It's only referred to as the VF-5000 in TIAS:M+. SKMDW gives the following dates for the following versions: 97.05 for the VF-5000G. 97.10 for the VF-5000B 98.01 for the VF-5000T-G 98.06 for the transatmospheric Super Parts. Given that the transformation sequence is for the VF-5000G, I'm going to assertain that even though the VF-5000 (at least the fighter mode) was brainstormed and thought out prior to publication on 1995.03.01, it wasn't finalized until 1997.05. Making the design process of this VF somewhat similar to that of the VF-4. (Fighter mode published earlier, and battroid, gerwalk mode, extras, and transformation sequence finalized and published later.)

In fighter mode, the landing gear of the VF-17 is in the outermost downward facing angled surface of the legs. http://www.un-spacy-qmtdb.com/Macross%207/...ter-landing.gif -

Translation of the two articles completed, and up: http://www.macrossroleplay.org/forums/index.php?topic=1422 (finally found the time to complete it... busy, busy!) Clarified the first article, and added some translation notes. By the sound of things, I think we might be in for a special 1 hour broadcast, followed by a lull, and then the start of the series proper. -

The singer (Sheriru) is described as a 'song princesses'. I interpret the listen to my song as more of a whine then Basara's demand. -
Children come from somewhere: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parent For example, characters like Isamu and Guld, whom as far as I know are not clones themselves, are most likely the children of clones. the other Genius kids are mentioned. I believe one other sister appears in the M7 movie, and one or two others appear in some of the games released.

After the Earth was blown up real good, the survivors joined with the Zentraedi, and they went on a raiding mission to capture the Factory Satellite from other Zentraedi. The Factory Satellite has been used to both build new things (ships, VFs, cities, colonies) as well as clone virtually the entire human race, or their parents, that are seen in the later Macross productions.

Thanks Kresphy. The FAST packs look positively SV-51 influenced! Is that an Einstein ship getting blown up real good? Or should I speculate and say it's a space lifeform ship? -

Translation of the text on those two recent pictures from UN Spacy: "Macross F (Frontier)" "Macross 25th Anniversary Commemoration Special End of the year, decision to broadcast" This is consistent with the article in Newtype, which has numerous references to a broadcast starting this winter. *cough* winter starts December 1st *cough* -

I believe it's the same quality as the DIVX version that was posted earlier. What stands out for me is the nice stereo mix. Though, I can't remember if the DIVX version was in mono or stereo... -
I think the VF-5000 can be coloured not so much going by role (as that's nigh impossible to determine with some of the games) but by era. If I'm not mistaken, M3 covers the 20's and 30's, and M+ game edition covers the mid 40's. Though, tactically speaking, a light and dark blue paint is better than a flashy red pin striped one.

I stand corrected on the VF-5000B in VF-X2. However, to my defense, I own the mass market version, and there is no VF-5000B in either the "Macross VF-X2 Official Visual Guide" or the "Macross VF-X2 Perfect Official Clue Guide" books on the game. Nevertheless, I still stand behind my opinion on the colours. The SHE kit colours are also groovy too. (Much better than the cannon-fodder tawny of the VF-X2.) Badboy00z: scroll up. Mr_March has posted an image with the transformation sequence. It's very small, so I'll give you a hint on the arms: they split in half, with the missile launcher part forming the section between the engine nacelles in jet mode. If you look closely, you can see the tips of the tails sticking out of the arms in battroid mode too.

There's no VF-5000B in VF-X2 (at least the Japanese release of it.) I'd go with the M+ Game Edition colours (UN Spacy vehicle it be) and, if they are different, the ones in M3.

Look closely. The military ships are there. Someone else has already pointed out a Guantánamo Stealth Carrier. There are other small things near it, which are too big to be fighters, and what I suspect are Bolognese Stealth Frigates. Even in the opening shot, there is an Uraga Escort Battle Carrier, in silhouette of course. Also, the logic of the schooling doesn't make sense. The series starts before any attack, with the protagonists already in school. -

FYI, it's captioned as 新型バルキリー VF-171. In English: the latest style [design, model] Valkyrie. As for the VF-25, the caption reads 可変戦闘機:バルキリーの最新鋭機。 In English: State of the the art Valkyrie variable fighter. Expecting [expectation] to be drawn in the recent 3DCG. As time permits, I'm also nearing the completetion of the 2nd article in the Newtype December issue. -
It's running when the rerun of Macross 7 is running. No other reason than targeting your demographic.

The good news is that the next Appleseed movie has better character designs. I can't say too much, because my memory has faded from when I saw the preview and related images, however, I was impressed at the time, and felt that they were an improvement.

I believe it's because those themes are constant with all of Shirow Masamune's works. Black Magic: check all. Dominion: check all except the cyborg (though there are artificially created humans, also present in Appleseed, and no puppet master.) The debate on humanity is focused on enviromental impact this time. Orion: check all except cyborg (though there are magically enhanced humans, as well as mythological creatures.) The debate on humanity is focused on humanity's inherent good and evil. The Puppetmaster concept, or at least a person behind the scenes controlling everything, isn't something new to Japanese fiction. In fact, it's derigeur when it comes to politics and history. The twist that Masamune Shirow added with GitS, is that the Puppetmaster originally was originally a tool of another puppet master, and is the first naturally born AI. In the end, I see Appleseed as a meditation on the nature of humans, and whether our continued existence will destroy all life on Earth, and GitS as a meditation on life, and individuality in a society that is becoming increasingly monocultural and populated by people consisting of the same memes - taken to the extreme of being able to inhabit the same bodies. EDIT: changed monsters to mythological creatures; a more accurate meaning.

Appleseed's CG animation is the way of the future. Heck - Macross is following a similar direction, just not diving 100% into it at once. I think CG animation is a "just get over it" thing. I thought the Appleseed movie was great. Mind you, I saw it without subtitles, and not grasping the story completely (definitely not everyday colloqual Japanese in stretches of that movie!) I loved the animation, music, sound effects. The character designs... I was a little put off at first, but they've grown on me, and I feel that they capture the look and feel of the originals. The greatest parts of the movie, IMHO, are the action sequences. Finally, someone gave the landmates the love they deserve! And boy, do they look great in action. Later, I did see a subtitled version of the movie, and I was let down quite a bit. It's not so much surprising that the story is convoluted, but that they changed parts of it so drastically from the original. All well, a 2 hour movie can't be the same as a 27 chapter manga. Here's hoping that the new Appleseed movie will continue the story that Shirow Masamune abandoned when he stopped pening Appleseed and switched to Dominion Tank Police C1 back in '93. About Ghost in the Shell... well none of the animations match the original manga, as they've seperated the two themes of the story. The 2 movies are all about the metaphysical aspects, whereas the 2 TV series and 3rd movie are all about the special forces and techno-socialogical aspects. That's not to say that the two animated versions haven't retained some of the details or aspects of the other, but the thematic presentations are focused differently. Personally, I like the movie version, perhaps slightly more than the SAC version, as it's more science fiction; whereas the SAC version is more sci-fi. Sadly, sci-fi is the route that the Appleseed movie took, and it lost the science fiction aspect of the manga... Lastly, the music in the Appleseed OVA is funky! It's classic cheese from the '80's.

That, or they could simply be test or trainer markings on a jet. Small yellow and black striped hexagonal markings are definitely more visually interesting than say... the data collection markings on the CID: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm...ID_slapdown.jpg -

I'm tending to favour GGemini's post. In addition, I'd like to add that no power armour was shown in the preview. However, I've been withholding saying anything until now because the immediate preceeding production by Statlight, and their project commenced specifically to gain experience in making a Macross show, had power armours mounted in VFs. -

Given the documentation so far, it is most likely a student Valkyrie. Whether it is a training VF, testing VF, or something totally different, is yet to be clarified. As far as has been suggested, the VF-17 is the main fighter of the colony fleet...
