Have You Ever Met A Celebrity Or Famous Person?
the white drew carey replied to Phalanx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Celebrity or Famous person is subjective to what you think is celebratory or worthy of fame. Joe Genaro: Guitarist for The Dead Milkmen. Was penpals with him since I saw them live when I was 12 in '87 (my first concert). I've inadvertently hung with Blink 182 backstage while trying to leave the venue through the wrong exit. Ended up hanging and drinking beers for about 30 minutes before my buddies flipped and wanted to leave. Saw one of my favorite bands. Samiam, when I lived in Madison, Wisconsin. Drank lots of beer, chatted with Jason, the lead singer, and eventually we drove around town at 3 in my car at the morning hitting up afterbars. John Stewart was in town (once again, Madison) doing a little stand-up tour during for Comedy Central during which they would show a little known cartoon called "Jesus vs. Santa." Anyhow, Mr. Stewart was spending the night prior to the show at The Corner Room, where varous patrons slobbered over a slightly familiar famous person. From one table over I intoned, quite drunk and rather loudly, that If I had ever gottena comedy show on MTV, it wouldn't have sucked. He heard this, chuckled, and raised his glass to me. I eventually went over, said "Hi", he said "Your an ass", then we laughed together and chatted for a while on the state of stand-up. He's a great guy. I've hung with The Vandals. Lagwagon, Face to Face, Jawbreajer, The Lawrence Arms and a bunch of other bands you've probably never heard of. It's always special to me. My wife has met Seal and my Dad used to jog with Muhammed Ali in the 70's. No kidding. -

No Animated Avatars...
the white drew carey replied to the white drew carey's topic in MW Site News & Member Feedback
Hmmm... Since it seems the Mods are able to edit their posts without having the "Edited On..." show up at the bottom, I assumed it wasn't added into the MW TOS, as I just scrolled to the bottom to see if it had been edited. Now I know. And knowing is... -
As you can see, Sumdumgai's custom member title says: No Animated Avatars. Maybe I missed something, but is this a recent guideline/rule which was instated?

Yeah, that game trailer's been up for at least a year. While, I'm hopeful, the screenshots on the ofificial page don't look too promising.

Continuing The Macross Saga
the white drew carey replied to Wicked Ace's topic in Movies and TV Series
But a story about one particular task force doing SAR for the Megaroad-1 would be a neat story. -
Continuing The Macross Saga

I think that's just the thing. Whether for good or bad, SK seems to hold Macross firmly in his grasp. There really are two options: 1) We simply wait for Kawamori to be ready for another Macross story- in which case, based on past history, a portion of the fans will not like it. Or 2) Kawamori lets someone else take the reins in leading a new project with SK as either a story consultant/final approval and, of course, VF design. I just have this feeling that he doesn't want his baby to become another Gundam which, as a whole franchise, runs the gamut between genius and ludicrous. It's just that Macross is still well thought of and, by the sound of it, many fans really want a new epic set after SW1, but well before Mac7. Oh well, I guess we'll just have to wait... -

I may be off base here, but I think Kawamori has slightly alienated many of the older Macross fans with his increasingly spiritualistic projects. -
Question Re: Older Threads In This Forum
the white drew carey replied to sketchley's topic in Fan Works
I may be wrong, but I think having it set to "Show All" will use bandwidth as it has to load up almost two years of topics, instead of just 1 month. It's being frugal. -
It's odd, because the Alphonse possibly looks worst in the static pose. All of the action poses look great! I haven't been able to buy a toy in years, but I think I'll have to sneak this one in under the radar (as well as any other Patlabor releases... but don't tell the wife!!!)

Macross / Robotech episode 1 CG progress
the white drew carey replied to Jay-Lew's topic in Fan Works
Nice work, but isn't the gunpod a little too tight up there? I thought it was slung a bit lower? -
Christ, I think I just ruined my keyboard... Nope, stillworks. Tha Alphonse is awesome!!! Maybe they show the shotgun but it's actually planned for a Unit 2 release? The bignut problem don't look so bad in the pictures, either...

I'll Swallow Your Soul!

This is true. There isn't enough flogging nowadays. -
Apparently, I can't spell or formulate coherent thoughts either. Damn you, beer!

I hear you, same here! 418189 And that's the conundrum: Whether or not to appeal to the fanbase which grew up around the cartoon, or those who still hold the Turtles as they wer in the first 15 to 20 comic books? Me? The Turtles are like Highlander. Almost ost of the later shite, including the gay-porn fest, blasphemous cartoon, are simply shut out of our minds, like all the Highlander sequels and (ugh...) TV shows. I may be a fanboy, but I've always dreamed of doing a real Turtles story set within the firt 10 issues. I'm lame.

This just falls under the great Superchunk verses: There's nothing new nothing new. Everything's borrowed, everything's used. The one shining point is that Evil Dead fans actually seem to get a kick out of it. How about you actually GO SEE IT, and then decide whether or not you want to rip on it? -
Mw Finally Has Banners?
the white drew carey replied to UN Spacy's topic in MW Site News & Member Feedback
I don't mind the banners, except thatit was advertising something made by a company which I have already been served crap from. Let us see more banners, yet have them be advertising quality works that MWers want. Advertising a Toynami Doll here is like trying to sell MOPAR to MUGEN entusiasts. -
Blue, Red, Orange and Purple headbands mean cartoon turtles, not comic turtles. I'll check it out, but the fact that i's listed as "family" means it will be nothing like the comic. My favorite version of the turtles is as they were seen in issue #1, baby. These guys look better than most of the turtle iterations we've seen (especially the ones where they are insanely muscled), but not as good as #1-style turtles. p.s.- irises? we don't need no stinking irises!!!

Worst Science Fiction Film of All Time
the white drew carey replied to JELEINEN's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Final Cut was pretty bad. The problem with most bad sci-fi movies usually isn't the the plot, but the execution. So many good ideas have been done so, so very wrong. It makes me curl up and weep. -
I interpret that as 1 person talking to himself, when a simple pointer link would suffice, and the ongoing actual conversation of the thread was on an entirely different topic. In other words - it doesn't serve the community. the other threads are 'allowed' to continue, because they appear to be more than one member adding to them, they're relatively on-topic discussions, and the discussions aren't getting out of hand (into the dubious discussion topic zone, nor being hijacked and going off topic.) Does that make sense? (seriously... lack of coffee at the moment... no idea if what I'm blithering on about makes any sense.) 417313 Question- Did YOU actually look at all the people who posted? No offense to >EXO<, but regardless of where the pics were coming from, there were many people replying to that thread (many posters=discussion), and even if there were posts about dudes, they 1) weren't enough to derail the thread yet, and 2) I've never seen a rule here on MW outlawing homosexuality (alhough I know they were joking [at least... most of them...]). And I'm not a fool, but thanks for explaining why the other threads are "allowed" to continue. Yet, you weren't around when the O/T mess exploded in the first place. Regardless of how On-Topic the aircraft or automotive threads are to their subject matter, they still DO NOT FALL UNDER THE HEADING OF "ANIME AND SCIFI." The rules were put in place and, I was under the impression when that happened, that they'd be strictly enforced. But that is clearly not the case. Basically, if MW wants to tout that it does not allow O/T discussion, than these threads simply should not exist! Allowing some O/T threads to run while others are shut down simply shows an inconcistency in regards to the interpretation and/or enforcement of the rules. In the long run, it make MW looks like it's run on hypocrisy. I may be bringing my sense of beliefs into this, but I'm strongly of the opinion that rules cannot be selectively enforced. What's good for the goose better well be damned good for the gander. Otherwise the rules and guidelines are simply a sick joke.

The problem with not having an O/T thread is that the mods are then forced to make judgments on what can stay and what can't. Just looking at the first 50 threads in Anime and SciFi we have a thread about the "babes of ADV" which has been locked for various reasons, yet we have a "Jessica Biel Auction" thread which still survives even though it's one link to anything sci-fi is that she was in Stealth. We have a long-running automotive thread as well as the continuation of the long running aircraft thread, both of which are so grounded in reality to be the antethesis of sci-fi, yet they are allowed to run their course. My point being is that there are many threads which are clearly O/T and are allowed to continue and thrive. The reasons that some threads are killed while others are allowed to flourish rest on the mods and the continuation of their existence can sometimes be attributed to actual interpretation of the set guidelines, and other times have clearly been favoritism or lack of it. Someone earlier mentioned that they don't post much at other forums. I'm that way, too. I don't care for the people at most other forums, and I consider many of the people here to be the closest thing you can get to online friends. We are a community, and as a community many of us may want to discuss things that fall outside of what is now determined as acceptable subject matter. Sometimes we'll post it anyways and hope that a mod finds it acceptable, or likes us personally, or any other myriad reasons to let it run it's course. If the current mods don't want to deal with an O/T section, ask for volunteers, or nominate some long-standing members who will be willing to patrol said section and keep it in line. At the least, it would be a worthy experiment; at the worst it'll fall apart and the whole O/T idea will go away for a couple months or so. It's true, O/T threads can be dirty places. But that's because, being O/T, most forums don't put effort into patrolling it. We here at MW respect and revere our sence of community and, most probably, will patrol it in a more vigilant manner than the other threads receive. Then again, if the Admins say no, that's that. Just my two cents.

Aircraft Vs Thread 3
the white drew carey replied to David Hingtgen's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Ummm... George H.W. Bush served as a Navy pilot in WWII, flying a TBF Avenger off of a light carrier (the name eludes me at the moment). He was shot down during a mission and was picked up the by the submarine USS Finback. I don't mind if they name a ship after him, as he served a our country in the military and as president (whether you liked him or not). I just don't think anyone should have a ship named after them until after they're dead.
