Bubblegum Crisis OVA Blu-ray Direct Release
F-ZeroOne replied to JetJockey's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Thanks for the heads up! I think this will now be the fourth time I've bought "Bubblegum Crisis". One day I will learn to stop buying "Bubblegum Crisis"... 😅 -
Glad you've had some success finding what you're after; I'm not a collector myself but I love reading about it (having grown up with videogames from the early 8-bit era) and did have a Dreamcast myself; "Skies of Arcadia" remains one of my all-time favourite games. I also used to have "Samba de Amigo" for it complete with the maracas, if I still had it I could probably launch my own spaceflight company now if I sold it at current prices... 😅

Heh, I was just reading an article in "Retro Gamer" magazine, a regular feature where they interview game collectors, and the Dreamcast collector they were talking to said that Japanese DC games were usually cheaper. I also remember years back reading an online article where someone mentioned games hunting in Japan and seeing "stacks" of what were considered rarities in the West at the time like "Radiant Silvergun". There have been several "Panzer Dragoon" games, the impression I get is that everyone everyone wants the RPG "Panzer Dragoon Saga" but I'm not sure how sought after the others in the series are.

His ghost will never forgive me, but whatever else you say about the 1984 film his take on it has more or less informed the "look" of "Dune" ever since.
-
Hikuro, possibly you're thinking of "Panzer Dragoon"?

I honestly don't know enough about LaserDisc to offer technical advice, but my guess would be as Pioneer were still making them just as DVDs appeared, their players might be the most "modern" and have more of the bells and whistles. I think the thing that gets me most about new tech is I still expect to have some kind of control panel or giant shuttle-wheel thing on the front, rather than everything being controlled by an app or something... 😄 Before this gets too far off the thread topic...!:

I used to have a Pioneer combo DVD/LD player, back when it was a little uncertain if these new-fangled DVD things would be a success. I loved that machine, though I no longer have it. I did manage to get a couple AnimEigo LDs and LD sets which I still have (the second part of "Kimagure Orange Road", "Rupan III" - yes, "Rupan"! - "The Fuma Conspiracy" and a couple "Urusei Yatsura" movies just because LD packaging was so nice. During my early trips to Japan in the early 2000s there were still lots of LDs around, presumably being sold at bargain prices (this was in the time when everyone was transitioning to DVD but before things like Google Translate were commonplace). If I had the wall-space I've wondered about getting the LDs framed more than once.

I also only recently found out about CED; I think there was at least one other LaserDisc rival as well but I forget the name now...

Wow, cool! I guess you should just be glad they didn't ask you to the horsebox as well... 😄 -

You know you’ve perhaps a bit too far down the aviation fan route when you can recognise an aircraft from a bit of colour on its nose…! 😅 -

Wait, top right hand-corner - is that either the X-29 or James Bonds little jet from "Octopussy"...?! -

Thanks for the great pic, like the TSR-2 itself, the YF-23 still looks like its from an alternate timeline... I've never made it to Cosford, though I have been to Duxford though not for some years. I keep meaning to make a return trip but its sort of the wrong side of London to make it straightforward getting there from where I am. -

Well, I hope they didn’t use the girls as firing range practice afterwards! -

Slight follow-up to my TSR-2 photo. Please tell me theres an anime girl version of this out there somewhere... 😅 Wait, was that a Hudson about two minutes in?! -
Small bit of related "Who" news, Tom Baker was awarded a MBE in the New Years Honours list. For those unaware of this very British way of rewarding public service (...mostly... 😅), it is a very straightforward and simple to explain system, similar to the Rules of Cricket or the "Offside" rule in footbal... I mean, soccer... 😉: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_British_Empire

What could be more suitable for Christmas TV than, essentially, a compilation of "Moffats Greatest Hits"... Channel 5, 8pm, Christma... [1] oh, wait... 😃 Having said that, I really enjoyed it, though possibly because a couple of the plot points had a personal element for me. Gatwa continues to impress me with the way he can go from fun loving party guy to absolutely ruthless when required. Was that a nod to the infamous "The Feast of Steven" right at the end there? I haven't had time to watch more than a couple minutes of the colourised "The War Games" but as iPlayer has both the original and the new version I was able to compare the openings, and blimey from what I've seen the colourisation work is incredible, you can barely tell (again, based on a couple of minutes) that it wasn't broadcast in colour to start with. In the UK the Christmas Special was followed up by the new "Wallace and Gromit" adventure, which made for a near perfect couple of hours of Christmas "telly". If you have the required streaming services, I'd recommend lining them up together. [1] UK TV Channel that, although gradually shaking off some of its lowest-common-denominator reputation, still has a tendency (and especially at this time of year) to fill its schedules with programmes with titles like "Britains Favourite Potatoes" and the like.

Gundam Show Thread - MSG thru GQuuuuuuX
F-ZeroOne replied to Black Valkyrie's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Seeing the thing stood still, rather than in some kind of flying action pose... it is kind of growing on me. I do agree that it shares the issue of being overly visually complicated, though the feet are kind of working for me - but then I like dinosaurs. 😅I'll give it a chance, because I remember the reaction to the "Turn-A" designs [1] when they first came out, and I was among one of those who laughed the loudest. Now, I have several of them sitting on my shelves... [1] Such as the Mobile FLAT, which made sense once you saw it in context.- 4016 replies

First impressions are pretty good. I find the "Star Wars suburbia" a bit odd, though there are hints not everything is as it seems there, and some of the pacing seems a bit off but thats an issue I seem to have with a lot of modern content. The lighting is superb and they do pretty much nail the homages in that regard they're going for. Its clearly aimed at a younger audience but I would have loved this when I was the intended age range and theres plenty for an Oldling like myself to enjoy.
