I would try using pencil to do slightly off-shade "panels", then use a kneaded eraser to fade them (dab them with the eraser), rahter than "lines". Once you're happy with them, then you could clear-coat it to make it permanent (keeping in mind it gets a bit darker with clear coat). I'd get a scrap of flat styrene, paint half white and half blue (hull colors) and try it out on that first to see if it would work for you and to see if the clear coat would make the pencil too dark. On that note: I've also used colored pencils to do a "color filter" effect on models; you might want to look into those as well if you get a moment. -

Yeah...kinda hard to pilot a ship if Misa and Claudia had to get 30 foor stepladders just to hit the buttons for thrusters. O.o -
I can just imagine when the crew of the SDF-1 talks with UN Spacy High Command, HQ sounds like the teacher fro Peanuts. BTW: not sure if it counts as "character art", but at least it's funny:

Show-accurate as of the final episode! -
Good suggestion Thom! On the pengbuzz projects forefront: I recently got a G1 Jetfire as a very belated b-day gift(1/55 scale valk) but the feet are incredibly brittle. I need to find a pair of newer feet (even a KO version would probably work). Need to also find a gunpod and the armor, but the feet are important. (if anyone has any, please shoot me a PM! Jetfire feels weird without his toes!) The thrill of victory, the agony of da feet....I can barely stand it.

I've had times where my masking jobs took the paint right with it: in my case, I found I had to let the paint cure for about 2-3 days before trying anything. I don't know if that would help you (you probably already tried something like that) I also know some paints don't stay on primer very well; that said, you could try "post-it notes" (the adhesive shouldn't pull up anything).

Maybe in the "tummy" of the SDF-1 (which has a natural hinged compartment) and run wires to the legs? That would allow you to access the batteries without ruining anything. -

Yeah, there was. It took a lot to do the conversion; I wish I had pics of that, but I didn't have a digicam at the time. But maybe someday I'll get another crack at it. Meanwhile... I'm really liking what you're doing with the main engine clusters here. It's really going to be very interesting to see it assembled up! -
Okay, I wanted to gove back to the forums for everyone's kindness here, so I did some clean-up: 1-3000 SDF-1 assembly.pdf 2 Hopefully, this will open; if not, i'll post the jpeg of it.

Well, he didn't go to prison for that; he was kicked out of the house, got married and moved away. He ended up nearly killing his 4 month old daughter (shaken baby syndrome) and the state took her away, and sentenced him to 10 years in jail. Anyways, enough of me derailing the thread; I wonder if tekkering finanlly decided on a color for the engines? -

So he went from trying to smooch Minmay to managing a ripoff band? Sigh... what's next? Bootleg Hikaru ichijo action figures? -

As I said folks: it met a tragic end. As in it ended up shattered in a billion pieces shortly after it was photographed in a freak mishap (thanks to a certain malicious/ psychotic sibling who later ended up serving time in prison and was disowned). Anyways, at least I had it for a little while... -

Exactly; it's called "red lead" or "antifouling red" for the hull below the waterline, and "haze grey" above. I suspect UN Spacy wanted to "break up" the hull lines on the Macross so that the enemy didn't have one solid-colored target to strike at (in space, dakrer colors would not sho up so well). Also, I suspect without Earth's atmosphere, the year-long trip, exposed to the solar wind, charged particles, UV and other forms of radiation (solar and extra-solar) would take a farily hefty toll on the ship. So, like with any mode, what point in time you're depicting would also determine it as well. if you take a look at modern flight decks after some use, they have wheel marks and streaks all over the place. And yeah: neither carrier really were intended to be attached to the Macross. But most anti-slip/skid coatings on flight decks actually tends to be black/ dark charcoal grey. -

Acually, I would use water and ground-up graphite to deepen the effect all over on that one, then a couple of modulated white wash passes, then some dry-brushing. On a side note: about a decade ago, I had done a conversion on the Matchbox SDF-1 I had at the time (back before they cost a mint) into the DYRL Macross. While it didn't transform ( joints snapped at the shoulder and I wasn't skilled/ resourceful enough to repair it at the time), I did manage to get a 1/3000 scale DYRL Macross several years ahead of everyone else: Sadly, this met a tragic end when I moved. Anyways, I remembered having done some "thruster burn" on the ends of the engines and remembered this project. If I ever get my hands on another Matchbox SDF-1, I think I'll try my own mods for a TV version. -
I usually just paint some masking tape, cut it into strips and attach with Aileen's tacky glue.

Oh, MAN!!! I wish I had known; a couple of months ago, I had parts from a Bandai Dougram (found it mostly built in a thrift shop)! I wish I had saved them for ya!

I'm in the Northeast; so far, everything is pretty well locked down tight. At this rate, September's not looking very good either to be frank.

I wonder what they're planning for the next wave of these? Destro would be an interesting one to see... Addition: saw him in the wave (oops!) Seems pretty good to me.

Probably because it hasn't featured as the one of the main mechs in an anime yet.
