    Macross Revoltech

    I have to agree VFTF-1. The strength of the Revoltechs is by far the customization one can achieve with the joints. You can actually pull them apart and make them flex even further in many cases, which is excellent when building specific poses. That's why I'm so skeptical of the articulation claims of the GNU static joints. Sure the GNU joints look as good as any Master Grade Gundam, but like I've said before, the Revoltech system has proven superior, in practice. I'm just stunned when someone posts "My Revoltech can't do this or it can't pose like that". I recognize that like any toy, the Revoltechs have limitations. But in my opinion, most people aren't even trying. I KNOW what my Revoltech VF-1 is capable of and it can achieve more than any other toy I've ever seen. Maybe what I should do is post a Revoltech primer on the M3, in the For Fans Only section. Imagination required I also think miriya has a point. I'm much happier with the way the Yamato GNU toys turned out. I've definitely sweetened towards the figures and I'm glad to see that some of my early concerns about the GNU toys turned out favorably in the end. I might pick one up, especially just to do a comparison. No offense to any GNU fans, but most of the Revoltech/GNU comparisons I've read here are from members of the staunch anti-Revoltech crowd. While I appreciate our different preferences, these product reviews don't do me a whole lot of good as a satisfied Revoltech customer trying to compare the relative strengths of each product. I also haven't a clue what the whole anti-PVC thing is supposed to be about. I think that complaint is rapidly turning into another Macross World special, much like the now infamous "small hands" cry of lameness At any rate, more Macross products is only a good thing in my mind. As the consumer, I'm the one who ultimately wins from all these companies in the mix
  2. Zinwobbly It depends on the combat conditions. In Macross Frontier, it appears Ozuma used his full missile load to it's utmost advantage with a total ordnance launch. In Macross 7, Kinryu's VF-11 Protect Armor launch devastated an entire squad of Varauta. On the other hand some examples like like Hikaru's VF-1J Armored Valkyrie fight or Roy's VF-0S Reactive Armor Valkyrie launch weren't all that effective despite their impressive fireworks I just watched episode 49 over again and City 7 isn't shown with a barrier. Mylene in her VF-11MAXL Custom Sound Booster is shown creating a sound energy shield around City 7, but that's all. There is dialog in the early part of episode 49 that mentions the decreasing power of the pin-point barriers on the Battle 7, but no mention of the Full Barrier. I pretty much have to stick to what is shown in the anime until some example changes it. I'd like to believe that when the newer Full Barrier systems yield they don't lead to a catastrophic overload. But until a Macross anime features a scene to the contrary, we have to assume the two instances of the barrier overload from SDF Macross are still indicative of the Full Barrier system. Just to note, perhaps the danger of the Full Barrier system is why we never see it in operation. Master Dex They were indeed very useful. I'd initially forgotten about the outboard launchers as well, but it looks like we've reached a final count. Impressive to say the least.
  3. Been through some discussions and pouring over footage from Macross Frontier to come up with a reasonably accurate missile count for the VF-25S Messiah Full Armor. There are inconsistencies between episode 2 and episode 7, but I've gone with episode 7 simply because the Full Armor variant was presented clearly and uniformly in the big attack sequence by Ozuma. That's definitely a new record for a Macross valkyrie. Previous valkyries had the following missile counts: VF-0 Phoenix Full Armor = 50 missiles + 6 grenades. VF-1J GBP-1S Armored Valkyrie = 56 missiles + 18 armor-penetrating projectiles + 6 grenades. VF-11C Thunderbolt Protect Armor = 84 missiles

    Macross Revoltech

    I think a lot of the posing problems comes from the fact that people don't know how to pose the Revoltech figures or just don't bother learning. Once you understand how they work, the Revoltechs can achieve almost any pose, from subtle to wild. IMO, the reason most Revoltechs look so damn cool is because they appear stylish in many of the now classic "line art style" stances, like the "VF-1 with Gun Pod held up" stance. I also don't really understand why anyone would purchase an "action" figure if they wanted it for some "assembly line" style pose with all right angles. I mean, that's exactly the kind of thing we want to avoid in toy. Every piece of line art I've ever seen has the Valkyries in an A stance with the feet in a V, not frozen like a corpse with the toes pointed straight forward. If I wanted that, I'd just buy a 20 year old Bandai chunky
  5. On the contrary, Gubaba is correct. Characters in the later Macross sequels have clearly described non-VF-1 variable fighters as "Valkyries". There are several instances of characters describing the variable fighters as "Valkyries" in Macross 7 and Leon describes the Vajra's energy converting armor as similar to that of the "Valkyries" in Macross Frontier. I've actually made a note of this on my website.
  6. That's okay. You may have actually gone through it already and didn't even realize the arrestor hooks were there. It's not like they stand out and grab the onlookers attention. I think those two drawings are the only time the hooks are ever seen, so they are easy to miss.

  11. There's always things that can be improved. I won't be happy until some company builds a VF-1 with the articulation of a Revoltech, the sculpts of the Hasegawa models and a perfect transformation system that accomodates the least design compromises between the modes. Keep working I say. For now, the New 1/60 scale VF-1 by Yamato is as good as I've ever seen it. It's got my vote
  12. Indeed there is: Arrestor hooks deployed at the rear of the VF-1 The VF-0 Phoenix also hase a single arrestor hook that runs along the ventral side of the auxillary thruster pack.   13. The scene between Guld in his YF-21 and Isamu in his VF-11 was done more for dramatic purposes that anything else. Still, it's clear the scene in questions was done during mid-transformation and then slowed to a crawl for dramatic effect. So there wasn't anything necessarily wrong with the way the cockpit opened and transformed, just a bit of creative license to make the emotion notes hits on cue. As for most Valkyrie cockpits, they just rotate forward or rearward for Battroid mode and the additional controls/monitors unfold from the rear and sides of the existing cockpit, much like Dio and Master Dex have described. Each vehicle profile on my website features line art of the cockpit interiors. If you look at them closely you can see some of the seats on rotating mounts with pistons to properly position the cockpit seat. The original VF-1 TV series cockpits appear to take a bit more creative license with respect to the size of the Battroid mode cockpit interior. The later VF-1 "Block 6" Battroid cockpits as seen in DYRL? are much more confined and typical what one would expect. The VF-1 "Block 6" cockpits are also much more efficient and feature an increased number of much larger viewing monitors, no doubt a template for what would eventually become the VF-11 Battroid cockpit.
  14. The vernier thrusters? All the valkyries have them, so they'd be an ideal way for the Valkirye to both take off and land with very little runway.

  17. Great episode. I agree there was definitely a Planet of the Apes-like feel when they found "Earth" in ruins, but I kinda like it. I've always got the impression that the series is trying to say something about the humans and the Cylons as a people, so it only tracks that actually reaching Earth is not the end of their journey. That, and it's only halfway through the season, so you know more is coming

  19. Y denotes a Prototype craft, while V means "Variable", as in Variable Fighter, hence "VF" The Macross Compendium has an excellent Glossary section that has all the little acronyms used in Macross.

  25. I agree that automation is likely involved in the control scheme. The statistics do mention "Super AI" control avionics in the YF-19 fighter and there are motion sensitive controls on the throttle and stick. Perhaps there are some other systems involved as well, but I think they need something to help control the craft. Like you said, there's simply too many controls for one person to handle fast and efficiently, epseically at the speed we see the valkyries move in the show. I think plausibility is stretched the most for complex maneuvers in Battroid mode. How would one perform some of the maneuvers that Max does in his VF-1A or how would you do Isamu's flying kick in the YF-19? For that matter, how would Alto and Brera manage to lock fingers between the hands on the VF-25 and VF-27? How would you even throw a punch or a kick (or how about blocking said blows) with the controls they use? Even if the valkyries are automated to a large degree by AI systems, it's hard to imagine how they would achieve these maneuvers.
