The computer and electronics super geek thread
Archer replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Well, I've purchased the retina model, which I believe does have its advantages, for me at least. Portability is an issue for me, and the rMBP is not only remarkably thin, but light as well. 17 inches is just way to large/heavy for me. Also, I'd like to add the fact that the retina display, anyway you look at it, is a huge bonus. As for the removable battery, it doesn't bother me much, but yes, I guess it may be a problem later down the road. The retina does have HDMI output as you said, and has 2 USB 3.0 ports, which is enough for most people. And to jam all that in such an elegant and thin form factor most likely drives up cost. I'm not sugercoating macs as cheap, their definitely not, but you do very much get some advantages with them. As for the lack of a 10 key, it's not really that bug a deal, and the glass trackpad is light years ahead of many pc options I've seen. Blue ray player? I had one on my old laptop and rarely used it. Tbh, I never really even use a disc drive. If I need blu ray, I'd use a ps3, but I guess that's of more importance to you than me. I think we are approaching this in very different angles. Raw power and tech seem to be your concern, whilst i'm more interested in form factor and display. It's not surprising we don't agree. -

Any plans to release larger fall of cybertron toys? I really LOVE the designs in the game, but hate how small the figs are, all as deluxes. It would be nice to see optimus/grimlock/megatron as at least voyager class sizes, especially since deluxe sizes are rapidly shrinking....- 17372 replies

What's so bad about the form factor of a MacBook? I think it looks pretty spiffy compared to my windows laptops (this is my first mac ever). But I guess that's more of a personal opinion. And I really don't think it's fair to say it has the same specs as a 1000 dollar laptop. A retina screen, 16 GB RAM, an Ivy Bridge Processor, NVidia GeForce GT 650, and around 500 GB SSD all in a shell that is almost as thin as a macbook air. Come on, that's hard to beat by laptop standards today! -

Yeah, I hear you. I make sure to add a lot of security [Norton] to my windows computers (A desktop and two laptops), but I don't bother to do anything with the Nexus 7, iPhone, or iPad. As for the Mac, I've yet to really experience much of a malware issue yet, but we'll see how long that lasts. As for Mac being an open door, Apple seems to be improving with OS X mountain lion, but obviously it's still not as secure as a dedicated program. I'm just worried though, cuz I'd rather not have a 2400 dollar laptop destroyed by malware..... -

Do you guys suggest any malware protection for Mac? I know Mac has gatekeeper already installed as an inherent part of the OS, and I don't really frequent malware prone sites, but still, is it worth it? I have access to Norton free, which is why I'm asking, but I'd rather not fill up the computer with unnecessary programs. -
I used to not be very big about apple a couple years ago, but I've really become a believer. I used to see them as overpriced, but nowadays, I like the stuff apple has been putting out, paving fields. I even ponied up and bought a retina macbook, which is by far and away the best computer I've ever owned. I agree with you that iOS can get to be boring, but a lot of people actually like its simplicity and, tbh, polished interface, lacking may hiccups that have plagued Android. That said, with Jelly Bean (I have a nexus 7), things do seem to be shaping up for Google. We'll see in the future I guess. For now, it seems like Apple is impenetrable....

"Microsoft Surface" or "Nexus 7" are both pretty popular right now, with the surface coming out in october. Although if you want to get something like an iPad, why not get an iPad? haha

I recall during the initial forum discussions regarding the VF-19 kai that it was stated that the actual molds in which the plastic is poured are designed to only acomodate a "shiny" finish. So if they're still using the same mold, which I'm sure they are, albeit with a little re-tooling, then the end result will stay shined. Sorry man, I like the matte finishes too

Haha, 24k a semester is nothing. I'm on scholarship right now. The full price of Vanderbilt including board is around 67k a year not including transportation and computer fees. But yeah, you can see why toys have lost some weightage in my life... But yeah, if you have enough cash to freely spend, I'd go for it too...

I too am in the "principles" boat, especially as a college student. $400 dollars is a LOT of cash to pony up for a piece of plastic that will ultimately just sit on the shelf in my dorm, accomplishing very little save for the time to time transformation. My upper limit was around $300, but now, deeper into college, I find myself always weighing the options. $400 dollars means some books for classes, money to save for tuition, even productive tech like a tablet or computer programs, even laundry money. To further the perspective, when you're paying $24,000 per semester for college, high end toys really do take a back burner. It's a really cool toy mind you, but I think I can understand what a lot of people are going through, be it college or other expenses. But then again, this is macrossworld, so who am I kidding?

All Things Videogame Related: EXTREME VS!!

Just got a new Xbox 360, and whilst the hardware, as far as I can tell, can't match some of the PS3 exclusives block for block, microsoft REALLY makes up in the online services department. The way they tackle online media and multiplayer gaming really makes that 60 bucks worth it. As a ps3 veteran since launch, are there any xbox games that I need to pick up that i've missed? Already bought Ace Combat 6 and Gears of War- 6945 replies

So, are there any plans to make a larger scale and more awesome figure of fall of cybertron optimus? That's one of the best renditions of optimus I've seen, and the scrawny little deluxe figure just doesn't do it for me....- 17372 replies

anyway you can play this on a mac without downloading windows? I don't have access to my PS3 right now, and I don't really want to buy windows for my mac. Anyway to get fall of cybertron regardless? Thanks!- 17372 replies

I'd like to see more obscure valks like the VF-2ss made, even as wesclusives like the vf-4. If the vf-4 is successful, yamato should have more justification to make stuff like this

Picked up a nexus 7 16 GB. Really REALLY nice tablet for a $250 asking price. The $25 free google play money, $10 google wallet cash, and access to some new books, songs, and Transformers Dark of the Moon is icing on the proverbial cake. The stock jelly bean with its "Project Butter" is extremely crisp and "buttery" to use, with the machine responding quickly. Unfortunately, they haven't been able to reproduce the refinement and reliability of iOS as I still found a couple hickups, but it really is well done for the asking price. Google must be making little to no money on these things, especially the 8 GB one.... -
When is the pricing information supposed to be announced? Thanks

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
Archer replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I was watching Gundam AGE till about the end of the second generation. Has it got better/picked up from there, and is it worth the revisit? -
lol, I got a perfect grade wing gundam when I was an 8 year old. Never could figure out the electronics but I built the thing fairly well. I too would suggest a hi-metal if you can find one for cheap (which is quite hard these days).

If anyone still wants one, mine's up for sale 210 USD shipped in U.S. PM for details

I believe that Macross 7 is much more popular than Macross Zero in Japan.

I really wish Nolan had went with Warner Bros. recommendation to cast the villain as the Riddler and have him played by Decaprio. Riddler seems somewhat similar to the "fun" factor that the joker had, but with a vastly different character, etc. Would have been a bit more fun, and I'm sure they could have tied some similar themes in if they wanted. I was just too detached from the Bane character to really care about him, whereas I was in tune completely with Joker's performance. Finally, anyone check out the Hot Toys "the Bat"? It looks larger than their tumbler, hope it won't cost more than a 1000 dollars....

My deepest condolences to those affected by the midnight shooting. I went to the 9 hour marathon of all three movies leading up to the midnight premiere, and I'm devestated just thinking about such an act. Anyways, it was a GREAT movie! After watching the first two consecutively, I was really pumped up, and I could more easily see little innuendos to the previous movies more easily in the third. Thought the pacing of DKR was a little slow at first, but it really proves itself in the last 20 minutes or so. I don't know about the movie in its entirety, but that definetely was the best trilogy conclusion and standalone movie ending I've ever seen. It does well to leave things a bit open for those who want to pick up on a 4th movie after Nolan....
