Yup yup. This is a war for the species. Whatever humans have done, the Cylons have done worst as they're perpetrated genocide and nuked their planets. If the Soviets had nuked the Eastern seaboard during the Cuban Missile Crisis, we would have annihilated their entire civilization from the Baltic through Sibera to Vladovistok and from the northern tip to the southern boarder and probably most of the Eastern Bloc to go with it. Meek and gentle people sitting safe and sound behind their computers are only free to do so because rough men are ready to do violence on their behalf.

I am really suspicious of the Pegasus in plot, too. As with the TOS Pegasus, Cain has a dark side. Which we've all seen. This new Cain just doesn't have the charisma and living legend aspects of the original so it's all negative with little positive (aside from the obvious of bringing a second Battlestar into the equation). I am thinking there is more to this Cain, though. The original made a deal with the devil (literally) while the good guys were being watched over by the flying snowflake. This time, no snowflakes and probably no "Count Iblis" , either. This Cain was is either a coward or a collaborator. The former has already been discussed a bit... the latter... maybe there IS a Count Iblis analogue we haven't seen yet. Human-form cylon / lover or something on the opposite form of Baltar? Forbes seems far too frigid for that so far, but maybe we're being deliberately misled? The rape was the one thing that was perfectly understandable as the human form cylons are just that, human-form cylons. They're not human. Toasters made up with skin and bones to look and act like people but still toasters.. Has everyone forgotten about Starbuck's torture of Galactica's captured Cylon? The normal rules don't apply and a brutal hand is called for with the extinction of the species at hand. Someone brought up Platoon. :shudder: Horrible movie but typical hollyweird depiction of Vietnam. Bumbling dividied US troops where boy scouts are more disciplined, professional, and can set up a better perimeter. Versus well trained and highly motivated enemy. Besides, who sets up their HQ in an ammo dump?

Don't forget the complete lack of charisma.

Anime DVDs -- is it bootleg or the real deal?
Uxi replied to danth's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
If the subtitles sound like something from Babelfish, then it's definitely a boot leg. If it makes perfect sense, it's a fansub bootleg. If it's somewhere in between, and/or has a corny sounding dub, it's legit. -
Heh, I remember this one. Think I might still have it on VHS somewhere. I thought it was pretty funny. The tagline was something like "when he gets turned on, he turns into a 10 foot tall blue monster" or something like that.

Michael Douglas is a shitty actor anyway. Charisma definitely needed... Patrick Stewart! Now you're talking.

William Shatner would have been GREAT as Caine. I think Leonard Nimoy would have been better. Probably too old, though. Arnold could have been good, but his gig as the Governator makes that unlikely at best. The main problem I have with Michelle Forbes is not gender but that she's not a peer of Adamas aka an elder warrior/statesman type that Bridges seemed. An older woman would have worked. No names are coming to mind but I'm thinking a more distinguished Kate Mulgrew-type would have worked. Bridges' Caine was a peer of Greene's Adama, and hammy or not, he had presence and you could feel the respect of all the Galactica Warriors towards him as an Elder Warrior rather than just a leader or someone with rank. I have trouble envisioning Sackhoff's Starbuck feeling the way Benedict's did about Caine, for example. Baltar's fear. I had forgotten about that, but that's another point. This Baltar is afraid of everything, so not to worry about that.

The "homemade" hobby fighter seemed kinda silly. I would have been much happier if there was a factory ship somewhere in the Fleet or that the Galactica had that capability itself. Hell the whole Fleet should be working for a single goal and that's the defense of the Fleet. Nice and fascist. Pegasus sounds interesting. That chic doesn't measure up to Lloyd Bridges anymore than Starbuckette measures up to Dirk Benedict, but sounds like they're gonna have a similar conflict. They haven't done the flying snowflake angle yet so I'm doubting they'll do the Mephistopholes thing. All that stuff aside, it seems obvious that the Cylons have semi-allowed and directed Galactica to it's point. Wherever the whole reproduction storyline is going, Galactica and the Fleet are at the center. Pegasus is likely to be filled with clones. Otherwise it's gonna do what the original did and sacrifice itself while it's vipers and extra crewers replenish Galactica. Roslyn? IF she dies, it would be an opportunity for the Council of Twelve business. They could then have Baltar turn overt traitor, meet his Lucifer and take over a Base Star... nah.

Wow, that thing looks... bulky. But that's what we should expect when you try to turn a VF-1 into a Destroid.
-
Wow, looks very nice. I'd prefer the green pilot and darker color myself.

I really really wish I hadn't passed on the Hikaru 1S when I coulda got it for $130.

"...shines the name of Rodger Young."
Uxi replied to the white drew carey's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I always thought the book was kind of overrated. -
Well the beauty of a custom is that it could be a VF-19RF or something...
-
I'm kicking myself for not picking up a second at $130.

I need to pull my DesignWorks out... but IIRC the F doesn't have the canards, either. Still pretty good idea. I like the articulation and battroid of the Yamato... but the Bandai mold wins in Fighter and Gerwalk, though it insn't nearly detailed enough (sturdy as a tank, though, even in bootleg form).

Probably one. Now a cannon fodder... I could see maybe 2 or 3.

touche! ... Likewise! I have no problem at all with the speaker-pod/sound booster concept. Note that Basara's music wouldn't do squat to Zentraedi or Gamlin or such in any era. What it WAS effective in was in counteracting Protodevlin spirita absorption, mind control, etc. The war against the Zentraedi and the war against the Protodevlin are apples and meatloaf. Diamond Force is entirely different at the end (under Gamlin) than at the beginning (under Kinryu). Kinryu and Physica are KIA and Dokker and Kinryu were both jacked up by having their mojo drained. I thought that was quite well portrayed. Basara staying dead... would have been interested but would require more adjusment. Maybe Mylene would come out of her dream, Sivil would see how Basara affected Mylene, and then join with Mylene... definitely a possibility and Basara's death could have been portrayed to have a lasting impact. Actually, the military was quite effective until the protodeviln started coming out in person and the fighter pilots were reveealed to be brainwashed humans and zentradi. Between their inability to hurt the ringleaders and their unwillingness to hurt the cannon fodder, that tied their hands signifigantly. Not really... what we were shown is that the protodevlin were always holding back. Their objective was NEVER to defeat the Macross 7 fleet... if they had, it's fate would have been that of Macross 5. They were trying to bring fear and such in them because it made the spirita absorption more lucrative (though not quite to the Geperenich's Spirita Farm project). I didn't get that at all. I saw that first Sivil and then Geperenich discover that the ability to reproduce Spirita was within him/her-self and that it didn't need to be a parasite on other beings... That bastard Gavil just seemed to follow Geperenich along. As I understood Mac7, only the best singers are capable of regenerating spiritia. Seems to have something to do with how much emotion they put into their songs. We do see that there were several auras in the Jamming Birds but it took Basara what, half the series to get to where he was in the final confrontation with Geperenich. Mylene was almost there as well. The others might not have had their potential but we're moving to conjecture... Uh... Gamlin certainly was interested and these exact lines early in the series. Chiba was apparently involved but at a minimal level and alot of it appeared to be his own semi-quackery theories until validated by Basara in the course of the conflict. Max Jenius himself was involved at least at some level. Witness the comments Max makes to Ray about Basara's piloting ability... and the various references to Project-M. Plus Max calling Diamond Force off Basara and Basara not being hunted or reprimanded at all by the M7 military. Emerald Force was a failure on the large scale (even if they were quite effective on a smaller one) and they did not significantly affect Operation Stargazer nor the final conflict with the Protodevlin. Too little, too late.

Uh... sounded like a pretty good review but then I start to wonder if this guy even watched the series. The whales weren't villains even in the OVA, the poachers were. Dynamite 7 is worth it just to watch Gamlin in his VF-22 IMO. As far as the protodelvin, I thought the first couple were introduced really well but then they lost their awe/scare effect. When that expeditionary force finds City 7 and we see Sivil just thrash the whole force, jack up Kinryu and then nearly get Gamlin... Same when that tentacle rears up and lets loose its first blast everyone is going WTF. The problem was the execution after the fact for the big monstrous one (Glavil) and that some of them were just silly or not scary at all (the dual Gorm/Zomd or whatever they were called). Sivil, Guravil, Glavil, Valgo, Gigil, and Geperenich all have good potential. The regular series starts off slow, but it's supposed to. We're left wondering exactly what is going on. By the time the City 7 arc starts, I couldn't get enough of the series. I was totally on the DYRL-side of Macross at first. My gf at the time was certainly surprised I liked M7 but I did and still do. Animation could have been better with less re-use but that's water under the bridge at this point.

I never liked Falcon 4.0 before but have been considering giving these "new" takes another look as I'm in simulator withdrawl. I think the peak of the PC fighter simulators was probably ATF-Gold. Loved that game especially once the patch unlocked all of the other craft, with cockpits... MiG-29 to F-15 to F-22 to the Aurora. Good times!

Good analogy with the pen/pencil thing. Bad analogy with the computer thing. Can you gameboy and/or entertainment system take extreme environmental change, including radiation? The reason they use dinky computers in the Shuttles isn't by chance. Not that they couldn't be using something better... Budgetary considerations are VERY much a factor as has been proven with the procurement of every weapon system the US DoD uses... and has been proven with the defeat of many weapon systems the DoD wanted but were denied. That said, it's not entirely what most people think (even considering Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom and the general global war on terrorism) as we're almost always in deficit spending. That this should be blamed on unrestriected growth in entitlement spending is another issue... The Shuttle? Another one should be built as a temporary replacement. Enterprise conversion possibly as long it's to spec. Possibly with incremental and peripheral upgrades on the fundamental platform/paradigm. Begin the permanent replacement program now (X-33 derivative). I definitely thing we should bring back the Saturn Rocket in a next generation as well as finish the ISS (and our own US only stations) and get an increased permanent presence in space, including an eyeball to the moon. At the cost saved by the elimination of the tree-hugging and social programs no less.

I think the Beta looks great. Hopefully they'll release a green and Shadow...

Pretty good, but I was actually kinda disapointed with the season premiere... the whole subplot on Caprica... Helo is a retard. I'm hoping they'll be able to push the SFX envelope a bit and show us some grand battles in space... they seem to shrug off the damage to Galactica itself too much... Did this episode remind anyone else of the one with the raider that crashes into the landing pod that caused the fire? That's kinda where I see the next one going... except it's "live" centurions instead of fire...

I always did like the updated look of the newer-style Vipers...

Not bad Engrish at all.

Just saw this earlier today. First impression: Better than I expected. I was kinda disapointed with the way they revealed Qui-Gon, I mean Liam Neeson as the main villain all along (if I understood his claim right). Would have been better to have had Watanabe back, as well, IMO. Right now, I'd rank them: Batman Forever (Worst Bruce Wayne but best Batman, IMO) Batman Begins Batman (Keaton best Bruce Wayne but never did like Tim Burton's style much). Batman & Robin (Governator was cool but Alicia was weak. Liked Clooney). Batman Returns (Nice scene with the milk but the rest was sad IMO) Not that big of a batman fan, though....
