Robotech and HG License Debates

Over 12 hours and no criticism of RT on this thread. (or any discussion at all for that matter). Is this a record or have we finally run out of steam?

That's not true.

From my experience most Palladium fans are pretty loyal to the system dispite it's numerous short comings. The old saying can't teach old dogs new tricks is true.

Do a lot of people still play the RPG version of Robotech? If the gaming system doesn't work well and such, the fandom's making it worse if they buy it out of misplaced loyalty. I don't know how table top RPGs work, but at least it should be fun even with those statistics and dice rolling.

So, who bought the Southern Cross reissued book and how was it?

Everything have been discussed already. I guess there's nothing more to add. :(

I will admit, there's only so many times one can prove the ignorance of the "RT" staff. While each one of them has a their shortcomings, I think the person who really makes it show for the staff there is Kevin. I've never seen someone in any type of "PR" position misrepresent (on hold/hiatus drama), and buckle under simple fan questioning. Even in the poor fashion they are working in, at least Tommy is trying in his own warped and sad way.

the staff over there remind me of the Beverly Hillbillies...they're just 3 guys out of their league, don't belong, and everyone can see it, but there they are. It doesn't bother me one bit, I do find it funny. While not expecting anything to happen, it would be nice if the LAM either gives WB a push to buy the franchise, or does poorly, and HG takes their franchise further into obscurity to where it disappears. Either way, it's time for something different already.

Is it just me, or do any of you think that HG has done more of a disservice to the fans by what they've done with holding off Macross from coming here? Even if BW doesn't want to deal with HG, there's a reason, and more than likely has to do with backdoor business decisions, and lots of burned bridges. I dunno, just my gut feelings over that whole issue. Even when I was a part of their website, I always felt like that was really a stick in the back of RT fans.

Didja ever notice that although male and female Zentradi are s'pposed to be, y'know, seperate, the soldier in Episode 12 who tells Miriya that her Q-Rau is ready is A GUY???

Boy, I hope someone got fired over that one... ;)

Maybe there were really manly females on testosterone pills in the female fleet. I dunno, I'm just thinking like a typical Robotech fan, trying to justify it.

I think so, but as a business I don't think HG even cares what they're doing now. Despite talking about Protoculture flowers, grand space opera stories, and that "We Will Win" attitude they push forward, their big concern is to make money in any way possible. Unfortunately, their methods of getting it is pretty underhanded and frugal, but in economics money is money. It's fair game if they turn Robotech into a Macross/Battlestar Galactica/Gundam/Transformers/etc. clone, carefully avoiding legal issues, and it helps Robotech become profitable with the times. It helps that Robotech is defined by a vaguely detailed mythology explained in another media, but passed off or even ignored entirely with creative narrative/animation "techniques." Also, we've seen fans will buy anything they say at this point, maybe since the beginning too, so another huge advantage for them. They're just going along for the ride, which most likely will end down a huge cliff in the future.

On that note, it's hard to find info on what happened at recent Robotech convention panels even from the official site and their twitter. Even if you get to meet staff from the show and free stuff, it's a moot point to go to a $15-$50 convention and have a history lesson about Robotech rather than get useful news about where it's going every time.

Well, she's got breasts...she just has a man's voice. So maybe her larynx got shot out during a battle, and the only spare they had to replace it with originally belonged to a guy.

They did the same thing in the Robotech movie when they used Southern Cross footage with Dana.

I'd be really curious to see the RT demographics. How many new fans are they puling in? How many teenagers and college students? How many anime fans? How many SF fans?

I mean, at MW, we've got a large number of old-timers how got into Macross in early-to-mid '80s, but we've also got a not-inconsiderable amount of younger and newer fans, and Frontier brought in a lot more.

Does RT do the same? I really don't know.

I will say that HG was really, really smart to get RT out to South America and China. I'm pretty sure that's what's been keeping RT afloat for the past ten or fifteen years...

Frontier probably brought new people to Robotech too because of its, now-denied, association with Macross. Who knows what the numbers are besides what you hear from the website and convention reports if people cared to write about it. However, the story behind the making of Robotech could be the make or break moment for new fans.

If Frontier is your first introduction to Macross, then my guess is you end up with ADV's Macross releases instead of Robotech.

Even if Frontier beings you to everything in Macross, the more you learn about it the more likely you'll find out about Robotech somewhere down the road, just because of its loose association rather than a genuine interest in it. You know how curious fans are these days finding out everything they can about a series. I was kind of underwhelmed finding out about Robotech beyond the cartoon, and then a huge retcon happened and replaced the original BS in the expanded universe with BS that will never end.

I saw this on another board. I think it sums up their system pretty well, "The worst RPG system ever? Can I blanket say 'anything with a class system'? The worst system I've ever used personally would be Palladium - class-based, but ALSO with a hideous skill system, a hopelessly unbalanced yet over-complex combat system and the worst writing quality and editing ever (each edition would correct some errors and INTRODUCE MORE)."

So, who bought the Southern Cross reissued book and how was it?

Clearly it was utter trash because it didn't include the Slyphide veritech fighter that we all know is there! Or at least that's what hardcore Southern Cross fans think.

Perhaps in small numbers. Most anime fans who watch Macross Frontier either know Japanese or watch fansubs. They no doubt will learn of Robotech's existence through wikipedia or googling Macross, but they won't care to watch a "disloyal English dub" of Macross labelled as Robotech now that Macross is easily available subbed. Besides most of the young anime fans I know simply REFUSE to watch any pre-90s anime because it just just doesn't appeal to them visually.

Aww, that joke actually makes sense from Robotech now; Bird-Human Protoculture death machine -> energy phoenix thing the Regis bug queen turned into. The wings make them absolutely related.

Did it also explain that the Vajra's are an offshoot of the Invids? And that the Regent was fooling around with the Vajra queen (along with a harem of lesser Vajra queens) behind the Regess' back? ^_^

Give them enough time and fans will make it work. Carl Macek made the whole thing subjective since the beginning anyway, so they're just following tradition.

Not really, no.

Apart from a few small groups on RPOL and Palladium's message boards, there doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in actually playing the RPG. A lot of the fans I've talked to have either purchased the book to use it as a sort of tech manual. Most of those who actually bought the books with the intent to play the game can't find enough interested fans in their immediate area to get a game started.

So, who bought the Southern Cross reissued book and how was it?

I didn't buy it, but I borrowed a copy from someone gullible enough to send out for it (the local bookstores won't stock it because they know it won't sell) and it seems to be pretty much a retread of the old books, with the MDC values adjusted and a fair bit of mediocre new lineart.

And yet again, that's the big problem, right?

Robotech really has no identity separate from its component parts. Or, rather, it does, but that identity is dependent on the original series.

But with the fans trying to add other series into the mix to make new Robotech (or even just fantasizing about it)...well, if its done humorously (like Robotech III: Not Necessarily the Sentinels), I usually like it. But if someone thinks about doing it seriously (like a member here was a few pages ago), then I think it's just kinda...well, imagination-impoverished.

Oh, I'm ridiculing the whole practice too Gubaba.

THE HELL YOU SAY, ROBOTECH-LOVER!!!

Nah, I know you are.

But as I've mused before...it *is* weird that RT is (as far as I know) the only series that causes fans to rummage through other series for raw material.

Sure, some people will see something like, say, the 08th MS Team and say, "Man! They should do a Macross series like THAT!" But few would say, "Man! They should buy that show and cleverly redub it so it BECOMES a Macross series!"

As I said, I think Robotech III: Not Necessarily the Sentinels is HYSTERICAL, because taking something like Gunbuster and saying that Noriko is Annie, Amano is Minmay, and the Coach is Rick is sublimely ludicrous (my favorite, however, is Noriko's friend, "Vanessa Prime"). But there are a lot of people who wanted (and some who still want) Macross II to become RT. Some were also fantasizing about Frontier.

This is the problem HG faces right now...not only do they have to make an original RT sequel, they also have to compete against the Macross sequels, which have higher budgets and better creative staff.

Yes, even Macross 7.

More like they don't even have the in-house facilities to make sequels without paying a premium compared to their competitors. And at the moment they've burned enough bridges to be unable to get the "authentic" Robotech feel fans want.

Nah, there was no mention of the Vajira just the tale of the Bird-humans (first Invid) doing it with the fish people on some Mayan Island. Is there any other series beside Robotech and Macross that has so much sex between aliens and humanity? The universe's best energy source Protoculture, must also be the universal Viagra.

That must be why humanity was literally caught with there pants down by the Invid. Its all thanks to all those Protoculture aphrodisiac spores and a new population of hot Zor aka "Robotech Masters" that came in triplets! Its no wonder the Masters Saga ended so abruptly, there was just no way for Carl Macek to censor out all those Inter-species orgies that must started after the spread of Protoculture!

How to we know your really not Robotechfanplus? Maybe your suffering from MOP (Multiple Online Personalities)? For all we know you could be a A.I. that has gone emotional and suffers from a Fan Love Triangle between Macross and Robotech as you plot to take over the world.
