Star Trek: Picard (CBS All-Access)
sketchley replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Yeah, I never got into BSG because, well... entertainment is escapism, and when it stops being that and imitates the news, I don't need it! Nevertheless, I've already been-here-done-that. Remember "Stargate Universe" and how they got rid of what made the original show unique, and copied BSG? Look how long that show lasted... And just like SGU, that's not a critique of the acting, writing and so on of ST:Disco and Picard. SGU and Disco are well made (haven't seen Picard... yet). The fundamental problem is the replacement of the gimmick that made the show unique by the gimmicks that worked for different unique shows.- 2171 replies

Thanks for clarifying! Regrettably, the recycled molds in Bandai kits do not make for a good example. The antenna on the regular version* appears to be a lot less... obvious! * https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/TIE/fo_space_superiority_fighter

Star Trek: Picard (CBS All-Access)

Again, missing my point. My point is to avoid all that. Ignore what you want, and cherry pick what you like with the understanding that "something sort of like that happened". All-in-all, Disco is rather forgettable. So it's not really worth the effort to make it "fit" with everything else. All that said, I see a lot of "I don't like it, so you must also not like it" going on in these parts. Live and let live...- 2171 replies

Wait... don't the First Order have 2 types of Tie Fighter? Regular, and Special Forces? (The latter being a 2-seater with the extra antenna thingamabob). Nevertheless, from the paint-scheme, I've always assumed it was an OT Tie Fighter...

That's beside my point. Who cares who it's made for, what matters is to find an explanation that works for you to get it to fit into your headcanon, and to avoid the mental anguish of trying to get a square peg (all the changes and revisions) to fit in a round hole (established canon). Obviously my trick doesn't work for you, but it may work for other people.- 2171 replies

2nded. I find ST:Disco more enjoyable than what a lot of the negative comments describe it as. As an SF show, it's middling decent (except for how they handle subtitles!). As a Star Trek show...? Once I gave it the Kawamori-san treatment*, it became much easier to digest. That said, Disco had a rocky start, and it wasn't until the 3rd or 4th episode that it found itself. * essentially: what we're seeing is an in-universe dramatization of historical events. So, something 'like' the events in Disco happened in the ST universe, just not exactly how they're shown in the show.- 2171 replies

Good news: it's completely unnoticeable at first glance! (like Tom Cruise's "middle tooth". ) I don't think anyone will notice it if you display it so it's mostly viewed side on.

Just a guess... but maybe the reasons for that occurred in a scene that got cut? (not a first for JJ. E.g. the First Order Snow Speeder chase scene in TFA)

Taking a stab in the dark: perhaps it's down to (future) royalty payments? If memory serves, that was the justification behind the re-imagining of the Empire in Disney's Star Wars, and the changes to the designs in the recent Star Trek stuff. In this case, it's not the licensee who is using new designs to get (future) merchandising royalty payments, but the licensor using their (original) design to avoid payments.

I'm not sure if a connection was intended other than by a similar sounding name. In Japanese, it's the island itself that is referred to as Mayan (マヤン島). So, the people living on it should be referred to as "Mayan Islanders" in English (マヤン島人). By "American Mayan", I'm presuming you're referring to the "Maya Civilization". If so, the Japanese for that is マヤ文明 (Maya bunmei). Take from that what you will (implied connection or coincidence), but keep in mind that the name Maya also shows up in Japanese. E.g.: Mt. Maya* (摩耶山, sometimes まや山) in Kobe—a domestic name, with absolutely no connection to the Maya Civilization. * https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Maya

While it's true that all 6 films are basically stand alones (in the sense that they provide enough detail within an individual movie to understand the greater context), I would say that 4, 5 and 6 are linked. Such things as the disbanding of the IMF organization and the destruction of the Kremlin in 4 are relevant to the plot/in-universe world in 5, and 6. And, as much as I totally dislike 3 and find it a redundant retread of 2, it kind of is essential if you want to fully understand Ethan Hunt's actions and character arc in 4 and 6.

Yeah, she's probably heard it so many times that she ignores it/him now. (I guess a less snarky opinion would be: at some level she registers it as 'my friends are here to help' and gets encouragement from that.)

That said, if you do watch them all, there are winks, nods, and other subtle references to the earlier movies in the latter three. For example, I really enjoyed Ghost Protocol all that much more when I noticed the brief appearance in a non-speaking role of a certain minor character from the first movie. However, Dynaman is right. The movies (especially the last few) were pretty much... "But McQuarrie and Cruise are keenly aware that they can’t lean too heavily on the plot or people will lose interest. We don’t need speeches. And so the dramatic stakes of the set-up are pretty much enough. Nuclear bombs, a double agent or two, a homicidal mastermind—now go!" https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/mission-impossible---fallout-2018

What about the Knights of Ren? They were underutilized in 7, disappeared during 8, and, well... their appearance in 9 was what it is because of 7 & 8. I think they would've made a nice rival pilot (or two) that's in-between the Imperials and the Force wielding Sith.

I experienced this problem yesterday, too, on desktop. My solution was to make a new Activity Stream, and it solved that problem: Activity > My Activity Streams > Create New Stream -
RIP. Rene Auberjonois has been one of those actors who seems to have appeared in all the big shows in the '80's and '90's (not to mention the hits after DS9), and it's been wonderful discovering his appearances in shows as diverse as MASH, Star Trek 6, and Stargate. The sense of stability you bring, and your always good performances will be missed. RIP

Very few (if it's anything like the Daegostini rerelease of Macross Chronicle). So far, I have yet to find any copies in any of the local bookstores (just like MC, the eastern part of Osaka Prefecture isn't part of their test area). -
I thought it was just Japanese manga/artistic shorthand to show he's really, really intelligent. Like a bubble coming out of the nose signifies someone is sleeping, a nose bleed for . . . well, you know.

I think limited budget is the reason why Star Wars was so good when the first film came out. Nowadays, with CG, etc., there is virtually an "unlimited" budget, allowing writers, etc. to use their first "story" ideas. Back in the day, they arguably couldn't go with their first idea, and had to rethink things to fit into the budget—invariably coming up with better ideas that helped the story. As someone mentioned about AOTC: the clones vs. droids battle is there for the spectacle (or "just because they could afford to do it"). Compare to the climactic battle scenes in ROTJ: they're kept to minimal snippets to convey the scale of the fight (due to budget limitations), and a lot of the focus is on the battle of wills between the Emperor and Luke (relatively low cost—as it's essentially closeups of actors acting with minimal visual and special effects)—which is at the heart and soul of Star Wars. Thus, big budgets are killing what makes Star Wars great.

WOW! I thought those small mecha collection "vehicle model" sets were highly detailed because they were merely smaller versions of the larger kits. That level of detail is a whole order of magnitude greater!

Ah, that line of reasoning assumes that everyone in Japan understands English at a native speaker level, no? Nevertheless, overseas movie renaming has been going on for ages. For example the 007 film "Tomorrow Never Dies" was changed to "007 Never Dies".

Agreed. That's something that seems to be forgotten with the sequels for Alien and Terminator (well, now that Ridley Scott is helming the movies again, it's arguable that the pendulum has swung too far back from 'action' movie for some fans' tastes). Going back to the original Terminator: let's not forget it's genesis: a fever-induced nightmare. IMHO, that sums up what the Terminator is all about.
