Queadluun Rau's cockpit

I've long since lost my Perfect Memory Ed., but from the plethora of scans, posts & diagrams(as well as the input of a certain past member), I have to go w/the motorcycle seat scenario. The glaring anomaly of how the Meltran would be able to physically straddle the gap between the suits legs & hip joints rules out the "legs-in upper-thigh" solution. The mechs "crotch" would have to be unbelievably narrow to allow the pilot to slide both legs into each armoured leg, let alone allow range of motion.

My familiarity with A & P & some ergonomics really makes it hard for me to envision the powersuit walking, jumping and doing that reflex/tuck missile salvo while keeping the Meltran's hips connected to her legs. She'd be crushed raising her knees.

In the "What's next from Yamato" permanent header thread(I think in Toys Forum), this discussion took place about the 1/60 Qeaud. I piped in that

my experiences w/ onna no Nihon(Japanese ladies) was that they could remain in 'sai za' and frog-squat position for HOURS w/out apparent discomfort. This is analogous to a motorcycle tuck and also a simple solution to discrepancies in mecha dimensions vs. limits of human articulation & flexibility, and risks of battle damage to limbs extended outside the torso frame.

I also remember someone posting one of the lineart diagrams in the same thread with a recessed view from the depths of the cockpit-out, that one could make out the curved cushioning area for the shins for a straddling pilot.

Heh, what is the difference in DYRL and SDF versions of the Q-rau gonna be explained by the continuity people? They claim the VF-1 differences are that between block numbers or the VF-1X model represented in the "movie in a movie" (ignoring the whole retcon that is...)...

But maybe the "other [Zentran/Meltran] fleets" have done upgrades, too? ;)

Woo hoo. Info on the Yammie Q-rau... Wonder if this "pilot" is gonna be posable or not. What do you *think*, Graham? Don't have to reveal the skinny, but how would you *think* it would go? Though if you have skinny and are free to reveal it, then please by all means do so. :)

I have had a chance to closely examine Yamato's Q-Rau, although only the mecha, not the pilot figure, which wasn't ready at the time.

Based on the Yamato toy, there is no way that the pilots legs could fit into the mecha's thighs. However, it does appear as if they fit into the back section of the mecha.

Graham

Graham,

thanks for answer. Yamato has based some of their toys designs in preexistent Macross resin model kits, so I wouldnt be surprised they followed the Yellow Sub QR model design for positioning the pilot. ;)

Vespaeda:

I'm glad to see this is an ongoing debate!! Here we have the saddle-like seat again!! Though the idea of the pilot seated in sai za position is really interesting I can´t see how that could fit with the Gold Book artline.

I know we can´t see the kness of the pilot in that pic but: if she were on her kness the artist should have drawn her ankles and the lower part of the legs, didn't he?

BTW: the QRs are seated for storage?? I thought that those were toilets!!! :D:D:lol:

For the legs I think it would be very unconfortable to put legs inside the backpack. Try to be in that position for more than 30 seconds, you'll get the idea. The back is completely folded. It's not a natural position. Also for the neck, pilot would have to bend her neck completely to have her head vertical. What do you think?

I think that comfort isn't a priority in an anime's power armor / weapon in general :p

Yes, after seeing your avatar, I know why you like female pilot to suffer from non confortable flight ;)

While they I know you didn't get to see the figure itself, were you able to ask if it was going to be articulated?

I think the intention in the original drawings and concept was indeed to have the pilots legs extend into the mech legs.

from the design and look of it, it seems obvious ( i like the explination that the high knees on the Rau are so that the joints will match with the pilot)

but those were happier simpler times of morphing 2d animation where anything will fit anywhere.

now with the action figure out, and showing that the "legs in legs" design doesn't work with the proportions given, i think the cannon is shifting to having the legs in the backpack.

remember that if something doesn't work. it will be changed. macross cannon isn't as set in stone as some might think.

personally i like the "legs in legs" design. i think it's slick. but i bet its not feezable.

wow, that's interesting, a variable glaug and a regult :p

I don't think the zentrans are those size, otherwise it would be impossible to fit on the regult 'head'

For the pilot position in a queadluun rau's, I think a screenshot from DYRL could help a bit, when a meltran pilot got shot and she crawls out of the suit just before she dies.

I still think the legs are meant to go into the legs.

The only reason the legs go into the backpack is because making a small scale, poseable toy/ sturdy, accurate model which includes a non-poseable pilot figure is to keep the pilots legs out of the way- Hence, into the backpack.

When the 1/55's were made, did the design concept of the VF-1 suddenly change to accomodate the toy's clumsily large swing bars? No.

The legs in backpack adaption of the toys and models are simply that, an adaptation, and, IMHO, in no way effect the canoninity (is that a word?) of the original design.

proly in reference of the gay mecha porn of rodavan's image.

Anyways I belive the pilots legs proly does goes in the backpack or maybe the ladies got exctreme flexibilty and bend their legs in wild positions which might explain why max left the macross in the meltran ship in dyrl. ;)

All I did was post some cockpit and pilot positions pics of the glaug and regult, becouse Morpheus had siad somthing about them not fitting in there, but I releazied after I posted that my pics were to big, off topic and I could not get them to resize so I gave up a edited my posts. Thats all. MECH PORN

  • 2 weeks later...

Watching Episode 12 Millia climbs on, jumps in, and goes straight down. She does not move like she's putting her legs into a over sized pair of boots - her legs in the mecha's legs- so her legs either go into the backpack or she's sitting on something. Maybe when the next Design Works book comes out we'll know more. That is assuming ofcourse that it does come out.mumble mumble mumble cus cus cus

Skull One, sorry for troubling you with all the post about the glaug and regult cockpit :( .

Back to topic, from the pic above I'm sure that the leg went to the leg section of the Rau's. <_< (confusing isn't it).
