junior Posted July 16, 2008 Share Posted July 16, 2008 If I remember correctly Joseph Mallozzi once said that he used to watch anime when he was younger and that he like all kinds of series ... also mentioning macross, so yeah it's possible he anmed them after the ships, but dont forget that Deadalus and Prometheus are quite normal names to be concidered for naming a ship (mythology stuff ... ya know) Yes and no... Naming ships after mythical figures is normal. Naming a matched pair of vessels after those two specific individuals isn't likely to happen by accident. Prometheus is the titan who created humans, and who gave them fire. Daedalus was a clever human inventor. He's perhaps best known as being the father of Icarus, who had a fatal accident with a pair of wings that Daedalus invented (because he ignored Daedalus's warning not to fly too close to the sun). So typically you're not likely to see those two names associated with each other, unless it's a Macross homage. Not anime, or even a TV show, but the PC video game Descent: Freespace had a Vasudan cruiser 'PVC Macross'. You were ordered to support it in a couple of missions, and if you successfully defended it then it helped you defend the Vasudan Destroyer 'PVD Hope' as you escorted the damaged Vasudan destroyer to safety during one of the multi-mission arcs. God, GTO was awsome, and Kanzaki was halarious. Also I'm surprised none of you mentioned the Minmay in a chinese dress statue,thrown about with all of Onizuka's stuff, later on in the manga, when Principal Daimon Misuzu throws Onizuka out , and all his stuff into the trash. There's Minmay, Sammi, Vanessa who previously part of Kei Katsuragi's long list of girlfriends. Of course, how Athena (the green haired Chiram ace) almost identically resembled Miriya, & there's lies somewhere a VF-1J crate for sell by the enterprising Emaan. Oh, obviously the Chiraam armed forces, whose mecha, & uniforms screams 'Zentraedi', albeit in micronised form. Didnt their supreme general is a baldie guy - kinda reminds of of Bodolza in SDFM. Then there's Kei Katsuragi. I've a gut feeling he IS Roy Fokker incarnate. Ohhhhhh yesss ..... there's even a too-brief scene where a naked Misa Hayase (finally, her BOOBIES to ogle with) actually popped out from a Chiraam comm monitor (damn that lucky Chiraam pilot!) Megas XLR was loaded with great references: - The very title pokes fun of SDF Macross title - Megas is found in the junkyard on its back like in Macross DYRL - Hikaru's VF is seen for a second in a pirate ship hanger in another episode - The Glorft main ship looks exactly like the SDF-1 Its not surprising looking back though as one of Megas XLR's co-writers, Ford Riley also co-wrote Robotech: SC There is also Gainax's popular Evangelion. In Episode 09 of Evangelion, Asuka's leaps on and demolishes the half-submerged building of Studio Fantasia in reference to Hikaru crashing into Studio Artland. Whats more the Zentradi/Human being children of the protoculture plot is mirrored in Evangelion. Not only do they share the same genetic codes, but they are confirmed to have been created by the "First Ancestral Race" in the Evangelion 2 video game. Its no surprise though as Hideaki Anno, the director of Evangelion actually started his career in anime as a key animator for SDF Macross. Also, in a Super Friend's episode of all places an obvious knockoff of the Macross's Bridge is seen. Unfortunately I cannot remember the youtube link. Unfortunately I cannot remember the youtube link. I remember that show and it was Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians episode titled "Ghost Ship". Some consider it the final season of Super Friends because many of the same staff did SF over the years but the show can possibly stand as it's own entity. I also remember an episode of Transformers where Skyfire (Jetfire) bent his legs in jet mode almost like a Gerwalk. Not entirely bent but when I saw it sure surprised me. Seto Kaiba Posted April 5, 2009 Share Posted April 5, 2009 I've been watching Mobile Suit Victory Gundam lately, and I can't shake the thought that the mega launcher used by Uso's LM312V04+SD-VB03A Victory-Dash Gundam looks and operates like a converging beam cannon... it even uses the same sound effect... the only difference is the beam is pink and not blue. The cannons on the overhang packs also do the same sound effect, and the hits are always animated like that one shot in the original series where the Macross's main gun cored that Zentradi cruiser like an apple. The original JetFire toy was actually the Macross Skull Leader figure that was renamed and repainted for the transformers G1 Toyline. Back in the 80s Robotech fans recognized JetFire's roots and bought JetFire because he transformed better then the Robotech Veritech toys. http://www.toybin.org/cache/1985/Autobots/...e/480_robot.jpg On a similar note BattleTech, now Mechwarrior, used Macross designs after buying the rights from Big West. Unfortunately they were sued by Harmony Gold and settled to discontinue use of all Macross mech designs. Since then those designs have become know as the "Lost Mechs" in the Battle Tech continuity. http://www.schwag.org/~rocky/btech/Retro/Lost/index.html As for Project-Ako, I have yet to see it but I have heard is stock full of references from not just anime like Macross, Gundam, etc, but DC Comics as well. Have not seen Mobile Suit Victory Gundam either. Though to be honest just because the it "looks and operates like a converging beam cannon" doesn't mean its a solid reference to the Macross beam cannon. As for the sound effects, Sci-Fi shows use stock Sound effects from older shows all the time to save money. I thinks its likely the Mega launcher was made similar to the Macross Cannon because that it was fans and audiences were most likely familiar with. So, I have say Seto, that your Victory Gundam reference is more plausible then I initially thought. On that note I do remember now that Gundam Seed not only had the Singing Idol Lacus Clyne, but had the alien whale fossils as a possible joke to the Singing Space Whales in a Macross 7 OVA. Mr March Posted April 8, 2009 Share Posted April 8, 2009 Zeta Gundam was undeniably influenced by Macross and embraced the transforming trend that SDF Macross made popular in the 1980s, but I wouldn't say Zeta Gundam ripped off Macross. After all, I wouldn't call Macross a rip off of Gundam, though it's clear SDF Macross was strongly influenced by Mobile Suit Gundam. I think any time a show is inspired by a particular trend, but takes that trned and goes it's own way with it creatively, it's only an influence. SDF Macross certainly took it's own creative direction with a robot war story and developed a clearly distinct mechanical design. Mr March Posted May 8, 2009 Share Posted May 8, 2009 (edited) Honestly, I'm not seeing much. Perhaps vague coincidental similarities, at best. I wouldn't call it strong influence or homage. The only strong link I've noticed between the franchises has been the Banshees from Halo and the Battle Pod (Commander Type) from Macross II. I discussed this once with Seto. Not only do the two share many similar hull shapes (especially the whole dorsal fuselage), but they also share similar color schemes and the method of pilot entrance/egress is nearly identical.
