Counter strike

Forgive me of my ignorance, if any, but whats so great about counter-stike? My experience has been too fast gameplay, chuggy sprite movement, and poor graphics, yet there are millions of servers! Maybe this is a cheap game for a cheap computer, so it fits alot of people; i dunno. For those enthusiasts out there, please explain what I'm missing. My friend says its addictive, but I just can't get into given the above details. BTW, im talking about counter stike, not the mods. Specifically, what makes it so great as opposed to the other online fps's. Your responces much appreciated.

tons of idiot kids play it and cheating is pretty much a given.

Nothing, anymore. When it first came out it was really cool, a fairly fresh concept. Shortly thereafter the whole thing went nose-down... increased immaturity of players, the realisation that its really not very realistic at all even though it is often made out to be realistic, too much publicity, etc.

A lot of us are still trying to figure out why so many people still play cs. I guess they are just that oblivious to everything else, or are so immature that they can't tolerate any other gaming community.

I had a hell of a good time with Counterstrike back when it first started after Half Life came out. Like most online games though, it quickly became overrun with a bunch of pricks, not to mention gangs of people that play so well it's not even fun to be on the same team as them. It was actually Counterstrike that made me lose interest in 1st person shooters entirely.

I played it until version 1.3 came out. <_< I'll have to say it was a game that was almost free, that all of my friends could play without being limited by how powerful our computers were and still had good speed. I lots interest when cheating became prominent. When I was called a cheater and pricks and megalag was always happening.

Well....I haven't played CS on my computer in several months (still haven't downloaded v1.6 STEAM).

But I did get a chance to play it last weekend at my friends place. It's just as fun as before, and for a free game it's pretty damned fun. Just make sure you have a fast connection or you'll get AWP'd. :p

I played till 1.4, although the rest of my clan quit after 1.3... I remember clan battles, heck, I still have email contacts of a lot of the old CS clans...

I think two things... well, three really, but two are related... killed CS:

1) Cheating, and the subsequent "fixes". I'm sure all old school CS players remember what happened with the new lag correction they implemented. Being shot around the corner by some newbie on a 56k was no fun.

2) Nerfing of weapons. Anybody remember when the AWP was really one-shot-one-kill? Then the newbies started complaining, and they toned it down... then they started toning everything down, to the point where emptying entire clips did nothing.

For anybody still interested in teamwork and realism, America's Army is the way to go. Although it's slowly being invaded by newbies too, the way the game is structured makes it very frustrating for bunny hoppers and bullet spammers... not to mention the initial accuracy exam to pass. Get some experienced players together, and you get impressive and realistic results when everybody uses handsigns to communicate. The game really made my day on one mission, four soldiers storming an occupied room. Squad leader sneaks up to building, "all halt" signal, peak around corner, then "two" "left" "one" "right", flash, nade, then "all go" signal. SMOOTH.... gotta be there to really get the feeling.

EDIT: Oh, yeah... AA is TOTALLY free, unlike CS which is just a mod :D

Another reason why I stopped playing that stupid AWP, gimme the USP anyday.

heh, USP? hells, I had the most fun using the Scout.. now THAT was fun and challenging. Nothing more humiliating for a CS player than being headshot by a Scout... well... maybe being TMP'd...

Ah, Counterstrike... that stuff is pure video crack. I haven't played in over a year, but I still think Counterstrike best incorporates several elements that make people want to play games. Game developers would do well to incorporate these into all their designs.

Cooperative play: It's always better when you can work on a team and have people backing you up, then simply "shoot everyone deathmatch". It creates a (yes, false) sense of belonging and camaraderie.

Sociality: People tend to pick one server and play on it consistently, so you see and get familiar with a particular group of players. In the couple of minutes between when you're unlucky enough to get killed and when the next round starts, there's a lot of chatting going on.

Short rounds, rapid rewards: Rounds in CS are short, no longer than five minutes, and usually much shorter. If you are winning, you win quickly. If you lose, you don't have to suffer much. You feel that don't have a whole lot of time invested in the game either way, so winning or losing one round isn't a big deal. No matter what happens in this round, there's always another round coming right up. But of course you don't realize that you are actually blowing a huge amount of time on the game, because you keep telling yourself, "okay, I'll play just ONE MORE ROUND..."

Multiple rewards: You can play the game several ways, depending on your style. Want to plant a bomb? Do it and get some money. Want to defuse the bomb? Do it. Want to win by wiping out the other team? That's your thing, man, wipe away. Even if your team loses the round, you can still personally score big points by getting some kills. It makes players feel that they are contributing in their own way.

Think about some of the games, especially online games, that you spend lots of time on. Chances are, they'll include the above elements in one form or another. Battlefield 1942 has done a really good job of incorporating these elements as well, which is why it's now so popular, but Counterstrike so far has done it best.

You nailed it!! That's exactly what CS is about. Plus the "realistic" weapons. I still play CS now with STEAM 1.6 and it's still fun. I think that people who stopped playing it was because they played it so much taht they got sick of it.

Also CS has so many servers that if you don't like awps... then just get on a server that doesn't allow awps... if you like FF on then just get on a serer ff on. If you hate the shields... then just go to a server that doesn't allow them. Everyone is happy.

I agree that army ops is a much superior game but the rounds are really long and it's too serious for some people.

And i really hate it when people complain about newbies... COME ON!! we were all newbies at some point!! If there's something to complain about is the people who are so good that it's boring to play with them because you get killed everytime by them if you are in the same team and or you don't get to kill anyone if you are in the same team.

Just my opinion.

~Tico, still a supporter of CS, greatest online game ever.

One of my friends hasn't stopped playing CS since it was released. THe guy always cuts me oof on ICQ because he HAS to play CS. Personally, I never thought Half-Life's multiplayer was that great. Quake II, Unreal Tournament, Halo, Jedi Outcast, and a few others had much more interesting online play. However, Half-Life single player was second to no one (very ironic, since most people don't seem to care for the innovative SP...oh well, Half-Life 2 will show them why it rocks..again).

I think the thing about CS (as far as I can tell) is the huge mod community. Half-Life has one of the - if not THE - biggest mod communities for a FPS. Lots of different stuff to try, new classes, new guns, new maps, new complete games, etc. But again - for me personally - mods are what killed the online gaming for me with most of the FPS. Too many cheats become available over time, too many bored kids with nothing better to do than play a game they are bored with like asses and team kill/server crash/spam games, too many keyboard scripts used by morons linking the deadliest of combos and cheaps, and quite simply...virtually nothing of the original game remains.

Sounds good if you want to spend you life at it. For anyone else who already has a life, late life online gaming always sucks :)

*pulls up old man rocking chair*

I was there for the early days of CS, before it had earned the monicker "Counter-Hack." In those days people actually played the game for the mission objectives, not just for the frags. Then with each progressive Beta, the various guns would be either completely nerfed or raised to the level of Doom's BFG-9000. Then the kiddies showed up. And the hackers. Consequently, I switched to DoD and haven't looked back since.

Today, there's a bunch of guys that frequent the same Cyber Cafe as me that still play CS. All they ever do is play the frag levels like "Iceworld" and just blow the f*ck out of each other. No hostage rescues, no bomb defusals. Why not jsut play Half Life, or Team Fortress? <_<

Counterstrike too fast? Good god :(

I would hate to know what you would think of the Quake era when things weren't slowed down to a crawl like many games are now.

CS's strength put simply is that it is/was a hell of a lot of fun. It's just aging now, and through it's life it's been changed many times, a lot of people still like it but plenty of people have quit. (I gave it up myself when it became CS 1.0)

I mainly play LAN games at work. The internet is overrated.

I only like playing multiplayer when the people I am playing against are in the same room (or down the hall) and you can yell at each other, throw pencils, gang up and make bets. Some of us are just not that good at video games, we play them with friends to have fun... not see how many people we can kill or how much money/experience/loot/reputation we can make playing the game.

To me, counter strike is old hat. We played the hell out of it a long time ago.

Better things have come along now and we are playing them. Heck, we are having such fun with TRON 2.0 right now we may not notice any other games show up! You can keep your terrorist hijinks, Lightcycles rock! :p

Tonks, your statement is a real winner... I hope you live somewhere where EVERYONE thinks that attitude is cool. If not, it sucks to be you.

I played CS for all of 6 months before I got sick and tired of noob little kids in frag fests. All they were interested in was the quick kill and getting the match over with... NO FUN WHATSOEVER. I upgrated to UT which was MEANT for fragfests (and the cheats are near non-exsistant by comparison) needless to say, I was much happier. Campers were also better recieved there (I'm proud to be master of the sniper rifle, and anyone who complains because I "camp" sucks because they didn't think of it first and can't get to me. STOP SUCKING, BECOME BETTER, THEN WE'LL TALK)

Nowadays I only play online with people I know. We used to have an online clan that specialized in playing "smear the queer" with noobs who thought they knew it all (people don't like that kind of attention at all for very long, they find somewhere else to play) now that I do limited online gaming, I'm much happier. Next time I have to lay the smack down on some 13yr. old that thinks he's "Ahnold's" next descendant I'll probably quit for good.

While we're on the subject of FPS games, did anyone else think that while UT2003 was good, it didn't quite measure up to the original UT in terms of playability and execution? Just curious.

this was the world i was unfortunatley introduced at such late time. I know CS as an extensive history, but it is to overwelming for me to get started; i'll just stick with my wolfestein and porn

Hey JsARCLIGHT...where's your company located at, and how does one go about getting an application? :D

Saint Louis, MO. I'm one of the heads of a gung ho marketing and design firm.

We work hard, we play hard... it not only keeps morale up but makes for a more lighthearted atmosphere to get things done in. Every time I mention the shenanigans we do at work people get the impression all we do is goof off... to a degree they are right. My job is like college: ten hours of back breaking work then a couple hours of party followed by another ten hours of back breaking work.

We just moved our office so we could expand a bit more and possibly next year I'll be looking for another person to join my personal hand-picked design team. Requirements are: you must be a design professional with at least 5 years professional work experience, you must have one kick ass pro portfolio and you must have the mentality and work ethic that fits our team (no cowboys or ego trippers allowed). I pick the people so if you fit, give me a ring.
