Macross Δ (Delta) - NYE Special Talkback - READ 1st POST

Oh. Well, don't worry. With two competing groups, these shipping wars promise to be even more exciting than last round. -
If Into Darkness is anything to go by, you might have to start looking elsewhere...

I could've sworn the movie said something about the beams traveling through hyperspace or even beyond hyperspace, as an explanation of why it can be seen across the galaxy(/universe?) at the same time.

My question is whether The Force Unleashed is no longer canon now. It was a bit odd seeing Starkiller refer to a Neo-Death Star and not the Gary Stu that was that short-lived franchise's main character. (I'm so cool I hold my lightsaber behind me! And I use TWO of them no less! I'm sooo cool!) Speaking of Sith naming, the whole "Darth Mean-Wordius" shtick was the absolute dumbest. Like I think the "Darth" title started becoming a thing through the extended universe, and then bled into the prequels, which was fine I guess, if a bit lame. Darth Vader didn't become menacing because his name was menacing. His name became menacing because HE was menacing. Making others adopt his name only serves to strip them of their unique identity as well as dilute his legacy. But it's fine, it's nothing big. But then you get stuff like "Darth Maul," "Darth Plagus," "Darth Sidious," like you mention above, and you've gotta shake your head at Lucas (not for the first time, mind) because could he make them any more generic? They may as well do a little song and dance whenever they appear and say, "Hey guys we're EEEEVIL!!!" (And to be fair, they did do pretty much that.) At least Kylo Ren is just Kylo Ren. But I swear to god, if he ha a new Darth name next movie... well, I don't plan on seeing it anyway, but this way I'll feel even further justified.

Wasn't there a shipping war just a few pages back? Freyrage4life -
Supposedly it all has to do with what type of crystal is used to power the lightsaber. So a blue lightsaber remains blue regardless of who's using it. But then they start talking about how orange lightsabers mean you're a calm fighter, green means you're wise, etc., and red means you're the evil. So does that mean that if a Jedi picks up a Sith lightsaber, they become instantly a Sith themselves? And if so, why not just send a shipment of red lightsabers to the academy for the little bastards in training and you can convert people en masse instead of training one lousy student at a time who's more likely to try and kill you in thanks than not? Grumble grumble grumble...

I remember reading somewhere that Gerwalk was nothing more than a fortunate and useful byproduct/stage of the transformation from fighter to battroid. Am I just completely talking out of my butt? Maybe it was something from Robotech... Which fleets are these?

I'm really looking forward to seeing how this works out as well. Best of luck. I've been thinking about getting a Bandai Messiah myself, and posing it in battroid/Gerwalk modes alongside the superior Hasegawa fighter kit. (I suppose I could alternatively try modding the Hasegawa kit into the other modes...)

One of the stupidest things to ever come out of Star Wars is the association of lightsaber color with the Force. When only the three films existed, the contrast of lightsabers made for nice symbolism. Then for whatever reason they decided that the Sith ONLY had red lightsabers and went on to try and rationalize that in-universe through crystals and colors being reflective of the character of the Jedi and other arbitrary nonsense. That's generalizing to the point of rendering your argument invalid. It's not that today's audiences have shorter attention spans and/or require faster action to be stimulated; it's that studios THINK today's audiences have shorter attention spans and/or require faster action to be stimulated. I showed A New Hope to my niece and nephews (10, 8, and 7) and they loved it, especially my niece, which came as a nice surprise. Then we watched The Princess Bride and they watched that all the way through, too.

Huh. I thought he wasn't attached to the movie, but a quick google proved me wrong. Well, that's a double shame.

Oh, I forgot about that. I suppose that's something. I quite liked Kylo Ren, actually. It was a little bit of a bait and switch. "Hey, look at this frakking badass PSYCHE HE'S ACTUALLY A crap KID because what else were you expecting from A crap KID!" Rey and Finn are likable enough characters the same way the original trilogy cast were likable enough characters the first time I saw those movies, too. I'm gonna need a few more years before they'll start growing on me, though. The Luke reveal was underwhelming and yet dragged on for far too long, I think. That's another common criticism I had with the movie: there are so many over-protracted scenes (especially of constipated Force concentration). If they had just cut the ending off two minutes earlier, when Rey gets into the Falcon, that would have made for a perfectly fine ending point. Can I not like something and criticize it at the same time? Like I said in my original response to this thread, the movie's perfectly serviceable. I believe my exact words were "It's miles above the prequels, but miles above the Mariana Trench is still just sea level." Revenge of the Sith has a 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. It must be a good movie, then. Seems you're taking this a bit more personally than others are. One other thing that struck me: The music is better in the prequels. And not just more memorable, but legitimately better. Different from the original trilogy, but incredibly good nonetheless, and one of the few high points of the prequels.

I wouldn't say enjoyable, but I definitely agree that they're at least more memorable. Everyone immediately latched onto Darth Maul, for instance. And the battle from Episode 3 certainly sticks out, even if none of the specifics do and it only sticks out for all the wrong reasons anyway. TFA has... the TIE-against-the-sunrise shot? Other than that, most of the movie is a haze, and I honestly can't even tell you when in the movie that shot takes place and why.

Project number 86 version 5 revision b - Defender XV

For what it's worth, those Builders Parts (ie the first three) are designed for Bandai's 1/144 Gundam kits (they stand about 12.5 cm tall), and that last one, part of the Modeling Support Goods kits, is a handheld gatling gun for Kotobukiya's 1/100 Frame Arms (which measure 14-18 cm tall). From a quick google-fu, the Destroid model should measure around 15-16 cm. More pics of the tripod gatling gun: http://dalong.net/review/bf/bc23/bc23_p.htm -
Ooh, nice. Good luck on the casting. Will that be a solid chunk of clear resin, or will you be making a hollow cast?

Hey guys. Contemplating my own Revell F-14D, what are some of the advantages of raised panel lines? I'm looking at all the raised surface detail and I'm not relishing rescribing everything. What was the impetus for the transition from raised to recessed panel lines? -
I asked this somewhere else a few years ago, but I've since forgotten. We use "VF" and "valkyrie" interchangeably. Is it the same in the Macross world, or do they use "Valkyrie" to refer to strictly the VF-1, and "VF" to refer to the broader group? Phoenix, Excalibur, Messiah, etc. aren't nearly as ubiquitous. Also unrelated: Is it YF-19 Excalibur, or YF-19 Alpha One, or just YF-19? (And YF-21 Sturmvogel (II?), or YF-21 Omega One, or YF-21?)

Gundam Show Thread - MSG thru Witch from Mercury
kajnrig replied to Black Valkyrie's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
You may be right. But I do think this show has bits and pieces of good writing, it just relies too much on bland, by-the-numbers anime conventions (and even then, it doesn't use them to good effect so much as to fill time). I won't bore you by writing too many more walls of text than I already have, but I think the majority of my criticisms can be summarized by "It's inconsistent." When you're with the side characters, the writing and the story is generally really good, fun, interesting stuff. Like Biscuit and his brother, or Atra as a whole (though it does get a bit heavyhanded at times, no pun intended), or Orga and especially his relationship with Merribit. If the writers wanted to do a romance subplot, those two would have been prime material. But what's really great is that they don't have to, either. Their contentious, mutually (and begrudgingly, for one) respectful relationship is ripe with possibility, and the power dynamic is all weird and not totally tipped in favor of either party the way it is with Mika/Kudelia. I can easily see them playing out any number of ways: becoming good friends and allies, she becomes his and Tekkadan's surrogate mother figure, they become involved romantically, she (or he) chooses Teiwaz over Tekkadan, etc. Tekkadan are strong, Teiwaz and the crew of that... other... ship (I forget its name) are strong, even creepo-guy McGillis is a strong character because it's clear he's very politically savvy, and his intentions and actions can always be multi-layered. Why is he courting this nine-year old girl? Maybe he really is just a pedophile. Maybe he's playing her for political gain. Maybe he actually does legit like her. Maybe--and so on and so forth. When you're with Mika and Kudelia, which is unfortunately most of the time because they're the leads, the writing tanks. You can never (or at least I can never) get a real feel for who those two are, because the writers themselves don't seem to know who they are. Kudelia starts out as a gifted and accomplished politician, but then she becomes... an insecure housewife? And then an insecure love interest? Meanwhile, Mika remains as apathetic as ever and yet everyone wants to please him or get his approval. He's not particularly introspective and talkative yet will, unprompted, discuss his feelings. So... yeah. It's inconsistent.- 3574 replies

If not there, maybe Mandarake or Yahoo Japan auctions. (There's another place that gets thrown around a lot, but I can't remember it.) Those are Japanese-language sites, though, so I imagine you'd have to do the bidding through a proxy service. Otherwise, Bandai re-issues their old kits once in a blue moon, meaning the usual Amiami/HLJ/Hobby Search routes are also available. HLJ has them listed as backordered. http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN27309/Gun http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN27969/Gun

Oh, man, those curves... Say what you will about how outdated the kit is, but it sure does capture the look of the GP01 better than any kit after it.

Wow. I never realized how small the VF-1 really is. (Unless it's a different scale, but that doesn't seem to be the case.) Nice collection. Even the YF-29 looks goodish. Must be the skull and crossbones.
