With today's technology, its possible to build a ship that will take something like 40 years to get to the nearest star. Of course, if you want to stop, then its 70 years, or thereabouts. Note: today's technology doesn't mean tried, tested and proven rocket technology. It's with other current technologies that can be turned into engine technologies. So, those above numbers aren't including things like turning that tech into engines, nor building the spaceship, nor motivating the politicians to pry open their wallets to sponsor such an endeavour (or at least that's what I remember from the Discovery Show (or was it National Geographic?) that talked about just that).

Terminator 5/Terminator: Genisys, opening July 1, 2015
sketchley replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
BBC news is reporting that T5 will be the first in a "standalone 'rebooted' trilogy". I don't know what's more alarming - that it'll be a trilogy, or that it's a reboot! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-23095529 Anyhow, some more eyebrow raising news from that article: Gah! Too many sequels!- 508 replies

They were in the first episode. Then they disappeared until the end of the series. Maybe the production crew felt it was too much effort to animate them in the middle stretch of the series?

Great Mechanics.DX 25 Macross content roundup: Macross Plus - an interview with the creator of, and on the CG effects. The most interesting is the smattering of images of the original cells side by side with the CG processed image that appears in the series. Eg 1: the B&W skeletal X-ray like view the YF-21 takes of the ground technician is, in cel form, yellow, orange, and red! Eg 2: the cell of Sharon's chip in episode 2 is only the orange and red hued stuff. All the blue and purple hued detail are CG. Another highlight is the crystal clear (= legible) text on such things as Isamu's 'Parsonal' Data Bank, the SDF-1 bridge breakdown, and so on (as those with the BDs have indicated elsewhere). It also goes into the technical details of making the CG. In short, rather complicated. Eg 1: fractals (for the mountain and sky in Eps 1) created on an Amiga, and exported to a Macintosh on an X68000 Cross Cable, and further able to be transferred to a Windows on a floppy (!). Eg 1: Photoshop: used to make the filter effects for the "eye" of Sharon's CPU, but another part mentions that M+ was made before Photoshop introduced the layers function - expressly making the point that the YF-19 Vs YF-21 Comparative Data Chart that pops up numerous times throughout the series was particularly difficult (the article draws attention to Eps 3, where the data points are shown changing). Lastly, it highlights some of the more subtle differences between the OVA and movie versions: Eg 1: the scene where Guld meshes with the YF-21: in Eps. 1 the YF-21 is in fighter form. In the movie, its in battroid form. Eg 2: Sharon's death/fading out: in Eps. 4, the diamond filter effect has a blue/green hue. In the movie version, it has a yellow/orange hue.

ER/RM++ Project: Technology 01E: Variable Fighter: http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRtechnology/MCRtechnology.php - a smattering of stuff of note. Probably most interesting is the name for the Vajra's anti-missile defence.

ER/RM ++ Project: Mechanic sheets!: http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php Mechanic: M UN 05A: VF-1D Valkyrie - most interesting is a list of the systems in the cockpit section. I'm guessing the hypo-metabolic system works to sustain a pilot over long duration flights... Mechanic: TF Citizen 01A: Macross Quarter - aside from some strangeness in the dates and an inconsistency in the sorting sub-group, an enjoyable page. And we get Eden mentioned again - this time, it's clearly identified as having multiple Factory Satellites in orbit, too!

I don't think it's the build team per se. There are a few Star Wars references sprinkled throughout Macross. Anyhow, do you have The VFMF: VF-1 book? Check out the cockpit panel display on Pg 043. Specifically right next to the "Helvetica" switch (which I'm glad was NOT included in the cockpit mock-up).

ER/RM++ Project: Timeline 18A: The Interstellar Wedding: http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRtimeline/MCRtimeline.php - now with newly translated header block (and smacked into php). Only changes between the two versions is that Max and Miria's wedding picture is colourized. Character Ai UN 02A: Hayase Misa: http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRcharacter/MCRcharacter.php#DYRL - highlights of the subtle changes between the TV and movie versions in her character.

ER/RM++ Project: Episode: 714A: Macross 7 Eps. 14 "Fighting Woman Mayor Miria": http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRepisode/MCRepisode.php#M7 - another pair of sheets that highlight the genius of the ideas behind M7. However, this one also highlights why M7 didn't capture that lightning in a bottle when translated onto the small screen - there's a fundamental lack of respect for the characters and situation. Take the character of Dr. Chiba - as the sheet describes him, he's a key man for the story, and his concept of sound energy is vital for the rest of the series. How such a vital story element is introduced highlights the flaw of the series. Compare it to Back To the Future - Doc Brown IS a mad scientist. However, despite the humour of his idiosyncrasies, his approach to science is always portrayed respectfully. I'm sure the people behind M7 wanted to create a character that the audience could relate to with Dr. Chiba, especially when he introduces sound energy to Gamlin, but such an approach falls on its face, and ultimately, highlights how the producers opted for a cartoony interpretation of M7... which harms the series, as it works at cross purposes to what it was fundamentally designed for.

ER/RM++ Project: Episode: M10A: Super Dimensional Fortress Macross Eps. 10 "Blind Game": http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRepisode/MCRepisode.php#SDFM - quite informative - not so much in the sense of in-series data, but on the production and directorial side; why things were done the way they were. Also, wasn't this the episode that almost killed SDFM during its original broadcast? Funny that there's no mention of that...

ER/RM++ Project: History: TF 01A: The First Vajra Engagement: http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRhistory/MCRhistory.php#TMF - highlights some more of the (subtle?) changes between the TV series and movie versions. This time, it's the origin of S.M.S.. Glossary 06A: MDE Shells - Ozuma Lee: http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRglossary/MCRglossary.php - This one is loaded with goodies - and it's interesting comparing the changes between the two versions - as despite the changes, each version is equally correct. Most interesting is the mention of guns on the Large Decent Pod. Shouldn't that have been mentioned on the mechanic sheet?!?

ER/RM++ Project: Character sheets: http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRcharacter/MCRcharacter.php Character 7 UN 02A: Kinryu - wish there was a bit more on Pink Pecker Squadron... alas, they didn't develop the back-story beyond what was seen in the series. Character F ETC 01A: Grace O'Connor - contrasting the Kinryu sheet, this one develops not only the 117th Researchers, but also the leadership of the Macross Galaxy fleet. The icing on the cake is the clarification on some of the how's and why's of Ranka's and Sheryl's origins.

Bandai 1/72 fully transform able VF-1 plastic kit for Macross 30th Ann
sketchley replied to Vi-RS's topic in Model kits
If they're anything like those in the VF-25/27 kits from a few years back, then they literally are shafts (as in 2~3 cm long, 1~2 mm thick), and they're probably going to be limited to the places deemed to experience the most stress when transforming (as there will be 12 in this kit, hopefully things like the shoulder hinges, shoulders and hips will have them). -
ER/RM++ Project: Mechanic sheets: http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php Mechanic: M UN 02C: VF-1J Valkyrie - further highlighting of the VF-1's faults (say it ain't so!). Nevertheless, the autopilot - specifically how it's used - on the atmospheric escape booster is an eyeopener. Mechanic: Plus UN 02C: YF-21 - hmmm... didn't they describe it as turning off the limiter in the OVA? Anyhow, why does it have to automatically open when the hand is near it? Wouldn't that thing be opening every time the pilot touches the console? Also, how do you open it when the airframe loses main power? Or am I thinking about it too much?

I'm pretty sure there are areas that specialize in electronics, of those... Anyhow, as I was thoroughly embarrassed with the results of last nights 5 minute search, I put on my google-foo head band, and came up with these: Puramo specific: http://ms-plus.com/search.asp?id=22059 http://www.ms-plus.com/search.asp?id=11492 These look the most like what you're after. I haven't explored the site too deeply, but they may have plug-and-play (no or minimal electrical assembly required) stuff that is more what you're looking for. LED online retailers: http://www.my-craft.jp/html/category_chip1.html?gclid=CPeDs4OT8LcCFUNipQodsR0ABw http://akizukidenshi.com/catalog/c/cr5mm/ http://www.led-paradise.com/product-list/2 EDIT: Hmmm, shipping on that site to Hokkaido looks like it might be a deal breaker. Nevertheless, with that product info, I'm certain you can find similar stuff with cheaper shipping.

I think they were just like the viewer: they weren't aware that it was possible. The TV series didn't go into too much detail on the ARMD, but it isn't too much of a stretch to imagine that the ARMD have something similar to their DYRL counterparts. Anyhow... ER/RM++ Project: Episode sheets! (linky: http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRepisode/MCRepisode.php Episode: 7 00A: Macross 7: Production Data; Opening/Ending - nothing unexpected (it is a perfunctory sheet after all). Though, more clarification on where the M7 movie fits into things is welcome. Episode: Zero 03A: Macross Zero Chapter 3 "The Pale Struggle To The Death" - quite interesting - commentary on the directorial pacing as well as Nora's blink-and-you-miss-it skill. Lastly, we get not only a translation of the OJ CM, but also the name and source of the hero the Mayan Islanders were watching.

If memory serves, the modular nature of the SDF-1 was known right from the start. In short: if it wasn't modular, it wouldn't have survived its crash landing on South Ataria Island. An article made the distinct point that the most vital systems were in the central block, and although the outer blocks were damaged, the central one wasn't. The ARMDs would have fulfilled the same role as they do in DYRL: they are the air bases for the Valkyrie and Ghost fighter wings on the ship.

Couldn't you just go to the equivalent of Den-den Town or Akiba in your neck of the woods? When it comes to these kinds of electronic components, all you really need to do is show a piece of paper with the specs on it (Amps, Volts, Resistance, etc.). I'm almost tempted to tell you to send the components to me and make it for you... ... but yeah, just did a quick search on google for LEDs, and what comes up are oodles of the LED incandescent bulb replacements. Not much comes up for LEDs themselves, but I stumbled on this: http://www.rgb-led-light.com/ (Most of the quick searches at the major stores (Konan, Homes, etc.) led to the incadecent bulb replacement LED lights. I'm not sure if it was because I was using the wrong term to look up the bulbs, or that those major stores simply don't care them, as there isn't that much of a DYI/weekend carpenter tradition here).

ER/RM++ Project: Episode: M09A: Super Dimensional Fortress Macross Eps. 9 "Miss Macross": http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRepisode/MCRepisode.php#SDFM - another fascinating sheet. It also serves to highlight not only how many people participated in the making of SDFM, but also how many of them went on to become famous anime creators in their own right. On top of that, we get the contextual background of the origins of Warera, Rory, and Konda. A must read.
