  1. That's exactly why I went to see it Friday... my wife is less interested and wanted to wait for next Wednesday when we're both off work, but I wasn't about to go into hiding online and IRL for 5 days. I don't mind at all seeing it a second time, now that I've got a few things to look for from this thread.

    Bandai DX VF-31

I failed to notice this before, but I am not a fan of the flat-fold wing transformations. Retraction (YF-29) or pivoting back on a swept-wing joint (most others) seems way more stylish to me. No VF-31 high speed mode I guess.
  3. I'm loving the discussion, very enlightening for a movie that left me hungry to understand more of it. However, I had a minor quibble: On the same character: Regarding another new addition: One last thought:
  4. The conversion rate seems pretty favorable right now, should I order one of these from HLJ? Never had any attachment to the VF-4, but I am a fan of complex transformations and it has a slick appearance. It just happens to be from the one part of Macross I never paid any attention to.
  5. My expectations for the first one were so low I waited to rent it, and ended up buying the blue-ray because the wife and I enjoyed it so much. Suffice it to say, the sequel trailer has my interest very piqued. I don't find any confirmation with a quick web search, but it seems like we'll see Krang in this one - my guess is as an ending reveal to leave off for a sequel, however, and not a big presence. Bebop and Rocksteady seem like enough suspension of disbelief without going full Spider-Man 3 this time around.
  6. Part of me is going to walk out of this movie wondering why I didn't see any Jeeps, Dodge Chargers, or Lego people running around like in the trailers. OK, only half serious, but did this whole "paired advertising" (half trailer, half sponsor content) thing just start this year? The first I can recall noticing it was for Jurassic World. Sponsor ads have been around forever, I know, but it has never before seemed so blatant. It's shrewd advertising for sure, grafting an ad I would skip into a trailer I might be interested in. Still, bit of a shame that we now have commercials in our commercials.
  7. http://www.comingsoon.net/movies/trailers/637009-new-star-wars-tv-spots-and-disney-channel-promos#/slide/1 So I caught a new TV spot yesterday on the Disney channel, and the first lines in it seemed like something new I had not heard before: I doubt that it's a Pacific Rim reference. Has that line been in any of the other trailers? It definitely plays into some earlier (and popular) speculation.
  8. I would think Stark has a greater degree of influence with his gov't buddies (quite a bit) than he does with Cap & Team (none). Stark shares nothing with the military and insists on doing it all himself. War Machine works for the military, but his stolen/commandeered suit can still be overridden if it comes down to it. He's a control freak with good intentions. The existence of the Hulkbuster suit is a clear signal that he never puts 100% trust in his teammates.
  9. Gotcha, I suspected as much. They look mighty small, but for stability/balance it really wouldn't take much (like putting your hand on something while ice skating). They definitely would not be the primary Gerwalk thrusters for forward flight. Yep, that's the scene I was remembering. It's subtle, but agrees with the small size. The placement in Battroid mode (down at hip/buttock level) wouldn't be as stable when hovering in a gravity environment compared to at mid-back or shoulder level, and the Valkyrie would have to lean forward slightly to derive much benefit from it. Ironically, the back kibble growth on the 27 & 29 would compensate for this by moving the wing thrusters further from the Battroid's center of gravity, but would necessitate forward lean or a slow burn to stand upright on a surface. All that being said, is there a comparable stabilization thruster on the 30/31?
  10. Less about the controls themselves, but one thing I have also noticed is the lack of 3-point stability in Battroid and Gerwalk modes in recent series. Traditionally, we've seen a main thruster in each leg, and a third thruster in the backpack that helps maintain balance (same way Iron Man has to commit two feet and at least one hand to hover). It isn't needed for walking, but when Hikaru tripped into building #2 it came on to try and help his Valkyrie stay upright. I noticed in Frontier that the stock VF-25 lacks the back thruster, unless the little nodules where the shield attaches are supposed to be this (the show implies it with a light glow in the few Gerwalk scenes we can see clearly). The 30 and 31 also lack even a feature that could be interpreted as the third thrust point. We only see the balancing thrusters on the Tornado packs and the more advanced models with pivoting wing engines. I can't recall if the 21 had any thrust points other than the two backpack thrusters (maybe in the legs?), but it seems like two hard-aligned thrusters would be even worse to balance on than two leg jets. Has this ever been addressed?
  11. Very eloquently stated. The melee scenes in M+ were great for drama, because it showed on just how many levels the pilots wanted to defeat one another. The fights between Max and Millia in the original series were successively more personal as well. Frontier mixed and matched, and while the melee combat was not personal, it served dramatically to make the big scary bugs seem bigger and scarier. Compared to something like Escaflowne, where melee is more "period appropriate" to the show, Macross has way too much background in ranged combat to change the focus away from it. Itano Circuses and Wave-Motion Tuning Forks have consistently been mingled with closer combat to support the story/cinematography, and it doesn't seem like a formula worth short-changing. Now, if it goes the direction of melee weapons shooting energy waves at each other, unless Basara himself is at the controls I will have a hard time watching this series.
  12. Since I do not use the Tweeter, I just hope Omega Supreme wins it. That way I can buy one and stop being tempted by PX Genesis Trypticon will happen, vote or no. However, he doesn't really fit the Titan Masters gimmick, and the design will probably be controversial among fans due to scale compromises. Scorponok is a wild card... he has the appeal as a Fort Max nemesis, and already fits the Titan Master gimmick, but has not had as much of a presence in recent years and may not be first in fans' minds.
  13. It's a very weird realization that for this film I am looking more forward to the dogfights than the lightsaber duels. First time I've ever felt that way about a SW movie. Not that I expect any of it to be shabby, it just seems like the vehicle scenes have been done so well that they are really competing for the spotlight now, where before they were somewhat backdrop-ish (originals) or cheesy (prequels).
  14. 2nd degree black belt in ITF Tae Kwon Do, purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and 1-0 in amateur MMA (one and done, I was already in my 30's). These days I focus on the BJJ and grappling, and train/teach at an MMA gym. Waiting for my son to turn 4 so I can get him into the early kids classes.

Small addition to this point, but the hands also tuck into the wing just behind the arm slabs. In the underside pics you can see the back of the hand just aft of the slab, most likely with the wrist slightly telescoping back into the forearm like on the VF-0 toys. No more fancy covers flipping out from the lower legs.
  16. Speculation: we see 6 SV-262's, 4 pilots in darker uniforms and 1 in a lighter uniform, but all with gold trim. The Drakens are 5 gold, 1 blue. Lighter uniform = Roy/Ozma analog, pilots one of the gold Drakens Blue Draken = Blue-haired boy's valkyrie I predict the Blue-haired boy falls in with this group, and will have to make a choice between two sides, two interests (both ideological/political and romantic).
  17. For our church angel tree gift this year, assuming I can draw the tag for a boy 8-13, I want to get them an RC BB-8 (Hasbro version) and a theater gift card for the family to go see the film. Good idea, or no? This would of course be in addition to the clothes and any other specific requests, but it seems like a good idea to me. Is that likely to be the big thing this year?
  18. I must say, for a request that almost boils down to "which Optimus Prime toy do you like the best," this is the absolute most civil, polite and helpful TF-related conversation I have ever seen. I am glad to be a member of this forum.
  19. Depends on your preference. If you mean to keep the height under 6", the biggest one in that range with the most features would be the CHUG Voyager Prime, which is a little harder to come by these days. My personal favorite in the Voyager & under size classes is Voyager Animated Prime, closely followed by Deluxe WfC Prime (first game design). Both are excellent representations of their source media, but may or may not be the aesthetic choice you care for. For faithfulness to the original, though it's a little larger than 6", MP-10 is hands down the one most fans would go with.
  20. A re-release is much better than the remake I was fearing would happen. Knowing today's trends, they would have cast Justin Bieber as Marty.
  21. I'm positive Astrotrain will be happening in voyager size, the Sentinel Prime they showed for Titan Wars is a dead ringer to be repainted into him. I wonder what clever Headmaster assignment they will come up with.
  22. My initial impression is "all the best features from recent Fighter modes" (19, 25, 29, 30) but potentially all the worst from recent Battroid modes" (29, 30). Sleek jet, but at the cost of disproportionate back kibble. It did dawn on me that the lack of 29-style wing thrusters and recent innovations in the toys could fix this though. It just needs to have a high-speed wing position that doubles for the Battroid wing storage, and it will go from worrisome to awesome in my eyes.
  23. It was very obviously made with love and respect for the original G1 series, while also introducing some unique spins on the characters that had a lasting impact on the franchise as a whole. Literally every single character was memorable and contributed to the story. By all means give it a watch if you have not yet.
