Keep in mind that language acquisition starts inside the womb - hearing the mother's and father's voices. I'm not sure how it applies to Japanese (as words are generally non-stressed), but with English there is a clear distinction between content and function words. Tests have shown that newborns respond to content words much more than function words. Therefore, years in school only counts towards reading and writing, IMHO. Actual speaking begins around the end of 1 or middle of 2. Listening begins earlier. So, if you're 20, you're 20 years behind a native speaker AND at a disadvantage because you're not immersed in the language (if you're not in Japan, that is). (example content words: tree, run happy. example function words: a, of, or.)

Emigrant - someone who leaves one country to settle in another Immigrant - a person who comes to a country where they were not born in order to settle there Colonist - a person who takes over and settles land I agree that emigrant and immigrant is arguing semantics (and it's more related to the origin and destination countries than the process itself), but emigrant and immigrant are seperate and distinct actions from colonist. You may have a different definition, being from a different country, thus I have provided the one I'm using. Nevertheless, as this is stemming from Japanese: 移民 - emigrant/immigrant: http://linear.mv.com/cgi-bin/j-e/sjis/dose...%AF&WC=none 植民 - colonization/colonisation: http://linear.mv.com/cgi-bin/j-e/sjis/dose...%AF&WC=none The Japanese term for Super Long Range Emigration Fleet is: 超長距離移民船団. I said: "check your facts first, before posting your opinions and assumptions". Yeah, so? That has no bearing on the original point I was making. That being the facts A, B, C, and D here. The rest of the post after that was couched in language that clarified that I was stating my opinion, or did you miss that? Feel free to start your own thread discussing the use of "Macross" as a term for a specific kind of ship. Perhaps you can even start by asking if an emigration fleet is really the first to find a planet and do the actual colonisation, or if it follows after another, dedicated ship or fleet, that finds suitable planets and establishes a colony, which the emigrants of an emigration fleet later immigrate into.

Misleading information, if you ask me. Here's why: the minimum number of words needed to talk at a basic level: Japanese: 200 English: 400 In other words, it'll take half as long (or half as much effort) to get the same result.
-
It's not that hard, especially if you've learned Japanese. Heck, any Altaic language will help, but Japanese is probably the closest (pun intended.) Anyhow, yes, knowning Hangul impresses Koreans, AND Japanese. I've had more than my fair share of double-takes on both sides of the East Sea/Sea of Japan. Korean isn't that much harder to learn (if anything, it's less hard, because of the reduced amount of hanja (kanji) used. However, both are difficult for an English native speaker to learn, simply because they are agglutinative.
-
Long story short: learning Japanese is the same as learning any other foreign language. It takes effort. It takes practice. It takes time. And there's no one proven method that works for everybody. I encourage any student of the language (or any language, for that matter) to experiment with different ways of learning the language. With luck, you'll stumble on the one that works best for you. Most importantly, get yourself a target or goal. Without it, you'll probably aimlessly study, and wind up with a smattering of esoteric knowledge but won't be able to stitch together a basic sentence. With it, even when your motivation is low, you'll still have something that keeps you going.

Macross Frontier Mecha/Technology Thread IV *Read 1st Post*

... with plenty of OTEC advances incorporated. The good news is that they didn't include energy conversion armour... but wait, doesn't an energy conversion armour equipped VF have about the same armour as the standard Destroid? -
See http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?...st&p=676706 I'll further define the options: 1) learn Japanese, and do the translations yourself 2) pay a professional translator to do it 3) take it or leave it. Politely asking if something is a typo is accetable, insulting the translator is not.

So, you're saying the park along the top surface of the ship isn't an eco-system? (Not to mention that materials (water, air, etc.) are all recycled, thereby making it a closed eco-system, with or without flora and fauna). Nevertheless, having an environment (park, Sunny Flower, Riviera, Environment ship, etc.) isn't what makes a New Macross class Super Long Range Emigration Fleet. The Macross 5 fleet has no such vessels nor does City 5 have any parks. Also, get your terminology straight : 移民 translates as emigrant/immigrant, NOT as colonist/colony. ?? New Macross Class Super Long Range Emigration fleet means fleets like Macross 5, 7, and so on. Focusing on the concept of ships named Macross is missing the point. You've misread facts, or haven't read all the facts that have been translated. A plurality of Macross class ships (I take that as two, possibly more) where attached to each and every Megaroad Class Super Long Range Emigration fleet. Those fleets were never referred to as anything buy "Megaroad class Super Long Range Emigration Fleet".
-
Don't forget that ships like the 3-star Factory ship have a large residential section, and they don't have a dome. Again, just because it wasn't shown, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Take the Macross 5 fleet (the Zentraedi one) in M7: it's pictured as an extremely dense concrete jungle, akin to lower Manhattan island. There's no impression of parks in that ship. Why couldn't the Galaxy fleet be similar? (Corporate dude: screw parks! We need more high rises to get more people working!)

最新作「マクロスf」でもメカニカルアートを担当 If I'm not mistaken, translates as "also in-charge of the mechanical art of the latest production "Macross F". The rest of the text, which isn't on the original release (unless I've lost that... which would be extremely unusual), says stuff along the lines of "started from SDF:M, the world of Tenjin Hidetaka's aeroplane illustrations".
-
One must also keep in mind that: a) under the Seeding plan, the UN Spacy launched 1 to 2 Super Long Range Emigration Fleets per year (presumably from Earth) b) the Galaxy Fleet is launched from Eden c) (the aforementioned) Galaxy is a corporate fleet d) the Galaxy Fleet has been described as a "New Macross Class" Fleet. Point d needs some clarification: because it's been described as such, it most likely consists of the standard Super Long Range Emigration fleet ships, such as the Macross 7 or Macross 5 fleet. Because Kawamori-san has gone on record stating essentially that designs of old opponent ships were not reused in the newer series to prevent the viewer from becoming confused, despite them being present, I feel that the Macross Galaxy ship designs that we have seen are part of a larger fleet composed of the standard Super Long Range emigration fleet ships. Therefore, in addition to the Battle 21, (Battle Galaxy), there's also a City 21, in addition to the "mainland" that we've been shown. Perhaps the Mainland ship is a combat capable emigration ship, or simply contains the real bodies of Grace et al and they want that near the front lines during the series.

Macross Frontier Mecha/Technology Thread IV *Read 1st Post*

I see you haven't read "Great Mechanics.DX 7. Again, refer to "Great Mechanics.DX #7 (or wait until I get a round toit and type up the translation of it). FYI, it's refered to as an "approximately 200 m stretch". -
Right now, there's probably not enough to fill an entire book. We'll have to wait another year or two - perhaps when the lion's share of Macross Chronicle is completed. Of course, there's another angle to consider: how well did the original sell? I bought mine when it first came out, 4 years ago. If they're still selling new (as in previously unowned) copies, and there hasn't been a second print run, it means the prospect of a second book are slim. Compare this to Shoji Kawamori Macross Design Works, which basically sold out within the first half a year, or a year. (My sales barometer is first hand experience. I still come across the book titled in this thread on occasion. Not often, but it's still on the shelves. Shoji Kawamori Macross Design Works? Saw that all of once in 5.5+ years of living here (in Japan). I eventually had to order it from an online retailer, and I'm not entirely certain if I got a "used" or "new" copy. Bbut that's another story.) Pictures would be good. Post, and I'll see if I can whip out a translation.

Not to mention that other stats in the stats write-up above are in metric...
-
Doubtful that it'd be reprinted. It's most likely saying that it's related to Macross Frontier (has the VF-1, like as seen in MF). Just did a search (string: バルキリーズ:天神英貴マクロス画集 ) and all the images that popped up are unchanged. You're user stats says that you're in Singapore - was the additional cover stuff in Japanese, or Chinese?

@ Jenius: Oh, boo-hoo. Bri beat you to it, and his post was much more informative into the how's and why's. Nevertheless, I stand behind my "clear as mud" point.
-
You do realize that some government processes are as clear as mud, right? Tack on the additionals of doing it all in a foreign country and not speaking the same language. Sure, the trademark owner has some responsibilities, but does the onus of defending it in all instances that it's infringed upon fall solely on the trademark owner? It seems like common sense is missing. But wait, we're talking about a country that allows people to successfully litigate a company after they poured hot coffee on themselves, right?

Nothing. I came to Japan because of it. I've learned Japanese because of it, and am continuing to learn jargon/technical words because of it). I'm making a manga because of it. In other words, as a working, home owner, father of 2 living in a foreign country (Japan), the most likely thing is that I'm going to run out of time to properly enjoy it - which will make everything about it look more rosey and increase my interest in it.

About the Macross Chronicles
sketchley replied to Isamu test pilot's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
There's published text somewhere that specifically mentions that they are beam cannons. -
You are absolutely right, as there's a show nameed "Aim for the top! Gunbuster", and that show's sequel is "Aim for the top 2!". What's this "Gunbuster" that everyone's referring to? Storywise, I like how they don't give you any time or location specifics right away, and you find out about that and how it's all related to the original after the episode/series is completed.

About the Macross Chronicles

Where is it stated that gatling guns are less powerful than particle beam cannons? Ignoring the recharge/engine requirements, the gatling guns are a lot more versatile, and a lot more compact. Anyhow, let's wait for the sheet to come out, as the Destroid/Cheyenne II has BOTH gattling guns and (particle?) beam cannons on the arms. -
About the Macross Chronicles
sketchley replied to Isamu test pilot's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Who said anything about Destroids being antiques? I've glanced at the pages regarding those mecha, and the impression I am left with is that they are still being manufactured and used. I think it's simply just the producers/writers wanting to go for something new/visually different from what has gone before. For example, in MF, even though the Galaxy Fleet is a New Macross class fleet, yet we are never shown the city section. Why's that? To keep from confusing the viewers (are we looking at the good guys or the bad guys???) Just as Kawamori has stated that there are fleets using the VF-19 and that there are Zentraedi ships in the Frontier Fleet, it's equally likely that the Galaxy fleet is composed of Uraga, Northampton and Maizura class ships, in addition to the green and orange ones it's portrayed as. Therefore, it may be a case that the Cheyenne type destroid never stopped being used - or (and I'm leaning this way) that it was put on the back burner prior to SWI as the UN Spacy felt that the "classic" destroids needed to be prioritized, and only later were returned to frontline duty post SWI and reconstruction. -
Puh-lease... Even with additional criteria, it is still entirely opinion based. People will still post there personal justifications, but making things requirements will not only reduce the number of people willing to voice their opinion, but also it's impossible to create critera that fit every anime (are there mecha in Grave of the Fireflies? Totoro??? etc.) and anything that could possibly be in an anime (where's the bouncing bustline? Factual accuracy??? etc). Keep it simple, and you'll get the exact results that you're curious of.

About the Macross Chronicles

Well, I'll be. "Destroid" does indeed appear to be the "Cheyenne II". The YF-19 also appears to be the cover piece/foldout sheet. Re: iss 19 VF-11B: lineart for the bayonnet equipped 30 mm 6 barrel gunpod for the win! VF-17: is the "C" sheet for the M7 version: front are the Super Parts, reverse is the transformation Prometheus: what? No fighters/vehicles stats? On a B sheet? Nice that the deck weapons are clearly IDed. No gallery sheet, but a fold out SDF-1 goods sheet!?! Ozuma Lee: complete with pineapple cake! Zentraedi attack (attack the Zentraedi?) has a wicked awesome Daedalus punch illo for the win! The deer next to the Guraji (Glaug) on the nature reclamation tech sheet is awesome - even though it looks like it's floating in midair... ... and the postcards that everyone wins (who mails in) for the 11-19 mail-in look pretty sweet! -
Ghost in the Shell - (original, unedited/upgraded/whatever movie) for the thoughts it provokes tied with Porco Rosso - because it's everything that a good (anime) movie should be, and more.
