, and that people were subscribing even without it being required for multiplayer. The fact is, PS+ is a good deal. It's $49.99/year (less if Sony is running a special, or you can find the subscription cards on sale). You get free games, which change out regularly and can be kept for as long as you're a PS+ subscriber, an idea Microsoft recently copied for Xbox Live Gold. Unlike Microsoft, who's been criticized for offering older games like Crackdown, or crappy XBLA titles like that Keflings game, good games come up on PS+. Over the last year, I've grabbed stuff like Sleeping Dogs (my 2012 Game of the Year), Super Street Fighter IV, InFAMOUS 2, Jet Set Radio, and Kingdoms of Amalur, to name of a few. Plus, if you have a Vita or PS4, they get free games too. Not sure if they're still available, but I know that at least for awhile Uncharted, Wipeout 2048, and Gravity Rush were available, and that's like 3 of the 4 best Vita games right there. Likewise, Resogun is probably the best PS4 exclusive right now, and it's free for PS+ members. Additionally, PS+ members get discounts on a lot of games in the PSN Store. I picked up Fatal Frame and Fatal Frame II during a Halloween sale for $2 each.

Whirl looks like the G1 toy, which is alright, I guess. Thing is, IDW's psychotic take on the character has turned him from duller than dirt to a fan favorite. So, and it's really rare that you'll hear me say this, I was actually hoping for less G1...- 17161 replies

Not a problem. Yes. But, and I say this as someone who used to work in the computer repair business, laptops tend to take a lot of abuse. The single most common reason people brought laptops to me, even more so than viruses, was hard drive failure. Complicating matters further, a bad hard drive might only show occasional signs of trouble, or fail a SMART test, but otherwise seem ok. For those reasons, I do recommend buying a new one. They're not even particularly expensive anymore. I found this WD 500GB on Amazon for a little over $50. No. It's been several years since I made mine, but I'm pretty sure you can create a PSN ID with just your name, email, and the handle you want to use. I'm also pretty sure you can buy PSN cards and PS+ cards, so you don't have to have a credit card on file with them. I could be wrong, though. I suppose that's understandable. For what it's worth, though, I didn't experience any unusual activity on my PSN account, my credit card, or any other accounts. For me, it was a password change, a mild inconvenience, and some free games. Plus, while no system is foolproof, you have to figure that a debacle like that would have pressured them to beef up their security.- 6894 replies

It's really not that difficult. IIRC, you'll need an external hard drive or a really big flash drive, and I think it needs to be formatted as FAT 32. I can walk you through formatting, if you need help. Once that's done the drive is connected to the PS3, there should be an option in the Settings section of the XMB for making a backup. It's been awhile, but it should be something like System Settings - Backup Utility. The backup may take awhile. Patches for you game data and PS3 games downloaded from the PSN should copy, as well as most of your save files. PSone and PS2 games and game saves won't be copied, though (but the games can be re-downloaded from your PSN account). When the backup is done, on the left edge of the PS3 you'll find a rectangular panel. Pop it off reveal a single screw. Removing the screw will let you remove the drive cage. Again, IIRC, there's no other fasteners, and you can simply grasp the drive and pull it out. In fact, there should be a sort of wire handle for doing so. As you do so, note whether it's label-side up or down, take note of location and placement of the connectors, and note the orientation in the cage, to ensure that you line up the new drive correctly. There will be a pair of screws on each side of the cage. Remove them to take the drive out of the cage, put the new drive in the cage, then screw it in. In theory, pretty much any 2.5" SATA drive should work. That's the size used in laptops. Of practical note is that the PS3 was designed to work with 5400rpm drives... that's actually good for you! 5400rpm drives are more common in that size; 7200rpm drives are considered high-performance, and will run you a premium anyway... just make sure not to buy anything slower than 5400. I usually buy Western Digital drives myself, but brand is really six of one and half a dozen of the other. I tend to buy computer parts at Newegg, but Amazon should have them too. Your local Best Buy should have them too, for that matter. Once the drive is in the cage, it's just a matter of slotting it back in, putting the screw back, and closing the panel. Once you've done all that, hook the PS3 back up and turn it on. It'll ask you if you want to format the new drive (you do). After the new drive is formatted, it's simply a matter of signing back into PSN and restoring your backup from the external drive. You can restore it from the same System Settings - Backup Utility in the Settings option on the XMB. It's honestly very easy. PS3 SLIM EDIT: If you have a Slim (no idea if this applies to a Super Slim, though, as I've never had one), the process is almost exactly the same. The only difference is that the drive isn't located on the left side. Instead, on bottom of the PS3 you'll see a much smaller panel. Under it is a screw; remove it. Now, on the front of the console, under the Blu-ray drive, in a second panel. Slide it to the right to remove it to reveal the drive cage.- 6894 replies

While this may be the case, I maintain that anyone who can operate a screwdriver is capable of replacing the hard drive in a PS3. And that's just to open the compartment. Actually removing and putting in a new hard drive is as easy as plugging a USB drive into a USB port. The hard part is making and restoring a backup.- 6894 replies

Yes. You could always make a backup of the hard drive, then replace it with a bigger one and restore from the backup. You can probably find a 500GB for between $50-$70, and they're not difficult to install.- 6894 replies

I'd say it's more accurate to say that the fighting system in Sleeping Dogs is very similar to Arkham Asylum. But either way, it's a good thing, as I'm a huge fan of both the Arkham games and Sleeping Dogs.- 6894 replies

You did better than I did. I finished the intro, got to the first big city, did the first assassination, and decided I'd had enough. My experience with it was such that I never bothered with the sequels, even though I had a friend who swore up and down that AC II was the best game he'd ever played, and that I should play it even though I didn't like the first one.- 6894 replies

Too bad I'm not in New York. All I can say is that they're definitely sold out around my area. Too bad. I know I said I don't care about the new consoles because I'm a PC gamer first and foremost, and that Forza 5 isn't a system-seller, but I'm what can I say? I gots the gadget lust. I'd buy either if I if I could find them at this point, and yeah, if I bought an Xbone I'd buy Forza 5 to go with it.- 6894 replies

You can say that the PS4 is more popular because it sold 1 million in 24 hours in just two countries while the Xbone needed 13, but sold out is sold out. As for your new 3DS, you're in for a treat. I've been playing A Link Between Worlds, and I just got the Master Sword (I don't think that needs a spoiler tag). It's hands down the best Zelda game since A Link to the Past. Easily better than all of the 3D Zeldas, the Capcom ones, and the DS ones.- 6894 replies

That's odd. I went to the Target near my house, and I told the clerk I wanted Super Mario 3D World and the new Zelda. He opened the display cases, took them out, and that was the end of it, like it wasn't even a big deal.- 6894 replies

While the technophile in me will surely keep an eye out for a PS4 or Xbone, my local stores are still sold out of both. I did pick up Super Mario 3D World, though, so at least until I beat it Nintendo wins the console war. Actually, it's kind of funny. Since the only other game I bought for the Wii U was New Super Mario Bros. U, and it was around the holidays that I bought and played it, playing a game on the Wii U gives me a real holiday vibe.- 6894 replies

In a discussion completely unrelated to recent toys, I've got a question, and maybe the truck guys in the audience can help me out. Since RotF Leader Optimus was brought up, I got mine out and started playing with him. In bot mode, it's just a little taller than MP-10. So I transform both of them, and set them side by side. I'm looking at the lines where the doors should be, the side view mirrors (or the protrusions of plastic that are supposed to evoke the idea of mirrors on Leader Prime), and the size of the tires. It looked to me as if, were MP-10 and Leader Prime's alt modes actually in the same scale, that RotF Leader Prime should be smaller. So I grab MP-10's trailer, and prop it up on Leader Prime's 5th wheel. Yep, the trailer looks too small. From movie stills, the trailer should be a bit taller, a little longer, and ever so slightly wider. Thing is, I kind of sort of remember, WAAAY back when the first movie was coming out and everyone was complaining that Optimus wasn't a cab over engine style truck, that Michael Bay said something about picking the truck he did because, had he used a cab over engine truck, the resulting bot mode would have been too small. Yet, if I'm right in thinking that Leader Prime should be smaller to be in scale with MP-10, then the resulting decrease would take a robot that's a shade taller than MP-10 and make him a shade shorter than MP-10. In other words, you get the bigger bot from the cab over engine truck than the conventional. And yes, before anyone says anything, I do get that the way each toy transforms has a lot to do with the size of the bot modes, ex. the way MP-10's legs contract when transforming vs. the way Leader Prime's legs fold fold out and double in length in truck mode. But please, someone tell me I'm not crazy, and that Leader Prime really should be a little smaller to be in scale with MP-10.- 17161 replies
