A little help. Looking for a good mech series.
the white drew carey replied to Effect's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I'd try the whole Patlabor set, the OAV's and TV series as well. They can sometimes be alternately funny or exciting, and tend to portray less "political intrigue" found in the movies (which are still good). You shouldn't use the movies as a gauge for the whole franchise, because it varies so much. -
I'm baaaack... Now that I've (finally) landed a new job, and have spent enough time learning the position, it's about time I jump back into my projects. First off, here's what's on my plate: -Roycommi's Macross: ELS project -Another Macross project (which is under wraps at this time) -A small project for a local band -I'm also looking into returning to school either this fall or, most likely, in the spring. So Until that's settled I won't be able to devote as much free time to these projects as I'd like. -Two weddings in June which will suck up 10 days total (wow). Other than that, here are my plans for the ELS project- I'm planning on scrapping almost everything I've done so far. 1) At first I was satisfied with simply blurring the background and land-type tiles, but upon further reflection, they simply look like crap, and Macross deserves the best from me. I plan on re-drawing each tile so that, while looking like the original, will still keep a sharp level of detail. I also plan on adding a strong level of detail to the buildings and structures so that they will look more realistic. 2) For the player tiles- I realised that, although the VF-1's in fighter mode look good, the position of the VF-1 in the tile doesn't lend itself well to accomplishing a clean and steady transformation to GERWALK/Battroid and vice-versa. Now that I've been fiddling with Adobe ImageReady, I'm ready to start working on clean transformations in the following: Fighter -> GERWALK -> Battroid and Fighter -> Battroid. 3) For the status tiles (the ones inside the information window) I want to clean up the images I've done so far and make sure proportions are accurate. I definitely want to re-work the character images, particularly the helmeted ones. Roycommi once asked for the faces to vary a bit from each character (as opposed to the single generic image with different colors utilised in the original). I think this is a good idea and would like to run with it. That's about it for now. T-wolves just beat The Lakers to go to game six, and I would like them to whup The Lakers ass, because Shaq's a big cross-eyed fattie and Kobe will never be like Jordan because he's snotty.

I didn't draw any line. Most people will tell you that "sex sells" is the lowest common denominator, no matter what form of entertainment you're talking about. I'd like to see what you think my criteria is? If you haven't noticed, not once have I critiqued the skills presented in the drawing itself (which is one of the best Yune piece's I've seen yet), but simply gone straight to the first thought that sprang into my mind upon seeing it. Would you like some other samples? Every one of the MPC boxes feature "buffed up" characters which, IMHO, I do not think is simply due to Yune's artistic style.

Folly to whomever tries to argue that this picture was done for reasons other than eliciting responses like this: True, artwork based on a subject is open to interpretation. I was just voicing my disappointment that HG had to service the lowest common denominator. Anyone remember the Lebatars?HG has a history of trying to make these characters "sexy".

For shame >EXO<, for shame! When I draw Macross stuff I try to emulate the original designs, but in my own style. I don't make Hikaru's flightsuit skintight so you can see his junk in all of it's glory, or resize the shoulder pads of the DYRL flightsuits. The "downsizing" of the armor in that picture, from it's original design* to what it is now is simply a means to show off her figure. They didn't just draw it another way, they purposely altered it to fit the idea of "We want to show Dana in her body armor, but we want it to be sexy." To argue differently would be folly. I'm not even crying out "they messed with it" simply because it's HG. I'm just calling it like it is. *I like the original design because it portrays an homage to medievel suits of armor. Also, the armor as originallly designed is more robust and does not compliment a svelt figure- an aspect I found very realistic.
-
Are you the keymaster? After seeing this picture: I can really appreciate how much they screwed up the armor in order to make it "sexy". Considering I've always been a fan of the Southern Cross armor, I'm kind of ticked. But hey, It's HG.

I'm confused as well. I mean, I can enjoy your enthusiasm, but so far all the threads you've posted in the fanworks are scans of RT comics or, in this case, a screencap.

Harmony Gold's DYRL official DYRL site?
the white drew carey replied to Apollo Leader's topic in Movies and TV Series
Umm... RT sucks. -
Agreed. I'm also not a fan of "Psuedo-Wear and Tear" ala' the MWC4 on the second design. But otherwise, both are neat. I like the first better but, IIRC, screen printing outside of the center of a shirt (and most notably, even partially around) are a tad more expensive.

Do you drive a diesel car?
the white drew carey replied to Jolly Rogers's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
The problem, at this time, with hydrogen fuel is that it costs as much, if not more than gas, to produce and refine the level of hydrogen needed to run the engine. Technology is moving swiftly with this one, but with the advent, and rising popularity, of hybrids, progress has taken on a less frenetic pace than originally set. Jolly Rogers is correct. Most Asian and European countries have well developed mass-transit systems, which is lacking in most of America, and then even the mass-transit systems in the big cities are lackluster at best. For many people who need to commute up to and above 50 miles a day for work, a car is the only option. Winkle- Yeah, you Canadians may pay more in gas, but you make up for it with those cheap pharmacueticals. On average, US citizens pay 40%-80% more for the same prescription drugs than anywhere else in the world. -
Page 036, (un-numbered) steps 6,7 & 8. Unless it says something in Japanese which I am not aware of (and DOK [who's DOK?] translated), this aspect is clearly shown as a part of the transformation from fighter to GERWALK. It's true that this bit of the transformation is never actually seen in the series or movie, but it does seem to be an actual step in the transformation process. I just thought it would be neat to see what the transformation is actually supposed to look like, but was never animated.

Two words: Wow.

Then instead of elitism, call it favouritism. You don't see a newbie who has made similar mistakes being "slapped" by the Mods with a custom title, only regulars (and the most regular of the regulars at that). If anyone has a problem with their custom titles, one would think that a quick PM to the Mods would have it removed. Athough the Mods assigned these custom titles in jest, I'd hate to think they'd keep them in place against a members wishes. I don't know. I'm all for comaraderie in the forums, but lately it's seemed, IMHO, to have taken on a bit of an "Old Boys Club" feeling. Hence the "elitist" statement. Personally, I'd just prefer it be all or nothing. Either we can choose our member titles, everyone gets a generic member title or we do away with them altogether. But that's just me. And I like chicken.
-
And yet some members still get to retain their "custom" assigned titles, instead of the new generic titles based on post-count. Way to encourage an open and welcoming forum instead of elitism.

Also, as I stated in Doc Gonzo's thread, the hips/intakes should rotate down slightly on their hydrualics to allow the arms to lock into place, and then they rotate back. Also, it's Max's VF-1s, but still sports his 013 number instead of the appropriate 001. Otherwise, it looks good! Once the film is fully loaded, I can control the frame rate and move back forth, so the details are a lot clearer.
-
PS- Your transformation from fighter to GERWALK is also inaccurate, as the hips/intakes are supposed to flip down slightly on order to accomodate the arms moving into place. I just noticed that you included the "sides" of the torso folding out when it switches to Battroid. Great job!
-
Agreed. If memory serves me, the chest/back splits as the chest moves from a horizontal to a vertical position. In your animation, the chest is almost all of the way into position before the back folds down. Otherwise, it looks terribly wonderful. I like it a lot.

The best part is that Rodriguez tore up his Directors Guild card because they told him Frank Miller can't be a co-Director because the guild only recognizes "Legitimate Directing Teams"!!! Way to go, Rodriguez!!!

The one problem I have with this is that it sounds almost exactly like the same scenario for Anakin and Padme in the Geonosian droid factory in epII... -
