The MNU mercs in the movie had some pretty nice kit on them. Anyone know what the name of the white rifle MNU used? It looked like the Vektor or XM-8. Of course, the alien guns and the mech were just plain awesome as well.

10/5! Best movie I've seen in a long time. Oh, and the R-rating is well deserved, lots of "railgun" action.

Well I'm not surprised at all, since the valkyrie in question is piloted by none other than Guld "Teh Rapist" Bowman.... must have run out of meds again. -

Machete starring Danny Trejo, Deniro, Seagal, Alba, etc!

I think Seagal lost the fight against his own career a long time ago. -
Damm I can't stop watching this lol. I think we should send Black Dynamite to the so called "town hall meetings" in the US. > "B!TCH, Shut YO TRAP STOP YELLING AND WAIT FOR UR TURN... U DIG?" Oh wait, did I just try and talk about politics in a thread that is only marginally about Anime/Sci-fi?

Interesting Video game tidbits.

Good point.... I wouldn't go as far as calling it a "game" either, it was more like a drug addiction for the 2 years that I played it . Though it had almost every aspect of classic FF - the airships, all the classic avatars (the summons), job classes, Gilgamesh and Odin. -

Know for a fact the duo is absent from FFXI. -

Final Fantasy in general is sort of infamous for injecting names and stuff from other media: - Wedge in the first chunk of FF7 is from a certain film called Star Wars. - All the High Notorious Monsters in the FFXI MMO are based on actual literary creatures (Fafnir, Aspixxxxxx (I can't spell it sorry), Genbu, Suzaku, Kirin, etc). The summoned creatures as well, like Leviathan is obviously from the Biblical Leviathan. Also a Tengu appears in one of the expansions. No, he does not squirt acidic milk. - Also some weapons in FFXI are based on real life stuff. The multi-hit great katana Soboro Sukehiro (oh man, it took me forever to get that) was an actual swordsmith, and the Gae Bolg is from the Irish epic Fate Stay Night I mean Cuculain. And yea, excalibur dur... - Both Odin (from Norse mythology) and Gilgamesh (the old Sumerian tale) make multiple appearances in various games -Tidus from FFX is based on drag-Dennis Rodman, hypothesized. ... I could go on and on -
The Unseen... Legal again? (Classic Battletech)
Ghost Train replied to TehPW's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
This sounds really interesting.... but don't feel like reading the whole backstory (which is undoubtedly complicated), is this about the usage of Macross-like designs in Battletech ? -
Holy frack that's a lot of remotes....

I really liked last night's eps, they FINALLY managed to prop-foul one of the harpoon ships. After feeling pretty good about themselves, the JP whaling fleet strikes back by pwning a whale right in front of them lol. I think the gloves come off next week and things get nasty. On a side note, Watson strikes me as less and less like-able. When his chopper pilot (the only intelligent guy in the whole outfit) tells him to be careful when shooting flares into the air (as it might hit the chopper) his response was, "I don't know what he's talking about." Now, it would be awesome if there was some sort of proxy war escalation and both sides hired PMC's (or Somali pirates) to defend themselves, though I doubt that will ever happen, and Animal Planet would probably stop filming at that point.

I have not partied hard for 2 Fridays, just so I could catch my new favorite show. Now, I will keep this post as a-political as possible since whaling is a contentious subject in some areas of the world, but this show is just freaking epic. The best parts always revolve around the "Captain" coming up with a plan to harass the whalers, but his soldiers absolutely botching the execution of relatively simple commands. Things recently got nasty when the whaling fleet installed LRAD's on their ships and started using it against the Sea Shepherds. I was quite shocked that the first target they picked to test their new weapon was on the helicopter (I mean you really don't want to disorient a chopper pilot). Both sides have become super aggressive now. I can't wait till both parties get their hidden cache of Kalashnikov's (which you know they have) and really start treating this like serious business. If you want something new to watch, this is it. In the US it airs on Animal Planet.

Books that were better than the movie.
Ghost Train replied to Wanzerfan's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I believe that the timeframe in which the sum of all fears took place in the novel (which was circa early 1990's) and the movie (more contemporary) were different, and therefore they took some other creative liberties with the film. Never been a huge fan of Tom Clancy, he has his "military stuff" researched well in my opinion, but everything else is just very very flawed like going to war over an accident caused by a defective Japanese car in Debt of Honor... lol. Don't get me started on Bear and Dragon. -

Ghost Train replied to Duke Togo's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
FSN movie on the horizon! http://zepy.momotato.com/2009/08/05/fate-m...lade-works-but/ I thought that since the anime was mostly "fate" route, the manga supposedly ubw, that the flick was going to be Sakura route. Apparently though, it will be Unlimited gar Blade Works, hopefully with the nice harem ending . -
I wouldn't characterize climate change/global warming as hearsay. The greenhouse gas effect is real because it can be based on actual IR absorption of the greenhouse gases themselves, which has been demonstrated empirically a long time ago and is the core of any respectable chemistry curriculum. I do agree that there is much under-information in the area. People link the phenomena the Carbon Dioxide alone, but neglect to mention other greenhouse gases such as Methane, and gasp* Water vapor. Detractors of climate change have argued that since the concentration of water vapor far outweighs that of the other gases, then our human CO2 contribution can't possibly dent and upset the climate balance of the world. My personal view is that although there is some debate on the exact effect of CO2 emissions, and how much it takes for things to "go bad," there is no doubt in my mind that pumping too much of it into the atmosphere produces ill effects (at least without sufficient plant biomass to gobble it up - and that's not happening anytime soon either). Regarding the market value of China's brands, you have to remember that it has only been doing this market economy thing since the 1980's, and didn't start seeing the fruits of its labor until the late 1990's. The problem is that China is not really a free-market economy in the traditional sense. Contrasting China with India which despite its problems is indeed more market driven. The Chinese government can simply say, "I want a new highway here by next year," or "build a new international airport" there, and generally it gets done, whereas in the case of more market driven economies it is not so simple. The end-result is that its neighbor has developed recognizable private brands like Tata, Wipro, Infosys, etc (I'm in IT, so I'm biased). China seems to be content for the moment in the acquisition rather than the development of brands - like the purchases of IBM Desktops by Lenovo, or the recent acquisition of Hummer from GM. Although I think having a carrier group (or a blue water navy in general) is a vast technological and logistical achievement, we live in an era where the influence of hard-power is slowly declining. If I had to rank a civilization or state as advanced I would hardly look for a Blue Water Navy check box, as only two countries in the world (The US and the UK) can truly say they posses that. As far as the human development index goes, which measures life expectancy, education, and GDP per capita, none of the top 10 have a super-navy to speak off. The US sadly is ranked # 15.
