So, as I see it, HG can do the following: -Push the RT movie now and push hard. To that I say good luck. I'm still not watching it. Never really cared to watch it anyways. -Let the license die in 2021. While this would force them to create their own IP and restrict them less, they would need to spend more brain cells making a better product. And one that would not infringe on copyright now (Not just trademarks). -Renegotiate the license. This would be the best option, but the ball is in Tatsunoko's court for this one. Tatsunoko has options here (which I'll get to). At this point, HG would probably ask for the same or more rights. I'm not sure Tatsunoko would give up more rights (nor would it be in their best interest). -Renegotiate for a per-show license. This would be cheaper and they could cherry pick, but it closes some options for them. But they would still get certain things to exploit. But the ball is still in Tatsunoko's court with this. I see Tatsunoko's options as: -Tatsunoko can ask (and should) ask for more money if a renewal comes up. If I were Tatsunoko and HG approached me to renew, I would factor in the amount Tatsunoko thinks HG owes them from all those litigations into a new license just to stick it to HG. Tatsunoko can play hardball and say that's the terms now. I'm sure Tatsunoko has run the numbers on how much they have gotten over the years from this license. Does the incoming royalties outweigh anything they could do on their own? I don't know and most of us don't work for Tatsunoko so that's a hard question to answer. -Tatsunoko can decline the license renewal. They could go on their own and bring these 3 shows to online platforms and other outlets. They could sub-license to Bandai, get these shows subbed and bring them to limited runs on Youtube or any other platform. This would keep the profits "closer to home". They could look at how well the Gundam-model of having shows air in Japan then have them uploaded to Youtube after the initial airing goes. Our they could approach Crunchyroll or other outlets. -Tats could only license certain shows. They could license Macross and Mospeda, but only because it would likely turn a profit. But I'm sure Tatsunoko would have new terms this time around. Not the huge blanket they did in the 1980s. Or both sides agree to the same terms at modern pricing, but if Tatsunoko wants to reign in control of their IPs, I don't think this would happen.

Yeah, we've been hinting/mentioning/basically writing their plot for them so they should really pay us this since they announced they sold off the live-action rights. It's very easy for them to take a rough outline of the Macross-portion of the series, strip out all the stuff that made it Macross and you have your generic "spaceship lands on Earth and humans exploit it then the aliens come back to claim their property"-plot. We've been saying this for years. If they want RT to survive, they need write out the Macross-y stuff (and bare necessities of Southern Cross and Mospeada), take the bare bones and start from scratch with their own IP. This movie is their way out. It's always been.

All Things Videogame Related: EXTREME VS!!
azrael replied to Keith's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Let me clarify. I wouldn't want to bring a personal laptop behind the Great Firewall of China unless I planned on reformatting it when I get back. Hence, I would use the company laptop and let the IT department deal with it when I get back.- 6944 replies

I see it as a failing of the current generation of artists employed by Disney (and "Hollywood" artists in general these days). Rogue One had the benefit of at least some Lucas-era Lucasfilm alum doing the designs. And it benefited by using old designs. These new movies have to milk the brain a lot more for me to like the designs. I equate the eras of Star Wars designs with real-life trends (like car design). The Prequels had a lot of curves and slowly progressed to an industrial design as we got to the OT. These days, cars have brought back the curves but stayed boxy. There's an aerodynamic quality to cars these days where they slope low in the front and higher in the back. I haven't seen that kind of design trend in these 2 movies. It's like in 20 years in Star Wars time, they haven't put much thought into design when they did between the Prequels and the OT.

A Statement Regarding Star Wars: Episode IX Thankfully it's early, but did he actually want to be.... creative and not want to recycle McQuarrie designs????

Yet another Mcquarrie-look, which already showed up in Rebels. Is it so hard for this generation to be a little more imaginative? Kylo's TIE is literally Vader's TIE Advanced with Interceptor protrusions on the front.

And god knows how long Apple and Samsung have been throwing litigation at each other, yet Apple still goes back to Samsung because Samsung has the built-up manufacturing capabilities that Apple needs. The kicker will come if Tatsunoko decides not to renew Mospeada or Southern Cross. Those 2 shows are free from any legal issues.

To be fair, HG doesn't have to mention BW's involvement that much as that would likely add fuel to Tatsunoko's fire. This filing relates more to the arbitration with a healthy dose of backstory to fill in the gaps of why HG is suing Tatsunoko (Thanks for all the juicy bits of info, HG). Does this sour the relationship between Tatsunoko and HG? Dunno. Depends. And 2021 is still a ways to go. Will Tatsunoko file their brief with the court? Dunno. We'll see. Did HG pay their share (if any) of the arbitration costs? If so, how much? Did Tatsunoko see that as repayment for defending their claim against Big West? Hence, in Tatsunoko's eyes, HG hasn't paid their share of the arbitration costs (legal fees, etc), if any. Has HG shared revenue from RT sales with Tatsunoko to compensate them for exploiting the license? If Tatsunoko can show they paid HG the costs of the arbitration and any other amount they owe HG, then that pulls the rug out from under HG's feet. Now, Tatsunoko could pay the fees, then come 2021, re-negotiate a licensing deal which favors them or they would end the current licensing deal. If we want to be petty.
