Are movie audiences ready?

Well...knowing how a majority of American audiences are when it comes to movies, I think they would find it ridiculous and would reject the idea, but a film like that would end up being a cult film in the end.

Hey thanks for that, I'm from New York...yeah I get it, "America Sucks". Can I jump on that train?

I must be the exception to the rule since I've enjoyed Macross since I was a child.

Hey, I'm an American too, I'm basing this off of what I know from being overseas and the way most people react to ideas and opinions from differing cultures. I can easily say that Americans are some of the most ignorant people in the world. God, some Homotech fans are in denial that Macross was what started it all for them.

If you want to blast Hollywood that's good times. If you want to blast certain Robotech fans that can be fun too. When you start saying rubbish like "Americans are some of the most ignorant people in the world" you only expose how truly ignorant you are. Don't stereotype any group, it's dumb and classless.

Like I've said, from my experience overseas, most of the world does think of us as well ignorant and I have met some ignorant people in my line of work. I was kind of shocked myself. I'm not exactly stereotyping everybody, I know there are intelligent people out there, but certain concepts just will never fly with a majority of the population. I met a guy that doesn't believe that earthquakes are caused by shifts in the tectonic plates despite all the publications put forth since before some of us were born. I stand by my comment, so if you're offended, oh well. To each his own right? ;)

Okay everyone ease down, I think what the problem with many Americans is that they get trapped in whatever type of movies/music/outlook on life/whatever they like and don't take something for what it is and give it a chance. I say Americans because that is what I am and that's what I know, I'm sure it happens all over. Take me, there have been times when a friend of mine will bring one of their friends with them over to my place and sometimes you can see the double take as they look at my place. Why? Because to those who kinda know me, they may have met me at the shooting range and saw me drive off in my F150 and go from there on thinking what I'm like, then see that on one wall of my place I have all my tactical and hiking gear, and on another wall are racks of anime and manga. Many people will not watch something for any number of stupid (IMHO) reasons, maybe they don't like an actor's religious or political outlook. I have taken the time to sit many friends down and show they one anime or another and for the most part after they tried it, they liked it. So if people in the US don't get that Macross is as much if not more about music than mech and go to see it at the movies and are thinking that it is another 'Transformers' (nothing wrong with that movie, I love it) they probably will not like it, if they go with an open mind, maybe they will, maybe they won't but at least they gave it a chance.

Not trying to piss anyone off here just what I think on matters.

i foresee this thread getting closed. Any way I don't think Macross needs to be grab by any big movie study, if you are referring that they should make a life action movie that doing that would just cheapen the stories we all love.

Are Holywood audiences ready for a sci-fi epic space war movie that involves resolution through understanding/peace and singing like Macross? Would people reject the idea of song stopping war? How would audiences react?

The only resolution I remember in SDF Macross came at the end of big guns, variable fighters, and reaction missiles. The culture shock of Minmay and her music was a good way to divide and conquer the Zentradi, though.

Do you think they would've won without Minmay?

That depends on what you define as won, because in Macross they pretty much humanity was obliterated. Still yes they would have survived without her. Minmay wasn't what cause the culture shock it was just a central element for the story, human culture in general caused the culture shock. The question really is, if the Macross hadn't have the Miss Macross contest. Would humanity had survived?

Hmm...I disagree. I think Minmay, being the focal point for the culture shock, really was what kept the Macross alive. If it was just a battle of guns and missiles, the Macross would have been handily defeated...but having Minmay there gave the Zentradi a handle on culture, and an object of desire.

Just imagine if it had been a boy band instead of Minmay...the Macross would've been a goner for sure.

if it had been a boy band the Lapramis fleet would have been the first one to have the mutiny in instead of Bretai's

Enh, that might've worked in DYRL...but in the TV series they would've all been toasted by Bodolzaa's fleet.

But essentially, my point is that Minmay was more than just culture shock...I believe that she is THE reason why the Macross survived and won. In fact, I remember reading an article about (or an interview with) Carl Macek, where he said that he didn't believe American audiences would buy a "Singing Idol Saves Humanity" story, so in RT, she changed her into more of a cheerleader who would encourage the humans while confusing the Zentradi...which seems to be how Togo is viewing it.

Whether someone else could have done what Minmay did, I don't know. Probably, but that's not really important. This whole "peace and love in Macross" nonsense is very post-Macross 7, and perhaps some silliness left over from Robotech. The final victory over the Zentradi was won because the humans and their new Zentradi allies blew the hell out of Boddolezer's fleet.

Winning without Minmay and the culture shock would've been utterly impossible. You can speculate what the results would've been with another singer, but in a straight up fight without it, no matter how many reaction warheads, valks or guns the humans could've mustered there was no way they'd beat nearly 5 million focuesed zentradi vessels.

I am talking SDF- Macross if anything the Miss Macross contest was the turning point because the male fleet saw women in their special battle armors.

the impresion i had from DYRL was that the song was coded into their genetic make up as some kind of fail safe.

Showing the Zentrandi porn would had the same effect as Minmay did in the final battle againt the Bodolza fleet in the TV seire

I don't think anyone is arguing this. The question that was asked was, could someone else have done what she did? Probably, but its not really important. She did it, and the culture shock split the Zentradi forces and allowed the humans to defeat the rest of the fleet.

Ture...and that's a woefully unexplored aspect of Macross.

As for DYRL (the song, not the movie), I don't think there was anything deliberately encoded in it...as Misa said, it was "just a normal love song."

I mean during the exchange of Bretai with Exedore. Bretai feeling funny, Exedore thinking for a while and then responding "the culture in the genes of those used to creates us is awakening"

I don't think the majority of the US audience would appreciate a final battle resolution with music, mostly cause people will be missled by trailer that macross will be a war junkie dream, big explosion and stuff and people will go expecting a senseless action movie and in the end will not enjoy macross for what it really is

and also, adding a bit to the early discussion, I don't have anything against the US, but I HATE how they inisitently call themself 'Americans' last time I check, America was a continent with numerous countries and the US is not even the biggest of them
