I know this topic way predates my lurker days on thr forum, but I've always wondered why this topic is in the Toys forum.  Toynami operates under a HG Robotech license, so shouldn't this be under the "Anime or Science Fiction" section?  Just curious, it doesn't really bother me. :unknw:

It may be because in the early releases, they did do Macross movie stuff. Only a few though. But yeah mostly Robotech

Basically grandfathered in somehow before people were willing to follow "rules"...

This is the "Macross" toy section (actually anything within the OverTechnology Think Tank header should be exclusively Macross-only), so yes, technically it should reside within the Anime or Science Fiction threads....I believe other "Robotech" lines, such as KitzConcept were properly created within the "Non-Macross" threads....

The same could be said for other topics, such as the "look how much I spent in toys today" thread......should only be Macross acquisitions posted there, but it morphed into a free-for-all due to the lack of good moderating....

Really interesting thread, especially that some of the original posters were toy designers. thinking about collecting a complete collection this series, they make nice display pieces while not taking a ton of shelf space.

So it's not lineart "accurate" but I'm fairly certain no one who is buying this cares about that...as they say...SIZE MATTERS...

If the recent 1/20 VF-1 kits would have been sold as "pre-built action figures" I probably still would have bought this big boy...it has a cool nostalgic, old school vibe that lineart accuracy cannot deliver, it's like a super-sized Takatoku Large Vinyl VF-1 Battroid...

large.20200426_220638.jpg.ffb4f4b35685a3

....I am not sure if I will keep collecting these as the MSRP is seriously hurting my capacity to rationalize collecting anymore in this line and I know they will probably release at least the already teased VF-1J "Rick"...and likely the Max and Milia VF-1Js...what's another 1000+ dollars?.....in the end, the completist beast residing in me may ultimately prove...once again...it's uncanny power over rational thought....with any luck, they will at least space out the realeses at 1 per year...

Anyway...one small "nitpick"....supposedly, this is the "Robotech" TV version....if so, they painted the arrows on the sides of the head unit yellow, instead of black...I do not have my "Macross" SDCC 2023 Edition on hand yet, but I believe that one has the arrows painted black..and I assume is also a TV version....would have been better to have painted the "Macross" version with yellow arrows so it could have been an "unoffcial" DYRL version....again, just a nitpick....I guess the "Robotech" version is an unofficial "anime" color DYRL version....

The best episode of SDFM TV!

I don't recall any episode with Max's valk gearing up skies and a flame thrower? 🤣

But isn't that picture from a 80s model kit magazine?

Not to derail the thread...but just wanted to point out the name of the illustrator of that particular image....Masami Watanabe.....imo, the mostly unknown third member of what I consider the trio of illustrators that define the art of the SDFM era....Masami even worked and is suspected of being responsible for many of the toy and kit boxart....unfortunately, he hardly ever receives any credit....even the recent Macross boxart book, as far as I know, doesn't credit him for any of the boxart...

My hope has been that some artbook could be published that would collect his unique illustration style, which covers several anime series beyond Macross, but it seems as if his memory will continue to be lost in time...

The Google Translate app is pretty good at translating these type of magazines....

You're right, haven't tried it yet, but here's the first time.

That is so heart warming, yet sad at the same time. I wish companies would make more this obscure schemes than the usual heroes and credit the original artists... but I know, not possible.

To me, the biggest difference visually is the box...with the big Macross logo....the figure itself seems to be slightly more off white....not much else to say....the biggest gimmick is obviously its size....

....one other thing I thought about as I looked at it...would they dare do a Jumbo SDF-1? Destroids? A TV N-Ger? This line is already expensive with a single release....
