Macross Frontier Mecha/Technology Thread *Read 1st post*
Mr March replied to azrael's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Well, it'c clear they are both embracing and diverting from the established nomenclature. The new ship is still labelled Macross 25, like Macross 5 or 7, but it's also called "Frontier" (perhaps as an homage back to SDF-1 "Macross"). The carrier itself is appropriately designated Battle 25, but what should be called City 25 has been completely dropped in favor of "Island 1." A bit of the old and some of the new; a theme likely to be seen throughout Macross Frontier. -

Shonen Ace - Macross Frontier Manga, Chapter 4

Fusion reactors aren't as dangerous as fission reactors we use today. Yes they are both nuclear power, but fusion is a lot safer, cleaner and it does not explode violently if something goes wrong. Plus, we're talking OverTechnology here, which makes it possible for cheap, efficient power to be used even in automobiles in the Macross era. Doubt that would be a concern. -

It wasn't exactly a scientific number. Besides, no one can say what is lying on the cutting room floor. Point being, I'd really appreciate an extended cut. -
I don't mind. I dislike Robotech and refuse to watch or support it. I instead support and promote Macross. But that's just fan opinion. Still, it is very important that you remember this is a Macross website. We do have Robotech fans here and you can share Robotech with them to an extent, but the purpose of this site is to promote Macross and celebrate Macross fandom. It's an important distinction to keep in mind.

Not at all. I'm really ambivalent about the issue. Like I said, it's the nature of editing, which can gain and lose in equal measure. Don't let the typical polarized reaction on MW exaggerate the issue. There is much to enjoy about the broadcast version and the Deculture Edition has some superior sequences as well. Personally, I would really enjoy a 40-45 minute cut with everything included. Macross Frontier almost demands a long cut and it would work well without sacrificing pacing. -

Are you attempting to rationalize the ways of Macross World? Surely not! This is where screams of raped childhoods and lamentations of "small hands! SMALL HANDS!" reign. Reason isn't exactly a virtue here, my foolish little miclone Misa! -
Creatively manipulating something like the VF-1 Valkyrie will get you in hot water because of the exceptional abundance of reference pictures available. In the case of possibly unfavorable fan reaction to your rendition of Isamu's flight suit (something with very little reference available, I say you should take the attitude "Try and do better you damn dirty haters"

I agree that the fans are getting just a little too impatient in this thread, but such is the volunteer life. You get asked for more and more sooner and sooner and you just can't please everyone. I get asked constantly when I'm going to add this or add that to my website and can I do this or can I do that? It's just the nature of the work and you just have to get used to it. Having said that, I really appreciate the fansubbers and their work. Perhaps it is time for an e-mail of thanks or a donation. -
Why thank ya. We aim to please Alas, you've got the totality of everything I have on the suit, backpack and all. The best shot is the cover of "This Is Animation The Select", for which I provided a link on page one of this topic.

I vote this as one of Macross World's all time classic pictures. Bloody brilliant!

Ye gads, have we lost all perspective on this debate? Try using an example that isn't intentionally integrated (and written taking into consideration the size and breadth of communities in those long past ages). Better still, let's maintain focus on more recent history; you know, the kind that relevant to that actual discussion. -

Yeah, I figured you had no clue. Well, write them a letter about level of detail and I'm sure they'll get right on it. And make sure to be specific since they have no idea what they're doing. -
Relations to Previous Series Characters....

That's just it; there is no connection. Macross isn't the adventures of the Belmonts. If it were, we wouldn't be having this discussion. Macross Plus worked brilliantly without such lame character connections. Not saying Macross Plus was as good as it was because of the fact; after all, Macross Zero wouldn't have been greatly improved with Focker gone. But that's beside the point. I can very much expect never to see characters from previous Macross productions again. In fact, I shouldn't. Each story is clearly distinct in both time and setting, such that past characters should realistically be far removed, retired or dead. Of course "stuff" happens all the time, but the Macross animes are obviously focused on the major events; otherwise, why bother? I will grant that in our day and age, it's almost taken for granted that fiction will seek to pat itself on the back with ridiculous character connections that would rarely if ever happen in real life. Such is life and fans have been saturated with it to the point it's almost expected. Mores the pity, I say. I prefer not to see these character connections and hope Macross Frontier goes it's own way. -

Max being captain is totally irrelevant to the point I made. It's the fact of his inclusion, not his position; his appearance/age only made it worse. And yes, the character relations do make the Macross universe feel small and more pointedly contrived. As I stated above, it becomes this silly bubble where nothing notable in the Macross universe occurs unless an cast relation is somehow involved. As for mass cloning, that practice was not as widespread as first intentioned due to hereditary disease and the population was a generation removed from the end of cloning by the time Macross 7 took place. Clones are also never seen in Macross, aside from rogue Zentradi. Now in 2059, genetic diversity would ensure relations would be just as rare as any other population. It's also important to account for the introduction into the gene pool of hundreds of thousands of Zentradi, perhaps millions of Meltrandi and species such as the Zolans. Besides, we know this explanation would be a crutch at best; Kawamori and Co. have stated before their motives for including past characters and it wasn't for cloning continuity purposes. -

Good episode. This is a fine opening to season 4. There's plenty of tense drama and the action was fantastic. Starbuck being a Cylon is way too obvious to be true, IMO. I really liked Tigh's waking dream at command and control. It was very creepy. And dear Gaius; the guy has more harems than dedicated anime It's great to finally see BSG back in action. -

Do you actually know what the budget was for an average episode of Star Trek? It was $1 million per episode. Babylon 5 was $500,000 to $800,000 per episode. Deep Space Nine was $1.6 million per episode. I don't know why, but it seems many don't understand just how tight a budget on which most of these anime shows run. Japan is not the US and anime is not big budget, broad appeal entertainment. Even in Japan, anime is not on the level of popularity that shows like Star Trek would be to American audiences. The two don't even compare. IMO, if people have to pause the show and frame-by-frame to nitpick the visuals, the show obviously isn't holding their attention. I have zero problem with the CG in Macross Frontier but like I said, I recognized it's limitations last year. I'm not sure why this is coming as some surprise to people, but so be it. It's definitely not hurting the show and most people, fan and non-fan alike, have praised the visuals if nothing else. -

Oh yeah, you're right. I'd tend to agree that I think passive stealth is out, but I suppose we can't dismiss the possibility just yet. -

The VF-171 was once again utilizing underwing ordnance, I don't see why the VF-25 wouldn't. According to the entry on the Macross Compendium/Wiki, Kawamori specifically designed the VF-25 to abandon passive stealth, so it makes sense it may use hardpoints again. -
Relations to Previous Series Characters....
Mr March replied to MisaForever's topic in Movies and TV Series
Yes I have and it's called reading too much into it. Ever wonder why people say it's fate/karma/god's will whenever a terrible disaster hits but when incredible good fortune arrives it's always dismissed as chance/random/luck? For every one connection that people think they see in ordinarily random events, there are a million others that happen right under their nose while they remain completely unawares. Connectivity is overstated, even more so in modern fiction because it's a far too often used trend. It diminishes the dramatic value of fiction by turning the diversity of the unknown into a formulaic, predictable occurrence where nothing in the Macross universe can happen unless a relative of the original cast is somehow involved. I am bothered by these silly character connections and I don't want them to appear again. So far it seems like Macross Frontier is going it's own way and I hope it stays that way. Homages are fine. Direct lineages are not. Might as well start writing evil twin and time travel stories in Macross. -
