  1. No. When the new VOTOMS box set was announced years ago, it was stated it would be dubbed. But it disappeared off the radar for more than a year, and the new box set out now is subbed only. I guess CPM figured there was no need to spend money dubbing such an old series that would have limited retail appeal.
  2. If you really like gritty, militaristic real robot shows from the early 1980s, VOTOMS is for you. It's got a great story, good mecha designs, and an atmosphere completely different from the standard "genki teenager accidentally becomes robot pilot" shows. I've reviewed the whole series, along with the side story Mellowlink. Read some reviews to get an idea about the show, but don't read too much to spoil yourself. By the way, if you pick up the first new collection, which covers the Uoodo City arc, you'll find it's the weakest part of the show. Not to say it's bad, but the rest of the arcs are far better. 3. According to Macross Compendium, Kawamori wrote the last episode of SDF Macross under the pen name Eiji Kurokawa. http://macross.anime.net//production/creat...hoji/index.html
  4. I think Kawamori is still top notch as a mechanical designer. I have no complaints about how he directs. Macross Zero had some great mecha battles, and Kawamori also did fine co-directing Plus and DYRL. My beef with Kawamori is his storytelling. I don't care if the man has had spiritual epiphanies - more power to him. But I don't want to watch an anime that serves a mouthpiece for him to go on at length about how fragical the Earth is and whatever else he wants to talk about. Even if he was hellbent on doing it once, that's fine, but it's a theme that keeps crawling into more and more of his projects. Personally, I would like to see Noboru Ishiguro come back and direct a new Macross project, be it a movie, OVA or TV show. Let Kawamori be a 'consultant', but mainly keep him to mecha designs only like in Eureka Seven.
  5. Years ago I watched an encoded raw of the first episode. Looked very interesting. It's a shame nobody subbed it, but it is really old and quite long, so it's not surprising.
  6. I could think of a lot of shows, but one comes up at the very top of my list - MD Geist. I made the mistake of watching it about 10 years ago when I was first getting into anime. It was so damn bad that I almost stopped watching anime entirely.
  7. Having seen the whole show, I can say it's very much hit-or-miss. The series begins by throwing you into the story, and you feel like it's the middle of the series rather than the first episode. Very little about the world, characters, or stories is explained, and the ending is quite bizarre. Also, as a Tomino series, it's very heavy on "Tominoisms", even moreso than Gundam. That means you can expect lots of teenage angst directed at problems with parents. On the other hand, the series was one of Tomino's better efforts at handling romance. The romance between the two main characters slowly develops over the course of the series and doesn't feel like something that was slapped on. The series also has some fantastic music by Yoko Kanno, which is about the best thing I can say about the show. My advice: if you're going to watch it, definitely rent first rather than buy.
  8. The development team said they decided not to include Victory because there had already been such a huge technological jump between CCA and F91. However, some Victory units are in the game as secret unlockables. If anything, I'd guess just the Victory and V2.
  9. For me, the best animation is "Love Drifts Away" (episode 27). The characters are on model, and all the mecha look great. Plus, you can't beat exploding little girls.
  10. C'mon guys, the movie doesn't come out until May 2007, but we're complaining already? I know the Sony site says it's a black costume, but it doesn't really look that way. My first impression is that everything is just dark and in grays for dramatic effect.
  11. One thing to keep in mind is that the original EMS-04 Zudah was produced to compete with the MS-05 Zaku I. This is at the very dawn of the mobile suit era in UC, so you're obviously going to have defective designs. It's no different from those old films you see on cable about weird airplane designs from the early 1900s blowing up and crashing. Quality control on an early suit like the Zudah isn't going to be up to the level of stuff from Zeta or Victory.
  12. Lee is the logical choice for several reasons. One, we know from experience that you can't send Tigh over there because he'll just screw everything up. Two, you can't have that ship commanded by rotating guest commanders, so you have to have one of the established cast members do it.
  13. I guess you haven't seen Enemy at the Gates then? You should have a look at it...it's a great sniper vs sniper movie. On the subject of an MGS movie, I think it could work. The story of the original MGS1/Twin Snakes would translate well to a movie, if tweaked properly. Sure, you have to make some changes to make a movie dramatic, but that doesn't mean raping the original source material (as every video game adaptation has done up to now). In the hands of the right director and writer, MGS could be fantastic. Thank god it's not Uwe Boll.
  14. It is the Red Frame. The Gelgoog-like armor it's equipped with is called the "Mars Jacket". This all came up since Lowe and the ReHOME went to Mars at the beginning of DESTINY ASTRAY.
  15. None of those have been licensed in the U.S. However, I would expect TOKYOPOP to license X ASTRAY and DESTINY ASTRAY at some point this year. Given their slow release schedule, we probably wouldn't see any product until the end of this year or early 2007. I'll note that the DESTINY manga adaptation has been licensed by Del Rey, but it's not the same thing as The Edge. Maybe it's just me, but The Edge strikes me as rather pointless. What's the need to see the series from Athrun's perspective if he already has so much screen time in the series?
  16. I would certainly hope so. Given ADV's close relationship with Harmony Gold, I would expect them to pick up any of Manga's Macross products if they expired. But before that, I'm still holding out hope for DYRL...
  17. Three have been released so far, but it'll be a total of 6 episodes. The remaining three episodes are being marketed under the subtitle "Apocalypse 0079", and the first of those episodes will be out in April on DVD in Japan.
  18. I'm not sure I understand the point of this topic. Is it somehow wrong for a mecha comedy show to have homages to Macross?
  19. It wasn't anything sinister at all. She said in the past that she gave him information for his research. After mentioning the nuke, she told him he could "figure out the rest himself". And he did, when he came up with that explanation of why he needed it.
  20. Don't punish all of Gundam just because of SEED. Until SEED, the most clip shows Gundam ever had was two in Wing. SEED and DESTINY only recently set the trend for 4 clip shows in each series.
  21. No it was actually more like the SUMO : http://www.mahq.net/mecha/gundam/mead/turn...earlydesign.htm 354812[/snapback] Although that was one of Mead's early Turn A designs, it wasnt the first. There's a book called Mead Gundam containing all his designs. His very first design was indeed a typical Gundam. It was like a slim and sleek RX-78 - a bit different from what we usually see, but clearly in the Gundam style. Mead notes that Tomino looked at the design and rejected it because he wanted something completely non-Gundam like.
  22. That's not completely true. Shinn never got his chance since Kira stole the show from him.
  23. Not likely. Some 1 hour clip show/epilogue couldn't possibly fix the damage done in dozens of episodes in the TV series. Unless the epilogue consists entirely of Shinn assassinating Kira, Athrun, Lacus and the rest of the Three Ships Alliance.
