  1. Yeah, I'd heard that you could get the sub cards on sale from a lot of places, but I guess I never bothered because I had it set to auto renew.
  2. Huh. I quit Xbox Live gold. The jump from $50 to $60 kinda irked me, and I never used it for multiplayer or Netflix, so I couldn't see the value in it. So now they're giving away free games? That's definitely some good value, then, but not really enough to make me go back to gold a little over a month before the Xbone comes out.
  3. I like G Gundam, too. I'm apparently one of the few people who liked Gundam X. Start with a red, white, and blue robot with a samurai-inspired face, and my natural inclination is to like it. It's just my nature. And honestly, while it's nowhere near my favorite, so far I like AGE. Granted, it could totally fall apart on me and tank big time in the second half, but 20-ish episodes in and my biggest gripes are the year gap between the episode where Asemu and Zeheart become friends and the the next episode, where they're graduating high school, and the fact that they had to go turn Zeheart into the mask-wearing Char wannabe cliche. So, so far anyway, it's nowhere near as bad as the SEED shows, which were just atrocious on pretty much every level.
  4. The main thing that's always held me back from picking up a hybrid style Optimus is the size. He's just too little to be in scale with any of my other Transformers.
  5. Convenient! I remember when I had to work to get subtitled anime... Ok, seriously, what's with all the AGE hate? Granted, I've only seen the first arc, but it was miles better than SEED, SEED Destiny, or 00.
  6. Ah, I broke down and bought Pokemon Y, as I'm sure Nintendo expected I would the minute they announced the awesome-sauce Mega Charizard X is the the game with the legendary deer instead of Yveltal, the awesome dark bird thingy. I think this kind of works out, anyway. X/Y have the best starters since first gen (which is to say, I hate the 2nd gen starters, think Torchic is ok out of the Gen 3s, think the Gen 4s are decent, and loath all of the Gen 5s). I was thinking Froakie because I want Charmander for Mega Charizard X, but I also kind of wanted Fennekin. This way, I can do Fennekin and... I dunno, probably Squirtle in Y, and still get Yveltal in Y. Down the road, I can borrow my dad's 3DS, trade some of the awesome Pokemon from one to the other, then keep that one as my long-term save and replay the game on the other cart whenever I get an urge.
  7. That's basically my plan, except I won't actually pick it up until later today, on my way to my dad's to watch the Penguins/Lightning game, and I won't start playing it until I finish replaying Platinum (I already finished Fire Red, SoulSilver, and Emerald, and White/Black 2 are still too recent for me to want to replay). Could be awhile; I'm only three badges in on Platinum.
  8. My local TRU never clearanced him. I know, because I wasn't paying $75 for him, but I figured if I saw him for $50 or less I'd bite.
  9. Hmm... I've got mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, Square-Enix's games tend to be pricey, and the Android versions are usually half-arsed ports of the iOS versions. On the other hand, Dragon Quest 3 is one of my all-time favorite JRPGs.
  10. Too bad I'm not a member... and the only one even remotely close is in a really bad neighborhood. I'll wait and see if he turns up anywhere else. He is supposed to be a regular retail release, right?
  11. Bull. I can most certainly call it both over-hyped and mediocre. Things can have an impact and still be mediocre, over-hyped, or even bad. Cases in point, Justin Beiber, Lady Gaga. I'm not arguing that the game made a huge impact; it's often credited as the reason the original PlayStation beat the N64. I'm not denying it's influence; you can hardly play a JRPG anymore that doesn't have a convoluted plot centered around an androgynous dude with spiky hair and a giant sword. What I am saying is that, despite its significance, it's not very good. It's not horrible, either. Just mediocre. You do make a good point about 2. 2 was bad. 3 was great, though. 4 was the best in the series. You say 7 was the last one that felt like a Final Fantasy for you, but for me it was 6. 6 had a sort of generic story that was fantastically told through the huge cast of characters, many of which were shuffled in an out of the party, which helped you play them all. But using Magicite to teach party members spells was the beginning of the end of the class/job system. By FF7, there weren't enough mechanical differences between the characters for me to care which I was using... I played 90% of FF7 with Cloud, Tifa, and Red XII, 90% of FF8 with Squall, Rinoa, and Selphie, etc. This is absolute truth.
  12. Influential on how video games in general look and feel now? Highly debatable; the blocky polygonal look had been done before (Virtua Fighter 2, Jumping Flash), and Zelda especially is much too colorful by modern standards. Influential on their respective franchises, no doubt. But I'm not saying that's a good thing. I'd already stated that I felt that OoT killed some of the magic of the original and ALttP. I've played Zelda games since then, and I've enjoyed them, but I've preferred Link's Awakening and the Oracle games to anything Nintendo's done with Zelda in 3D. As for Final Fantasy, the only reason I can't say definitively that VII was my least favorite in the series is because I played XIII. Again, I can't deny that Final Fantasy VII was hugely influential on the series after that, but in my book that really wasn't a good thing. Indecipherable plots, minimal mechanical difference between characters such that I wound up using the same three for the majority of the game... I couldn't even bring myself to finish XII or XIII. Put more succinctly, influential isn't the same as good. For clarity's (and Archer's) sake, though, I will stress again that I am of the opinion that OoT is a good game. Just not "best game EVARRR!!1!!1!!" or whatever. For extra clarity's sake, I am saying Final Fantasy VII was mediocre at best.
  13. Yeah... I was six. I wasn't thinking about it that hard. All I knew was that I'd just watched the bot I looked to as a father figure (my actual dad worked second shift, so I never saw him except on weekends) had just died in front of me. I was pretty traumatized.
  14. It's not. Don't get me wrong, it's fun game, and the 3DS version addresses some of the issues the N64 version had. But even when it was brand new I felt like it was missing some of the magic that made the original and Link to the Past so great. But in my opinion, Ocarina of Time and Final Fantasy VII are the two most over-rated games in gaming history.
  15. I don't know. I was shocked when Prowl and Ironhide died, but I cried when Optimus died. Dad thought he was going to have to take me out of the theater.
  16. Civ V was my first entry into the series, so I can't comment on previous games. All I can say is that I have more hours logged into Civ V than double the next closest game. I hope Civ VI has some kind of classic mode to appease the old fans, but I personally like Civ V just fine the way it is.
  17. I wouldn't rule out a US Starscream based on the newer mold, but Prime and Grimlock are done. I don't see Hasbro doing them again any time soon. Actually, Prowl's probably next for the US releases. Prior to Prowl, every MP mold has made it to the States except for two: Megatron and Sideswipe. Megatron can make it because of US regulations on toys that look like guns, and Sideswipe didn't make it because of the Volkswagen Group's attitude about using their IP for "violent" toys. Prowl's not violating any regulations, and I'm not aware of Nissan having any such hangups, so there you go. Not paying a huge markup to import a foreign version of a toy that's available in local stores is going out of my way? In all seriousness, I own exactly two Takara figures: MP Megatron and TF Prime Silas Breakdown. Silas Breakdown wasn't too crazy of a price, and while I think he's a fine toy in and of himself, there's nothing about him that really makes me think he's special compared to any of the other Prime toys I have (issues I have with the Prime line have less to do with QC and more to do with crappy molds in the first place). As for Megatron, I think you mentioned something about sloppy, loose figures that flop around if you shake them? This. And it's been this way for pretty much every MP toy that's been released. After a couple of days, threads will start to turn up on Transformers boards documenting every flaw. Are Hasbro's toys perfect? Of course they're not. I've freely admitted that it would have been nice if my US MP-10's feet were a little tighter. I'll go one further and say that, although I've had no troubles posing him, his hips could probably be a little tighter too. But my Soundwave doesn't flop at all. He's the opposite; he's so tight that I have trouble posing his hips. I wish his eyes would have been red like the Takara version's, but not so much that I believe I'd have been better off importing it instead of getting the Hasbro one. Bottom line, I've got nothing against those who'd rather have the Takara versions. Not having imported a Takara MP since Megatron, I might even be willing to concede a slight difference quality. But for the most part, I view the "Takara is superior" crowd the same way I view the Apple crowd: their belief in their brand's superiority doesn't equate to actual superiority. Or in the case of Takara vs. Hasbro, not enough of a difference that I'm willing to spend double on it.
  18. 1TB should be plenty for a system that's supposed to be more console than PC. I have a 1TB hard drive in my main gaming rig just for Steam. I have 57 games installed, and I'm using less than half of the drive. Even if you take up some more space for the OS, since I boot Windows off of a 128GB SSD, you'd still have plenty of room for 80-100 installed games.
  19. Pokemon has never been a particularly plot-heavy game. Red/Green/Blue/Fire Red/Leaf Green were pretty much, "Hey, you have a Pokemon, so you should take the League challenge." Team Rocket was thrown in to cause a little mischief, padding out the game so that it wasn't as simple as wandering from town to town challenging gyms. And Team Rocket's motivation was never more than money-grubbing generic baddies. They haven't evolved much since, but they have improved a bit. For instance, in Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, there were two bad guy teams, Aqua and Magma. In Ruby you fight Magma, in Sapphire you fight Aqua, but in Emerald you fight both. Their deal was a bit more complicated. Team Aqua loves the ocean and believed in protecting sea life, Team Magma thinks that creating new landmass will give people and land animals more room. Each is after a legendary Pokemon that can help them achieve their goals, but they can't control them. The two Pokemon, when awakened, start fighting, which starts affecting the weather. The player winds up seeking a third Pokemon who legend says was responsible for separating them in the first place to stop them. Or, in Black/White, you encounter Team Plasma, an Pokemon-rights group that questions the morality of catching Pokemon in balls and forcing them to fight each other. TL:DR - Pokemon X and Y will most likely have an extremely minimal story, but it'll be enough to keep the game moving.
  20. Are you just assuming Soundwave is just as bad, or did you actually have problems with him? After getting Soundwave, I can admit that Prime's a bit looser, but not so much that I've had any problems posing him. But my Hasbro Soundwave is so tight I'm almost afraid of breaking him when I move his legs.
  21. Kotaku's been hyping for quite awhile, saying it's really the first game since Gen 1 to really recapture the magic. I'm definitely looking forward to it. I've even been replaying the old ones in anticipation (finished Fire Red and Emerald, and I have half the Kanto badges in SoulSilver).
  22. Never claimed the cartoon was a lighter blue. What I did claim is that the cartoon is more of a gray-blue, and the Takara MP-10 is more of a purple-blue. Takara's is more G1 toy accurate, but neither is particularly toon accurate. At the end of the day, you're entitled to your opinion, but I don't believe that the purplish Takara blue looks any better than the lighter Hasbro blue, I happen to think that if I had the opportunity to pick either the Hasbro version or the Takara version at an even price I'd take the Hasbro one because the Takara's dead eyes are a bigger issues to me than the shade of blue, and if I can't say that I think the Takara version is better at an even price I surely don't think it's worth the $100+ over the Hasbro version.
  23. Yeah, I've told every one of my friends who have complained that a PC is so much more expensive than a console that they're pretty off base. I mean, since they're the types who buy consoles at or near launch, you figure they're spending $400-$500 for a console. Sure, a $1000 gaming rig is more expensive... but chances are if you're going to own some kind of PC anyway. New game console + cheap PC is already equal to the cost of of a moderate gaming PC. But then, while my console friends are buying games for $60, or occasionally talking about a sale where they paid $45-$50, I'm buying up most of my games for under $20 on Steam sales. So any extra money I spend on my gaming rigs, I make it back saving money on games... that will still be playable when I build my next rig. How's that backwards-compatibility thing working out for you guys, my console friends? And yeah, PC games look, at worst, the same as their console counterparts, and at best much, much better. I recall playing the demo for the original Uncharted and thinking it looked amazing... until I got my first gaming rig and played Crysis. I also remember arguing with a buddy who actually was into PC gaming but got Dragon Age II for the Xbox 360, thinking it couldn't be that different... until he saw the PC version at my house and thought I was playing a completely different game. When the new consoles hit, the differences won't be so pronounced... at first. That's why Watchdogs PC requirements, while not out of the question for a lot of PC gamers, are a lot closer to maxing their specs than, say, the last Call of Duty. When a new console is released, it's like it's catching up to current tech. Thing is, tech doesn't stay current for long, and after a year or so the PS4 and the Xbone will be stuck where they are, Intel, AMD, and Nvidia will be offering up all sorts of new goodies, and before long I'll be back to playing the latest Halo with my friend's wife and thinking about how crappy console graphics are.
  24. I wanted a Razer Blade, but it was too hard to justify over a grand more than I paid for my MSI GE70 when it was always meant to be the computer I play on when I'm not at home and can't play on my desktop.
