Looking sharp. Nice work.

Revoltech was made for this kind of mecha. What a beautiful figure. Simply brilliant.

That's just speculation at this point. We have no way of knowing for sure and neither BG nor Kawamori have said anything about it. -

Oh, just look at all the potential text goodness. There has to be some good mecha trivia and maybe a few more statistics hidden in there. I can see many english numbers and terms like SMS scattered throughout. I hope someone can translate *gets ready to copy and paste for potential M3 profiles* -

I will say this (as a Macross fan who dislikes Robotech, so take my opinion for what it's worth); the historical significance of Robotech in helping to popularize anime in North America is set. Right or wrong, Robotech helped put anime on the map for NA children of the 80's. Yet granting Macek, HG and Robotech their due credit (begrudgingly), I think far too many older anime fans exaggerate the importance of Robotech in the grand scheme of things. Robotech was popular, it did help popularize anime "in it's time" and yes, there is a significant nostalgia following to this day. But that's pretty much all it is; a nostalgia following. Robotech followed up it's popularity with virtually nothing. An ill-conceived bargain bin sequel, a few wasted efforts and RPG games and finally long years of absolutely nothing. Even to this day fans are fed Shadow Chronicles; a mediocre show using decade old CGI and 20 year old mecha designs. Not exactly innovative, imaginative product. Robotech was no where to be found during the next great push for anime in North America, post-1980s. It was Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Ninja Scroll, Gundam Wing, Ghost in the Shell and (ironically) Macross Plus along with a host of other such titles that sent North American anime into the 1990's era of far greater popularity. Only after the fact was a sequel finally released. Robotech was never the "Major pop culture icon of anime" that fans like to claim. It never spawned new NA animation or influenced later works. It didn't advance the art form of NA animation or spark a new creative movement. It didn't create a new business model or become the blockbuster birth for anime. Every indication counts it as a fad, an important fad, but a fad nonetheless. The vast majority of current anime fandom doesn't even know Robotech and has never seen it, in contrast to the awareness fans have for true pop culture icons of their respective art forms. Having said all that, I will agree that live and let live is the best policy. I just want my Macross and to hell with Robotech. The resentment from Macross fans, as Zinjib so accurately wrote above, stems from the fact that HG couldn't see fit to do the same. -
Who can debate aesthetics? Not really an argument that leads to any conclusion, IMO. As for the Megaroad itself, it's not a dedicated warship. It's not supposed to fulfill all the functions of the SDF-1. It's primary purpose is long-distance colonization, transporting a civilian population that has to remain happy and comfortable aboard ship for years if necessary. These colony ships are intergalactic cruise vessels, not dedicated combat craft. Battle is why a combat fleet escorts the ship. Even the New Macross class vessels were less than ideal combat craft. Sure they have the big gun, but little else remains. Four anti-ship cannons are the only other weapons; gone are the big beam cannons, point defense guns, artillery cannons, missile launchers and destroid units. The New Macross class is far from the battleship that is the SDF-1. I find it no surprise that the colony ships are compromised in combat. They aren't meant to do serious fighting. A military builds colony ships to move colonists, with some defenses just in case. But they spend their real military resources on real military ships, which are sent along as escort should the worst happen. That's really all anyone can do, modern military, or advanced space-faring civilization

ZinjaNinja It is indeed quite colorful. I tried to capture as much of the color from the anime as I could, without overwhelming the color scheme in an excessive forest of lights. I think all the lights were meant to create a sense of scale and show that the Megaroad was one enormous vessel of great size. But it's also important not to drown out the detail of the line art, so it's moderated in my version. I agree the Macross Frontier shot is great. It appeared more grey, almost blue in a way. So I just stuck with a grey tinged with blue-purple and I think it looks good. RDClip As Gubaba has pointed out, it's possible the forward booms are super dimension energy cannons. Keep in mind that the Megaroad is many, many times larger than the SDF-1 Macross (Megaroad is over 5,000 meters long, the SDF-1 is 1,200 meters long). If the size of the SDF-1 cannons were maintained to scale they would be almost the exact size of the Megaroad's forward booms. Even if the Megaroad doesn't have the main guns, it's very likely it was armed with anti-ship weaponry. VFTF1 The "glass" is only called such to assist understanding. Logic would tell us it's not possible for a space craft that large to be using a simple glass hull. How could something as brittle as glass maintain any structural strength spread across a ship so large? How would glass survive the vibrations, stress and heat of acheiving orbit or rentry? How could glass survive micrometeorite impacts or collisions with slow moving object and ships? We have no choice but to assume the glass is some kind of transparent material with properties of structural strength far superior to glass. From the events of the anime series, it's clear this theory also makes sense. The domes are rarely penetrated from mecha weaponry. In Macross Frontier, the Red Vajra had to fire it's main gun (which was previous seen as a powerful anti-ship beam weapon) at point blank range just to blast a hole large enough for itself to get into City 25. I think it's safe to say the "glass" is quite sturdy even though it's not meant to repel dedicated attacks. That's what the armored shell is for; a shell that is never deployed in time to stop the baddies...lol

Being introduced by Robotech is not necessarily the same thing as that which made you a Macross fan. It may have been for some, but not me. I saw Robotech first as well, but had long since abandoned it because it didn't hold my interest. It was very weak when seen as an adult and didn't hold up that well at all. It was Macross Plus that got me back into Macross. That made me go after the original SDF Macross series (Animeigo pre-order, baby!) and more of the sequels. If it weren't for Macross Plus, it's likely I wouldn't have got back into Macross at all. -

Zinjiderling Me too. I also like the sense of an interior atmosphere and the feel of depth. It makes a big difference once in color. Mark Nguyen That's the real problem. The whole point of adding color in this manner is to add depth and atmosphere. The lighter glass doesn't look as good IMO. Or at least, it doesn't look as interesting. Real is good; interesting is better. When I was experimenting I tried all kinds of colors, shades and brushes versus solids. They all came out looking "liquid" to one degree or another. There's also the fact that a slightly different colored glass helps distinguish the glass from the interior city. Nonetheless, I'll post one of my other earlier experiments: LIGHT GLASS Megaroad-01 charger69 Yes, some of the areas are meant to be a silver-ish white. The anime itself actually alternates these sections; sometimes white, sometimes gold. I chose which sections seem to remain constant in most of the anime shots. There are clearly white sections on the ship and they should be accounted for, hence the corrections I added to this new version.

Since it seems a popular subject, I started this Megaroad thread to avoid going off topic on the Macross Frontier Tech thread. Just to recap:

Whoops, kinda strayed off topic. Back to M Frontier tech -
That was certainly the whole point of making the Megaroad-01 vanish. The original Macross story and those characters will forever remain immortalized; we'll never know what happened in the end so we can only remember the fond memories of the story and the characters as they were

DT Me too. At least we got a new beauty shot (was it a CG model?) shown in Macross Frontier. Zinjelina Thanks for the comments. Indeed the main hull color was given just a bit more grey than before. I notice that a lot of the pictures in the magazines, particularly older magazines, have an annoying tendency to over-saturate the true colors. It's something I try hard to judge on a case-by-case basis. Sometimes I have to revisit past color schemes and adjust them. This new Megaroad turned out so well, I've already re-done the domes on the Macross 5, the Macross 7 and the Riviera Class Resort Ship. They all look brilliant now. Mark Nguyen A good point. It's possible some modifications may yet be made. Though I think most of what we see in the Deculture edition is going to stay. Just a guess. -
"Direct sequel" is not a very applicable term in Macross, since time lines always jump significantly between installments, as do settings and characters. Flashback 2012, Macross Plus, Macross 7 and Macross Frontier would all be relevant sequels to SDF Macross. DYRL? is a retelling/reimagining of SDF Macross, Macross II is a sequel to DYRL? (and was ultimately set outside the official chronology and designated a parallel universe) and Macross Zero is a prequel that takes place before SDF Macross (though technically the events of M0 after take place after back story has been told of the alien ship crash landing on Earth).

Awesome new scan. There is no doubt I'm buying one of these. I love the scale with the VF-1J.

Graham Yeah, you definitely have priorities that should take precedence over the scanner thing. Plus, it's just a judgment call on your part about the image quality in the magazines too. I can't say one way or the other if it's worth a new scanner if the source images in the magazine are crap. Even a good scanner won't help in that case. It's just that looking at all the scans you done for the year and doing scanning myself, it seems like the scanner is not very good quality, even compared to a cheapy like mine. Regardless, your old scanner is getting the job done, so like I said, we can't complain Sulendil Ang Oh, the most spiteful of desires for which I yearn that you cannot know! Zinjack*** is my most hated archenemy on this message board. I find him extremely ugly. He emits a foul and unpleasant odor. I LOOOOOOATHE HIM!!!! It has long been my most coveted goal to one day rip the reigns of Macross World power from the clutches of Shawn and Graham to achieve but ONE end: the total and utter destruction, in tar and feathers, of that most putrid pond scum that is known only in the most blackest of words as...Zinjo! I will have his heart on a plate! His head on my desk! I will have him stripped naked and whipped through the streets of the capital at midday! Oh yes, my dearest onlookers, Zinjo's pancreas will be mine! MWUHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAaaaaa..... *cough, gag, choke* -

Hehehe These latest boots look great. Actually, you're in luck if you need some reference for the feet, because there are several shots in Macross Plus showing Isamu's boots in action piloting the YF-19. I believe it's early in the OVA series (might even be in the movie version as well). I'm not sure if it shows the arch and forward foot bends, but it definitely shows the ankle bends. If you ever get stuck and need some help, you should try deviantART. I've found many a good tutorial on that site from time to time and there are lots of friendly members.

They call them "Feet" Looking good, but the boot toe seems to be a little too big. I think the top of the boot toe is flush with the top of the boot, as seen in the line art. Still, this is coming along great. I love the look.
