My old gaming rig was a GTX 465, and I skipped the 500 series. My current box is a GTX 660ti, so I think I'm going to skip the 700 series and upgrade when the 800 series is a thing.

Ah, mobile. Seems like with laptops, you can either get one that's sort of normal-looking and compromise on the GPU, or you get one that's as thick and heavy as two regular laptops taped together. I'm guessing you went with option 1? While I do 90% of my gaming on a desktop, I bought a laptop because I travel a bit, and I like to game on the go (seriously, Civ V was the only thing I had to do in the evenings in China when we were visiting the wife's family, and they were all into some spy show). I went with an i7-3630QM, 8GB of RAM, and GTX 660M. I kind of regret it, because it was out-dated pretty much from the minute I got it, but I didn't want to lug a tank half way around the world and back.- 6894 replies

Sorry, the desktop market was what I meant. I hadn't followed the Haswell releases, and I wasn't sure if there was an 8-core Core i7, or plans for one. I knew about the Xeons, but I wasn't counting them. It'd be like asking if Mitsubishi makes any trucks (since the Raider)and answering that they make the Fuso. Technically correct, but not really the same thing.- 6894 replies

Looks that way. It's been leaked that you get one of the new starters from friends, and a Kanto starter from the Professor. Since Charmander is the most bestest starter still after six generations of Pokemon, and Mega Charizard X looks way more awesome than Mega Charizard Y. Yveltal looks pretty cool, but not as cool as Mega Charizard X. Guess my only decision now is Froakie or Chespin, since it doesn't make sense to have two Fire starters. Aw, who am I kidding, it's Froakie. Grass types are lame. . I'm good to go, with a Core i7-3770K, a GeForce GTX 660ti, and 16GB of RAM. Really, I get that a lot of PC gamers get buy with cheaper Core i5s and cards in the 550-650 range, but a 64-bit OS and 8GB of RAM has been pretty basic for PC gamers for at least 3-4 years now, so I'm not sure how big a deal this news is. Side note, does Intel even have any 8-core CPUs? Their recommendation, an i7-3770 is a quad-core, albeit one with hyper-threading.- 6894 replies

So apparently, like Mewtwo, Charizard is going to have two Mega Evolutions, an X and a Y. Such a dilemma. The pattern, since Gold and Silver, has been to have two legendaries, one for each flavor. If both legendaries are available in the game, it's usually that one is available before the Elite Four, and the other isn't until after you've become the champ. And, since Silver, I've always picked which version I get based on the legendary on the cover: Silver (and SoulSilver) for Lugia, Ruby for Groudon, Diamond for Dialga (although I swapped it for Platinum for Giratina), White for Zekrom, and Black 2 for Black Kyurem. Continuing this tradition, I should be getting Pokemon Y, because Yveltal looks way cooler than Xerneas. I was already thinking that I liked Mewtwo's pure-psychic X form to his psychic/fighting Y form, though. Now, we have an awesome fire/dragon X form for Charizard that's way cooler than the previously announced fire/flying Y form... and of all of the starters in all the Pokemon games, Charmader/Charizard has always been my favorite. I may have to go with Pokemon X, even if the legendary is a deer.- 6894 replies

That's your concern? I don't need the trailer to be a car carrier; I want it to be as G1-looking as possible. The original G1 toy was a brick in bot mode, though, with no articulation except bending at the elbows and shoulders that could rotate (but not swing out). Not only did his legs have zero articulation, they were physically stuck together. And have you seen him from behind? It will be interesting to see how they made it work so that you start with a G1-style trailer and a white MP-10 for the cab and get a Masterpiece-quality G1 Ultra Magnus bot mode.- 17159 replies

You don't get it because Valve isn't designing it for you (or people like you), and you're not their target audience. If you game on your PC, you're probably already in the Steam ecosystem. Let me put it like this... I have a friend who I have been trying to get into PC gaming for years. I mean, at least since the first Crysis came out. Some of the arguments he makes, which I've heard time and again from more people than just him, include not being used to gaming with a keyboard and mouse, not wanting to wait for his computer to boot up, not wanting to deal with Windows and its issues to play games, a gaming PC is too expensive, it's more comfortable to game on the TV in the living room, and it's so much easier to just pop in a console game and play. My buddy is the target audience. Steambox and SteamOS are being designed to address every one of my buddy's arguments for not getting into PC gaming. Steamboxes running SteamOS will be more console than PC, priced in line with the next-gen consoles that will be on the market when the first Steamboxes hit, designed to easily connect to a TV and setup like a console. SteamOS will provide a (nearly) instant-on OS, not to surf the net or make spreadsheets but to run the Steam launcher and provide access to the Steam store.

I know, it's so very un-MacrossWorld. I was sort of coming at it from the opposite direction. Sure, I like some games (shooters, RPGs) with a mouse and keyboard, but I have a lot of games (racing, action, platforming) that I prefer to use a controller for. And when I first saw the Steambox controller, I was thinking "WTF? You can't play with buttons like that!" But after reading some of the developers input on the controller, I'm reserving judgement until I try it for myself. It sounds like an interesting compromise that's really trying to let you play both controller-friendly and mouse/keyboard only games on a console in the living room. And that's really Valve's goal, here. Enthusiasts like us who built PCs for gaming are already sold on PC and Steam as a gaming platform. Now Valve's trying to win over all our friends who we've been trying to get on Steam but keep insisting they prefer the "ease" of a console. It's worth highlighting two things from the developer comments I read. The dual trackpads seem very advanced, especially with haptic feedback. Ichiro Lambe of Dejobaan games say they feel like "weighted trackballs", so the responsiveness could be better than you think. He did say it's more precise and better for FPS games than traditional controllers. Second, Team Meat's Tommy Refenes played Super Meat Boy and Spelunky with it. For Super Meat Boy, he used the entire right trackpad as a jump button, and for Spelunky he mapped all four Xbox 360 face buttons to the right trackpad. He goes on to say that the Steambox controller in that setup worked great and was able to handle the "twitch movements" needed for Spelunky. His summary:"Great Start, needs some improvements, but I could play any game I wanted with it just fine."

As weird as the controller looks, there are reports on Engadget and Kotaku from developers who have played with it. They seem pretty positive about it.

Could not disagree more. Yes, the blue is a little too light, but the Takara paint is bordering on purple. The Takara paint seems closer to the original G1 toy, but not the Optimus in my head (mostly the old cartoon and more recent comic books). Prime's blue should be more gray than purple. Even if I did like the Takara blue better, the cold, dead eyes would ruin it for me. And that's assuming all things are equal, which they're not. Importing a Takara is significantly more expensive. I might consider paying Takara prices for a cool repaint (I passed on Nemesis Prime because I'm kind of sick of black Prime repaints, but I'd commit to buying an MP Pepsi Prime), but not when there's a similar-enough alternative. It's the same reason I held off for US MP Soundwave, even though in that case I do readily admit that I like the Takara paint job better on that one.- 17159 replies

A lot of people seem to think that SteamOS will be competition for Windows. In a lot of important ways, I doubt it will be. People who use their computers for work, graphic design, videography, spreadsheets, programming, etc are still going to be using Windows or Mac OS for a long time. Mark my words, SteamOS isn't going to be a full-blown desktop OS, at least, not as Valve intends it. It's designed to be a lightweight OS solely to facilitate the running of Steam and Steam games. It could make my future gaming rig free of Microsoft's stupid squares, but I'm sure I'll still have a Windows laptop or something for other computer stuff.

The correct answer is Frenzy. Yes, the black and red toy was labeled Rumble, and yes, many modern toys (including Habsros) depicting this character are also labeled Rumble. But half the time, new toys of the blue one is labeled Rumble, and while it technically might have been the result of a production error, 2+ seasons of the cartoon featuring a blue tap-bot named Rumble as a main character has cemented that as canon for me.- 17159 replies

I thought they were just going to announce a Steam Box console... this is so much cooler. My only wish now is that some how Valve develops and easy way for developers to port Windows games to Steam OS, so I don't have to pollute my next gaming rig with whatever crap Microsoft tries to pass off as the future of PCs.

They're starting to get around. When I bought mine, I ordered from Newegg because there wasn't a Gamestop within 200 miles of me that carried it. Now there's a few in Pittsburgh. Let's see... Bergen County... the Gamestop in the Bergen Mall has some in stock, as does the one in the Garden State Plaza, the one on Main St. in Paterson, and the one Chestnut Ridge Rd in Woodcliff Lake. Any of those nearby? I can't promise any of them have a demo unit, though. I will say this about the Shield. It's a solid piece of hardware, comfortable for long gaming sessions with great battery life. But it's too big to be pocketable. Game wise, Android gaming is kind of hit and miss. Some games optimized for it are ok, but some games won't use the controls, only the touchscreen, and having a big ol' controller attached makes it worse because it gets in the way. PC streaming is kind of a mixed bag, too. It assumes you have good enough hardware (luckily, I already did). I tried playing Grid 2 on it. I felt like I was squinting, like the 5" screen was too small for all the detail, but the game looked phenomenal on it. The first race I did streamed great, but the second started stuttering before the Shield lost the connection to the PC. In full disclosure, though, Nvidia released a Shield update that's supposed to help, and my single-band N300 router was below their recommendation. I'll have to re-test now that I replaced my router with a dual-band AC1750 (and hard-wired my desktop into it). Emulation is great on it, though. The Tegra 4 chipset in the Shield easily handles NES, SNES, GBC, GBA, N64, Genesis, and PlayStation emulation. There's even a PSP emulator, but compatibility is a little spotty (I haven't got any of the Gundam or Macross games from Artdink to work). Most of the emulators I've been using on it are free, but I do recommend buying My Boy for GBA and FPse for PlayStation.- 6894 replies

Like the original black and white Gameboy game (which came out as Blue in the States), or the GBA remake? I recently got an Nvidia Shield, but found out that emulation is a better use for it than PC streaming, so I just finished going through Fire Red on it, and I started playing Emerald. Might see if I can get through Soul Silver and Diamond on my 3DS before Y comes out (I'm not really interesting in doing White or Black 2 again).- 6894 replies

You're like the third person I know that's going with Y. We're not going to have anybody to trade with... I guess that's what happens when one has an awesome dragon-bat thing and the other has a deer. Maybe Nintendo should go back to the Red/Blue practice of putting the starters on the cover?- 6894 replies
