I've just read through this thread and it would seem that I should check out the Appleseed manga. I have only seen the OVA and that was about 11 years ago. I remember that I really didn't dig it. But then, maybe it's like the book to movie thing - books are always soooo much better than the movie. I have been a fan of Shirow's since I first saw Dominion Tank Police. It's still a definite favorite for me. I saw that about the same time that I saw Appleseed. I have all the Intron books to date and it's interesting to watch how Shirow's work has evolved. His hand drawn work is gorgeous but I do like the fact that he's incorporated the CG. It was cool particularly to read about how he was able to achieve some of the backgrounds and the textures that appear in ID2. Who knew that a photocopier could be so useful? I saw GITS on the big screen and subsequently got the video for it. It is a bit plodding in parts, but overall still cool. The only manga that I have read of his thus far is the GITS book, and I have been reading through MMI as it is published. Again, I know some of you don't prefer the CG that appears, but I dig it. I think it really brings the virtual world to life so much more. I admit, the story has been a little hard to follow. I think that once all the issues are published, I am going to read through them all at once. As far as fan service goes, I don't really mind so much. I can see where it would be too much. I probably will get the Eros Depot book should it ever be published............... I would love to see the next ID book be a little more mecha heavy. I don't know anything about a new Dominion anime, but if there is one I hope it's at least funny. Heck, I haven't even read Dominion: Conflict 1 yet. I was shown a design book of his.... it had mostly half naked girls, with overly augmented body parts and tons of cybernetic stuff that seem to be there just to maintain the scifi tone. I think more than likely he's just doing what he likes; drawing pretty girls. Doing pin ups and short sequences is a lot less work than a big manga series, so I'm sure in that way he really appreciates it. Probably at the point in his life where he can pick and chose his work at this point anyways, I'm sure he made quite a bit of money between Appleseed, Dominion Tank Police and Ghost in the Shell. nghia59 Posted October 1, 2003 Share Posted October 1, 2003 I like Shirow's work regardless of the content I think that it has a life on its own. His technique makes whatever he does very unique. I think that he's just having fun with all the new stuff and that he'll eventually come around to what he started out doing. As a side note though... I watched the new Applseed movie (or at least a part of it) at the San Diego ComicCon this year and it looks stunning. It's still in the early stages of development but it looks to be be a fairly high budget and faithful to the book with a few liberties. For me, buying a Shirow work always meant that you knew you were getting something a little different, a little more out there, and that you would defiitely have to do some thinking to understand the story. When I see stuff like that, I can't help but feel like we'll never see anything like Appleseed again. Don't expect to see anymore Appleseed except for a picture or two. I recall reading Shirow complaining he can no longer draw Deunan(sp) where the readers can recognize her without a label saying that's her. Plus he mentioned the ending for Book 4 made it difficult to continue the storyline without doing an alternative storyline like he've with Dominion. Imho you're missing out, Black Magic M-66 is one of the best anime renditions of Shirow's mangas. Downside is Manga Entertainment have the rights to it. One thing that I've always appreciated about Shirow is the amount of technical detail that goes into his designs, even if it's just a prop used in one or two panels. If the characters themselves don't explain it to the reader, there's always copious footnotes that will. By his own admission he might not always draw stuff that's feasible, but he still puts more effort into it that 99% of the other artists out there.
