electric indigo Posted May 8 Posted May 8 They could have leaned more towards the design of the illustration IMO, but 1/20 is too small for my ageing eyes anyway.

Dr_Breen Posted June 7 Posted June 7 Since I started reading Insight, ive resumed work on my Supersylph. Its been quite awhile since last and my skills have improved alot+developed new ones, so still frustrated with my previous attempts to give her cockpit detail, I decided to go at it again from the top. I vacformed, rather than crash formed, new canopys from the kit plugs again, and really let the plastic sheet sag and relax, then pulled vacuum for like 12 full seconds. The canopys came out MUCH better, albeit with a few blems from presumably dust particles or such, which Im willing to live with. Then I 3d modelled in Plasticity basic representations of the cockpit panel/dash and seats, referenced from the concept art drawing of the Supersylph cockpit, scaled off the 3-view art which is available, and modified/simplified to fit the highly constrained area of the bored out cockpit slots in the kit - such as, instead of making sidewalls and side panels, then locating the stick and throttle on them, I placed representations of the controls on extensions of the dash, which isnt the layout of the ""real"" thing lol But after printing and install these look fairly good under the canopys, which will be gently tinted with tamiya smoke anyway. I also redid my old swept blade fan intakes from the past but in much higher fidelity. I mixed up some Tamiya Quick type and repaired her damaged dogtooth wing points (not the best putty user but its hard to notice and certainly looks better than busted tips), filled a few small resin blems and and voids, after sitting overnight I blended the putty in with increasing grits and polished with like a 10k or 12k pad While getting her gear on I found that my kit came with a duplicate set of main gear legs but only one main gear side stay/brace, I didnt feel like trying to measure, design and print a close one so the spares box came to the rescue, i dont remember what the gear spares where from lol I build almost everything gear down, maybe alternate options from something. Then I primed her, speckle/mottle coated. Agonized over the damn belly color for like a whole day, every source is contradictory, but the alleged duck egg green doesnt seem to match up with any shots of Supers in the show or art, its at most a greenish teal, but in a lot of shots (maybe cause of the lighting and Faery's teal as opposed to blue sky) it appears more powder blue, pastelish even, or like the RAF PRU blue, sky type S with blue in it, etc. Anyway I went with an eyeballed mix of Vallejo Intermediate blue grey, then a few drops of sky type S to lighten and add the hint of green, this was still pretty dark and grey, so I added a good squirt of Faded PRU blue, which got me close enough I think, its definitely light and greyer than on screen, but still has some blue and I think, crucially, looks better/more believable than the supposed duck egg, and a bit more subtle than the show's more vivid coloration. I went with Ocean Grey as a base on top and Dark grey blue for the camo splotches, which on its own even sprayed gently and thinned was much too contrasty and dark against ocean grey, so I misted some thinned ocean grey back over and unified them, I think the blending and softening effect looks good, however Im concerned that overall the top tones, specifically ocean grey are still too light and I should maybe try to filter them darker? But on the flip side, no washes or weather have been applied yet, and even with careful oils pinwashing, it will darken her appearance somewhat, what does the thread think of the top color greys?
Dr_Breen Posted June 7 Posted June 7 Just finished Insight, first half was a little slow, but it heavily explained the growing understanding between yukikaze and humans besides Rei. After the operations commence, it is a series of intense revelations about the nature and goals of the combat intelligences, Yukikaze, Cooley and the SAF, and especially Jam and Rombert. The closing sequence is fascinating and intense.
electric indigo Posted June 7 Posted June 7 You did an amazing job on the cockpits, it's a great upgrade for the kit. It still dazzles me that Platz didn't deliver here, especially at the current price tag. The top color looks a little too light to me in your pics - here are the colors sheets from the animation studio:
Dr_Breen Posted June 14 Posted June 14 Thank you much! The pits turned out nicely, better than I expected, hopefully when it comes time to final fit the canopies I can get them seated well. Also, yes! I decided that the dorsal paint was too light so I misted a very thin intermediate grey overall and it toned up nicely, still not quite as dark as the stills and art would suggest, but closer for sure. Ive since masked and sprayed the white markings and such, the lighter contrasting colors tone it down a bit more too. I also think, having finished insight, and there being no mention of Carmilla being downed, Im gonna go with 502, Carmilla for my Supersylph, should be an easy enough decal edit. Might even design and print a small decal for somewhere upforward in stylized english the name, since the folklore Vampire Carmilla is an Irish thing, naturally the name would be in english. Im pretty sure there are no other D models shown in the SAF in the show, but the books as far as I know dont specify a difference in super sylphs, so Carmilla being a D model doesnt bother me, Im kind of fusing book and show vibes a bit lol.
electric indigo Posted August 8 Posted August 8 Still trying to wrap my head around Yamashita's crazy shapes.

Maybe you can use this
jammaker Posted September 17 Posted September 17 It prints out nicely as a decal and has an inbuilt alpha channel. noticed you were going to do one yourself. this is from the Fairy air force at war manual.

electric indigo Posted September 17 Posted September 17 Yes and yes 😄 It's a great kit, but not for beginners, and pretty much in the expensive zone.

Dr_Breen Posted September 23 Posted September 23 Ive got designer's note and the Yukikaze Kaiseki manual, didnt know there was another? Does it have more of the SAF emblems in it?
jammaker Posted September 29 Posted September 29 Yeah there is a couple. The Cyun yan or translated spring swallow, Carmilla, Zouk, and Apsaras. there is no art for any others and possibly isn't meant to be, besides Yukikaze. but I am currently working on a decal for minx as this is the unit in episode 3 guarding Banshee 4. and affectionately named in honor of second lieutenant Anastasiya Kovalevskaya. the Ukrainian long haired blond of the unit. Will try to make it ethereal and sexy at the same time as it goes with the fairy theme and will pair with Carmilla. then i will colourize Cyun Yan. The others are in colour so we have the correct look for Zouk and Apsaras. Iv'e been researching Japanese Spring swallows and they have a red patch on their neck with a black and white body. And if i'm feeling generous will post them all here with an alpha channel. by the way; Open carmilla in photoshop and print from there as i noticed it is quite ugly on screen on the forum, but will print very nicely as i said previously. adjust the size of the print in the print settings by percent. Don't shrink the pic itself and it will turn out sharp and crisp. For those with white ink printers (If you have one I most likely don't need to tell you anyway) but make a copy of the decal that you can completely desaturate to pure white. Then print that out and lay it down first so that the colour decal is bright with the true colour when laid over the top. enjoy!!

Getting a copy of the series is most affordable on the second hand market, as the company Gonzo and flying dog was dissolved into Bandai visual after going bankrupt a few years ago now. Are you asking because you are interested in seeing it for yourself? When the series first came out the novels hadn’t been translated yet so the series was all we had which was great. But it was when we could finally delve into the books that Kambayashi’s genius was revealed. To see the series you should watch the videos, then read both English novels, then watch the series again. But I warn you, just like the librarian in the never ending story. You’ll never be the same…..

As one who has read the original NeverEnding Story in book form, that's a very succinct way to describe the differences.

I watched a couple of episodes back when it first came out but never finshed it. I didn't even know there were English novels. Will have to check if they are available fior KIndle.

jammaker Posted October 3 Posted October 3 I downloaded my copies on books for iPhone shouldn't be to much of a hassle to find them.
electric indigo Posted October 3 Posted October 3 Regarding the books, I feel like I should re-iterate my experience from 14 years ago... On 11/11/2011 at 10:55 AM, electric indigo said: Ok I made it through the second book and still wonder if it is really badly written or my brain is too small to grasp the brilliance of it. The novel goes straight into the pitfall of SF literature and throws a metric shitload of exposition at the reader on every page. And most of it is delivered by the already underdeveloped characters, who also happen to reason about food and beaverages occasionally (no pineapple salad, though). The inter-military conspiracies deliver some suspense, but then again end up in endless exposition & dialogue. If the author feels he has discussed one aspect long enough, he draws another card from his hat, so that the reader never gets really involved with the story, but watches the narrator do his thing. Now as much as I hate by-the-numbers storytelling, this one had benefitted from a tighter concept and better use of the somewhat interesting characters. In a bad light, it looks like an aircraft nerd's attempt to re-invent Solaris. On the plus side, it has a (supposedly) interesting concept of conflict with the aliens, and some epic scenes like the prelude to the second entry into the Mysterious Battle Zone.
jammaker Posted Tuesday at 02:05 PM Posted Tuesday at 02:05 PM Okay don't be too harsh on my artwork. I know there is no official Super sylph MINX motivator on unit 506. But if there was and General Booker had a soft spot for this one as kind of the squad mascot. would he send over to System command and commission some art for the inside of the vertical stabilizers? it's a fan fiction what if. So this is what it means- Minx Share definition An alluring, cunning, or boldly flirtatious girl or young woman. Has unusual seductive powers such that she could commit acts that would otherwise be considered inappropriate, while still maintaining an air of class or poise.
jammaker Posted Tuesday at 02:21 PM Posted Tuesday at 02:21 PM The woman represents no. 506 super sylph in the intelligence gathering, Special Air Service of the FAF. Code name MINX. her open and alluring posture represents her names meaning. The tarps unit attached to her, is a reminder that despite her alluring curves she is a deadly threat, ever vigilant and ever watching. Sealed with a kiss for luck or the kiss of death. If anyone would like this as a decal i'll put it up
