  1. Yeah, even I realize that I spent 35 bucks to get into a dealers room. Though i got some cool things in there, so that wasn't bad itself. I blame no one for the setbacks and agree with Fortress Maximus. The con did their best to deal with an increasingly bad situation. In the end, the 35 bucks was admission to the dealers room, and a donation towards the money they lost due to Mari not being able to perform (they paid for EVERYTHING). It's a small price to pay. My only real complaint was having trouble finding registration. It wasn't really marked the first day. I even got the absolute last Robotech giveaway, even though I didn't pre-reg.
  2. I did. I listened to it on the way back to the hotel in Oakland. It was done by the time we crossed the Bay bridge. Though to be fair, we did get stuck behind some unlucky bastard which led to a moment where the lyrics to "Wonderful People" became rather ironic. That kind of made it worth buying, and it was a nice album. Besides, it kind of covers for the regret I had in 2002 on not being able to buy one when I first met her(they were playing a CD while I was waiting). Still a shame she didn't get to perform.
  3. Fortress Maximus, I can confirm that I am attending. I need to register in the morning. I'm about 2 hours away, so I don't know when I'll get there. I'll be there with a friend.
  4. I'm a bit shocked at the hostility in the comments of that first link. What the heck is wrong with some people...
  5. Keith, Hikuro, while you both make excellent points, let's not cause this thread to degenerate into yet another meaningless sub/dub debate. Different people have different preferencs, simple as that. I enjoy subs, and have no problem with those that don't. It's their loss(talking about those who won't watch them even when they're the only option). I just wish dubbing would try harder to convey the original more faithfully. They shouldn't come off as entirely different shows, but I digress. Let's just focus on this and past Macross dubs.
  6. Any way you could post a few of them? It might be interesting to check out.
  7. I can confirm that as well. My dad and I used to assemble WWII aircraft models. All the decals were waterslide. We had quite a few rips.
  8. That's what I heard as well. The commentary for the episode said it would contain most of the cut footage. I'm looking forward to it, but I hadn't heard that the set's supposedly out. I found this however on the Scifi boards. So who knows at this point.
  9. I voted undecided. I usually don't rebuy things unless there's a really good reason, and not just a lame "Making of". I still want to get the first two Animeigo boxes to complete my set as it is. It would just be odd to have 6 or so ADV discs sitting next to them. At least if that set is done, it'll feel right. As it is, I still technically have the first two RT boxes, though they're nowhere near each other. That cover looks nice. It's still a bit weird seeing an ADV logo at the bottom though. I'll probably grab them when the prices fall like most of what they buy, assuming the extras are worth it(mostly that Mari Iijima commentary, though most anime commentaries I've seen are pretty lame).
  10. Heh, leave it to ADV to make so many people reconsider Robotech's casting. The casting in Robotech really wasn't too bad, it's all the lines they added. I did hear Robotech first, so I was used to the voices(even West). I prefer the sub, but the RT voices aren't too bad, and at least have some character, which was common in the bad dubs of the day. Lots of recent dubs lack it. So I'll try to compare it to Robotech and not Macross. Hikaru. So far, he's rather annoying. Though there were a few decent moments(like where he says he's not in the military). If the guy works on it a little, he might be fine. So far, I prefer Oliver. Misa. Sounds like she's trying to hard to sound prissy. Very stiff, and the voice it self just lacks personality. Now I know why I've forgotten most of the VA's roles. Granted, Misa is really strict and uptight early on, but if she sounds entirely like the "Meet the Bridge Bunnies" clip, she's overdoing it. Right now, she just doesn't do it for me. Another RT win so far, though she did sound too old in that one(since they upped her age after all). Minmay. The accent is a tad too thick. Though it does work to a degree. I'll admit that since it is Mari, I'm probably giving it much more slack than if it had been one of ADV's members. Claudia. So far, I'm kind of liking her. She's about par. Roy. I like Dan Woran in the role. I've met him a few times and he's a nice guy. Brett Weaver isn't too bad voice wise. The writing has him sounding a bit off though. Global. I'm glad they didn't give him another thick accent. Aside from over doing it on the laughing, he sounds pretty decent. Bridge Bunnies. Hilary Haag isn't too bad surprisingly. She's thankfully raised her pitch and doesn't sound as nasel. So it's not Nene 2.0. I couldn't hear the others. So far, it's actually not to bad for a ADV dub. They put out a lot of the worst ones in my opinion. Maybe they finally wised up. Now if only they'd fire Steven Foster. I 'm sick of his, "I can change whatever I like and nobody cares so it's ok. Especially since I'm making it better" attitude. Still, I don't double dip, and can't really see myself watching the whole dub. I only have the third box set, so I may wind up with ADV's first few volumes, it depends. It's certainly not great, but it's not the usual travesty that ADV puts out like I was fearing.
  11. Definitely a nice job on the paint and assembly, Anubis. I just picked up a Gundam model myself. I'll probably use the same colors since I like how much it looks on the RX-78-2. Doodler, yours looks great with that armor. Hope to see it done. You've got something great going there.
  12. I was hoping that mentality would work for the Dukes of Hazzard movie.......Boy, was I goddamned wrong... 350585[/snapback] Then we are truly doomed.
  13. That's about it. If it takes itself seriously, it's crap. If it makes fun of itself, it's still crap but at least it might be ok. I liked Devon Aoki in Sin City, she's just absolutely wrong as Kasumi though. Basing a film on another visual media requires that the actors at least look a bit like their characters. She looks nothing like hers. I remember when trailers were supposed to make you want to see a movie, not roll your eyes and groan. There's been why to many lousey ones of late. Either they're like this, or they give the whole film away.
  14. Great news. I met her once before at Fanime, so it will be nice to meet her again after 4 years. I'm definitely going this year.
  15. Very nice looking statue. I like the pose and scupt a lot. Though it's probably too rich for my blood(like a lot of the goodies in this thread I bet). Though, since I'm watching 0083 at the moment, I like it.
  16. Exactly what I was thinking. Though they distincly say Gunbuster. Maybe they're confusing it for the hallway Jung and Kazumi are in in the final episode. Frankly, I think they just didn't know and used the GG reference, even when I pointed it out on their website before it was released as incorrect. For the record GG credited the Pani Poni Missile to Giant Robo. How I don't know. Especially when the whole Robo is considerably Buster themed.
  17. Wow, some awesome figures to get. Anyone watch Pani Poni Dash? Episode 13 has some awesome moments. Though the GG fansubs missed all of them, while Oyasumi caught most. Though they both refer to the cockpit transport is a Gunbuster reference. I'm I forgetting something, or are they both wrong. I know I've seen that sort of of transport device, but not in Gunbuster.
  18. After switching over to a sub preference in 2001, I'm not all that familar with most of ADV's recent stable. Especially given that I can't watch some of their recent dubs like Steel Angel Kurumi due to all the changes they make. My sister still has me watch some though. Though even she's starting to get dissatified. Some names are familar though. Misa - Monical Rial. I'm only really familar with her Hyatt voice, which I liked. I know she's one of their big names now, but I'm just not familar with her work. None of it comes to mind, which tells me she's either largely forgetable, or very good at masking her voice (a talent sadly non-existant in almost all american VAs) Seems like a generic choice. She seems to have the range though, so this is a "wait and see." Roy - Brett Weaver. I actually like his work in some things, notably Sorcerer Hunters. If he tones it down a notch, I could see him in the role. Probably the best choice in the whole list outside Minmay. Shammy - Hilary Haag. Horrible choice. Why do they keep giving her cute characters when she has a very gravelly/nasel voice? She's not bad, but I just can't see this working. Kim - Kira Vicent Davis. I hated her work on Nadesico, and can't remember her in anything else. She might be ok as Kim though. Another "wait and see". Laplamiz - Tiffany Grant. I've actually liked Grant's work in a lot of thing except, ironically, her most known work, Asuka. I can't stand her as Asuka. She should work well. Kakizaki - Jason Douglas. One of my sister's favs, I've liked him in some roles. How he'll do in this remain to be seen. Most of the other choices are names I either don't recognize, or one's I do but can't place. I think of this as a good thing, as I've noticed that I tend to like their unknowns(at least unknown to me). It's the people that are popular that often bug me for whatever reason. In the end, most of the casting isn't bad, except for a few mismarks. Depending on the performances(which tend to be the same from title to title sadly), this could be decent. There's are a few potential good casts. Besides I'm sure most of us will treat it more as a curiousity than a viable viewing option anyway.
  19. My thoughts exactly. Looks like I have a reason to eventually check out this dub. I still wish someone other than ADV was doing it though. I just rarely enjoy their dubs, Hopefully Mari won't be the only highpoint, nor will they get too "creative". It is weird hearing how ADV will by "cleaning up" the sub thpugh. While I suppose it's better than them just rereleasing Animeigo's word for word, I hope they leave it to just those lines. Though they'll probably ditch the honorifics sadly. At least they have one of the guys that worked on the Animeigo sub, IIRC.
  20. Thanks for sharing this. I had a chance one Fanime to check out the Daicon films, but they were showing it really late, so I had to skip them. This was pretty awesome.
  21. Daibuster 4 raw is out. I haven't watched it yet, but have skipped through it. Lot's of interesting stuff it appears.
  22. I've enjoyed what I've seen of it a lot. I haven't seen the Robotech version(closer I've come is that Yellow Dancer concert at AX). I've been meaning to pick it up. Yeah, the Mars Fleet bit was rather odd.
  23. Indeed. Especially since there's no good reason to. It's not like they don't already have a sub track that's better than what they themselves usually put out anyway.
  24. Personally, I'm not too wild about the idea. I just hope ADV does it justice but I'm not to fond of their dubbing usually. Their casting is rarely good. Usually if they work with unknowns, I've noticed that it tends to be better. I'm just tired of hearing the same VAs over and over again. That, and I tend to asociate VAs with characters, since english voices are so recognizable, so it's distracting. I can't watch Last Exile dubbed without think Hellsing(not a good thing). It's part of the reason I prefer subs. Some seiyuu are just bsuperb at changing their voice. I'm just going to finish up collecting the Animeigo set. While a dub might help sell it better, most dub-only fans I've found hate old animation. It's not fluid enough for them. So really, all this does is broaden the market a little. Most of that already comes from the fact that ADV titles get better distro than Animeigo ones, dub aside. I agree with Myriad. At least now there will be an option other than The Macross Saga for those that can't handle subtitles.
  25. Thanks for sharing your story, Mechamaniac, and my condolences on the passing of you friend. I'm a long time Trek fan myself and have been a fan of Shatner for some time. That was indeed a very cool thing for him to do. It is great to know that their are some people who do care.
