Yes, the doujinshi possibilities are even better than Frontier. The next Comiket should be epic.

I think that's when the series will come into its own- when we start seeing Delta porn instead of Frontier porn.

Thumbs up on the gertalk series. Nice to hear Delta being discussed in line with the shows. I usually wait till I've seen the subbed version, unlike Renato, I do need scrubs, err, subs.

Question, how are your guys across the other "pond" seeing the general population take to Delta?

How would you say it's catching on versus say, the latest Gundam series or Kabaneri, for example?

Is it a certainty whether it will be a "hit" or "miss" in your collective experience?

Obviously I'm hopeful for the former, but I wasn't tuning in realtime when Frontier came out so I don't have a frame of reference, and I'm also stateside.

Personally, I am avoiding the SpoilerCast until the series is over, to form my own opinions. But can't wait to binge listen when it's all over.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Mazinger, we decided to answer your question on the air, so to speak. Hope you don't mind.

And with that, let's talk Delta Episode 6!

http://www.macrossworld.com/speakerpodcast-ep-45-macrossΔ-ep-6-spoilercast/

Thanks again for these Delta Gertalk Podcasts. They're both entertaining and insightful.

Hopefully the series continues inspiring all of you to put these together for those of us not as familiar with the Macross universe.

The time and effort involved is truly appreciated.

Another great episode fellas...it's greatly appreciated. Can any of you shed a bit more light about the ratings?

The first CD single seems to be doing well (#1 on Amazon Japan, AmiAmi, and apparently iTunes).

I saw some tracking numbers on 4chan for the first BD/DVD so take this with a bit of salt. Apparently it's tracking well over the 10k-12k range.

I know English subtitles were confirmed for the first disc in the series, but do you know if they've been confirmed for the second disc (or remaining discs)?

99.9% sure the entire series will be English subbed.

It wouldn't make sense for them to provide it for the first then just drop it. That's just bad business practice...either provide it or don't.

Listeners of the last SpeakerPODcast episode: Regarding the popularity of Delta and how it compares to other big hitters like Osomatsu-san... Well, look at what has just been revealed. Osomatsu is on the cover of An-an. This is huuuge. An-an is a fashion magazine with great historical importance in terms of the rise of youth culture in Japan in the 60s, 70s and 80s. Absolutely nothing compares to this!

https://www.amazon.co.jp/anan-%E3%82%A2%E3%83%B3%E3%82%A2%E3%83%B3-2016%E5%B9%B4-5%E6%9C%8818%E6%97%A5%E5%8F%B7-No-2003-%E9%9B%91%E8%AA%8C-ebook/dp/B01F1W8WRY?ie=UTF8&camp=1207&creative=8411&creativeASIN=B01F1W8WRY&linkCode=shr&qid=1462922223&redirect=true&ref_=tmm_kin_swatch_0&sr=1-1&tag=ceeaa-22

Haha, that's OK, An-an has had some really racy covers in the past, for all the perceived conservative image of mainstream Japanese society, it's actually really quite boundary-breaking. Cover stories about healthy sex life with tasteful nudes are popular with women here, which may be surprising to some. I have never, ever seen anime characters on the cover, though. This is unprecedented, and prolific anime critic and writer Yuichiro Oguro has already stated that this is epoch-making, and people will be talking about this for years to come. Now that the precedent is set, I would like to see more such things, like Delta, for instance, make the leap towards more visibility.

The discussion, particularly your (Renato's) comments on anime consumption came as a surprise. No doubt that was more to my lack of familiarity with actual Japanese life, than the image I've formed in my mind having grown up with giant robots and ninja science teams.

On the other hand, mecha anime is still getting made, and for that I'm grateful. You guys began to touch on streaming and that's interesting because it's impacting everything, everywhere at once. Hopefully, it will help Macross and anime in general bloom.

Very true.

Also curious to see how many episodes end up on the second disc. I believe the first disc contains the first three episodes (as well as .89).

If the second disc also has three episodes, I think that'd be a good indication the entire run will be 27 episodes.

Well, it's sort of a counter-intuitive phenomenon from a Western perspective, because there is more anime actually being made now than at any other point, but until very recently, it has all been relegated to late-night time slots, meaning they are geared towards pre-existing anime fans. It still remains to be seen just how much of a game-changer streaming will be, but having anime merchandise and events gradually appear around town is something that has been becoming more and more prevalent.

One concern is that, although there are now numerous streaming platforms like Bandai Visual, D-anime Store, PSN, etc., the major ones are actually based outside Japan: Crunchyroll, Hulu, Netflix, Amazon... They are aggressively moving into the anime market and going beyond simple licensing and now entering co-production negotiations. This means that they are beginning to consider tailoring content for the overseas market. Obviously this is not the first time this has happened (Kimba the White Lion, Ghost in the Shell, etc.), nor will it affect Macross immediately because of you-know-who, but it will probably change some things, fairly rapidly, I imagine.

Sorry this is starting to go a little off-topic :p

Maybe, but it's a really interesting discussion. Like Mazinger, I'm surprised at what you guys said, for exactly the reasons you just brought up. I'm seeing more and more anime in production, and it is, if anything, having a resurgence in the US. It's still definitely a niche, but it's a much more public and noticeable niche these days. Otakon (Baltimore/DC based anime and manga convention) is one of the biggest cons each year, with attendance numbers rivaling the auto show here.

Maybe it's just the mainstreaming of nerd culture in general here, and eventually there will be a backlash that pushes it all back to the margins someday, but in the meanwhile I hope anime continues to get enough support to thrive. Too much good content!

Renato, i think it is hard for us who have never visited Japan to actually understand this issue. We always hear and read that anime is a sub-culture and not really part of the mainstream in Japan. We read that anime fans are called derogatory names, etc. At the same time, this seems contradicted by images we see of Japanese youth and adults carrying their manga on the subway and akihabara scenes. And everyone I ever met from Japan loves Heidi, Totoro and Yamato. So, it seems to me there is fine line between what is mainstream and what is not which we cannot understand from afar.

So my question is, what would qualify as really sub-culture in Japan? Is it any type of mecha sci-fi anime like Macross, or is it something more like Moe, etchi, loli, or Hentai which is clearly looked down upon in the mainstream?

Even my question seems contradicted by all that we hear about nudity being TOTALLY NORMAL in Japan, which I find hard to believe given its conservative society. I'm sure you've heard that response on the web hundreds of times, when someone questions nudity or etchi in anime, and the response is, "You clearly don't understand the cultural differences".

Would be good to hear actual feedback from someone on the ground.

During the Gertalk Podcast for Delta episode 7, I believe MW member Save mentioned a card advertising the Blu-ray/DVD release was handed out at the Walkure event over the weekend. That card listed the English subtitles too, so 99.9% sounds about right. :)

Thanks for mentioning that Save!

Finally was able to hear one of your podcasts in it's entirety. Good job guys, thanks.

I'm surprised to hear from you that there's early indications that this might be as popular as Frontier was. I guess it'll all be revealed when that first BD goes on sale.

The bit about Patrick Stewart lifting the little baby made me spit out my beverage in laughter.

Well, it will take me a while to get a really in-depth answer out and I have to leave in a minute, but it has to do with group dynamics in Japanese society. In the West, subcultures eventually grow and permeate the mainstream, whereas in Japan, they tend to gather momentum on their own and develop into a really deep core group, always keeping a distance from the mainstream. So there is always a gap in between the two. That's partly why we couldn't measure the popularity of Delta last week, such as there is such a measurable variable. However, on occasions where these groups do have some interaction with the mainstream, such as the Mini Concert, the magnitude of the core fandom is really palpable. At the same time, I overheard a couple with a small child passing through this chaos, who clearly just wanted to do some shopping, saying, "Macross? What's Macross? Do you know?" "Nah... never heard of it" and they walked off. Not only does the subculture not really interact much with mainstream culture, but the mainstream is also dismissive of it. And that has to do partly with population demographic breakdown, but now I'm really pushed for time, sorry!

As popular as Frontier? Well... Here's a photo of the crowd for the so-called "MINI CONCERT" on Saturday (official photo by Victor Entertainment).

THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING!!!

This kind of happened at the Shizuoka Hobby Show. We (VF-1 Riders) were next to the Bandai team, and they had a bunch of PG Unicorns on display. Kids would see our stuff, kind of "meh", then get huge eyed at the Gunpla display.

Very hyped to hear you guys (and Sarah) talk about the traction this is getting.

I'll say this here, since it came up. I'm also in the "Makina's reaction warheads are unnecessary" camp. I understand that it it definately appeals to many anime fans, but to me it's a distraction from the plot and character development.

Can't wait till the proper concert later this year. Hopefully footage will be available on teh intertubes.

Amazing crowd at the mini-concert.

It amazes me how much kids go for Gundam, though. I believe its purely from the marketing and merchandising effort behind it.

Come on!

Macross is so much more fun!

Thanks for the response. Please elaborate when you have time. Your perspective is valuable because I think most people on the web who have written hundreds of opinions about Japanese Culture and Anime have actually never been there more than a few days.

Here's a question for everyone on the podcast that might have to wait until next week's Delta episode; who do you think is the worst spy/infiltrator in the franchise up to now? Not sure if Freyja was really trying this week, especially with her rune sticking out for everyone to see. However, Warera, Rori and Konda, well, you know. I vaguely remember them somehow stealing a sentient vending machine from the Macross for some reason?
