  1. 'Heard a story from family about millennials in their office giving blank stares when asked to get a letterhead sheet. My face: So I feel your pain/grumpiness/get-off-my-lawn. So did that kaiju at the end super sentai-gattai?
  2. Confirmed now. http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/03/entertainment/tom-petty-obit/index.html
  3. Regardless, Enterprise's theme sequence made a hell of a lot more sense than Discovery's. Hell, every Star Trek opening theme sequence has made much more sense until Discovery came along.
  4. Disney To End Distribution Agreement With Netflix, Launch Streaming Service It will start in 2019 beginning with the movies and likely work it's way down the pipeline over time.
  5. Relative to time & technology, use, pilot, etc. A machine made 50 years after the original could be light years better, but that's a product of time. A bomber can carry more ordnance than a superiority fighter. Pilots could pull maneuvers in older jets that modern jets would have difficulty doing. Newer may not mean better. So when people say "the best", I say relative to what.
  6. But the corollary to this is, subscriptions went up and app downloads rose. Star Trek: Discovery’ Drives CBS Mobile App Downloads Up by 64% (Study) So relative to the situation, looks like they might come out even. But as I mentioned, Disney is launching their own streaming service and you don't even need to bet that will have their own original content (likely ABC's content will be rolled into this too). This is, unfortunately, going to be, the norm soon. Deny and hate it all you want.
  7. "Best" is relative.
  8. Of course. People are already paying for Netflix, Amazon, (now that Handmaid's Tale won an Emmy, Hulu). Disney is getting into this stupid mix soon. We're paying for all this subscription madness. Who wouldn't pirate these shows?
  9. I'd probably watch episode 2 as it appears to be a 2-part pilot. That being said.... After watching the first 2 episodes...I'm still confused about the premise of this show. Opening theme/sequence: I'm not sure what I'm supposed to get out of watching the visuals. Every Star Trek opening sequence had some takeaway from the visuals. Is this supposed to be a blueprint or something? The theme is fine until the TOS chords play at the end, then it just sounds weird. Discovery's design seems to fit a pattern with the ships in this show. So I let that go but it still, it feels like it has too many sharp edges, especially on the Drive-section. Now for spoilery stuff...
  10. Do you get a chicken dinner if you win a round in Fortnite? If it does, I would say it's copying. Otherwise, PubG's notion of a claim is malarkey. It's a battle royale-type game. You could claim that any battle royale game is a ripoff of survival deathmatch-type games. The building structures aspect and property destruction feels like an interesting concept to bring into the game.
  11. This is true. This is just diligence on HG's lawyers. Tatsunoko has yet to pay the arbitration costs. It doesn't appear as if there are any financial troubles on either side, Tatsunoko just doesn't want to fork over the cash. When a renewal comes up, HG would likely want to maintain a "sweetheart" deal at bargain prices but considering how long Tatsunoko let the deal go for, Tatsunoko likely wants more out of the deal in this day and age.
  12. From what I've read, the main problem is filming in Winter, which means production didn't start until August this year (Filming is supposed to start in October). They can't film until late-December to February for those Winter shots. Then comes the complexity of production which will likely take up to 11 months after filming (based of Season 7's production timeline).
  13. I imagine that will be the case. While Tatsunoko has been getting a (almost) free ride from HG, I don't think they had much say in what HG has done with their property. And they've had much leverage in getting more money with HG. On the other side, Big West has enjoyed the lime-light of all the Macross sequels. I imagine Tatsunoko will want to change that among many things with how they license their properties.
  14. They could. But I wouldn't expect Tatsunoko to sell SDFM to Big West and/or Bandai without retaining something for themselves. As I mentioned, I wouldn't be surprised if Tatsunoko (or the majority stake-holders) decided to reign in the IPs and repatriate their earnings. Not selling the rights is an option as much as renewing the rights with HG.
  15. So, as I see it, HG can do the following: -Push the RT movie now and push hard. To that I say good luck. I'm still not watching it. Never really cared to watch it anyways. -Let the license die in 2021. While this would force them to create their own IP and restrict them less, they would need to spend more brain cells making a better product. And one that would not infringe on copyright now (Not just trademarks). -Renegotiate the license. This would be the best option, but the ball is in Tatsunoko's court for this one. Tatsunoko has options here (which I'll get to). At this point, HG would probably ask for the same or more rights. I'm not sure Tatsunoko would give up more rights (nor would it be in their best interest). -Renegotiate for a per-show license. This would be cheaper and they could cherry pick, but it closes some options for them. But they would still get certain things to exploit. But the ball is still in Tatsunoko's court with this. I see Tatsunoko's options as: -Tatsunoko can ask (and should) ask for more money if a renewal comes up. If I were Tatsunoko and HG approached me to renew, I would factor in the amount Tatsunoko thinks HG owes them from all those litigations into a new license just to stick it to HG. Tatsunoko can play hardball and say that's the terms now. I'm sure Tatsunoko has run the numbers on how much they have gotten over the years from this license. Does the incoming royalties outweigh anything they could do on their own? I don't know and most of us don't work for Tatsunoko so that's a hard question to answer. -Tatsunoko can decline the license renewal. They could go on their own and bring these 3 shows to online platforms and other outlets. They could sub-license to Bandai, get these shows subbed and bring them to limited runs on Youtube or any other platform. This would keep the profits "closer to home". They could look at how well the Gundam-model of having shows air in Japan then have them uploaded to Youtube after the initial airing goes. Our they could approach Crunchyroll or other outlets. -Tats could only license certain shows. They could license Macross and Mospeda, but only because it would likely turn a profit. But I'm sure Tatsunoko would have new terms this time around. Not the huge blanket they did in the 1980s. Or both sides agree to the same terms at modern pricing, but if Tatsunoko wants to reign in control of their IPs, I don't think this would happen.
  16. Yah. Harmony Gold's Macross, Mospeada, Southern Cross Licenses Still Expire in 2021 Thread MERGE!
  17. *Looks at username on Tweet*. Oh. It's "that" user.
  18. Yeah, we've been hinting/mentioning/basically writing their plot for them so they should really pay us this since they announced they sold off the live-action rights. It's very easy for them to take a rough outline of the Macross-portion of the series, strip out all the stuff that made it Macross and you have your generic "spaceship lands on Earth and humans exploit it then the aliens come back to claim their property"-plot. We've been saying this for years. If they want RT to survive, they need write out the Macross-y stuff (and bare necessities of Southern Cross and Mospeada), take the bare bones and start from scratch with their own IP. This movie is their way out. It's always been.
  19. Let me clarify. I wouldn't want to bring a personal laptop behind the Great Firewall of China unless I planned on reformatting it when I get back. Hence, I would use the company laptop and let the IT department deal with it when I get back.
  20. Nice. But I would have used the company laptop and have the IT department burn it when you come back.
