I think there is a misunderstanding about the nature of SWAG in relation to the structural durability of a Valkyrie. I honestly believe that the creators behind Macross did not intend SWAG to be a poorly thought out active system that acts like a Star Trek structural integrity field. I.E. the fighter will collapse without the system if it does something strenuous. It seems more like likely that the SWAG system boosts the already impressive properties of Hyper Carbon but does not supplant the need to design a variable fighter that can transform with no additional system other than the actuators that physically move the parts.

In general Yamato seems to be following the general exposure of character Valkyries as established by the old IMAI and ARII kits. Max and Kakizaki's VF-1A's were just optional paint jobs for those kits. Even the Angel Birds scheme has gotten some new exposure thanks to the Hasegawa kit.

The VE-1 is essentially identical to the other VF-1s. You can leave the FAST packs off. The only thing that is permanent is the long arm on the backpack where the radar dish connects.

Even that mode doesn't do anything to radically change the look of the Auroran. In fighter mode it's just a helicopter sans rotor blades. I quite like the Southern Cross machines, but I have no delusions that they're supposed to look like giant chariots and space samurai. That was part of the original premise.

I actually got in on his Thanksgiving day episode thanks to Roger's invitation. We derailed his discussion with talk as to whether Protoculture is a solid or liquid. I also tried to grill him on Gundam Climax UC. That game is so awful I don't see how anyone can like it. You should have heard his giant rant about how nothing can beat the F-14 and how it's not outdated. Also the Auroran is the greatest space helicopter ever and can even beat the VF-1.

Well, apparently he is in Robotech and somehow you can't have a multinational crew in a Robotech movie. No sir, Robotech is only for red blooded Americans.
