All Things Videogame Related: EXTREME VS!!
GU-11 replied to Keith's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Finished Tomb Raider a couple days ago. Worth every cent. The boss battles were challenging but not frustrating (on normal mode, at least). Not the most original story, but it works.- 6876 replies

Hi, all! Just finished painting up some engine parts with Tamiya gun metal, and I'm waiting for the paint to cure before hand-brushing some Future Floor Polish to seal it. The question is, how long does the paint need to fully cure? I googled for some tips, but got no definitive answers. All I found were horror stories of Tamiya acrylics cracking under a coat of FFP due to insufficient curing time. Thing is, none of the forum comments tell you just how long it takes before you can safely clear coat the FFP, only that the paint has to be fully cured. Also, I AB'ed some gloss red onto some plastic parts with a sufficiently glossy finish, but although I waited 2 weeks for it to cure, some parts that I painted especially heavy is still somewhat tacky. Is it safe to clear coat, of do I continue to let it off-gas until it's hard and smooth like the other areas?

I don't usually abide by any strict rules, but usually I go by storyline. If I like the story, I'll probably buy the figs; example, Macross Plus and SDF Macross. That said, I do buy valks from movies I don't like or that I've never watched before, like Gamlin's VF-22S, or even the "non-canon" YF-19 Double Nuts repaint. In short, if it looks good, I buy it. Scale-wise, I try to keep everything in the same size.

Very true. The only cammo patterns I've ever seen with distinct lines are the blue cammo patterns on the Sukhoi SU-35 Flankers. I should try testing out cammo patterns using my basic AB next. Not sure it it's precise enough for that, but there's only one way to find out, I guess.

Speaking of double action AB's, I'm still wondering if this Tamiya basic airbrush I've got can be considered single or double action. The compressed air flows at a constant rate, which you can't control, but you CAN control the paint flow via the trigger, depending on how far you squeeze. What does that make it? 1 1/2 action? Also, the box say I can spray lines as thin as 2mm, but even on the smallest setting, the the lines were a lot thicker than that. That said, I was using thinned food coloring, so that might have something to do with it.

Wish I'd bitten the bullet and pre-ordered MGR Raiden. Now it's sold out at my hobby store.

Those look awesome! Did you do any masking? I've seen some people use blu-tack to mask the parts, creating more "faded" edges.

The HLJ link says its a March release, but given Yamato's current state, will it still see a release? Never mind; l just noticed the hkcollectibles link. Already released, just hasn't arrived at HLJ. Wish they made a VT-1 Super Ostrich kit; might be a bit of a challenge building and painting it, but at least I'll be able to own one.

Thanks, MT! I was worried about the glossiness, since many of the pics on Google showed really glossy surfaces. Seems that these modelers actually polish and wax their paint jobs until they squeak! Since I don't build cars, I won't need to get that mirror finish. But for the occasional Transformer repaint, I'll still need a nice shiny finish. As you said, a coat or two of clear spray or FFP should be good enough. Most of the stuff I build are Gundam and the occasional Borderbreak and Armored Core kits. Fortunately, the first two look best in flat colors, and I don't buy a lot of AC kits. Well, even the AC kits don't need the kind of sheen found on model cars. I've always wanted to build some fighter jets and attack helicopters, but the builds look very complex, especially when painting cammo patterns. Not sure if I'm up to the task just yet.

Finally got the right ratio! 1:1 paint to thinner at 7-8 cm distance gave a sufficiently glossy finish. There were some dust-like particles on the surface (VERY little), but that's probably due to a rather dusty room. Each coat was medium-heavy, and I waited about a minute between each coat, no blow-drying. The surface wasn't as smooth or as glossy I'd hoped, but then the surface of the spoon itself wasn't exactly a mirror finish. I'll give the test spoons a day or two before hand brushing future floor polish to see if I can get a glossier finish.

Sadly, the only brand of paints that are readily available to me right now is Tamiya. TBH, Tamiya flats and metallics AB very nicely; it's just the bright gloss colors that I have trouble with. Are other brands easier to AB when it comes to red, white and yellow?

It was a brave effort, but ultimately flawed. Too much compromise in the bot mode, and WAY too complex to transform.- 9275 replies

Guys, how long do you usually wait between coats of paint? The Fichtenfoo "spray-and-blow-dry" method worked well for gun metal and probably flat coats, but the gloss red doesn't react well to that. I'm thinking a couple of heavy coats and waiting up to a minute or two between coats might work. Any advice? @ Derex: I think I might have accidentally hit that magic ratio with the gun metal, because it was just the way you described. Lasts forever, dries the instant it lands on the plastic, no splatter or runs. I mixed it roughly 2:1 paint to thinner. I tried the same ratio for Tamiya X-7 Red, and it was all grainy. Thinned it a lot, and it became runny. Today I'll try a 50-50 ratio and see if it'll be better. @MT: The red's a nightmare to paint. Either too thick or too thin, or sprayed too far or too close. Made some progress with the second try. Hopefully I'll finally nail the perfect paint ratio (testing out 50-50 ratio today) and distance today. In the future, I think I'll buy spray cans for all gloss paints, and save the AB'ing for flat colors. Problem is, I stocked up on quite a few bottle of gloss paints before realizing how hard they were to paint! As for what I've been up to; still practicing with plastic spoons.

Incidentally, I just picked up my copy of Tomb Raider. I'll only be playing it tomorrow, though. Read some very good reviews, and I'm really looking forward to it.- 6876 replies

UPDATE 2: Thinned the paint a little more, and the finish is much glossier without "orange peel." Now I'm having problems with "runny" paint, and the streams of dried paint shows underneath the older coat. The paint also lifts if I put on a second heavy coat too early; have to wait at least a minute before applying a second coat. Will try to adjust the distance a little and see if I get better results later or tomorrow.

Ni-cd battery pack question - need them for my AB compressor
GU-11 replied to GU-11's topic in The Workshop!
Muchos Gracias, Chas! This one's perfect! Just need to wait for my wallet to recover to get this and get this and the SWA-3 adapter! (yes, I'm that broke; after pre-ordering 3 HT figs, a half dozen MP Transformers, AND just paid for MP Soundwave, 3 games, a DYRL VF-1 Super pack set, the Tumbler and Batpod, your wallet would be in treading between life and death, too ) -
UPDATE: Just tested the X-7 Gloss Red, and it turned out grainy. I used the same 2 parts paint to 1 part thinner as the user manual recommended. I remember reading something that says a grainy surface if due to the paint being either too thin or too thick. Problem is, I don't remember which it is. Any advice?

Watching season 4 of Bleach. Nice surprise with Nel's past, as well as those of Hiyori and and Shinji. Not sure what's up with the constant interruptions of the current plot to show the characters' origins. Not boring or anything, but kind of awkward given the timing. -

@ David Hingtgen: Yeah, now that you mentioned it, but honestly I never noticed it until this promo pic came about. The jet looks more like a Legioss (the way the back of the jet mode looks similar, and in bot mode the nosecone is on his back) and before I saw the reprolabels promo, it looked for all the world like just another aircraft carrier thingie to me. ** edited for typos.- 9275 replies

IMO, Hot Rod is a lost cause as far as scale is concerned--in fact, TF's in general seem to change in scale according to the needs to the episode all the time. The animators just never concerned themselves with scale, ever. I've seen vidcaps of Trailbreaker sitting inside a fricking station wagon.- 17112 replies

How about using those artists' erasers, the ones that look like "play-doh" which you use to erase charcoal drawings? The pliable texture should allow you to get into those panel lines. Never tried it before (never dared to touch such expensive figures) so I have no idea if it works. Hope this helps, though.

@ Derex: Damn, that is a gorgeous diorama! @ WM-sensei: That is possibly the most beautiful VF-25 build I've ever seen, and ample warning for me to stay away from even attempting to build one. I wouldn't know how to begin fixing that broken hinge myself.
