大隊 「だいたい」 http://linear.mv.com/cgi-bin/j-e/sjis/dose...%E0&WC=none Hmm... if Vermillion Team is a 小隊, then it must be Skull Team in MF. Which makes a bit more sense to me. Anyhow, going back to the original post on this: the insignia are different. Ergo, they are different.

LOL! Hey - isn't Pink Pecker the squad that Ozuma was part of? Yeah, yeah, I know. I'm just trying to create an internet myth.

Robotech and HG License Debates

Wouldn't it be cool if BW and WB work out a deal, and exclude HG? (Or give them a finder's fee, at best). -
Of course, this is a specific countries usage of a term that the original translates into. Going back to the Japanese, 小隊, it is composed of: 「small; little; tiny] and [party; company; body (of troops); corps]. Or, the smallest unit of troops. Of course, in SDF:M, it is further divided into 3-person teams. Macross F appears to support that, when it comes to NUNS. But S.M.S? I think "Skull Squad" is the most accurate of the terms presented - as long as squad is not assumed to be a shortened form of squadron!

Yes. The decision by the people behind Macross to use DYRL designs has nothing to do with anything other than creative reasons. They revisioned things in DYRL, and it's their choice to keep using the improved-upon images, or not. (See the mixed SDF:M and DYRL uniforms of the Zentraadi on Garia 4 for further confusion).

Could be... but given that the VF, in Battroid mode, was envisioned to act as infantry, using "platoon" does make sense. Anyhow, I did a bit more research on terminology: Squadron: http://linear.mv.com/cgi-bin/j-e/sjis/dose...ron&WC=none 戦隊,戰隊,遊軍; None of these have been used in Macross F related materials to describe "Skull Platoon". Fighter Squadron: (found here: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E9%A3%9B%E8%A1%8C%E9%9A%8A ) 戦闘機中隊 is the most similar, but as it's a 中隊*, it's an order of magnitude larger than 小隊. The same page mentions that the Aerial SDF uses 飛行隊 as "fighter squadron". But as with all things related to the SDF (that's Self Defense Force, not Super Dimensional Fortress), it's probably a vocabulary change to deemphasize the offensive military aspects due to Article 9. "An air force, army aviation or naval aviation squadron typically consists of three or four flights, with a total of 12 to 24 aircraft, depending on aircraft type and air force." from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squadron#Aviation further confuses things. Is the Wikipedia definition accurate? Anyhow, I have a gut feeling that Skull Squadron isn't the best translation of スクール小隊. Is there something in the US (or other) Airforce, that is smaller than a squadron, but larger than a wing-pair? *中隊: http://linear.mv.com/cgi-bin/j-e/sjis/dose...%E0&WC=none is described as a company, battery, troop.

Funny. I considered the novels the second best. After the better comics, of course. -
The MF translation into Skull Squadron *may* be in error. The Japanese for it is 小隊, which translates as "Platoon". http://linear.mv.com/cgi-bin/j-e/sjis/dose...%E0&WC=none Therefore, correctly translated it should be "Skull Platoon". I'm not sure what Japanese term is used to describe the SDF:M Skull Squadron. I can probably find it, but I'm too busy right now. If someone else could...?

Sweeet bejeezus, that's a sweet looking VA-3C Kai with aerospace boosters! Hopefully we will get some nice Tenjin Hidetaka paintings of some of the VFs that showed up in the games. Hopefully. Macross F blog: http://www.macrossf.com/blog/ I'm sure Sedou will be most impressed by the Mardooku pickle sheet. Especially as it looks like it'll be consistant with all of the other support ship sheets released to date: that's two ships per page. Re: the giveaway card - scanlation from #23 "Bandai will start selling the "Macross Crusade" card game from June, 2009. In a special collaboration, in issue 25 a Macross Crusade card will be included. Have fun." -

Extra odds and ends: - the Vehicles of Eden is a Civilian 02a sheet. What could 01 be? The Stellar Whale? - back cover: two new Macross CDs: Band Score Macross F Best Score, and Band Score Fire bomber best Score. The Fire Bomber one looks intruging (as I don't have any of their CDs), but the MF one??? Talk about trolling for money... the same frikken songs on 3 CDs now. (Not including singles) >.< I figured out a good way to organize the binders: 1: Mechanic, Technology, Worldguide 2: Character, Timeline, History 3: the rest -

What I would've liked is some embellishment on those "missing" 30 years. Anyhow, quickie review of MC #23 SV-51 - at first glance, Hidetaka Tenjin's painting looked like a CG model to me. Parts of it still do, under closer examination. Must be the texture that he's painted it with. It looks like there'll be at least a B sheet. We've only got DD's version. The girl? The super packs (yeah, yeah, I know they're not called that)? The tawny SV-51? Fingers crossed for a C sheet, too. VF-11 MAXL Kai Mireena Specialized Fighter - some hard stats on the sound booster. Yay! (Not a lot. Length, width and weight). Miria Warship AKA Meltrandi Gunboat - next to no new stats; neither weapons it's outfitted with nor Queadlunn-Rau it carries. Disappointed. Vehicles of Eden - aside from the main characters' vehicles, there's also lineart for the hospital bike and the limo. The city bus and vehicular traffic gets only passing mention in a pair of small paragraphs. I was hoping for a bit more on those. Ah well. Mireena Furea Jiinasu - G sheet! I don't think we're finished with this character for another sheet or two... Macross 7 gallery sheets - groovy MII UN Spacy People - on the brass/senior base command staff. Looks like there *may* be some new info in the text. I'll leave it to Saito to clarify. Timeline - YF-21 test flight/Guld taking out Isamu through to Maaji buying the self-aware data chip. Why couldn't we get more on the missing 30 years?! Sheryl Nome Concert history sheet - hmmm... has a play list of the two major concerts, as well as other singing appearances in the series. Tech Sheet Song Energy - begins with a kick-a$$ illo of Basara belting out red spiritia. Reverse has 3 different kinds of song energy effect by Basara (empower, sound weapon, and anti-protodevlin) with an extra report on Minmei. The second page goes into the rest of the Soundforce team, their mecha, equipment, and Jamming Birds. The reverse has sound energy used in the other series (M0, M7D, M+, MF). Intersting. song sheet - "our satori are just floating in the core, where we can spiritially go through the door, we'll know how to get eternal life, while we catch the pulse from unknown satellites" and "Quele? Quele? Bouche encorner quele, non non petit personnage, passe pase heures, comme par le passe, non non petitioin naires rien". Anyone else have a French speaker tell you how butchered the singer pronounces the lyrics? VF100's - VF-25G? Whut? Oh yeah. Macross Klan Klan - does she really need her own figure?! I can understand the Monster Girl... Reverse has "Macross Fortune (telling)". Not sure how 13 figures fits into 12 months (or 12 years, depending which one you use). Maybe Oosansouuo is supposed to go with Ranka. But how the heck does he fit into the triangle? He's a frikken mobile phone! I'm so confused. #24 - wait a second, I thought the VF-22 had two gun pods on the belly? Or is that only how Tenjin's rendered them in his picture? -

Not to mention that the captured Factory Satellite(s) was either originally meant to, or redesigned to process asteroids. The Factory Satellite certainly is akin to a deus ex machina. -

I've also noticed something odd in the Macross article in Great Mechanics.DX: one of the sub-headings is "the missing [blank] 30 years". It doesn't mention anything other than the launching of the Megaroad emigration fleets and the start of the great era of emigration in the galaxy... My question is: what the heck happened to M3 and all of the other backstory that was presented in games and series related books on those 30 years?! -
They are few and far between. Your best bet is "Macross F Official Fan Book", which is NOT among the pictures. The two Movic books on the left of the quoted picture are good for B&W character lineart and the odd piece of background and mecha art (no. No VFs).

Hmmm... that reminds me. The first time I saw the movie was in the "Clash of the Bionoids" format. The action was infinitely easier to understand than the dub! "You can still fight when yer drunk." "The man." <shudders>

Is Anime insulting your intelligence?
sketchley replied to Excillon's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Grave of the Fireflies. Grave of the Fireflies. Grave of the Fireflies. ... is not Lord of the Flies. Lord of the Flies was hellish to go through. Grave of the Fireflies was hard to watch, but hey, that's what all good war movies are. I think the best is, "Hell in the Pacific". War movies don't get much better than that. But as that came out in 1968, and is live action, I doubt most of you are aware of it or interested. Anyhow, Grave of the Fireflies is the perfect antithesis to all of the complaints about anime the author of the first post has. If the author wants more, pretty much anything by Studio Ghibli will satisfy. Wait, aren't they the ones who made Grave of the Fireflies? Anyhow, as they are all aimed at the mass market, and the majority aimed at kids-yet-having-to-satisfy-the-parents-that-accompany-them demographic, you know that you'll be in for a good treat. Grave of the Fireflies? -

Is Anime insulting your intelligence?
sketchley replied to Excillon's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Funny... the title has nothing to do with the content of the first post. Have you tried anything other than mecha anime? Like... another genre of anime? Tried Grave of the Fireflies? The other thing you have to consider is - you're getting old. Now you're moving into the phase of life where you want well written stories and logical characters. Sadly, even with live action movies, that's few and far between. I recommend the classics (by this, I mean the ones that your parent's refer to as classics). They're classic for a reason. You can also see where others have copied. Eg: Evangelion is not a rip-off of Gundam. It's a rip off of Giant Robo/Mazinger (and similar shows), combined with Nausicaa. -

There was one episode where the wing of a VF ended up in a bridge officers forehead. I think it was that episode where they met the Enterprise C from the past and Natasha Yar was brought back. -
It's understandable - if one has never seen SDF:M. Mind you, the chaos may have been exactly what the people behind Macross were aiming for - it's an anti-war series, afterall.

Aah, ok. Keep in mind that the entry plug suit line doesn't necessarily match the hip line. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto also does a slightly stylized female form. You might have better luck using a Macross image: It's from the game "Macross M3". There are probably higher resolution scans out there of it.
